HOUSE SHOW TOUR 2017
Once again I’ve been out on a run of dates (house shows and venue shows) across Canada and, once again, I’ve returned home with a load of stories, new friends and a full heart.
A very special thank you to: The Larsen-Nantel’s - This was the first house show of the tour and it was such a great way to start things off. I’ve been friends with the hosts for a while so not only did I know them, but I also knew a few of the attending guests as well. It was a great night and I left feeling excited for the rest of the tour. The Capitol Ballroom - This was the first venue on the tour and the first time I’d played live with a drummer and a bass player accompanying me in almost 4 years. We had a great time playing and meeting everyone after the show. We thoroughly enjoyed the opening band Ocie Elliott as well. It was great to be playing back on the island again.
The Fox Cabaret - We made it back to Vancouver the next day for another show as a trio. Despite my nerves we had a great time playing for everyone. A huge thank you to Darren Parris and Ali Siadat for playing with me on those two shows. I hope to be performing with a band a lot more in the future!
The Dream Cafe - After a few days off my friend Dave Warne and I headed up to Penticton for the next show. I played two 45 minute sets to a full room of great folks. I had a terrific time and was pleasantly surprised to find out that we were being put up in the suite above the venue for the night. Great food, great people, good show.
The Almanac - We drove to Edmonton for the next show and shared the night with some incredibly talented artists. Cory Danyluk started off the evening, Barry and Michelle Patterson with their son Sam were next, then Steph Cameron played. They all played solid sets. It was great to get to listen to everyone play. I had an amazing time and I hope I get to come back again soon.
The House of Commons - Next was a house show in Calgary. The House of Commons is a great little spot where a group of people live together and are very active in their community. They put on house shows, they have free dinners for the homeless, and they just do life together. I’d played there years ago on a tour with my good friend, Zaac Pick and it was so nice to be back again. We spent the night and headed off the next morning - back towards Edmonton.
The Hoffos’ - My second cousin and his family live just outside of Edmonton and they were kind enough to come to our show at The Almanac and then put Dave and I up for two days even though we weren’t performing at their place. We had such a blast spending time with them. They are an amazing family and our two days together just flew by. Apart from the scotch, card games, great food, jam sessions, swords, and hot tubs, we also got to join my cousin in a high school science class where we saw real cow lungs being inflated and a dissection of a cows heart! It was awesome.
The Brandon’s - Our next show was back in Calgary. I’d played at this home twice before so it was great to be back again. Our host is amazing at making people feel at home and has said that she wants her home to be like a B&B for traveling musicians. Dave and I had a great time playing for them and, when they surprised us by insisting on a second full set we happily (read: nervously) obliged! It went super well and we had a great time with everyone. The McKenzie’s - We had another house show in Calgary the next night. We arrived to find a house full of lovely and welcoming people. We ate a great dinner, played the show, and had a few drinks. Even though it was our first time meeting the McKenzie’s, they quickly put us at ease and made us feel like old friends. Great folks, and a really lovely night.
Elliot Home + Lifestyle - We drove to Medicine Hat for our next show. We played in a lovely little shop on a cold windy night. The show was opened by the amazingly talented, Kyle Church (check him out!), and then we took the stage. Everyone was so attentive, it was such a fun show. We stood around afterwards swapping stories and meeting everyone before heading off and driving through the night to make it home the next day. The Parker’s - After a few days off at home, Dave and I flew out to Toronto and met up with the Parker’s. Theyd also hosted me in the past so it was great to get to see them again. We played the show at their friends place where I met two of my biggest fans - the sons of our host who were around the ages of 6 and 8. We had a great time playing for everybody before heading back to the Parker’s to watch a movie in their famous garage/theatre. It was another good night. The Dakota - The next night we played a show at The Dakota in Toronto. We played two sets and had a wonderful time. We met a lot of new people and saw some old friends as well. It was such a fun night. The crowd was great, the staff were great and we just loved getting to play for everyone. Jesse Milns - The next day was a day off but my record label had been able to schedule a photoshoot with a very talented young photographer in the city. I was hesitant as I really don’t like pictures of myself but Jesse was a breeze to work with and we actually had a lot of fun. I was immediately put at ease with him and we had a great time. Chris & Heather - We didn’t play a show at their house, but Chris and Heather are friends of ours and they kindly let Dave and I stay with them for the two nights we were in town. It’s amazing how much of an impact getting to stay with friends has on you when you’re on the road. Not only does it save you the cost of a hotel, but it also helps your overall mental state. I can’t thank them (or the rest of our friends who have put us up on this tour, or any other) enough. Maxwell’s - Our next show was in Waterloo. We arrived to find a great room and lovely staff. Our opener was a really nice guy named Ryan Valentine who played a great set before we took the stage. It was a solid turnout and I was happy to get to meet just about everybody at the merch table after the show. I hope we get to come back and do it again soon. The Rosewood Room - We drove to London for our next show. I’d never been to The Rosewood Room so I didn’t know what to expect but it was a great little venue and the crowd was awesome. The openers were two local acts (Cameron Jericho and