For the ND ask game: 8, 9, 24, 28?
Have a zippy day! :D
I can't believe I got THREE of these asks overnight oh my goooodness. 8. Favourite second chance
Hey, how come at the end of Thornton Hall, if you click on the wrong symbol on the wall, a real fucking ghost kills you? Why does that happen. 10/10 no notes.
9. Something you find scary in an ND game that people don’t talk about
Oh, what an interesting question!!! Jeez. Well, I made a post a few months ago covering some unnerving places in the first five games that make me uneasy, but the moment that really comes to mind is during Haunted Carousel, when Nancy has to crawl underneath the entire ride to grab a remote control. Not only is that crawlspace creepy as hell, but the moment the player picks it up, the ride starts to move, threatening to skewer Nancy. The fact that this happens completely silently - COMPLETELY SILENTLY. Nancy says nothing, the Carousel makes no noise, the organ does not play. She makes no remarks about it. There's something so unnerving about it. You just have to click away quickly and then it's over.
24. Most confusing plot
So the MYSTERY of "Shadow At The Water's Edge" is "Oh fuck, is this place haunted? What's that about?" Cool, it's the same mystery as SIX previous games. Awesome and we love to see it.
The PLOT of SAW is Nancy, a visitor here at this family-owned traditional inn, repeatedly begging everyone to talk about the woman/mother/daughter who DIED there, and being SUSPICIOUS of them when they don't want to talk about it. The writing of the game, and the writing of Nancy's dialogue, means to convince the player that Nancy is Right - since ghosts are OBVIOUSLY not real and only stupid people believe in them, then the smartest suspect must be faking these hauntings to PREY on the others for some reason, and that ALONE gives Nancy the complete right to be as horrible, rude, and ghoulish as she is. I feel gross playing this game. There are many things about it that I love, though I don't think it's as great as the fandom typically regards it as, but this is the worst "Nancy Stumbled on a Mystery" game in the series.
She walks in, sees people acting "weird" about a painting falling off of the wall, and then insists that she is ENTITLED to know the details of Kasumi's Suicide, the history of the Family, and the TRADITIONS OF THE RYOKAN IN THE SHIMIZU FAMILY. The writers completely forgot to give Nancy any tact, empathy, or genuine reasoning for being allowed to stay, because 1/3rd of the way through the game she should have been fucking kicked out and shamed for her behavior.
The "confusing" part is, to me, why the player should want to continue being forced to ask horrible questions of a grieving family, snooping through their things (and a dead woman's things), and repeatedly being BEGGED over and over again to stop asking about it!! WHY IS THIS THE PLOT OF THE GAME? AAAAAAUUUUUGH I'M NORMAL.
28. Favourite place to snoop
If I can only pick one, it's Abby's Room in MHM. The music that plays in there is 10/10, the whimsigoth decor is 10/10, the information revealed to the player is 10/10, the clutter and extra prop details are 10/10. However, I'd also like to say that I love the snooping in The Final Scene, where I feel about equal attention was paid to each suspect's little area where you get to snoop around in. Very satisfying.

So the Shimizu family has a hella hard time deciding to keep their 500 year old family Ryokan running because the sisters don't know if they want to run it, but this fuck is like
"WELL YES GRAND DADDY - ILL DRESS UP IN THIS OL MASK THING AND WAIT UNTIL I NEED TO HAND OUT A PICK AXE TO A LITTLE RED HEADED LADY IN THE MOUNTAINS OF COLORADO, NO PROBLEMO! I CANT WALK OUTTA HERE ANYHOW, JUST think ABOUT HOW MY LEGS AND PELVIS COMES TOGETHER UNDER THESE OVERALLS"

Happy 109th Birthday, National Artist for Literature NVM Gonzalez (1915-1999) 🌻 Sharing a photo of NV in Odawara, Japan, with members of the Shimizu clan, owners of Koshimizu, one of the oldest Japanese inns (ryokan) in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu area.
Odawara is located in the southwest area of Kanagawa prefecture. Koshimizu has a 300-year history and has hosted many famous Japanese personalities, including the Meiji-era Japanese Emperor.
Years ago, Koshimizu's management decided to transform the inn into a daycare facility for senior citizens.
Shimizu Yoshiei, my professor at The University of Tokyo and a member of the Shimizu clan, gave me the original print of this picture before I returned to Manila from my studies in Japan (1993-1995) upon learning that NV was my teacher in UP Diliman.
The original print of this photo perished in my office during the fire that gutted the UP Faculty Center (2016). Fortunately, I digitized the image before the incident.
During its 995th meeting on 29 January 1987, the UP Board of Regents (BOR) approved conferring the Doctor of Humane Letters (honoris causa) on NV. Two years later, the BOR approved NV's appointment as UP's first International Writer-in-Residence, effective 15 July 1989, until his death on 28 November 1999.
The City of Los Angeles, in a resolution, declared 11 October 1996 "N.V.M. González Day, while The City and County of San Francisco proclaimed 7 March 1990 "Professor N.V.M. González Day in San Francisco." Among many other things, NV should be remembered for transforming cultural landscapes on both sides of the Pacific 🙏 #UPDiliman #nationalartist #nvmgonzalez

