A Study in Scarlet Chapter 1
This novel was originally published in 1887 as part of Beeton's Christmas Annual.
Netley is a village near Southampton, home to a military hospital that was opened in 1863 and at 435m long, was the longest building in the world at the time. It saw use in both World Wars, but fell into disrepair after that - after a 1963 fire damaged much of the building, the place was demolished in 1966 and only the chapel remains. A military psychiatric facility remained on site until 1978,
The Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers is now part of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, whose 5th Battalion is today a Reserve regiment.
The 66th (Berkshire) Regiment of Foot disappeared in 1881 as part of army reforms, being one of the ancestors of the modern day The Rifles.
The Battle of Maiwand on 27 July 1880 was one of the key battles of the Second Anglo-Afghan War; to put it simply, it was a heavy British loss although the Afghans, led by Ayub Khan, themselves had a lot of casualties themselves. Two Victoria Crosses were awarded for the battle and the retreat afterwards. Khan's forces were decisively defeated a month later at the Battle of Kandahar, the British ultimately winning that war.
A jezail was a handcrafted long-barreled rifle; very accurate for their time, they were generally highly decorated as well. Some saw use against Soviet forces in that particular conflict in Afghanistan.
Enteric fever is another name for typhoid fever; even with modern treatment, the death rate can be 1-4%.
The Criterion Restuarant is located on 224 Piccadilly and a plaque commemorating Watson's meeting with Stamford was added by the Baker Street Irregulars in 1981. It is currently closed, but the current owners plan to turn it into an Indian restaurant with as much decor as the listed building status allows.
The Bunsen burner was developed in the 1850s by German chemist Robert Bunsen and his assistant Peter Desaga.
Police News of the Past references The Illustrated Police News, a sensationalised tabloid newspaper that ran from 1864 to 1938.

So which do you think is the deal?
The children are one week with K and another week with W? And the week she isn’t with them she goes to her parents house? Or she prefers to spend her week with the children at Berkshire and W spend his at Windsor? Even though I find it kinda odd, since K is very much about routines and apparently hates changes when is about her children’s routines, I can’t believe they are taking turns, specially during school (that would have work during holidays but now? But who knows) and W’s schedule has been more busy the last weeks, even the trip to Monaco, so that week wasn’t his week with them (so they were with Carole and that’s why mom went shopping) or he only sees them on weekends.
I mean, I think that if he is spending one week with them can be a new agreement, specially because of his comment about the beard (it seemed that he didn’t see them much or just on weekends), now it seems he has more time with them (or what he is making people to believe). But if that’s the case, he still looks VERY bad, if he was spending 1 week with the children he would look happier (even when he smiles, he looks empty and forced), less stressed, but he now looks even worse (specially today) or does he really loves K that much that he can’t function without her despite having his children one week with him?? Or it’s hard for him taking care of them, too much work for him?

No one really knows for sure. The press knows more, but they're not saying things outright. When The Sun posted those first two paragraphs and then a whole lot of already established info, I knew they're looking for a way to spill the beans without having KP breathe more directly down their necks, while KP still has enough sway to even do things like that. (KP won't be able to influence negative articles into the Phantom Zone for much longer.)
I never thought about Kate--or William--spending time at Kensington Palace solo without the kids until Kate went shopping in London last week.
The thing is that all of the palace staff--cooks, housekeepers, etc.--probably have a specific idea of what W&K's arrangement is right now, but they're not spilling the beans directly. I would suspect some of the royal rota has an idea of what's going on, but perhaps not enough details to justify a full article.
The kids are probably staying at home in Adelaide Cottage, and if not there, then George & Charlotte are able to board at the school. Louis is still too young to board there. Except I don't know if that would be happening when one set of grandparents is 45 minutes away, and nanny Maria is reportedly still working for Will & Kate. I expect that we're going to get more details as the weeks go on, probably starting in March.
I suspect that Kate probably spent a lot of time with her parents a year ago after she got out of the hospital. She was seen with Carole in early March. I suspect they didn't start splitting time with the kids until after the kids got out of school last July because that seems to correlate with William starting to grow a beard.

