I hate when people say that disliking Saccharina is misogynistic. Because newsflash. Feminism is about equality, which includes acknowledging that women can be shitty too.

Also. The fact that she's an incredibly powerful character with a tragic backstory isn't even what bothers me about her. It's how she treats Ruby.

It's the insensitivity to Ruby and Amethar's grief. For fuck' sake, Ruby hadn't even said anything yet after delivering the killing blow to the Sugarplum Fairy and Saccharina immediately assumed Ruby would take full credit and be thankless. And then Saccharina also kept complaining about Ruby not warming up to her, when she never actually reached out to this grieving person to have some kind of decent heart to heart. Then there's considering having Ruby murdered after Ruby finally felt a little bit more ready to accept her, after finally getting closure with Jet.

Just cuz she's never experienced the same loss, doesn't mean she gets a pass to be so insensitive to others. That doesn't mean their tragedies should be some kind of pissing contest. Cuz that's what she was doing, every time Ruby and Amethar express grief and distrust after the shit they went through, Saccharina's so quick to go "well I never grew up with you all and my past is so so tragic." It's so invalidating. Like when people in real life tell you you can't be upset cuz you don't have it the worst. And that's So shitty and infuriating.

Would you ever write a modern day Dreamling fic that's centred around them playing with smutty historical language? The more ridiculous the better? And because they are who they are, they flip back and forth between thinking it's ridiculous and being sincerely turned on about it all?

YES. Oh god, yes. In my head, Hob hoards the most recent slang because that has served as a survival mechanism in the past — it ensures that no one starts to question why he uses odd, archaic vernacular, thus raising suspicion.

But that means that 90 % of Hob’s vocabulary has been labelled off-limits. And Hob prides himself on being an excellent dirtytalker in every century, goddamn it! Why shouldn’t he get to show off, a bit?

Dream gladly enables him in this, things escalate, and suddenly they are recreating/retconning the 1889 meeting.

Because by the late 19th century, Hob had mastered it all — prigging, tupping, tipping the velvet, joining giblets, pearly showers, flogging — whether we’re dealing with Arbor vitaes and bawbles, cunnies, ruby-tipped globes or blind cupids, whether fetching mettle by himself, or going off to bedfordshire with a Wagtail or a Gal-Boy, Hob is your man. He owns more spanking chairs than kitchen chairs. I could and will go on.

And then we get into some Victorian terms of endearment — Boop, Bunbury, Lovey, Sweetling, Sugarplum, Treacle, just to mention a few. My own favourite is still Keats’s ”darkling”. Funnily enough, the fandom favourite ”duck” was mainly used as a term of endearment for children, particularly one’s own child (see also ”duckling”). 

[Sidenote — a man who frequents brothels was known as a ”Corinthian”…  (”Corinth” = a brothel)…]

I think Dream would harrumph and grumble about the indignity of such diminutives, but secretly adore it. Morpheus is noted in Season of Mists as "accumulating names to himself as others make friends, but he permits himself few friends." He is given more names in The Sandman than any of the other Endless, far beyond the many translations of Dream. So I chose to interpret that as canonical confirmation that Dream has a praise kink / loves cute nicknames? 😂

This month's issue of Dance magazine has a brief interview with Christina Clark, a member of NYCB's corps de ballet.

When Christina Clark saw her first Nutcracker performance at age 5, she didn’t immediately aspire to the roles of Sugarplum Fairy or Dewdrop—instead, she was fixated on the dozens of children in the cast. “I was determined to become one of those kids onstage,” she remembers. “Performing was the only goal.” Clark, a New York City native, was accepted into the School of American Ballet at age 7, became an apprentice with New York City Ballet in 2016, and was promoted to the corps de ballet in 2017.

With her elongated limbs and polished port de bras, Clark is a remarkably self-possessed dancer who uses her 5′ 10 1/2″ frame to fully inhabit every choreographic moment and musical note. She debuted in a slew of roles in 2023, including the Tall Girl in George Balanchine’s “Rubies” and the lead woman in Haieff Divertimento, which hadn’t been performed by NYCB since 1994. As more opportunities continue to come her way, Clark is determined to squeeze as much as possible out of each experience: “My overarching goal is always to continue growing��in my technique, my artistry, and my approach to new roles.”

Embracing the Unfamiliar “I love exploring different movement styles, even if they’re not my forte. When I was rehearsing Justin Peck’s sneaker ballet The Times Are Racing, I had to tackle questions like ‘How does my weight need to be distributed differently in a sneaker versus a pointe shoe?’ or ‘How can I syncopate the steps and accent certain moments that reveal different aspects of the music?’”

Using Imagination as a Tool “As an English major at Columbia University, I love storytelling. When preparing for a role, I imagine a character or story to inform my movement. Even for something plotless like Haieff Divertimento or ‘Rubies,’ there’s a certain flavor to each part. It’s helpful to think about steps in terms of analogies and images, ranging from moving my hands through water to embodying a strand of seaweed in the ocean.”