Nancy Drew Posthumous and Unseen Characters || Shadow at the Water’s Edge
Kasumi Shimizu She loved people who think for themselves, and she loved stubbornness. … Kasumi herself is very stubborn. Was very stubborn. But it made her the most beloved of the children in her school when she was young. She could never stand to see injustice done to others. It made me very proud of her, but that also has its bad side.
Savannah Woodham I’ve been a lot of places that they say is haunted… but none fit the ticket like that spooky ol’ Ryokan Hiei. I never got to finish up the chapter on the ryokan like I was supposed to. Between us girls, I’m glad of that. You getting’ much out of the family?
Logan Mitchell He’s like my own lil’ Georgia bulldog; he can be a little aggressive sometimes, a little dopey others, but always loyal. He’s one of the good ones when you get right down to it.

Right! Returning to Shadow at the Water’s Edge, I finished the master sudoku and now just need to send it off to satisfy the robotic cat’s developer.
I’ve also made contact with Savannah Woodham, an ex-paranormal investigator-turned-tech journalist, and her assistant, Logan. Some years ago, Woodham stayed at the Ryokan Hiei for a time, writing a chapter about it in her first (and only released) ghost hunting book and leaving the family a certificate that the property was ghost-free - which I found tucked behind a portrait of the absent Shimizu Kasumi along with the article no one wants me to read.
She seems to be believe there’s something dark in the ryokan, but has so far agreed that everything Nancy has experienced can be plausibly faked - and that if it’s plausible a living person could do it, a living person probably did.
I found a copy of her book in the older daughter, Yumi’s, apartment, but the chapter regarding the ryokan had been torn out. Getting an intact copy of the book is an ongoing effort.
In the meantime, I’ve been entertaining/distracting myself by doing bento box puzzles for Yumi in exchange for phone charms while my room continues to be haunted and the last of the remaining guests storm out.

birthdays.
shimizu’s family prefers quiet celebrations shared together. they don’t celebrate many large holidays due to traditional shintō values ( western holidays like halloween and christmas are more for kiyoko and her brother to experience with friends ), so birthdays are special.
generally, these celebrations don’t take place until the evening when the family can gather as a group. when she was younger, shimizu’s grandmother liked to give her small, private tea ceremonies on the morning of her birthday, but as shimizu took on more extracurriculars in junior high and high school, their routine was disrupted because she had to leave home early. if her birthday falls on a weekend, then they will likely try to maintain the tradition. in the evenings, the family gathers for a kaiseki ryori type dinner ( the type of meal served in ryokans, historically for aristocracy and developed out of tea ceremonies where there are many small side dishes of soups, pickled/vinegar dishes, fried dishes, boiled/steamed dishes, etc. ) around their low table. shimizu gets first pick, and she generally starts with the tempura.
this type of meal allows the family to bond together, making up for the moments they spend apart during the majority of the year. kaiseki ryori feels very communal, since everyone is sharing small dishes, and the tradition of eating this meal on birthdays warms shimizu’s heart— she enjoys serving her family, passing dishes across a table and seeing their smiles while they dine.
after dinner, they don’t skimp on dessert. none of their family are particularly sweet-toothed, but they generally purchase a small cake to share together. it’s usually fruit-based, and kiyoko likes the average cream and strawberry type best, so that’s typically what she’s given. her family serves her first, but she likes to take the smallest slice cut anyways.
finally, they exchange small gifts. shimizu receives practical items like winter clothes, picture frames, running gear, etc. while she opens them, her grandmother serves green tea. the family spends another hour or two taking their tea quietly and chatting. it’s nice that shimizu’s birthday coincides closely with the new year, so they talk about the future a lot together. then, she is allowed to take her shower/bath first, and she usually goes straight to bed.