Brock Laroque) and we enjoyed listening to them before we played our set. It was so nice getting to meet everyone afterwards. Tonhof Productions - Next we made our way to Listowel for a house show. Jasmin and Tracey (the two halves of Tonhof Productions) had hosted a house show of mine on the last tour, but I’d had to leave right after the show to catch a flight back in Toronto. It had been disappointing to have had to leave right away and it had stuck with me so I was very happy when they booked another show and I knew that we didn’t need to leave right after the performance. We had a great time playing the show and were treated to a delicious dinner and breakfast the next day before heading out. They were great. The Blacksheep Inn - Our next show was in Wakefield, Quebec. I’d never been but I’d heard really good things about the town and also about the venue in particular. Once we’d arrived it became obvious why that was. The staff were amazing and the venue was incredible. We had a terrific turnout on a Sunday night and were thrilled to get to play for everybody. It was such a fun night meeting everyone, seeing a few old friends and getting to play at a wonderful spot. I hope we can do it again soon! Mel & Mark - A couple of Dave’s friends who I’d never met before (but who I’m claiming as my friends now, too) put us up in town after the show and fed us dinner and breakfast. It was so kind of them and it meant so much to me. Zach & Brie - We had the next two nights off in Montreal and had the chance to stay with more lovely friends. We stayed up late at Dieu Du Ciel enjoying some amazing beers, we went to a Nordic spa on a boat, and we got to see a bunch of our pals who live there. It was perfect. The Young’s - We drove from Montreal to Cape Breton for our next show. I was fighting a cold but we arrived to find that we’d be playing a house show in an amazing house right on a lake. The host and I had been trying to book a house show for years so I was very happy that we’d managed to finally make it happen. But I felt really bad being sick. We played the show and everyone was so kind. It was a lot of fun but I’m determined to do it again healthy! Pam, Mark, Rodney & Celeste - The next house show was in Sydney, NS. We were playing in the town firehall. Our hosts were two amazing couples who were some of the most hospitable people I’ve ever met. My cold was getting much worse and they gave me water, whiskey, Buckley’s and tissues. We played two sets that night and had a great time  - but again, I felt so bad being sick, I am equally as determined to come back and play another show for them when I’m healthy! We ate like kings before heading to bed and left the next day already excited to come back. The Carleton - The next show was supposed to be in Halifax but I woke up on the day of the show and my voice was almost a full octave lower than normal. I couldn’t sing when I tried and I was very saddened to have to cancel the show. I hated letting the folks down who were planning on coming to the show but it just wasn’t possible and my health was not improving. I spent the next 2 days in a hotel eating chicken soup, drinking litres and litres of water (with some Buckley’s as well), and sleeping as much as possible. My deepest apologies again for any inconvenience cause by the cancellation of the show in Halifax. The folks from the Carleton were incredibly understanding and so kind about the whole thing. I’m already looking into how I can come back asap and make it up to everyone! Grimross Brewing, Roots & Soul Music Promotions, and Side Door - Our next show was in Fredericton. Our host was a great guy named Eddie who somehow transformed a warehouse into the most intimate room with a great vibe. It was my first time ever playing there and I was very excited for the show. I wasn’t fully better yet, but I was determined to play the show and get back to performing. Dave and I loved getting to play for everyone and the crowd was fantastic. There were a lot of friends there as Dave had gone to University in a town close by so we got to see a bunch of familiar faces and meet a bunch of new people as well. It was great. Also, Side Door is a company that puts on house shows and they were fantastic to work with. It was a good night. A big thank you to Preetam Sengupta for a great opening set as well. Greg & Linda - More amazing friends who were willing to put us up for the night. We headed out the next day for a long drive from Fredericton to Inkerman, ON. Greg and Linda were old friends of Dave’s but it was my first time meeting them. We stayed up a bit, having some drinks, telling some stories and playing some music. It was an absolute pleasure meeting them and I was so grateful to them for letting us stay over. The Keon’s/MacFarlane’s - If you’ve read any of my previous house show updates or thank-you’s then you’ve probably read about the wonderful and crazy adventures I have had with these lovely folks. Even though they weren’t scheduled to host a house show, they were willing to put us up for a night before we had to head out to Toronto the next day. We got there around 7 and had dinner before sitting out by a fire in the backyard. We had some drinks and Dave and I ended up sitting in the back of a 6-wheeler with some more beers while our host drove around the property looking for wild turkey’s nesting in the trees. It was fantastic. We didn’t get to bed until almost 4am, but it was well worth it. Chris & Heather (again!) - We drove back to Toronto and our amazing friends put us up again for another two days. I had to do a video shoot on one of our days off, but they were super flexible and accommodating. We had a great time seeing them again and the two days went by too fast. It was so kind of them to put us up. David Schuurman (Ball of Yarn Films), The Field, Nettwerk, Amber Amar, & Sarah Davidson-Gurney - All of these amazing folks came together to make it possible for me to be able to shoot two music videos on a day off while we were in Toronto. It wouldn’t have been possible without each of them and I am very grateful to everyone involved for making it happen! It was a similar thing to working with Jesse. I don’t like being on camera, but David and his team made it really easy and it went well! I can’t wait to share the new