I have thoughts on this week's episode of Ranma 1/2 (ep 11)!
I thought that the re-framing that the anime did of Shampoo and Akane's match was very interesting. Choosing to have Akane lob a desk at Ranma and then have him hit in the head by a football (holy head trauma, Batman!) was such an interesting change to make! Ranma being unconscious for a minute or two before running off in search of Akane gave the match more time to occur, built more suspense, and gave Ranma himself more urgency in his search.
The rest of what I have to say contains spoilers (can we say this of a manga series that finished in 1996?) for the end of the manga, under the cut
I'm a die-hard 乱あ shipper and have been since I first read Ranma 1/2, so this episode delighted my little shipper heart. There are some small but significant deviations from the manga that I wanted to expand on, and one particular change that is narratively significant in light of manga canon.
Putting aside the issues of Shampoo's newer fixation on Ranma-as-male as her future husband per Amazonian law and how that impacts the dynamics of our tsundere couple in this ep, I'm choosing to focus on the scenes related to Akane's showdown with Shampoo and the changes that the anime made from the manga (and why I'm living for them).
As mentioned, the decision to knock Ranma unconscious is an interesting change to make, but I'd argue that it works well and was a well thought-out deviation from manga canon. As I said above, it gives the match more time to occur—whether that impacts the duration of time that the Xi Fa Xiang Gao technique takes is yet to be seen. It also builds suspense for the audience, especially in light of the younger generations/newer audience members who may be interacting with Ranma 1/2 for the first time. Most importantly, though, it gives urgency to Ranma's search for Akane that isn't quite there in the manga. Sure, he's worried as he runs after Shampoo and Akane after he gets delayed (by Akane slamming a window in his face lol), but the time that elapses between the two girls going off to fight and Ranma going after them is very short. Maybe 30 seconds, 60 at the very most. I'll include a panel below to illustrate this:
And of course, I'm not arguing that Ranma isn't worried about Akane or fearful that she'll get hurt. But there's a fairly significant difference in how this is portrayed (see below) versus how the anime chose to approach this.
For one thing, the framing is very different. Akane getting injured, while of real concern, is being shown in a humourous way; her facial expressions (like the swirly eyes) and Takahashi-san's characteristic "るーみっくサイン" (rumic sign) are used for comedy, to make it seem like any hurt Akane might incur won't be too serious. Plus, while Ranma does try to diffuse the tension after Akane grabs P-chan from the tray and gets the Kiss of Death for her trouble (lol Shampoo just gives those things out like party favours, doesn't she?), and tries to avert the fight between the two girls, the time that passes doesn't truly allow his concern to sharpen further. As seen above, Ranma's worried-but-determined. He's not flooded with anxiety (or particularly intrusive thoughts imo).
However, the anime chose to allow Ranma to actually lose consciousness at the beginning of the girls' match. We don't (and probably won't) know how long Ranma was actually unconscious, but it certainly was long enough to warrant his frantic search for Akane.
And frantic it is! This man starts running around the entire campus yelling her name, escalating to screeeeaming by the end. Please see below (subs are Akane's name [あかね] and onomatopoeia/sound effects for running and heavy breathing):
But don't worry, guys, he's super laid back, super chill. Jk just in these screenshots alone, he's calling/yelling her name 10 times.
Let's talk quickly about framing here! This is pretty starkly different from how the manga frames these scenes. The colouring is dark, the sky is cloudy, there's no lightheartedness to be seen, and Ranma's frantic and anxious, underscored by the, uh, musical scoring. The anime is treating this as Serious Business, which does make a lot of sense, given that Shampoo chased onna!Ranma all over China trying to kill him, and that experience is what's informing Ranma here. He has an interspersed imagination spot (see below) of Shampoo hitting Akane point blank in the chest with one of her chuí, and we see Akane exclaim in pain, fall to the ground, and remain motionless. He's panicking because he knows how dangerous Shampoo is, and he's afraid for Akane. He doesn't want her to get hurt; he wants to protect her wellbeing, especially because he's seen that she's less concerned with that than he thinks she should be. His insult from the skating arc makes another appearance here: he calls Akane "鈍い女" [nibui onna; slow/dull girl chick], which in his imagination looks like Akane leaving herself completely open for a sternal strike? But his anxiety is informing this mental image, so he's probably imagining a worst-case scenario. I'd hope that his opinion of Akane's capability would be higher, but I digress.