The Second Uniforms - Haikyuu!! Light Novel Vol. 10
As requested by anon. Sorry it’s taking so long! It’s a cute little chapter between Kiyoko-san and Yacchan. Translation under the cut.
The first day of Spring High, the night after Karasuno High School Volleyball Club won their highly-anticipated first match. Once they’re done with the team meeting for the match against Hyogo representative Inarizaki High School tomorrow, the members walk out to their respective rooms in the ryokan. Among them, their advisor and coach Takeda Ittetsu calls out to the manager Shimizu Kiyoko.
“I just got a message from the committee the regarding the uniform for the match against Inarizaki tomorrow....”
Shimizu turns around and calmly replies, “Is it the second uniform?”
Takeda is caught off guard by how good her guess is. “Yes, exactly,” he answers while pushing his glasses up.
“I’ll get them ready for the match,” Shimizu bows and exits the room. Walking down the corridor, she lets out a chuckle. She’s reminded of a certain happening after school the other day.
---
“Second... uniform?”, asks the first year manager Yachi in the club room one day before practice.
“Yep,” Shimizu searches inside the locker and takes out two paper bags from the cleaners. “There’s another one beside what we usually wear,” she adds while taking out a piece from the paper bag. Seems like they have been left inside the paper bags all this while, the plastic cover from the cleaners are still on. “Here, this one,” she passes it over to Yachi.
“Ah, right,” Yachi opens up the plastic cover and takes a look at the content.
“Orange... uniform? Which school’s...” Just as she says that, she notices the word ‘Karasuno’ written on the chest.
“Wait, it’s ours!?”
Shimizu laughs looking at Yachi’s popped out eyes, “Yep.”
Karasuno’s uniform is black with orange accent on the collar and side area, but this one is the complete opposite -- orange with black accent.
“I didn’t know we have this inverted version. It’s like Nishinoya-san’s uniform. Somehow having so many of them seems blinding to my eyes....”
“It’s my first time seeing this, but did we use to wear it a lot?” Yachi continues while bringing the uniform up towards the lights.
Shimizu lightly hums while jogging her memories. “Hmm, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it used in an actual match. Hmm, I wonder....”
“So it’s that uncommon,” Yachi nods. But suddenly, “Ah, but,” and Shimizu looks at her.
“Um, why do we need two different types? Even if we have two matches in one day, to purposefully get one in different colors...”
“That’s because it will be confusing if the opponent team has the same colors.”
Shimizu proceeds to explain, “Remember Aoba Jousai and Datekou? Their uniform colors are similar right?”
Aoba Jousai, the team led by the prefecture’s number one setter Oikawa Tooru, and Datekou, the team boasting the iron wall block, come to Yachi’s mind.
“Ah, right. Both of them have white uniforms with green accent.”
“Yep. That’s why when they are having a match against each other, one of them will be wearing its second uniforms. You can pay attention to it next time.”
“Yes!” Yachi neatly notes down ‘Second Uniform’ on her notebook that appears out of nowhere. Since joining the club, Yachi has been taking detailed notes daily and memorizing things like volleyball rules and the managers’ duties. Looking at her serious junior, Shimizu feels at ease knowing that she can rely on her. But right at this point, that same junior mutters as she jots down, “Seijou vs Datekou match... looked confused...” while trembling.
Shimizu smiles lightly at that, but quickly turns into a serious expression. “There’s also another important reason,” she adds quietly.
“Uh, ah, right! Wh- what would that be?”
Still holding her pen and notebook, Yachi quickly straightens up. Shimizu moves closer and continues in hushed voice.
“You know that Spring High matches are aired on TV, right?”
“Ah, yes. If I’m not mistaken, there will be TV personality too, right?”
Shimizu nods, “Yep. So at that time, if both team have similar color schemes...”
“Color schemes?”
Yachi’s mom works at a design company, so hearing about colors she reflexively leans forward. Shimizu then whispers into her ear, “... it won’t be TV-worthy.”
Hearing those unexpected words, Yachi was at a loss for words.
Uh, TV-worthy is... What is TV-worthy again? Something like Insta-worthy? Eh, but... Ehh?
Seeing the flabbergasted Yachi, Shimizu lets out a chuckle. “Just kidding, it’s just a rumor.”
“Rumor....” Yachi lets out a sigh and feels her strength has left her.
Still feeling drained, Yachi thinks that it’s true TV might do something like that. After all, the set on TV shows are always so bright, it looks like Christmas light-up everyday. The wardrobe too, always stylish and pretty.... A match between black and black, surely it would be a bit too gloomy. And if it’s too gloomy, it can’t be good for the ratings... Yep, the bright colors, like this second uniform bright, would be better for TV ratings. Yep. But, surely the opponent team would’ve thought as much. That means we have to pick the TV-worthy color first....
“That means... the color that will win against any color scheme. We need to research on the strongest color....”
Seeing the serious look on Yachi’s face, Shimizu went, “Hm?”
“Ah... no, I mean, so- sorry! I was just thinking about the TV ratings...”
“TV ratings?”
Tilting her head, Shimizu puts the uniform back into the paper bag. “Well, anyway, I couldn’t recall when was the last time we took these second uniforms to the cleaners, so what about we take them there once more before Spring High?”
“Ah, yes! Th- that’s true! ... Ah, that’s not it! I’m sorry for troubling you. I’ll do it!” Yachi comes to her senses and takes the uniforms from Shimizu’s hand.
Looking at the uniforms, Shimizu mutters, “Come to think of it, I heard that you shouldn’t leave clothes on the plastic covers.”
“Eh, is that so?”
Having stored the uniforms back, the two take the occasion to tidy up the club room a bit while having a chitchat.
“It’s something about the lack of ventilation causing the germs to grow more easily instead.”
“Eh.... I always put my clothes on the drawers with the plastic cover on. I’m such an uncivilized person!”
“No, me too. Despite knowing about it, I left the uniforms on the plastic cover.”
Hearing that, Yachi brings her hands to her head, “Again.... I didn’t think before I speak and said something rude.... I wish the ground would just open up and swallow me.”
“No, Hitoka-chan, look, don’t go hiding inside the locker please.”
Leaving the tasks at the gymnasium to Yachi, Shimizu brings the second uniforms down to Uchizawa Cleaning. She too will be retiring once Spring High ends, so she wants to give Yachi the chance to get used to the manager’s duties while she can.
Leaving the school, she walks down the slope and reaches the shopping district soon after.
Ever since the spring of her 3rd year, the look of Karasuno shopping district that she always frequents seems to have changed. Of course, it’s not that the shopping district itself that has changed, it’s her feelings about it.
Spring - Ukai Keishin who leads the Karasuno Shopping District Team took up the coach position on the volleyball club, and what used to be a plain old shopping district has turned into a shopping district filled with familiar faces of the alums. Be it the appliances store or the supermarket, they’re all the businesses of the alums who always come cheering for Karasuno in matches and bring them foods.
Nowadays when she sees someone from the alums team on the shopping district she’ll bow slightly to greet them. When she visits their shops they’ll give her some discount. The little things that weren’t there before brightens her time there now. Somehow it gives the feeling of home town.
Then there’s also the shop she’s entering now, Uchizawa Cleaning, that also belongs to one of the volleyball club alums.
“Welcome!”
The one manning the counter is the alum Uchizawa Hidenori himself. Not only does he cheer for Karasuno at matches, he also drove them all the way to Tokyo for their summer training camp. They really owe this senior of Coach Ukai a lot.
Shimizu lowers her head and passes the paper bag, “If you please.”
Taking out what’s inside, Uchizawa recognizes the second uniform straight away.
“Ah, I know this.”
“If you please,” she lowers her head once more. Uchizawa looks fondly at the orange clothes in his hand.
“You guys are actually going to Nationals, huh?”
Not knowing how to answer, Shimizu simply nods. Uchizawa adds, “Ah, I mean, see, in the prefectural matches there isn’t really any school wearing the same colors right?”
“Ah....” That’s true, Shimizu notices. They’ve never worn them this past year. Within the prefecture, there’s no need to.
“Other than practice matches, there isn’t really any chance to wear them. So you can say these uniforms are something that you can only wear if you keep winning through official matches.” Uchizawa explains while looking at the radiant uniform under the light.
Looking at his figure, something comes to Shimizu’s mind. Did Uchizawa-san and Coach Ukai have the chance to wear these uniforms in a match? There were probably a lot of chances to wear them when we were called a powerhouse - when The Little Giant was there... Come Spring High in January, will our own team have the chance to wear them...
While thinking about the Tokyo Gymnasium that she has yet to see, she can only stare at the uniform that connects the smile of the Karasuno alum before her and the feelings of so many other people together.
“Right,” Uchizawa’s mind seems to switches back to his job. “While we’re at it, should I use delicate wash? No extra charge.”
“Ah, no, please put it on heavy duty. Inside the plastic cover the germs have...”
“Hm?”
“Ah, no, it’s nothing.”
Seeing Shimizu turning red and looking down at the floor, Uchizawa can only tilt his head in wonder.
---
Walking back to the girls’ room at the ryokan, Shimizu takes out the neatly folded second uniforms from the heap of luggage there. This time she took them out of the plastic covers as soon as she got them back from the cleaners.
Noticing the orange color in the room, Yachi comes.
“Um, could it be that tomorrow...”
“Yep, we’ll be wearing this one.”
Hearing that, her shoulders jolt. “At... at last, the time to be TV-worthy...”
“That’s right.”
The two managers look at each other and laugh.
The second uniforms - the proof that they have won through the prefectural qualifier. To Hinata and the other first years, this will be their first time wearing them. Looking forward to everyone’s reaction wearing them tomorrow, the managers continue their preparation.