videos. Jonathan, Jon & Season - We played a house show in Toronto next and it was another great night. We had dinner with the hosts and a few of their friends and then hung out with them before the show. We had a great turnout and everyone was so kind - it was a pleasure to get to perform for them. We had lots of great conversations before heading out and staying with our friends, The Mighty River, who were also playing in town (check them out, too!). The MacDonald’s - Our next house show was in the small town of Tavistock. We met our host and had a lovely dinner with her before her guests arrived and we played the show. We stayed up talking and laughing and telling a few ghost stories - it was a lot of fun. Pyung, Scotty, & Danny - We played our next house show in London, ON. Our hosts were a couple young guys who were all attending the local university and we had a great time meeting them, playing for them and hanging out as well. There might’ve been some beer pong involved later on in the night. I can’t remember who won though.. The McPherson’s - This was a special show. It was the 4th time these lovely folks had hosted me for a house show and it was so nice to see them all again. We had a great time playing for them and their guests and it was so nice getting to see some familiar faces in the crowd. We hung out for a little while afterwards before heading out and getting some sleep. Hopefully we get to do it again at the cottage next time! The Boyle’s - This was the 2nd time I’d played a house show at this host’s home. It was another beautiful night. Our host has a knack for surrounding himself with truly amazing and loving people and that really shone through on this night. It was so good to see him again and so good to get to play for him and his friends/family. Plus, mimosa’s and jazz for breakfast the next day was pretty classy. The Huston’s - We drove to Strathroy for our next show and arrived to find a shed next to the house full of chairs, Christmas lights and a wood stove nicely warming the room. Immediately the place had a very good feel to it. I was really blown away by the hosts hospitality and their kindness - and also by the kindness of their guests. It was like stepping into a very special community and immediately being made a part of it. They’ve been putting on shows in their shed as a part of their #shedconcertseries for a little while and it was an honour to get to join the list of musicians who have played there. A special night and one I hope we can recreate again in the future! The Jillard’s and Side Door -  Our next show was in Hamilton in the home of a local luthier. This was the 2nd Side Door show on the tour and we had a great time playing it. We played the show to a lovely group of folks and then the host and I stayed up for a bit sipping whiskey and having a really great conversation. It was good for the soul. Miriam, Glenn and Side Door - We headed to Peterborough for our next show. We met our hosts and set up for the show. We had some delicious Thai food for dinner and spent most of the meal laughing and taking turns telling stories. After dinner the guests arrived and we had a great time playing to everyone. It was a really nice night. The Hall’s - Our last two shows on this tour were at the Equator Coffee shops in Almonte and Westboro. The owner is related to me and she and her family were kind enough to put Dave and I up for the whole time we were in Ottawa. We had a great time at both of the shows and it was so nice to get to end the tour with family. Dave Warne - Lastly, I would like to thank my dear friend Dave for joining me on this long tour. Dave and I had never toured together before this run of dates and I haven’t spent a lot of time playing my songs with other musicians. Whatever nerves I had about our performances or about being stuck in a car with one other person for seven weeks were not just put to rest - they were blown away. Dave is a fantastic musician and a great guy but, much more than that, Dave is a very good friend. I wouldn’t have been able to make it all the way through without him on this one. Also, there’s not a long list of people who are willing (or able) to jump onto a seven week tour across Canada with less then a months heads up - to sleep in strangers homes and sketchy motels for 50 days, learning all the songs on the fly and living out of a bag the entire time, but Dave just nailed it. I can’t say thank you enough to all my hosts and the venues and to everyone else who was involved in this tour. Coming out to a show, buying some merch, sharing my songs, streaming my music or just offering a kind word means so much. It’s how I get to keep doing this and without you all I wouldn’t be able to, so.. THANK YOU! I hope to do another house show tour in 2018. More soon, -joshua

Keeping at Really Beach Residence North of Sydney
On a new go to to Sydney I ventured outside of the metropolis to find the Central Coastline. Despite possessing lived developed up in Australia and travelled to a lot more than 70 countries in the environment, until finally this journey I still had not discovered this component of my home region.
A few years back I produced a promise to myself to see more of Australia. Much too generally we go in research of overseas locations, cultures, food and languages diverse too our possess. Also often we neglect what is in our personal backyard.
Due to the fact then I have travelled to the Northern Territory to uncover the correct Aussie outback, frequented several of the concealed islands of Australia together with Norfolk Island and the stunning Lord Howe Island. I have slept less than the stars when heliswag camping in the Flinders Ranges and travelled to the planet renowned Kangaroo Island to see (you guessed it) far more kangaroos than I have ever seen in my lifetime.
Quite Beach Home
For this journey I needed to get time to change off, unwind and get in the pure natural beauty of Australia’s coastline. The East of Australia is the most preferred pitstop for global visitors, on the other hand a lot of travellers struggle to undertaking past Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coastline. Much of the attractiveness (as is the case in most sections of the environment) is in truth exterior of the towns, just a limited drive or teach trip absent.