After he stops running about and screams Akane's name in desperation, he quickly hears Ryouga-as-P-chan's voice, he dashes toward the sound, finding Akane unconscious on the ground: fears confirmed!
And here's where, to me, it gets really interesting. We see that Ranma is calling Akane's name and cradling her in his arms; very different to this scene in the manga, where he's on his knees next to her, calling her name and saying, "hey, [untranslatable word that could best be read as] just..." (see below):
And in the anime, this becomes what I think must be an intentional reference to the end of the Saffron arc in the last volume of the manga (38). Ranma says the same thing in one of the last scenes of that story arc, cradling an unconscious Akane in his arms, calling her name, and begging her, "起きろよ、あかね" (okiro yo, Akane; wake up, Akane], among other things. See below for comparison of the manga (upper left-hand panel, specifically) vs the anime:
And here's episode 11's parallel:
Well, gee, what does Ranma screaming her name while holding her with tears in his eyes remind me of? I'm glad you asked! It's the next panel in the manga!
Spoilers, but really.
I've reached my pic limit on this post, so I can't compare and contrast much more, but I do have more to say on this parallel. Might make another post later, so that I can show more pics for illustration.
Whether I make that follow-up post or not, my immediate thought when I saw this in the episode was both that it was an intentional reference to Jusendō, and that it was intended to be the first of a pair of narrative bookends (i.e. recurring or similar scenes meant to refer & compare to one another within the narrative to illustrate something, whether character growth, story progression, relational changes, etc). If we do get the Full Ranma Series animated (may it please God), this is both foreshadowing and bookending, and I'm delighted by it!
Also, even if we don't get to see the Jusendō arc animated, Yamaguchi Kappei will have had the opportunity to play a version of that iconic scene from the manga and do his best "Akaneeeee!" scream.

Rumic World fun facts!
It seems widely known that the short story Those Selfish Aliens is essentially the pilot for Urusei Yatsura (aka Those Obnoxious Aliens), but reading some more Rumic World & Rumic Theater short stories and comparing them to the Furinkan.com publishing timeline, a few other stories seem to be pilots for—or early versions of the ideas that would later become—other Rumiko Takahashi series.
Wedded Bliss was published in the same magazine (or a spinoff title) as Maison Ikkoku, within a month of Ikkoku's debut, though the order in which they were created is unclear since either one could've been written/drawn earlier and been held for publication at a later date. The tone of the story and the couple's dynamic is more reminiscent of Ataru & Lum than Godai & Kyoko, but the wife even has Kyoko's hairstyle and apron!
[these stories were published so long ago they read left-to-right!]
In 1985, again in the same magazine as Ranma 1/2 but this time 2 years before Ranma came out, we have Excuse Me For Being A Dog!, a romantic comedy featuring martial arts, involuntary transformations, and early prototypes of Akane, Ranma, Kuno, and even the Akane/P-chan dynamic! I have to wonder if the gag in Ranma where Ranma briefly thinks Ryoga's turned into a dog is a meta reference to this story.
Also of note: 1983's Fire Tripper and Sleep And Forget also contain ideas that wound up in Inuyasha. The former is a story of time travel between the modern age and the Warring States era, the latter is a story of reincarnation and mystical demon dogs, and both contain the Takahashi-typical dynamic of an average schoolgirl drawn into romance with a mysterious wild boy.
All the stories were originally published in English in Rumic World and Rumic Theater, but as of this writing they're all unfortunately long out of print.

