Cannibalism news: LAS VEGAS MAN ACCUSED OF EATING VICTIM’S EYEBALL AND EAR
A 31-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of killing a man and eating parts of the victim’s face last weekend at East Charleston Boulevard and 3rd Street Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department released this report: Police advised that the alleged perp, Colin Czech, had “biological matter in his hair, mouth, and on his clothing.” “Biological matter” is a euphemism for blood,…

Shaolin Dolemite (1999)
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
If Shaolin Dolemite had any decency, it would’ve jumped into a volcano and incinerated itself before the editing was done. You can’t make a movie that’s “so bad it’s good” on purpose and if you’re going to try, don’t make it last nearly two hours. For fans of martial arts films, it has nothing to offer. The plot is incomprehensible. It has no stakes, no characters, and a structure so wobbly the slightest breeze would topple it. Even for the most generous admirers of Rudy Ray Moore, this is painful.
When Tupac (Eugene Thomas), steals the Wu-Tang clan’s Dolby Digital death bell and joins forces with a group of evil ninjas, his mentor, Dolemite (Rudy Ray Moore) disowns him. As the villains attack a Shaolin temple, a new student of its master, Japanese Prince Sanada (Alexander Lou), two members of the Shabazz clan (Toby Russell and John Ladalski), Davey Crockett (Silvio Azolini) and a Shaolin princess (played by Mandy Pang - I think; more on that in a moment) team up to stop them.
Someone could put a gun to my head and I still wouldn’t be able to tell you the name of any of this film's characters except for the “joke” ones. Firstly, because it’s a struggle to stay awake during this film. It’s little more than a lame redub of the 1986 Taiwanese kung fu film Ren zhe da (known in English as Ninja: The Final Duel) with about 15 minutes of new footage spliced in (this is where you get your Rudy Ray Moore). All of the characters receive ridiculous names, lame racial jokes are inserted throughout and when writers Robert Tai (who also “directs”), George Tan, Jimmy Lynch, and Rudy Ray Moore couldn’t think of anything, they just inserted a bunch of obscenities to pad out the dialogue. It’s impossible to remember who’s who thanks to the utter lack of characterization.
There's more. After Tupac steals the bell, the movie is non-stop fighting. That might sound good, but here’s the thing: you never know who is on who’s side, what the stakes are, who’s winning or losing, or what anyone is fighting for or about. It’s just people in silly costumes jumping around, mock-punching and kicking. The stunts might be better than you’re used to if you’ve been following Moore’s filmography, but not by much. Your eyes quickly glaze over the mind-numbing display of athletics from people at a dojo who had nothing better to do with their weekend than shoot this movie. Then, we get to the second reason you won’t be able to remember anyone’s name: the ending. It’s so abrupt you’ll wonder if you dozed off and then halfway through, the names stop scrolling and the movie cuts to black. Who played who? Doesn't matter.
I can’t say for sure, but I’m about 99% certain Ninja: The Final Duel is awful. The special effects are never convincing. The picture quality, cinematography and performances are trash. You can tell the performers are no good even though you can’t hear their dialogue and what they were originally saying has been covered up by Shaolin Dolemite. Essentially, this is like watching a bad movie on mute while a bunch of unfunny people subject you to their comedy act. While a broken clock is right twice a day, you could be having just as much fun tracking down the original Ninja: The Final Duel and doing the same thing because it would be 15 minutes shorter.
Anyone who speaks enthusiastically about this rusty bowl of dog butter covered in bad ebonics will talk about the topless female ninja. BiG dEaL. The shots of uncovered nipples last about 15 seconds. It’s hardly anything to get excited about and in a movie featuring Rudy Ray Moore? that’s an insult. Wait. That's the perfect word to describe this movie! I hated Shaolin Dolemite. (July 30, 2021)

I think there needs to be a reckoning about how so many white (passing) American secular/nonpracticing antiZionist Jews can say "Not in my name, Israel doesn't speak for us!" and then think they can speak for Israel. How so many of them can have a limited familial connection to Israel, have such a disdain for Israelis, Israeli culture and society, and Israel as a concept, and then have the gall to act like their opinions matter?
I see their attitudes be described as fear, but to me it strikes me as more than just fear. A lot of them, I suspect, have incorporated antiZionism as a fundamental part of their Jewish identity. It's not just a disagreement, they're not just saving face. Take away the Goyim and talk to them privately and they still believe what they believe, and express it in the same way. They hate Israeli Jews.
And Israel is only going to become less Ashkenazi (aka less "white") as time marches forward. The bad faith hysterical Israel bashing and condescension is only going to look more and more like Orientalism, and frankly, racism.