Rather Seaside Household is located in the Central Coast and characterised by beautiful seashores, bays to find out and unlimited walks inside of the Bouddi National Park for more active travellers (a lot more on that afterwards!) Thankfully we experienced two nights at nearby Bells Killcare ahead of our continue to be at Fairly Beach front Home, which gave us time to investigate the location just before two days of unwinding in this oasis overlooking Very Beach under.
An oasis North of Sydney
At the time you get there at Very Beach Household it is hard to leave. All the things is which includes in your keep: a few study course lunch on arrival, five system degustation menu in the evenings and a enormous cooked breakfast to start off each and every day. Wines and beverages are also involved as is a cultural smoke ceremony to welcome you to the house and there are a number of bush walks and beach front walks in the residence to burn off some calories for all those meals.
With almost everything catered for, there is no reason to depart after you have checked in. It is the type of getaway that truly lets you to change off, unwind and recharge.
For our keep we checked in to The Retreat, a lovely two-story beach front residence condominium situated adjacent to the primary creating. This area involves a non-public pool and is so personal that you’ll rarely keep in mind there are 3 much more rooms on website. Being these kinds of a modest boutique assets you nearly constantly really feel like you have the overall place to oneself, till it will come time for foods in the key spot and you have a prospect to mingle with fellow company. On our final night we opted for home provider at no more cost, even though we packed our bags for our early morning departure and return to Sydney.
E-book your stay direct with Quite Seashore Household.
Selling prices commence at $2,000 for each place per night time, based mostly on a couples keep. This level involves breakfast, lunch, evening meal, all drinks and the welcoming smoke ceremony. We visited as friends of the house but all opinions and pictures are my very own!

July 12, 2017. River Ryan, NS My day started with a cold shower smelling heavily of rotten eggs...so it could only get better ;) After loading the kids up with bacon and pancakes, we headed to Glace Bay to check out the Miners Museum. Unfortunately things didn't work out to tour the actual mines underground (they go under the sea floor!), but the kids enjoyed learning a bit in the museum. We then headed to Sydney to meet up with Tony's parents, who are also touring Cape Breton. We strolled the boardwalk, then they all had a meal at a restaurant while the dog and I enjoyed a gourmet wrap from the Little Rollin Bistro food truck on the boardwalk...check them out if you're in Cape Breton...super yummy! After restocking groceries (again???), a few of the kids and I checked out Dominion Beach Provincial Park - definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. It was too cold for us to stay long, since we were ill prepared, but it's a beautiful place for sandcastle building and beach combing. S'mores and a bit of campfire, and it's lights-out. We hit the road tomorrow for Cape Breton Highlands National Park!

Maintenance work leaves hundreds without power during cold spell in Cape Breton
SYDNEY, NS –More than 1,000 Cape Bretoners were left in the cold for nearly ten hours on Saturday during a planned power outage, causing concern amongst residents as temperatures dipped well below freezing.
Steve Smith is one of the thousand residential and commercial Nova Scotia Power customers in the Coxheath area of Sydney left without electricity; he says it was a challenge to stay warm.
“Well, we started out today by sleeping in as long as we could, so we didn’t have to get up in a cold house, and then we went out and got coffee, and we will probably go to the mall and get lunch somewhere,” said Smith.
The neighborhood has experienced several unexpected power outages in the last week, leading to school cancellations and business closures.
The Sydney Fire Hall was opened for people who needed to get warm and charge their electronic devices during the maintenance work.
“With the maintenance work that’s going on it’s very important. The temperatures outside are extreme. We certainly don’t want people to stay in their homes, we want them to come out here and enjoy the comforts of the fire station here, and we’ve opened our doors,” said Chief Dave Witzel.
But even with a warm place to go, residents say they wish there had been more consultation done before the outage.
“We would of loved for a warmer day, but again, we couldn’t plan for the weather, explained Nova Scotia Power spokesperson, Paul Breski.
“We had to plan for how quick we could get people here, and how fast we could do the job. We want to do it as safely and quickly as possible,” he said.
Breski says that although the work was inconvenient, it made sense to tackle the 10 hour job on a weekend because schools are closed, and the company deployed more resources to get the work done faster.
He says Saturday was also preferable over Sunday, because of the Super bowl.
“We checked out the best dates to do it. This allowed us to get the maximum amount of crews here and get it done as quick as possible, which was our goal,” said Breski.
Despite not being able to be in his chilly home today, Smith says he understands the logic.
“You can’t have power lines falling down in people’s front yards, it’s important that they did it,” said Smith, “And this type of response – I mean, I was not expecting this. They have dozens of trucks out here repairing the lines, so it’s been phenomenal.”
The power was restored to the area by 4 p.m.

May 21-27, Nova Scotia
May 21st after church, Gae and I headed north, from Dartmouth, NS, Â along the scenic coastal route.