AUSTIN CASTS #23- SHADOW AT THE WATERS EDGE
MOVIE CAST
-Karen Fukuhara as Miwako Shimizu
-Kimiko Glenn as Yumi Shimizu
-Masi Oka as Rentaro Aihara
-Lori Tan Chinn as Takae Nagai
-Octavia Spencer as Savannah Woodham and Tom Holland as Logan
-Kennedy McMann as Nancy Drew
What do I change/add?
There is an age gap between Miwako and Rentaro which cause conflict between the family.
Savannah and Logan make in person appearances. Logan mainly, but you do see Savannah in a phone scene.
Yumi is a lesbian.(!!!!)
Takae is still knowing, but is a bit more humorous.
Rentaro is bullied.
The “robot” of Kasumi makes a grudge girl noise.
The Ryokan Hiei is full when Nancy first arrives, but is vacant by the time she leaves.
Same culprit and same motivation.
BROADWAY MUSICAL CAST:
OKAY. SO HERE IS WHAT I WILL DO. There is, like, little to no Japanese representation in the American theatre world. I am going to go with my gut and cast asian actors that aren't necessarily Chinese/Japanese, but that I think can pull it off. I will also recast a role due to this actress’ experience in Waitress. Here it is:
-Eva Noblezada as Miwako Shimizu
-Kimiko Glenn as Yumi Shimizu
-Literally? any KPOP boy as Rentaro. Take your pick. I don’t know enough KPOP to make that call.
-Etsuko Shimazu as Takae Nagai
-Renee Elise Goldsberry as Savannah Woodham and Santino Fontana as Logan.
-Erika Henningsen as Nancy Drew