I think it's very possible that calling something antisemitic can't just be a catchall term when this chicken comes home to roost. I think if there aren't already, there will be distinct forms of antisemitism, some that only Diaspora Jews face and some that only Israeli Jews face. And if this is true or will end up being true, it's pretty important that we not speak over each other's experiences. To do that we have to recognize these experiences and respect them. Do some Israeli Jews disrespect the Diaspora experience? Yes, from what I've seen. Is it nearly as vitriolic and is it growing nearly as quickly as the disrespect for the Israeli experience among antiZionist American Jews? Not even close.
All this divisive language to say: sometimes when Israelis say "so and so is antisemitic!" in the context of antiZionism, they're talking about themselves, their experiences, the stakes for them, and not Americans. So maybe we should all learn to stay in our lanes sometimes.
A lot of Israeli Jews disrespect, or at least are unable to grasp, diaspora existence, particularly when it comes to Americans. I can't even count the number of times I read Israelis say "Why are you American Jews so upset about Trump? Don't you see how good he's been for Israel?" Which is the worst damn argument a person could possibly use - it feeds into both left-wing and right-wing antisemitism, while ignoring that American Jews live HERE and are at risk from Trump's fascist cult and general lawlessness. And it is bad FOR EVERYBODY to have "pro-Israel" become the position of stroke-babbling grotesque racist criminals, and also for America to be too focused on anarchic decomposition and Yugoslav-style street warfare to be able to support Israel like it traditionally has.
And because turds of a feather flush together, Netanyahu wants ALAN DERSHOWITZ to be Israel's advocate if the ICJ case proceeds. I knew Netanyahu was a senile failure undermining all the strengths he had ever built for the country and this is just the shit cherry on top of the shit sundae. Alan Dershowitz is the ultimate stereotype of a Boomer who was kind of useful in the 1980s-90s and became awful and embarrassing now, Trump is surrounded by them (i.e. Rudy Giuliani). Your grandma in Florida remembers Alan Dershowitz for writing "Chutzpah" and being tough and quick-witted, and everybody under 40 knows Dershowitz as a Trump cultist and Epstein fuckbuddy. Big "Vladek Spiegelman can only compare his artist son to Walt Disney" energy. There are surely thousands of lawyers better-suited for the role, just off the top of my head I'd prefer Eugene Kontorovich and so should anyone who is more aware of the world as it actually is than how it was in 1994.
I say all that to parallel your original point, not to contradict it. Yes, the American Jews who performatively loathe Israel are by and large just an Extremely Online phenomenon of the most college-town bubble-protected, least observant, least affiliated, and least aware of non-Ashkenazim. It is not so hard for American Ashkenazim to stay protected from antisemitism as long as they totally unplug from their Jewish identity and any public-facing aspects of it. Can't be killed in a synagogue or JCC or kosher store if you never go in, head tap.

OMITB S4:E8 "Lifeboat"
This episode was really interesting. More questions answered and even more created now that we know what went on with the Westies. Given all the theories out there the ending wasn't too surprising but I do wonder how all of this will be explained in the final episode. At this point I don't have many theories left I'm just waiting on the denouement. All in all I enjoyed it. Spoilers ahead!
I can't believe Dudenoff's death was that simple. I'm not even going to lie I just found the whole thing so sad. He was lonely and grieving his wife and then created a found family that he loved so much he wanted to protect them even in death. Poor Helga who was so scared and convinced that someone did something to him. What I don't understand though is why they called her the wrong kind of Westie and scratched her face out in the picture. They acted like she was a villain or something when all she was trying to do was figure out what happened to Dudenoff. There was a theory on the subreddit that Helga was the one giving Sazz information and now it's confirmed so this is a new turn of events. I'm with Mabel on not ratting them out but with Dudenoff confirmed to be dead how are they going to continue this rent scheme? The police know so the jig is up. Or is this reveal just so that the trio would sympathize with them and not rat them out to the police?
Glen being the stuntman that Sazz was referring to still feels like a red herring to me. We know that he is mentally unwell because of the hallucinated rats but I still don't think he's our killer. I'm thinking Glen is part of the group that killed Sazz and the mastermind shot him to keep him from confessing or it's as simple as the common theory that Marshall is the killer and shot him because he recognized him outside of his disguise. With Glen being in a coma we probably won't learn either outcome until the season finale or the very end of the next episode. Sazz said that this stuntman messed up badly and would be the death of her. She's dead and he's in a coma so she was right but the fact that he was shot means that some sort of cover up is in place for whatever it is that he did and whoever else knows it.
The Westies showing up and waving a knife and everyone just going along with it is so wild to me. It was 6 against 5 and I know Rudy is fit but surely they could have still held their own. It makes sense they didn't react though because they needed the confession. Rudy doing the entire monologue and everyone progressively getting emotionally drained was so funny. Zach has had the funniest quotes this season and I hope someone does a video edit including them all.