We stopped at Lawrencetown Beach Provincial Park to take in the surfing beach, but were a little disappointed with the rocky shore and no waves.
Across the road was a lake, brown from recent rains and high winds.
The wind was pelting the van with sand and we decided the spot wouldn’t work for sleeping, so we drove to an RV park on Lake Charlotte. We’d hoped to get out and enjoy the beautiful area, but black fly season had popped, and we were eaten alive by small, biting flies each time the door was open. We spent May 21-23rd at the park, relaxing and reading and hiding from flies!
Gae took Luna for a few walks, armed with our head net... the lake looked inviting and I’m sure is wonderful for playing in when the weather turns hot.
I dumped the van on our way out, doing the funky chicken while waiting for the van to empty in an attempt to avoid bites on my uncovered arms. They looked a bit raw after 5 minutes of flapping, walking, and rubbing together to remove flies, partly from all the action, partly from the 20 bites I received in spite of it!
We drove north on the 24th, catching a tiny ferry across one of the inlets. Gae wanted to see Canso, a small town on the northeast tip of Nova Scotia, before crossing on to Cape Breton Island.
The small port in Canso sported a few fishing boats in the harbor.Â
Gae and I stopped at the store to get some bread, and also found some netting jackets with built in hoods to survive the black fly attack. We stopped at Port Shoreham Beach Provincial Park, where we enjoyed the quiet beach and spent the night.
We tried out our new hooded mesh jackets, much to the entertainment of a family having a picnic nearby.
May 25th we drove up the east coast of Cape Breton Island, after a little shopping and gassing up.
A converted rail bed provides a 50 mile bike path right on the coast... here’s Gae at one of the access/parking points along the trail.
Many farms grow grass, but apparently are restricted in pesticide use, resulting in amazing crops of dandelions!
We stopped at Glenora Inn & Distillery, where I sampled a taster of various scotch whiskeys... the 23 year old, very strong taste was my favorite.
After heading south toward Baddeck, we stopped for the night at a small park overlooking Lake Ainslie.
We were treated to an amazing sunset over the lake.
May 26th we continued to Baddeck to take in the Alexander Graham Bell museum... free for the year to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday!
The museum was excellent, and included this full size reconstruction of a 60 foot hydrofoil tested on adjacent Bras d’Or Lake.
We drove to North Sydney, where we stopped at a Tim Hortons to get our bearings, check the ferry schedules and cost as well as weather forecasts. After determining to stay close to Sydney for a couple days so Gae could attend church, we discovered the van wouldn’t start. At Gae’s suggestion, I checked a fuse box containing oversized fuses and found a 20 amp blown fuse that connected the starter to power. Sadly, we had no spares, and I immediately went in to over reaction mode, to Gae’s dismay. I was able to steal a fuse from the emergency flashers (affecting the blinkers as well), so that we could start the van. I looked up the closest parts store, which didn’t have a compatible fuse, so we drove and stayed at the Sydney Dodge dealer in hopes of getting more fuses from the parts store.Â
Gae loved the name of this fast food place across the street from the Tim Hortons.
May 27th I found the service department didn’t open until Monday, so we visited 3 different parts stores before finding a 20 amp that fit the socket. We spent the rest of the rainy day doing laundry and some shopping before settling in at the church for dinner and a movie. We looked at local pools to take a swim and shower before parking, and the very generous front-desk guy and the Sydney YMCA allowed us to shower, since the pool closed in 15 minutes... awesome!
We spent some time reading, where Luna apparently wanted the highest position in contact with her mom... Gae hardly noticed!

Day 23: Hi, Nova Scotia, BRB!
One of the top items on our list for this trip is to make it to Newfoundland and Labrador and visit Gander, the town after which our Gander was named. And today, we were finally going to get on a ferry and sail to NFLD!Â
We had an early start this morning so that we could visit the Hopewell Rocks at low tide. These are rock formations in the Bay of Fundy formed by tidal erosion of the coast, We hiked through the Canada fir/paper birch forest to the edge of the buff, then walked down metal stairs to the ocean floor and walked among the Flower Pot Rocks. They were quite magnificent and really made one wonder about the power of water over time. The thought that the water at high tide would be 30-plus feet above my head kind of freaked me out a little…. It is the sort of things my nightmares are made of! Although it was a big foggy as we were driving there, the fog burned off by the time we got there and we were lucky to have beaten the crowd.
Our route took us through Moncton, and then onwards to Nova Scotia, cutting through more Acadian forests. Other than brief stops at a visitors' centre and New Glasgow, we pretty much busted through the northern shore of Nova Scotia. Just as we were about to cross the Canso Canal to go to Cape Breton Island, the swing bridge gate came down and we had the chance to watch the lock and bridge open up for a sail boat to pass through. We got a teaser of the Cabot Trail from Port Hastings to Baddeck and then we turned east towards North Sydney to catch the ferry to Port-aux-Basques, NL We will return to see the rest of Cabot Trail/Cape Breton and the southern coast of Nova Scotia when we come back from NFLD.
