devil in the white city is soooooo good. i picked it up during my true crime phrase and was pleasantly surprised by how much it was actually about the world’s fair + how much i enjoyed that fact!

Totally! I picked it up for the HH Holmes storyline and thought I would skip over the architect stuff. However, that half of the book was far more interesting to me as it turned out. The serial killer stuff was too frustrating for how long he was able to get away with it. Wonderful narrative. I've yet to read another Larson book and I don't know why because I really enjoyed Devil in the White City.

Nancy Drew: Secret of the Old Clock

mhm suspects ranked by how much they know about the house:

louis chandler. pains me to say, but he had to have figured out el diablo's identity before targeting the house. since both diego valdez and lizzie applegate had multiple properties (diego's ranch and lizzie's second hotel, which burned down), he was likely checking out each of them and using the library to confirm where the treasure could have gone. his discovery of the "gum bo fu" title proved he was in the right place. he is, however, lazy and did not care to confirm anything about the house's backstory beyond its original owners and the likelihood that a treasure was hidden somewhere inside. he was just banking on running everyone off and tearing it apart board by board, until realizing that nancy was probably going to figure it out on her own. chortles politely over the theory that lizzie dressed as a man and styled herself with an androgynous "e. valdez" in order to earn respect in a sexist society, not just because she was an actress. poor reasoning and a lack of curiosity are his biggest weakness. thinks he can just fucking lie about a language spoken by a billion people.

charlie murphy. knows all about el diablo and his heists, but he would have his mind blown to realize he was in one of his lairs. believes el diablo is a fictitious amalgamation. believes the treasure isn't real. history-major-poisoned, doesn't believe in anything and cannot make use of his knowledge.

abby sideris. skimmed some papers and constructed an entire fake storyline around them, which only aligns with reality in rare instances and out of sheer coincidence. a complete hack whose "historical display" is going to be a travesty of misinformation even after we have handed her a great story on a silver platter. plans on incorporating a baby ghost storyline if her soundboard is to be believed.

rose green. doesn't even know how much furniture she bought, can't figure out the proper direction of wood grains, doesn't give a fuck about hidden rooms, doesn't know that abby cut a hole into the wall for a two-way mirror. cannot be assed in any way. lost her cat. in shambles.