Charles really needs therapy when the case is solved because the way he's unraveling and doesn't even know how to process his anger is so sad to watch. Eugene better be careful what he wishes for because when Charles fully snaps and lets all his anger out it's not going to be pretty. I wouldn't be surprised if upon learning who killed Sazz he attacks them (not fatally) and has a full breakdown.
Every week I see the same theory that Loretta will die and I'm starting to get scared this may actually happen. I get them being sentimental about The Arconia but it's full of so much death I can't believe that they would plan their wedding there. Oliver has lost so much and Charles just lost his best friend so do you think the writers will really go there? Maybe it will be a bridesmaid or someone else in the bridal or groom party who is killed. I just feel like instead of killing her off they can just write out her character by saying that she and Oliver travel back and forth to see each other and that explains why she's not onscreen. They've been making it work now so no need to take such a dark route.
I'm so excited for the last two episodes and to see how this all plays out. The Westies never confirmed that it was them sending the letters or bugging the apartments so the mastermind is still out there waiting. This also means that there must be another murder that has gone unnoticed. On a recent youtube video, Matt & Jess TV mentioned Charles' quote in the pilot about the bodies buried in the back of a 14 story building as well as Marv mentioning the Sixth Street Slasher so it looks like there's still a cold case to solve.
And to wrap this all up I just have one question: WHERE IS THEO?

Kashmir Hill’s “Your Face Belongs to Us”
This Friday (September 22), I'm (virtually) presenting at the DIG Festival in Modena, Italy. That night, I'll be in person at LA's Book Soup for the launch of Justin C Key's "The World Wasn’t Ready for You." On September 27, I'll be at Chevalier's Books in Los Angeles with Brian Merchant for a joint launch for my new book The Internet Con and his new book, Blood in the Machine.
Your Face Belongs To Us is Kashmir Hill's new tell-all history of Clearview AI, the creepy facial recognition company whose origins are mired in far-right politics, off-the-books police misconduct, sales to authoritarian states and sleazy one-percenter one-upmanship:
https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/691288/your-face-belongs-to-us-by-kashmir-hill/
Hill is a fitting chronicler here. Clearview first rose to prominence – or, rather, notoriety – with the publication of her 2020 expose on the company, which had scraped more than a billion facial images from the web, and then started secretly marketing a search engine for faces to cops, spooks, private security firms, and, eventually, repressive governments:
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/18/technology/clearview-privacy-facial-recognition.html
Hill's original blockbuster expose was followed by an in-depth magazine feature and then a string more articles, which revealed the company's origins in white nationalist movements, and the mercurial jourey of its founder, Hoan Ton-That:
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/03/18/magazine/facial-recognition-clearview-ai.html
The story of Clearview's technology is an interesting one, a story about the machine learning gold-rush where modestly talented technologists who could lay hands on sufficient data could throw it together with off-the-shelf algorithms and do things that had previously been considered impossible. While Clearview has plenty of competitors today, as recently as a couple of years ago, it played like a magic trick.
That's where the more interesting story of Clearview's founding comes in. Hill is a meticulous researcher and had the benefit of a disaffected – and excommunicated – Clearview co-founder, who provided her with masses of internal communications. She also benefited from the court documents from the flurry of lawsuits that Clearview prompted.
What emerges from these primary sources – including multiple interviews with Ton-That – is a story about a move-fast-and-break-things company at the tail end of the forgiveness-not-permission era of technological development. Clearview's founders are violating laws and norms, they're short on cash, and they're racing across the river on the backs of alligators, hoping to reach the riches on the opposite bank without losing a leg.
A decade ago, they might have played as heroes. Today, they're just grifters – bullshitters faking it until they make it, lying to Hill (and getting caught out), and the rest of us. The founders themselves are erratic weirdos, and not the fun kind of weirdos, either. Ton-That – who emigrated to Silicon Valley from Australia as a teenager, seeking a techie's fortune – comes across as a bro-addled dimbulb who threw his lot in with white nationalists, MAGA Republicans, Rudy Guiliani bagmen, Peter Theil, and assorted other tech-adjascent goblins.
Meanwhile, biometrics generally – and facial recognition specifically – is a discipline with a long and sordid history, inextricably entwined with phrenology and eugenics, as Hill describes in a series of interstitial chapters that recount historical attempts to indentify the facial features that correspond with criminality and low intelligence.
These interstitials are woven into a-ha moments from Clearview's history, in which various investors, employees, hangers-on, competitors and customers speculate about how a facial-recognition system could eventually not just recognize criminals, but predict criminality. It's a potent reminder of the AI industry's many overlaps with "race-science" and other quack beliefs.