The planning involved for the NFLD part of the trip has been a major focus for us during the research and preparation for the road trip. The main reason is because going to NFLD involves an 8-hour ferry ride and dogs are only allowed to either stay in the vehicle (and we are not allowed to visit him during the whole trip) or they have to be in the kennel area in a hard plastic crate. The first option was not acceptable: even if it does not get hot in the van, not having access to Gimli at all during the eight-hour period is a deal breaker for me! In order to not backtrack on our driving route, we were also going to take a different ferry back, which would be a 16-hour ride. The travel time would have been the same, but it would significantly cut down the driving time.
All these meant that we had to buy a collapsible dog crate of the right material and size that could fit in the van for at least the first month of our trip. On top of that, dogs have to be muzzled when walked from the vehicle to the kennel area, so I also had to get a muzzle for the G-boy. Because the ferry schedule for those two ferry routes are not the same every day, it took me some time to figure out the itinerary that matched the sailing times we wanted. However, with the uncertainty of timing related to the van repair, although I had the ideal itinerary planned out, I didn't actually try to make ferry reservation until a few nights ago. And sure enough, when I went to make the reservation, there was no kennel space available for the sailings that I had planned for!
As you probably guessed, it turned me into a bit of a panic mode! So we ended up looking for sailings that were available and reverse engineered our itinerary. This resulted in us not being able to take the 16-hour ferry and we would have to backtrack on our route, but we are still going to visit all the places we want to see plus all the places that were recommended to us by Chris and Jill.Â
We chose the 11:45 PM sailing so that we could sleep and not "waste" 8 hours of the day. This meant that we had until 9:45 PM to get ourselves to the ferry terminal. We arrived in North Sydney by 5 PM and drove around near the terminal to find a place to hang out. Dan spotted a food truck at a wharf with parking, so we just pulled in and settled there for a couple of hours. We walked on the wharf for a little bit, and as we were re-organizing our van and getting our overnight packs ready, we saw another Class B RV pull into the lot. We definitely saw more Class B's in Western Canada, so we are also on a lookout for others during our travels. The two Irish ladies (who live in Boston) in that van came over and chatted with us about the van and van travel in general. It was nice to see the community spirit among B’s!
We bought dinner from the food truck, got gas, and headed to the ferry terminal to check in early… we arrived at 7:30 for a 11:45 sailing and we were not the first ones here! Connectiviy will be very limited on the ferry, so my account of the ferry experience will have to wait. Until then, good night from North Sydney, NS.
Check out our route on Roadtrippers!

TIP! If your pipes make squeaking and hammering noises, it may be very simple to fix. Exposed pipes need to be properly anchored.
Here you can learn what it takes to become a good plumber! As you can see, there are all kinds of techniques, equipment, and so much more. Since plumbing may be a personal home improvement job, it may seem difficult to find what can work for you. The advice provided in the below article can provide you some tips.
TIP! You need to insulate any pipes have exposure to outside elements to avoid them freezing. You should also keep the temperature in the home above freezing to avoid your pipes freezing.
To maintain a clean, well-functioning septic tank, it is recommended that you clean it out once every five years. This will stop any buildup in your septic tank and prevent any horrible issues. In this case, the cost of prevention definitely outweighs having your septic backing up into your house or failing.
TIP! To prevent your frozen pipes from bursting, leave the nearest faucet on to give the water a way to escape. This helps to relieve the pressure in the pipe and may prevent bursting, which can prevent further damage to your home.
Knowing your tools and how to use them can help greatly in your plumbing experience. Make sure you read all the directions and manuals, while also taking advantage of online resources and the library to help you with your projects. When planning on repairs, plan on having a plan.
TIP! Avoid using any tablets that are meant to reduce odor in and around your toilet. While they may make your toilet smell pretty, they can erode the rubber parts in the toilet and cause it to stop working.
Don’t be tempted to use commercial bleach tablets, blue toilet tablets or any other product that claims to prevent toilet odor. While they may be effective deodorizers, they can damage rubber parts in your toilet. If they become too damaged, your toilet will not operate properly.
TIP! If a plunger is ineffective, you might be able to do the trick with a bucket of warm water. You can repeat this procedure once the water returns to a low level.
If you have a clogged toilet with a low water level and a plunger isn’t doing the job, it’s time to try adding a bucket of lukewarm water to the toilet from a around three feet or higher. The water needs to be at a low level again in order to repeat the process.
TIP! If you discover a problem with the garbage disposal, don’t ever reach into it with your hands to attempt to fix it. Garbage disposals always pose a possible threat, even when powered off or non-working all together.
Put strainers in the bottoms of your drains to stop any clogging agents from escaping down the drain. Each time a filter is clogged, it should be cleaned. Clean bathtub drain screens as often as needed.
TIP! Check the floor for soft areas around the toilet to determine floor damage. Straddle your toilet and gently rock foot to foot to see if your floor feels a little weak or soft.