Another question! It seems like there are people who get bothered by Ataru and Lum's dynamic. Like, they think that Lum deserves so much better than pining for so long after a guy that often treats her like dirt. And also there are people who don't like how she basically forced herself into his life and electrocutes him frequently. Do these bother you sometimes? To be honest, it doesn't bother me but I have seen discourse about their relationship and I have started to ask myself if maybe it should. I don't know! They aren't the epitome of a healthy relationship but do they need to be? They are funny.
This took months to respond, I apologize so much, but real life is hard!
Ok firstly, Atalum is one of the most complicated relationships in the Rumic world couples however that also seems to be the flaw in them for the fandom, because people right away just see the surface of the joke as something to take it seriously when the part that people need to take seriously is overshared by the absurdity of the parts with a joke.
One of the beauties of Urusei Yatsura is that in the absurdity and comedy of a 70s gag manga, it managed to have characters develop deep friendships and relationships even with the rules of the gag comedy in the story.
They are things that didn't age well in Urusei Yatsura's manga, after all, is a 70s manga however even with that we can get the important idea of Ataru's and Lum's character.
Ataru: Is a tsundere, love to flirt and lies all the time, to the point it a copium mechanism to not get hurt after suffering years of bad luck and reputation.
When Lum arrived, his romantic relationship with Shinobu began to disappear until it died completely. Making him bitter of Lum at first until he slowly began to fall in love with her
Lum: She is an ogre, her emotions are really intense like her electricity, she screams her feelings, and gets jealous and angry easily. However, she sometimes acts before she thinks, since her feelings guide her.
She was attracted to Ataru and her feelings developed faster into love.
Atalum: They are complex, mostly on Ataru's side because he is so used to lie verbally. After all, Lum ruined his life in the beginning, so it was hard for him to change his views of her into a romantic one right away after she ruined his romantic relationship with Shinobu. So he falling in love with her later was a thing he didn't expect at all.
With the other Rumic couples, the beginning chapters show that the main protagonist has a bad meeting but a good second one, or a bad one that becomes a good one meanwhile with Atalum, we don't see that until way later.
The thing with Atalum is that it was a toxic "relationship" that becomes a real one as time progresses, we see them communicating more and getting used to each other, we see how Ataru is ready to do anything for her, to keep her safe and happy. We see how a love that wasn't the in both parts begins to form from a marriage that one of the parties didn't want.
That's it until the final arc that they get in the most absurd way possible to communicate and seeing how much young they are by their immaturity but we also can notice that they really love each other with their limitations of youth. The last arc is just the beginning of their officially formalizing their relationship, a thing that they will learn more about love in their own absurd way. Since after the final arc, there is no doubt to Lum or to anyone that Ataru loves her.
They still need to grow a lot more, but hey for a relationship that began in such a way in a manga of the 70s just shows how good Rumiko will become with writing other couples in the future.
A couple that didn't seem to work in the beginning, became one of the strongest in the finale of the series because of how intense and true were their love for each other.

Do you have any Ranma 1/2 ships, I just wanna hear and won't judge? ;)
Hai there, hope you're doing great!!
Let's just say, THE Ranma 1/2 ship to me is Rankane. It's the typical Rumic couple situation: both are idiots and hilariously dysfunctional; but they truly love, care and will support each other no matter what, even if it seems like there's no one else by their side. Ships like that fulfill both my love for comedy and romance at the same time and to me, RT writes them with a perfect balance of both, and Rankane is no exception.
I really love how Ranma and Akane start out and how they grow throughout the series. They hated each other at first (for justified reasons) but as they get to know more about how the other, they slowly start to care and eventually fall for the other. They're just silly little idiots X3
As for any other ships, I'm fine with most of the other popular ships (not involving Ranma and the rest of his suitors, cuz to me Akane's the only one for him), I think Ryokari (Ryoga and Akari, is that even their ship name?? Idk) is probably one I love more than the other ships, though not as much as Rankane, they're just super cute and I couldn't help but root for them while reading the manga, lol.