A Recurring Pinch-Me Moment “Dancing Balanchine’s Serenade always feels like a career-reaffirming experience. I’ve performed it for many seasons, and every time, it hits me that I’m living in the tableau I dreamed of for so long. It’s such a community-based ballet, and one of my favorite things about this career is connecting with the dancers around me—they’re my best friends and greatest sources of inspiration. To dance as part of a group, especially in a ballet containing so much meaning and joy, will always be a highlight.”

"Roger dearie, the contest is due soon..." I said, leaning over the windowpane. As Roger struck a cigar, his eyes were tired and wanted.

"You know, I haven't seen much talent in ages, darling.... not ever since the incident...." Roger protested, his amber eyes darting into my purple eyes.

I looked at him pitifully, I bet I would be rich every amount of lies Roger made, but sadly, this one was pure truth.....

I turned on the television, my wine glasses falling to my feet, a group of 5 boys singing their hearts out to a rap song....

I felt electrified with each breathy wanton gasp, each heart-pulsing high note, and every long, velvety high note.

My wine poured all over my white, pearl necklace down to my ruby red heels.

Roger turned around to me, "You ok, sugarplum?" He asked, seeing the pure shock on my face.

"W-who are they?" I asked immediately as their lead singer hit a huge high note. It was too beautiful for words....

"Darling, you're in that inspired mood again.... aren't you?" He asked, a little nonchalant to the situation.

"We could sign for them.... and hopefully, just maybe we can get them in the contest....?" I asked, in a pleading way, my red hair covering my soft smile.

"Only, if you agree to play a little patty-cake with me~?" He asked, softly teasing as I nodded, my heels clicking as I walked to the phone.

I knelt at the phone, seeing Roger named the many who wanted a contract deal with us.

"We have daffy duck, the archies, bugs bunny, josie and the pussycats, that boy band you were eyeing...." he said, knowing I was eavesdropping.

I giggled softly, dialing the phone absent-mindedly, when my phone stopped at their phone number.

"Hello, hey, how are you?" The boy on the other line said, a smokiness to it, as if he'd been thinking about someone.

"Are you the boy, the one who can sing, with-" I stopped, I didn't even know him, but I wanted him to sign for me?

"You know it, you are pretty impressive yourself, but women like you can make men like me sing a little better in the sheets..." He said softly as I could feel his hot breath on the phone, his musky cologne smelled like liquid death.

I smiled, giggling like a schoolgirl, "So, you wanna be my entry in the contest?" I asked as I tried not to squeal when he said "yes"

"Anything for you, my little angel..... when should I swing by your office?" He asked as I looked around nervously.

"Right around night..." I whispered, as he told me bye, as I pressed end on my phone.

I squealed excitedly as I smiled, I needed two more entries for the contest, I randomly picked some cool-looking duo of 'bugs and daffy'.

They looked so cool, and I was able to get them before other big leagues like my friend Betty Boop or Sally Swing, maybe even Holli Would.

I smiled as Roger softly picked me up and spun me around, we had our cast, and I was now hoping that I would go somewhere other than the wasteland.

My other acts like Oswald or Felix were well....

I don't wanna talk about them....

I prayed that these ones wouldn't fail....

As I played patty-cake with Roger in the dark, bitting my lips as I dreamt of fame..

....

i'm so glad someone agrees about jet, everything you said is a big part of me seeing her as the poet of the trio!! (i also like the sad parallelism of both poets dying, assuming we see the adult trio as theo=soldier, lapin=poet, amethar=king).

as for ruby as the king, her extreme parallels with amethar are exactly what make her the king to me. amethar never wanted to rule, politics are not his passion or forte, but all of his sisters died, and so he became the king. ruby grows up knowing that even though she is still a princess, she is free from the duties her sister holds, but when jet dies, she has to carry the weight of her sister, including her responsibilities. she doesn't want to be the king, but she doesn't have a choice.

this is how i see the soldier/poet/king roles in general: as something of a tragedy. take the adult trio: amethar is the unwilling king, of course, but the same could be said of theo and lapin as well. theo is a great soldier and loves protecting the rocks family, but as a young man he showed an interest in magic, and he's very sweet and mild-mannered. lapin is a powerful scholar and very measured with his words, and though we don't know much about his life before the sugarplum fairy, but at the very least he was inquisitive and daring. it's impossible to know who these men could have been if their lives weren't so heavily shaped by war. liam is the same—a kind, sensitive boy turned into a ruthless warrior through the loss of his best friend, innocence, and childhood.

jet shows promise as a leader and a warrior, but before she is forced into a position where developing these skills becomes vital, she shows passion for and takes joy in knowledge, like the poet. and because she dies so young, she is saved from being iron-cast into another role by trauma and war. liam and ruby get to (have to) grow up.

i know it's probably all been said before but my soldier poet king hot take for the kids is that liam is the soldier, jet is the poet, and ruby is the king