Avoid placing fat, grease, and other oils into your drain. These substances will clog the drain as they cool and harden. This is especially the case if you possess a garbage disposal; fats and oils cause blades to run less efficiently and slow. Don’t put oils down the sink.
Garbage Disposal
TIP! Ensure overflow holes have not been clogged. Overflows holes can be used in the event the sink overfills, which is a big problem if they are clogged.
If you want your garbage disposal to have the same lifespan as your total home, clean it regularly. Create a routine that uses both normal soaps and natural materials like cherry pits of lemon rinds. With this, you’ll be able to keep your garbage disposal running and smelling like new.
TIP! An enzyme based cleaner is an excellent way of unblocking clogged pipes. These cleaners employ helpful bacteria which process the sludge lining your pipes, and turn it to liquid.
Schedule your plumbing work simultaneously. You may be tempted to call a professional plumber if you have any minor issues, but saving your plumbing issues for one time can let you put that money back into repairs. You will also save because plumbers usually charge hourly rates, so hours they can charge you are reduced if there is only one trip made.
Saving Shower Heads
TIP! When you grind things up in the garbage disposal, don’t run the water while doing so. People think that things will go more smoothly down the disposal if water is used at the same time, but it does nothing to help.
Install water-saving shower heads to reduce your energy costs. Most of our hot water is used in the shower. If you spend several extra dollars putting in energy-saving shower heads, you can potentially reduce your energy bill by $100 or more annually for every shower head used in your home.
TIP! Though you may have no option as to which plumber comes, you can research them at any rate. Your insurance company may schedule a plumber for you, but you can still prepare for them by looking at their website and checking out customer reviews and feedback.
Stay away from drain cleaners! Drain cleaners contain harsh chemicals that can cause your pipes to corrode if you overuse them. Rather, if you have a blocked drain, consider having a professional plumber come out to diagnose the cause.
TIP! If you are looking into hiring a plumber, make certain you do your research first before you hire one. Some plumbers aren’t experienced enough to work on certain issues, and it’s possible they may make things worse.
Research potential plumbers before hiring one. Certain plumbers may not have the necessary skill or experience to deal with more advanced plumbing jobs, and could make matters worse. Look at reviews about plumbers or ask friends and family if they know of one.
TIP! When the time comes and you need the assistance of a plumber, the DCA can supply you with excellent records for review or reference. You can verify that their required licensing is current, and see if anyone has filed any complaints.
If you have a toilet that is backing up, this can be from a blockage. If you cannot clear the blockage, you will have to contact a professional, who will run a snake along the line to clear it.
TIP! Plumbing is not only related to water, there are many other skills required to be a good plumber. Of course, water lines are the most common items that a plumber will work on.
There are a lot of different ways to keep your plumbing running smoothly. There is something doable for every home in regards to plumbing, but what could work for you might not for others. Hopefully, the advice in this article can contribute to your system, and help fulfill whatever plumbing needs present themselves in your home.

Day 5: Moncton, NB – Joggins, NS – Sydney, NS
On the way to Joggins…
Waking up in Moncton to grey skies was a sight I was not surprised by, it feels like April showers are now June showers, so here’s hoping for July flowers! After running some errands (Who forgot a towel? Me? No way, impossible…I planned for everything! *pulls tag off of towel behind my back*), I made my way to Joggins, NS. The GPS said it was on Main Street and I was a little worried about parking. But then I remembered this is Nova Scotia, and Main Street is a little stretch of road with but a few colourful homes, and at the end sits a beautiful sustainable building that houses a remarkable collection of fossils and information about the geological history of the world, and specifically, this beautiful place.
Joggins Fossil Cliffs beach
Your $10.50 entry fee gets you a 30 minute walking tour and all-day access to the beach. It’s absolutely gorgeous, so you can’t miss out on this place.
A print left from a giant millipede…yikes!
After leaving Joggins, I headed to Sydney, NS. I followed my GPS diligently…right up until I got to a ferry crossing. Which I thought was closed until I saw a big boat come across and get two other passengers…without me! I realize now that this is extraordinarily common, and you should always have $7 handy for these numerous 2-minute ferry crossings (which, might I add, are great fun). Then I drive through what I can only call a wilderness paradise, complete with coyotes, white-tailed deer, bats, and a little town called Christmas Island. It’s a remarkably beautiful drive…though I don’t recommend night-driving it in the rain like I did…lest one of those cute deer surprise you!
Tons of coal veins are all over the cliffs! It takes a 10:1 ratio to compress to make coal!
I made it to Sydney after not having seen another car for over an hour and settled into another Walmart parking lot for the night. It was a good day.
Day 6: Sydney, NS – Cape Breton National Park, NS (Ingonish to Cheticamp)
Another day, another ferry crossing!
I was amazed by Cape Breton Highlands National Park. I got to use my Discover Pass for the first time, and it is phenomenal to get into a park and only have to pay for your camping! I felt very spoiled!
The difference between Ingonish and Cheticamp is staggering!
I spent the entire day driving from Cheticamp to Ingonish! The loop should take about 2 hours if you drive it straight, but I stopped at almost every pull out, took some detours, and did some walks, so it ended up being a full day for me!