#i also know ryoga and ukyo are quite popular but ive only read the manga and their dynamic seems fun#i think they have more spotlight in the anime and im a multishipper so i think theyre cool#ukyo and shampoo would be great yuri too#theres more but now ill go to the other canon ones..#shampoo and mousse are the ship i feel like needs more work but then again they are cute too#ukyo and konatsu are cool too but its like a ryunagi situation where it could use a lot of work lol#ok thats it!#thanks for the ask!#yucarambles#ranma 1/2#ranma saotome#akane tendo#rankane#ryoga hibiki#akari unryu#ryokari#god i love them sm

The drama into the twitter rumic fandom since Ranma 1/2 remake announcement is unreal. Just a bunch of Inuyasha fans being, you know, Inuyasha fans? like "Oh when it's our turn?" and people around getting mad at them because apparently Inuyasha is "Takahashi's spoiled child" with its own ending plus a sequel (how dare you even mention it lol). Really can't understand why is this happening, every Inuyasha fan I've seen is more than happy for the recent Ranma news.
By the way, I always hear from a lot of people that Inuyasha is Takahashi's most popular work in the West, but is it really so? I've lived without having it on my radar for uh what almost 27 years, yet Urusei Yatsura for example as much as I've never caught it on TV is an anime I'd heard of, and I've watched at least a couple of episodes of Ranma 1/2 as a kid. As for Inuyasha... my very first contact with it was a review on Instagram accompanied by a picture of Inuyasha and Kagome and I... ahahah... Oh my God I looked at that and thought: "What is doing here Rei from Sailor Moon with this boy looking just like one of those monks who withdraw from the world in meditation?"

Response to inukaggerz from TikTok
Admin: Since my posts were tagged several times on this persons page, I went to sift through on some of their posts most noted was the misinformation that I was being told about this creator. Misinformation from what I was shown was the InuYasha Age thing. I've already debunked that and the comments on their own page telling them that they're wrong spoke for themselves. You can see my whole thread on InuYasha's Aging here: https://www.tumblr.com/officialinuyasha/188297815705/inuyashasaging I was shown this discussion thread:
Here's my post about Rumiko Takahashi's Involvement in Yashahime: https://www.tumblr.com/officialinuyasha/645655709524082688/rumikosinvolvementinyashahime Also to educate on the "canon" concept, since we see a lot of black and white thinking here: https://www.tumblr.com/officialinuyasha/728142348971917312/canon-cultural-differences From there I commented the responses in following since my page was also being used: The interview about Hogosha was reference about the Final Act the full context of that interview was that Sesshoumaru had shown restraint in visiting Rin also - Rumiko says "But when you visit so frequently you know... however there some level of moderation." That's how often Sesshoumaru went to visit Rin. After that interview she went to draw Sesshoumaru and Rin for the Official Yashahime Manga. That means she approved of the pairing.
Before that in Rumiko Takahashi's 35th anniversary book.. https://www.tumblr.com/officialinuyasha/626616292793810944/rumic-world-35th-anniversary-translation-a-dog
"A dog demon who has a moon sign on her forehead like Sesshomaru. She sent Sesshomaru into Meido. She revived Rin, who wasn't supposed to be resurrected, for Sesshomaru. However, she couldn't hide her bitter feelings about her son being attracted to a human girl."
Hogosha has been used for couples before such as the Slayers series for Gourry and Lina where Gourry directly calls himself her Hogosha:
It was also used in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:
https://www.tumblr.com/officialinuyasha/646760111831990273/we-were-asked-about-this In addition to this Rumiko Takahashi has done many couples similar to this pairing, whether fans approved of it or not - Rumiko's Fire Tripper with all the time traveling adoptive sister/brother relationship swapping:
In Maison Ikkoku:
The main character Kyoko’s first husband who was her teacher, Soichiro Otonashi. She was in love with him so much. She decided to keep his last name, even after his death.