The Princess of Wales’ Stats - Fourth Quarter
In the final three months of 2023, the Princess of Wales completed 33 engagements, averaging 11 engagements a month. Her overall work rate has definitely improved after the coronation, although her she only undertook 5 engagements in December due to a relatively early break for Christmas. She also appeared in 17 released photos, videos, or statements, and was spotted four times - twice in October, once in November, and once in December. While none of these months have been her “busiest”, November was her busiest November without a tour.
Of her now 29 patronages, she has visited or completed work for 6, totalling 18 engagements in total. In October, Catherine completed three engagements on behalf of the Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales and one each on behalf of the Rugby Football League, the Rugby Football Union, and SportsAid. In November, seven of Catherine’s eight patronage related engagements were for the Royal Foundation, while she also completed one for the 1st Queen's Dragoon Guards. In December, she completed one engagement for Evelina London Children's Hospital and three for the Royal Foundation.
Of her 33 engagements, 16 have been solo while another 9 were when she was accompanied by her husband, the Prince of Wales. Two engagements took place with foreign royals (Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden), while six took place with a range British royals present.
All of her engagements - bar one (her Rugby World Cup appearance in France) - have taken place in the UK, in England (27), Wales (2) and Scotland (3). More specifically, 14 of her engagements took place in London, while 8 took place in Windsor. She has also undertaken engagements in Cardiff, Birmingham, Hull, Nottingham, Berkshire, Moray, Inverness, and Norfolk.
Many of her engagements have linked to her Early Years Initiative, with eight engagements falling under that umbrella, while four engagements apiece were linked to diplomacy, culture and mental health. There were also 3 engagements linked to children and young people, 2 linked to sport and 3 linked to the military. Four of her engagements did not fit into the theme headings I have created.
Clotheswise, her most worn identified designer was Holland Cooper, followed by Emilia Wickstead and Alexander McQueen. Her carried ten different bags, each from a different bag designer. Her most-worn shoe designer is, again, Gianvito Rossi, although she has worn Emmy London and See by Chloe twice, and has two unidentified pairs. In terms of jewellery, she has continued wearing the late Queen's jewellery, with 5 pieces worn. She has also worn four unidentified pieces and four pieces which were once owned by Diana. When it comes to hats, Catherine was seen in three hats - one from Philip Treacy, one from Jane Taylor and one from Juliette Botterill - as well as the Strathmore Rose Tiara and Queen Mary's Lovers Knot Tiara.

The Retired Colourman
Published in 1926, this was placed last in the Case-book compilation, although it was not the last Holmes story Doyle published. That is "Shoscombe Old Place", which we have yet to cover.
A colourman is someone who makes and sell paint. The term is very little used these days.
Lewisham is a London suburb located six miles from Charing Cross; it had transferred from Kent to London in the 1889 creation of the London County Council and today forms its own London Borough.
The Coptic Pope at the time was Cyril V, who reigned from 1874 to 1927, the longest serving head of the Coptic Orthodox Church.
The Theatre Royal Haymarket was opened in 1720 and remains in use today as a theatre. It's currently running a production of Noises Off and next year will play host to The Picture of Dorian Gray, which is going to see Sarah Snook play all 26 roles.
Blackheath is a suburban station today served by electric trains operated by Southeastern from Victoria, Charing Cross and Cannon Street.
Lothario dates back to Don Quixote as a name, but its use for a serial seducer of women comes from the 1703 Nicholas Rowe play The Fair Penitent.
Crockford's Clerical Directory is a book listing clergy in the UK and Ireland.
Little Purlington is fictitous, but Frinton is real. Now Frinton-on-Sea, it is located on the Essex coast and by 1927 was attracting regular high society visitors. Former residents of note include Deborah Watling, who played Victoria Waterfield in Doctor Who. Due to its reputation as a place to retire to, it became the subject of a common joke "Harwich for the Continent, Frinton for the incontinent", the former being an LNER advertising slogan. Probably not a good idea to make that gag locally though.
Third Class trains had originally been ones with wooden seating, but by this time, Second Class had been abolished and the former passengers were now generally in upholstered carriages. Third Class became Second Class in 1956 on British Railways and is now Standard Class.
I have been unable to find when cyanide pills became a thing. Doing a search for them gives you the number of a suicide prevention line first, which is quite reasonable.
Broadmoor is a high-security psychiatric hospital in Berkshire, completed in 1863. Notable patients have included Ronald 'Ronnie' Kray, 'Yorkshire Ripper' Peter Sutcliffe and Edward Oxford, a barman who tried to kill Queen Victoria. Until 2018, it maintained sirens to be used in case of an escape.
