Digimon Data Squad (Savers) - Episode 40

Woohoo! 40 episodes 🥳 I see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

Once again, this episode was boring in the first half and then got exciting towards the end. I just kinda zone out during the battle sequences and this was mostly that.

Also, I unfortunately was spoiled for the reveal of Yggdrasil's identity by MAL, but I'm not mad cuz I probably should have figured that one out myself 😅

Notes:

Craniummon totally looks like he was inspired by Skeletor from He-Man crossed with Zurg from Toy Story. I like his cool Q-tip sword

Gotsumon is back for comic relief reasons. Honestly, most of the scenes with him weren't that funny but I liked his voice. (I noticed he used the uber polite "watakushi" pronoun)

I laughed like an 8 year old when Masaru confused the Japanese word for "den" with "butt." I think what sold the joke was everyone's understated reaction and correcting him.

There doesn't seem to be any acknowledgment in this version of Digimon that digimon were created by humans. Like the digimon want humans dead and kinda see them as like colonizers or something, but surely "digital monsters" would not even exist if not for humans, the inventors of computers? I'm not saying digimon can't be against their own maker, but it feels like they're acting like the whole digital world is completely organic and unrelated to humans or something. Like, can we get an origins lore dump for the Savers AU please?

Why does Masaru's dad have a robot voice filter in the dub? I guess they wanted him to sound more ~digital~

Wait so...Masaru's dad was Yggdrasil all along? There wasn't a Yggdrasil before he showed up? What about Yggdrasil in the X-Evolution movie? I need answers!

Masaru punching a sword was pretty silly (the fact that it worked so well was even sillier).

Very fun seeing all the royal knights finally assemble. It's kinda like Frontier DLC or something haha. UlforceVeedramon is a new one. I like the colors and the cape but the head design is underwhelming.

I like how we get exactly one (1) memory between little Masaru and his dad before the reveal. That felt kinda weak. I guess they didn't do a lot of planning ahead when writing this show because they could have built this up better with more flashbacks in previous episodes. Betrayals are less devastating when you barely know someone. All that being said, the memory was pretty adorable and so was baby!Masaru's high pitched voice.

Masaru's dad is wearing a weird full body leotard thing. Looks goofy as heck.

What in the deus ex machina was that final scene!? A pretty crazy looking digimon saved them, but it kind of went by too quick for me to absorb the design. I'll wait til next episode to get into it. The out of nowhere of it all was unintentionally funny though.

[1] Social credit score (letters A-F)

At birth, you are assigned the social rank of the average of your parents/guardians. Upon registration with a guild or a personal-record organization, you are assigned a social rank that will improve based on merit and public accomplishments, or will decay based on recorded unlawful or criminal activities. Robots and AI infused with magic can determine between "good acts" and "criminal activity" with near-perfect accuracy--- due to advanced and computerized surveilance, other Natural Intelligent Species (eg. human, beastkin, vampire, elf, etc) oftentimes do not need to intervene with correcting the documentation.

Although these happenings are technically public events (eg. someone gets best employee of the month, and it is posted on the workplace's website. That is technically public information, or considered "public event"), the guild documents recording such are considered personal documents, and thus only accessible by guilds or "governmental" agencies. Instead of immediate arrest, a person can be hunted down only after reaching a certain low credit score (However, this rule is voided if the person is a repeat offender of the law.) Note that different crimes have a point-score attached to them. This means someone who has killed another being will have a worse score than someone who has robbed a bank.

Establishments and services are also restricted for specific credit score. For example, if John Doe is a serial bank robber, then he might have a rank of F. And since the restaurant across the street is a minimum of D rank, he cannot be served at the restaurant due to his F rank being lower than D. This feature also allows the proliferation of vigilante or gangs in large cities. According to most definitions, the Solarpunk genre aims for community and harmony, which could make an interesting controversy between law and morals for the people inhabiting our fantasy world. While something may be illegal in the eyes of the law, it may be correct within morality. And vice-versa. With that said, establishments such as vigilante hideouts can also be limited on the upper level to promote community and feelings of familiarity with individuals, such as "Let's make the upper limit rank E, so anyone D rank and above cannot enter our hideout."

[2] Nobility and Working Class (profession names)

You are assigned a social rank from birth, essentially inherited worth from the rank of your choice between your guardians. For example, if John Doe's mom has a rank of Farmer, and John's dad has a rank of Royalty, then John Doe when he is of age, can choose to either inherited the social rank of Royalty or of Farmer. As a child he would be taught both concepts of working the fields, and also being educated in the royal nobility lessons.

These ranks are legally unchangeable in name. However, some people do leave their lives of royalty and live frugally, or vice-versa. Those people would be royalty only in legal name, but consider themselves a regular person.

Traditional fantasy media tends to have the "peasants" or "working class" looked down upon. However, since our project is solarpunk genre, promoting harmony and community, the Nobility vs Working Class would instead borrow some ideas from "the Republic" (philosophy book). There would be social ranks such as professions, and no profession would be considered higher or valued more than than the other. For example, the farmer cannot work the fields and make money to survive without the protection and economic flows brought about by the royalty, and the royalty cannot eat food to survive or conduct meaningful trade without the support of the farmer. This codependence and symbiotic relationship is acknowledged strongly. However, this does not mean the world is without conflict in this regard, as people will always have different opinions.

[3] Magic Ability Social Rank (numbers 1 to "lim[x]→∞")

You are socially ranked by your ability to harness and direct magic. Every being is able to direct magic one way or another, and the extent of their abilities are measured with a number that increases during the course of their life, proportional to the amount of magic knowledge/theory or experience they have. No one knows the highest number, or what the number is counting. But it's there, and it provides a benchmark for magic direction ability.

This encourages the founding of magic schools/colleges/academies and various methods of study. Note "methods of study" rather than "levels of study" for magic (you guys voted no magic rankings!) and instead anyone can learn any type of magic direction provided they took the fundamental theories in their general education school or something related.

It's discovery and extensive study is the culmination of all known human knowledge and science; its true definition refined and discovered further through the evolutionary paths of various fantastical beings (elves, beastkin, vampires, etc) for hundreds of years.

It is the thing that brings life and animation unto all living creatures, the tiniest hidden particles that enable an object to function at its best capacity. The modality of magic is somewhat rooted in logic; it is mathematical and physical to some extent. Yet magic is also expressed through the mental-- humans / intelligent beings understand it by defining the way it is expressed through semantic phrases, or through emotions (eg. "magic can express the will of the heart" or "your intent influences the direction of magic". To direct magic, the physical work and the mental route processes must be in one accord.

Magic cannot be controlled, as it is a mysterious force of nature, but through careful study, it is able to be be sent forth or harnessed, directed and managed for various usage and effects.