This is also Rinne's Parents, which is another Rumiko Takahashi series:
This comment comes from nastywomanfan:
For context (SPOILERS):
"The girl on the left is Rinne’s mother who was a Shinigami before reincarnating as a little girl due to some shenanigans. The guy on right is Rinne’s father and her ex-husband. Eventually she remembered her past life and they learnt who she was. These two seem to have stayed friends in the end but also often reminiscent about their romantic days together and it seems he still tries to impress her and she still isn’t (which seems to be the same dynamic they had before she got reincarnated, since she loved him but knew he was a pretty lousy man, lol)
What’s even more interesting is that the reason she ended up reincarnated is due to her chasing a book with proof of her age, cuz she wanted to hide from Sabato (her husband)... that she was only a few years younger than his own mother, l o l. He doesn’t care when he learns, lol
So you got a woman marrying a guy who’s so young he could be her son (they’re shinigamis tho, so like with Sesshomaru etc, it’s all cool they age slowly as heck) and then ending up reincarnating as a little girl and they still have some moments together, which can be interpreted as “gotta get together again in future” or “just some friendly exes”
She also acts motherly towards the protagonist, giving him money etc cuz like... she is his mother, technically, just in previous life
None of it seems to be portrayed as creepy or bad, simply comedic shenanigans and sorta romantic but in “gosh what dumbasses”
And ya can’t blame Sunrise for any of this, antis, cuz it’s based on Rumiko’s manga" How about Seven Deadly Sins Elizabeth and Meliodas -
In Bastard!
Dark Schneider Adopted Arshes Nei as his daughter when she was a child, he even named her - and then they got into an intimate relationship - Dark Schneider is over 400 years old. Dark Schneider reincarnated as Lucien, who was adopted by Geo - that's Yoko's father. Lucien is in love with his adoptive sister Yoko. Even in his D.S. form he kisses Yoko. As you can see one word does not change the fact that these are all official couples whether people like it or not.

Rumic World Week (Day 4)
Celebrating @rumicworldweek, just answering questions. For my favorite dynamic, I'm gonna go with Sango and Miroku! Yes, we got another tsundere-y sexpest-y couple, but they're adorable together. Miroku helps Sango through so much trauma and they are both badass together.
I'm just gonna post a few random pages of them.

So... not safe for work-ish question but...
How do you think each of the Rumic world couples' sex lives are?
The overarching consensus is that Inuyasha and Kagome can't keep their hands off one another once they've tied the knot, but what about Ranma and Akane? Ataru and Lum? And the side pairings?
Which ones are more shy? What are their dynamics in bed? Would they talk to one another about it or do they not 'kiss and tell.'
Anyone want to sound off on this?

hello! i have some questions for you if you have the interest of answering :) first of all i want to thank you so much for translating hny. i dont live in the us so i dont have any access to buy the manga and the only way for me to read it is through the internet and youre the only one that has translated 20 chapters so far! would you know how many chapters are there in total in the manga? do you speak japanese? where do you get the raws from? sorry for all the questions lol and ty ♥
outoftomorrow: Sure I'll answer what I can~ You're welcome for the translations. I do what I can. As long as VIZ isn't even more of a douchebag then it's been already. Heh. Anyway, HNY is ongoing--and at present, there are 21 chapters as of either today-or tomorrow. So, there's no end total for chapter count at the moment, since the manga is not done. I am not totally fluent in Japanese--but I know enough to be able to translate a bunch of the bubbles in manga. For what I still don't know off the top of my head--I use a Kanji to English dictionary that I own. The raws come from helpful people on tumblr that can get access to them and send me the links to their drop boxes, such as @anime-fanatic-girl, and @meidozangetsuha, @senpujin, @rumic-world, and a couple others here and there. Speaking of~ IF ANYONE HAS CHAPTER 21 RAWS POP THEM OVER, THANK YOU! =) I hope that answers your questions thus far. lol.