All of the fishing boats and villages that dot the surrounding area of the park remind me of my mum and her love of the sea, and it made me very happy.
There are a number of little villages outside of the park, some you drive through on the main road, and some you can drive to (like Neil’s Harbour…get your gas here, the man who works there is lovely, and White Point, which has views that remind me of the Cliffs of Moher), and I highly recommend stopping and visiting them!
The further west you go, the higher into the mountains, and the more cliff-a-licious it gets (you can tell it’s late when I’m writing this)!
So I’m going to just pop in a ton of photos in now to show instead of telling you all about how this was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been!
The higher up the mountain I got the foggier it got. It was amazing, I felt like I was on a different planet…
JUST LOOK AT THIS! What?!
So I finally made it to the campground, and as I have been learning, when places say they have wifi what they mean is they have routers…whether the wifi works or not is very dependent on how badly you need it! Ha! If you’re looking for campgrounds to stay at you should know that this one does not offer any coverage between lots, so it’s very open, particularly the electrical/RV spots! So keep that in mind!
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Joooleeennnneee. Love my girl.
Jolene (my van, in case you didn’t know!), got reorganized as I make my way through countless interior layouts to find the one that works! I made myself some soup and turned in quite early because it was cold out there, and the first time I used my little heater, and it was really good! Definitely recommend the little Buddy indoor heater! Being early June I suppose I should have expected it, but I definitely could not feel my toes! Shout out to all the dedicated campers in tents – I don’t know how you did it!
More foggy fog fog!
So that was Cape Breton National Park! It was absolutely beautiful, and I highly recommend spending a couple days there to get in some good hikes and be able to stop along the way!
Until next time! Keep on truckin’,
Sara (and Jolene),
xx

The Best Secret Islands in Australia you need to visit
These secret islands in Australia are your next holiday waiting to happen. Okay okay, not all of these islands are a secret, but the chances you have heard of all of them are slim. The chances you have visited all of these islands are even slimmer. Before you pack your bags and head back to Bali or Phuket this year, consider some of the hidden gems we have right here at home.
Norfolk Island
I still think Norfolk Island is Australia’s best kept secret. Having visited a few years ago, I was amazed by how few tourists were on the island. Norfolk Island feels like stepping back in time to the early 90’s. The cafes are casual, there is no traffic, the cows have right of way and you can legally drive around in a beach buggy. If there is just one secret island in Australia that you must visit, this is it.
Bruny Island
An island itself, Tasmania is full of hidden gems. One such treasure is Bruny Island, a small but adventure packed island in the South of Tasmania. To visit the island you will need a car to cross the channel by local ferry. The best way to see the island is to arrive without a map or detailed plan and just explore as you see turn offs that tickle your fancy.
If you enjoy hiking there are some great day hikes on the island, my favourite being the Cape Queen Elizabeth trail (pictured above). The hike will take a few hours return but the views are spectacular so you may want to spend a few hours more at the beach when you arrive.
Lord Howe Island
Lord Howe Island is perhaps Australia’s most exclusive island. It is by no means a secret but I am always surprised by how few Australians have themselves visited. The island is a favourite for Sydney-siders looking for a quick weekend escape, so if you visit mid-week you can guarantee a cheaper room rate.
Honeymooners looking for a destination within Australia should look no further. The money you will save on not flying International can be put towards the expense of staying on the island and although it doesn’t come cheap, a trip to Lord Howe is unforgettable. There are some great hiking trails on the island as well as many places to paddle board, so be sure to pack your activewear.
Kangaroo Island
Over in South Australia lies a true gem that is mostly frequented by international tourists hoping to see their first (yup you guessed it) kangaroo. Of course kangaroo island is heavily populated with our national icon, but it is also home to a huge colony of sea lions and many more species of wildlife.
Aside from the chance to see lots of fury critters, Kangaroo Island also happens to be one of the best places to enjoy South Australia’s culinary scene. This state is renowned for its wine (see: the Barossa Valley) but the gastronomy is equally exciting. Make sure you don’t miss the Fig Tree Restaurant where guests quite literally dine inside a fig tree on a delicious journey through local produce. Kangaroo Island gin has also made a name for itself, so be sure to allow extra time to stop by on your journey!
Lizard Island
Queensland’s Lizard Island is a favourite of international visitors but many Australians have never visited nor heard of the island. This exclusive island is a great alternative to more popular Hamilton island and offers more privacy.
via Instagram
Maria Island
Another hidden gem in Tasmania is Maria Island, also in the south of the state. It is here where you can view ample wildlife as well as the famous red rock cliffs that have become synonymous with the island. You can visit by local ferry which departs multiple times per day from Triabunna.
Over to you! Will you travel to some of these islands in Australia this year?

Another hidden gem in Tasmania is Maria Island, also in the south of the state. It is here where you can view ample wildlife as well as the famous red rock cliffs that have become synonymous with the island. You can visit by local ferry which departs multiple times per day from Triabunna.
