The Royal Hotel (dir. Kitty Green) x VIFF 2023.
Julia Garner and Jessica Henwick star as American backpackers travelling across Australia when they run out of money and are forced to work as bartenders in a remote mining town full of misbehaved men in the Outback. It's a harrowing drama hyper-aware of the male gaze and the inherent danger of existing as a woman in a male-dominated environment fuelled by alcohol and a severe lack of opportunity for heterosexual gratification.
Screening at the 2023 Vancouver International Film Festival as part of the Showcase series at the Park Theatre on Sept. 28 and Rio Theatre on Oct. 5.

Tipper lorry taking boulders to the beach to reinforce the Cleveleys sea defences. The Venue, in the background, used to the the Royal Hotel, where I drank several swimming pools worth of beer as a younger man.

According to Low, the night was not over.
The landlord came into the room & Mr Uhr started to call him "a bloody loafer" "a damned young rogue" and other magisterial flowers of speech. Reggie Phillips the landlord told Uhr to be quiet, & that this was a free country. Uhr then struck him, but Phillips got the better of him, knocking him down & then slinging him off the verandah. I may mention that Phillips is less than half the size of Mr Uhr.

If You want The Actual Woman Experience (I assume, obviously), then instead of watching "Barbie" and cheering Mattel for doing minumum of effort, please watch "The Royal Hotel" that while telling about two girls on a getaway to Australia (theres even Hugo Weaving as a terrible disguisting guy!), unravels like a scariest thriller, giving You the sense of unease and paranoia with each minute.
And oh my god, Julia Garner is my favourite protagonist of the year. Her performance here is absolutely amazing; nuanced and so fucking powerful. Just give her an Oscar RIGHT NOW.
