Interesting detail in the very first Nancy Drew book: Hannah is described as “Mrs. Gruen.” Which is interesting since she’s the Drew’s live-in maid, and has presumably been so for a long time since she’s Nancy’s mother figure. It makes me wonder what the author’s original intentions were with Hannah’s character and backstory. Maybe she was a widow and prefers keeping her former title over “Miss,” or maybe she just preferred to use Mrs over Ms, regardless. Maybe it was a grammatical fuck up. Maybe social norms regarding Ms, Mrs, and Miss weren’t as defined back then. Idk. Interesting, nonetheless, though.

Don’t forget in DDI when Hannah says he has a day off for the first time ever and he decides to try and make a bookshelf (which he doesn’t do ever, having already messed up the kitchen by trying to cook that day) and literally breaks his fingers, blacks out, wakes up in hospital, comes home to a finished bookshelf (which Hannah did while he was gone) and thinks HE FINALLY ACCOMPLISHED SOMETHING

Cinnamon Rolls and Clues--Nancy & Troy
@timeguardians
Continued from HERE
Though Troy is loath to admit it, especially given his current state, Nancy is not entirely wrong. He has always had the habit of sticking his thumb directly down on the most sensitive issue in the room, and lacks the tact to do so with any touch of sensitivity. He tends to march in like a bull in a china shop… he has been getting peoples back up over that issue for years. Nancy’s joke about boxing hardly improves his mood. “I think if I was going go take up boxing, I’d have to win once in a while. Not just get booted out the door by Mrs. Wentz’s King Kong bodyguard. ‘Course given both their bad reactions to the question; I’ll reckon they’re bonking too… sorry.” He glances up at Hannah and turns his attention back to his tea. Deciding to focus on Nancy’s words, without having to admit she has a point, he sets his cup down. “Of course, Mrs. Wentz and her bodyguard deciding to hit me in the face didn’t exactly exonerate her on the affairs.” Noticing Hannah’s sudden look, he inclines his head toward her. “Yes, I said affairs, plural.” “Oh dear,” Hannah shook her head. “Now I knew about Mrs. Wentz and her gardener… and you’re probably right about her bodyguard as well. Then there were the six-week carrying on she had with Mr. Chambers while Mr. Wentz was in Germany for work last summer. Of course, she grew up in this town and we all knew about her carrying on with a few fellows in New York City, but that was before she got married. Mrs. Wentz has always been a very pretty woman—those kinds of women tend to attract admirers, which tends to attract trouble.” Recognizing a useful source when he sees one, Troy shifts in the kitchen chair so he can see Hannah better around the steak. “The newest guy is apparently her tennis instructor at the country club… though she might be at it with the golf pro too. Heard anything about that?” Hannah frowns, wiping at a non-existent stain on her counter. “No… but my friend Sally has a daughter who works at the country club. I’m sure Vivian will be happy to tell you about it… especially if you ask her, Gavin.” Seeming to anticipate a glance from Nancy, Hannah shakes her head. “Now before you ask, Vivian will not tell you, Nancy, since you belong to the Smart Set at the country club. Vivian would never talk to you as freely as she would gossip with another employee.” Troy knows it is all a matter of class. The orders may be more clearly separated in England then they are in America, but the United States is hardly as free of classism as they claim. The groups merge more freely… but there is always going to be a touch of the Upstairs Downstairs World no matter where he goes. As Nancy sneaks her snack and starts listing off the suspects they have left, Troy sighs. “That’s right… we’ve still got the four rich guys to check out too. Not just the staff she’s carrying on with…” There is a great word for Mrs. Wentz, but he is reluctant to use it in front of Hannah. He already said the word ‘bonking’ in the prim housekeeper’s presence, and does not want to test his luck any further. Nancy seems to miss Hannah’s instructions about apologizing, but Troy decides not to push it. He might as well wait for this case to finish—then he can make Nancy apologize for all of the injuries at once. “Or stop getting in fights with bodyguards… why does Mrs. Wentz have that bodyguard anyways? She’s just rich… it’s not like her husband’s a politician or something.” “Oh, the Wentzs’ have always been paranoid.” Hannah dismisses his comment casually. “It’s the product of having too much money, and too little sense. That is likely why Mrs. Wentz convinced her husband to give her a bodyguard. Of course, it seems she has her own uses for this gentleman but that is beside the point…” Troy smirks just a bit at Hannah’s tactful observation before turning his full attention back toward Nancy and her questions. This was some actual detective work that he could wrap his mind around, “Yeah—I remember it pretty well when we first came in. It was kind of a blur on the way out.” He turns his memory to the windows. He had given them a casual glance when they first got in there, since that was the supposed entry point of the criminal party, but he could hardly go poking at them right then and there. He gives her question some serious thought, taking another sip of his tea to buy himself some time. “Yeah,” he states finally. “I think they did lock on the inside. Of course, if they got jimmied from the outside, most of the damage would probably be on that side of the house—but you’d have to go thrashing through her bushes to get a look at that.”
As Nancy expounds on her ideas, he frowns. “I can’t say I did… but Mrs. Wentz did tell you that the police gave her permission to tidy up. She’d probably want to remove any signs of it fast—criminal activity wouldn’t fit in with her couches and all that bric-á-brac she’s got all over the place. If she was up to something though, that would give her the perfect excuse to get rid of any evidence the police missed. I think the question is though, why would she want her husband out of the way? They’ve been married all these years, he clearly lets her do what she wants, and gives her a nice allowance. I figure she only stands to lose if he vanishes.” Nancy’s abrupt segway into the food makes Hannah laugh. “Long practice, my dear. I would teach you how to do it, if you ever stop running about long enough to focus on cooking.” Setting a roll next to Troy, she holds up a warning finger. “Wait until you’re done with the steak and wash your hands. I don’t want you making yourself sick on top of everything else.”

fave books please i’m bad at reading not much seems to grip me unless i’m reading the wrong stuff !!
i'm used to read so much but school really stamped that out of me so i get how you feel dw! i just finished the master and margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov which was brilliant and i didn't get bored! the names and storylines are a bit convoluted but it's very good.
some books that got me back into reading because they were so easy to read was Norwegian wood by Haruki Murakami, kitchen by banana Yoshimoto, my year of rest and relaxation by otessa moshfegh, the haunting of hill house by Shirley Jackson, perfume by Patrick Süskind . They're all fairly popular books across booktok and tumblr too so easy to start with.
I'd recommend starting with children's classics too as they are gripping, entertaining and aimed at children starting to discover reading.
Gulliver's travels, Robinson crueso, Anne of green gables!! (I loved these when i was like 13) what Katy did (i also loved these as a kid) etc. basically browse the penguin classic section of well known "children's" books.
Obvs i know adults read them and love them but they are books I remember my parents giving me when i first started to love books :) my attention span isn't great anymore and being a writer too if a book doesn't grip me in the first couple of pages I don't read it. Ik it's harsh but i am very picky lol.
When I'm going to Greece I'm going to pack books I've been meaning to read that are in my bookshelf:
The sea by John Banville
The good thief by Hannah Tinti
Boy parts by Eliza Clark (bought this bc of tiktok too lol)
Water for elephants by Sara Gruen
A lover's discourse by Xiaolu Guo
Letters to a young poet by Rainer Maria Rilke
The girl with the pearl earring by Tracy Chevalier