Day 25: Favorite Character Arc
This was tough! Most of the characters arcs within the games are surface level and unseen. However, they’re not without nuance. So this was difficult. Dagny Silva, Lizzie Applegate, Joseph Hughes, Hilda Swenson, Josiah Crowley, etc. have such interesting arcs and stories.
I had to go with Miwako Shimizu. Miwako’s story is something I can relate to. She shoulders all of the responsibility with none of the credit or the ability to inherit that responsibility (the ryokan). She’s constantly working on something that can never belong to her and Takae never seems to credit her until the end.
It felt really satisfying to see Miwako get some justice in the end through her break-up with Rentaro and her closer relationship with her sister Yumi.

When ND checks into the Ryokan Hiei, Simone Mueller is 1 of 5 guests staying there.
I don’t believe for ONE second that Simone Mueller would be scared out of the Ryokan, because of a ‘yurei’. A grown teenager stepped out of the WALL and Simone calmly said ‘I’m going to have call you back.’ If Simone met a real life ghost she would be calling Hollywood!! Getting paranormal experts, having op eds written in The Huffington Post, calling Brady Armstrong to play the lead in the movie adaptation of The Haunting of Ryokan Hiei. Before checking out Ms. Mueller would have the Shimizu’s signing over the rights to their story. The only fear Simone Mueller has is irrelevancy!!

Miwako Shimizu: Miwako takes the ryokan very seriously and helps out by running the front desk and virtually everything else. But as the youngest daughter, she, according to tradition, can’t inherit the inn. Is the ghost just a ploy she’s using to help subvert an ancestral custom?
Yumi Shimizu: As the first daughter, Yumi is the rightful heir to the ryokan. She’s chosen to forego this responsibility for a fast-paced city life, much to the disapproval of her family. Are the hauntings merely a scheme to close down the ryokan and prevent her from having to leave her urban lifestyle?

Still, she insists on following tradition, even if it’s against both of her granddaughter’s wishes. As an expert on Japanese culture, is she using the Yurei legend to help get her way?