Hill also describes how Clearview and its competitors' recklessness and arrogance created the openings for shrewd civil libertarians to secure bipartisan support for biometric privacy laws, most notably Illinois' best-of-breed Biometric Information Privacy Act:
https://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/ilcs3.asp?ActID=3004&ChapterID=57
But by the end of the book, Hill makes the case that Ton-That and his competitors have gotten away with it. Facial recognition is now so easy to build that – she says – we're unlikely to abolish it, despite all the many horrifying ways that FR could fuck up our societies. It's a sobering conclusion, and while Hill holds out some hope for curbing the official use of FR, she seems resigned to a future in which – for example – creepy guys covertly snap photos of women on the street, use those pictures to figure out their names and addresses, and then stalk and harass them.
If she's right, this is Ton-That's true legacy, and the legacy of the funders who handed him millions to spend building this. Perhaps someone else would have stepped into that sweaty, reckless-grifter-shaped hole if Ton-That hadn't been there to fill it, but in our timeline, we can say that Ton-That was the bumbler who helped destroy something precious.

Watching Season 4 of Only Murders In The Building. (E8)
Rewatch of ONLY Murders In The Building to prepare for season 4:
<Part I> // <Part II> // <Part III> // <Part IIII> // <Part V> // <Part VI> // <Part VII> // <Part VIII>
<S4 E1> // <S4 E2> // <S4 E3> // S4 E4 // <S4 E5> // <S4 E6> // <S4 E7>
This is no rewatch but my new posts can also easily be blocked because I'll continue to use #OMITBRewatch as a tag. I'll also tag #OMITBS4. While quoting, I use M, O, C for the main characters.
Beware spoilers! (even though it's saturday... I am sick but finally find the time to watch the episode)
S4 E8
Okay, let's go!
I don't think I watched even one Hitchcock movie.
We know how Vince and Richard know Dudenoff but we are still missing the connection to Alfonso, Inez and Ana?
Ah, Helga! Hammy Faye belonged to her?
M: "How do neither of you know how to pop the hood of a car?" O: "Because real men hire other men, Mabel." C: "Triple-A says they're 15 minutes away, and it's good to leave them something to do 's cause it makes 'em happy." Tbf, I have to search for the lever in my car every time I have to pop the hood... but at least I have an idea where it is.
Always the iphone ring tone.
Aw cute Charles and Vance were wordle buddies.
lmao the stars and the originals meet at the set of Charle's apartment instead of Charle's apartment.
Loretta and Oliver are getting married this weekend? That is fast... okay they are old but it's also very fast.
Love how Mabels stare put Zach in his place.
The "Lady Longoria 19-in-1 Multitool." is going to be Checkov's gun, is it not?
Omg. No, Eugene! Don't try to get Charles angry!
Ah! Dudenoff and his wive went to the restaurant owned by Alfonso and Inez.
Alfonso: "Tony Dancer would be an investor."
Love that Rudy is doing the whole monologue when most only do one or two lines.
Dudenoff, being philosophical: "Let me ask you somethin'. If your life were a movie, what would be your happy ending?" Eva, saying what I also thought a moment earlier before I rememberd that Dudenoff is probably not that kind of guy: "And that's when he touched your Santa sack, and you had your 'happy ending.'"
Vince what you describe is depression.
Love that Dudenoff is calling Vince 'kid'.
So, the westies did not do it?
Helga!
C: "You're Helga? I imagined you toothless with a club." WHY CHALRLES?! O: "Disregard him, Helga. His brain is covered with plaque. Please go on." I don't think that is the explaination but okay.
I like Helga. A girl with the dream of bekoming a locksmith since her childhood is something special.
Aw :( why the unneeded sarcasm Helga..? that makes her less sympathetic. But she is a locksmith.
Again the "Perfect Strangers" song.
What I'm confused about is that Helga has such a strong accent when we can assume that she grew up in America. What was she? Dutch? Norwegian? Swedish? I forgot... either way they all learn english very early on too.
lmao Charles folding stuff in the background.
What now?
Where are they?
Did Dudenoff kill himself?
Wow that is harsh... Dudenoff just made everyone accomplices...
I'm not sure the camera would be good enough for that lighting.
okay but who killed Sazz?
Okay... Zach can connect (kiss) Oliver because they are both romantics...
Found families really is a topic in the whole show...
WHO KILLED SAZZ?!?!
What about Howard..?
Suddenly a completely new character?? Or it's Glen.
WAS I RIGHT AND IT'S ABOUT THE STUNTPEOPLE?!
Helga: "She talked about a stuntman on a movie called Project Ronkonkoma."
It's Glen!
Heck. What a twist.
But even if it was Glen who killed Sazz because of something, he would have no reason to stop the OG 3 from making the podcast so there is still a bigger storyline in the background?
