Filly Rose Moon: Abuelita, why do we run a squash farm? It’s so boring.
Abuela: (laughs) it is a little boring, but don’t let your Papa hear you say that.
Way back when I was a filly your age, my papa took my mama and me to San Franciscolt for the gold rush. But he didn’t want gold- he wanted land. He knew when the gold ran out ponies would want to make a home for their own, and he bought some fertile land- but not as much as he’d hoped.
The neighbors to the east had enough land for their farmhouse, but not enough to grow the squash seeds they had brought when they came for their fortune. So your great grand Papi and their neighbor made a deal.
The neighbors would use our land to grown their squash, we would split the profits, and when I and their son-who was about my age- grew up, we would marry and inherit the land and farming skills together.
Rose Moon Filly: Oh. So that’s when you met abuelo?
Abuela: No, my sweet- your grandpapi was another pony. But I’ll let you know how that came to be when you’re older.
Rose Moon Filly: Okay Abuela.

AGSZC AS PUMPKINS
please and thank you <3
Genesis: Rouge vif d'etampes pumpkin; vividly red, moderately sweet, ornamental, but still sturdy, and it's rumored to be the inspo behind Cinderella's carriage, which is why it's also known as the Cinderella pumpkin. Looks especially gruesome when rotting because of its deep red color. The once beautiful flesh decays into a slimy, foul-smelling mess. But it was once beautiful.
Sephiroth: Full Moon pumpkin; one of the larger varieties, sometimes reaching up to 90lbs, uniquely stark white, perfect for displays, perfect for drawing and commanding attention. It has a neutral flavor, it's flesh isn't sweet or flavorful. Its tough, thick skin makes it hard to peel and break into. But it's gorgeous and that's all anyone tends to notice about it.
Zack: Jack-O'-Lantern pumpkin; bright, fun, festive, classic, bold, the one everyone loves and wants to make use of. But it's the one that rots the quickest due to it's thinner walls, high water content, and tendency to be carved. Some might say it dies quite young.
Angeal: Sugar pumpkins; the classic, sweet, dependable variety perfect for cooking, pureeing, roasting and consuming. They're small, making them easy to cut, peel and dice. Eat it. Eat it more. End it's suffering. It was made to be eaten.
Cloud: Acorn Squash; looks like a pumpkin, is actually a squash. It has a touch outer skin and is difficult to cut into, but once you do, the flesh inside is delicious. White acorn squashes are reminiscent of white pumpkins like the full moon pumpkin, but remember! It's a squash. It's also notable to remember that all pumpkins are squash, but not all squash are pumpkins.
*All pumpkins rot in the end.

You get the bright red French heirloom pumpkin Rouge vif d'Etampes! A real looker, but better for decoration than for eating. Like Musquee de Provence, this is sometimes called a Cinderella pumpkin!

Best Pumpkin Varieties To Grow In Your Garden
Pumpkins come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, making it fun to choose the best variety for your garden. Here are some popular pumpkin varieties to consider growing: Jack-o'-Lantern (Cucurbita pepo): Classic orange pumpkins perfect for carving into Halloween decorations and making pies. 'Howden' and 'Connecticut Field' are well-known cultivars. Sugar Pie (Cucurbita pepo): Small, sweet, and perfect for making pumpkin pies. 'Baby Pam' and 'New England Pie' are excellent choices. Butternut Squash (Cucurbita moschata): While technically a squash, butternut varieties like 'Waltham' and 'Butterbush' have a sweet, nutty flavor and are great for soups and roasting. Cinderella (Cucurbita maxima): Named for its fairytale appearance, Cinderella pumpkins have a flattened shape and vibrant orange color. 'Rouge Vif d'Etampes' is a famous variety. Blue Hubbard (Cucurbita maxima): Blue-gray and bumpy-skinned, Blue Hubbard pumpkins are known for their sweet and dry flesh, perfect for baking. Miniature Pumpkins (Various Varieties): Tiny pumpkins, such as 'Jack Be Little' and 'Mini Harvest,' are great for decorative purposes, including table centerpieces and fall displays. Giant Pumpkins (Cucurbita maxima): If you're looking for a challenge, try growing giant pumpkins. Varieties like 'Atlantic Giant' can reach massive sizes with proper care. White Pumpkins (Various Varieties): White pumpkins, such as 'Cotton Candy' and 'Lumina,' offer a unique and elegant twist on traditional orange pumpkins. Long Island Cheese (Cucurbita moschata): Named for its wheel-of-cheese shape, this pumpkin variety is ideal for pies and has a sweet, creamy flesh. Musque de Provence (Cucurbita moschata): Known for its deeply ribbed and tan skin, this French heirloom pumpkin is prized for its sweet, aromatic flesh. Jarrahdale (Cucurbita maxima): This Australian pumpkin has a striking blue-green skin and sweet, orange flesh, perfect for soups and baking. Pink Banana (Cucurbita maxima): Named for its elongated, banana-like shape, this pumpkin has pink-orange skin and sweet, flavorful flesh. When selecting pumpkin varieties, consider your gardening space, culinary preferences, and intended use (e.g., carving, baking, or decoration). Pumpkin growing conditions vary, so be sure to check the specific requirements for the varieties you choose to ensure a successful harvest. Read the full article

I'll post more garden pictures when they're less mosquitoes everywhere >,<
Also, it's that time of year! As of September 12, 2022, Walmart has pallets of pumpkins in stock!
[three images, each showing a large pallet box of pumpkins at Walmart. The first is a rainbow mix of winter squash, the second is all medium white pumpkins, and the third is focused on a single Cushaw squash held in the hand of a white person, which is shaped like a butternut squash, with an orange top, green bottom, and mottled white vertical stripes. End ID ]
Buying "pumpkins" at Walmart and other grocery stores is a quick and easy way to get a few hundred seeds from a dozen or more Winter Squash varieties, and you can use them for homemade pumpkin pie and other desserts after baking*.
Some of the possible heirloom squash varieties (and their hybrid descendants) on display here:
Jarrahdale Blue and Queensland Blue (C. Maxima)
Flat White Boer (C. Maxima)
Turk's Turban (C. Maxima)
Musquee de Provence (C. Moschata)
Rouge vif D'Etampes (C. Maxima)
Porcelain Doll F1 (C. Maxima)
One Too Many F1 (C. Maxima)
The Cushaw in the third picture is most likely Autumn Colors F1, ( C. Mixta or C. Aegyrosperma depending on who you ask.)
To save Winter Squash seeds, all you need is a sturdy knife, some good arm strength, and a strainer; chop the squash in half (carefully! Their hard outer shell makes them store well but also makes them difficult to cut), scoop out the seeds, and give them a good rinse in the strainer before laying out in a single layer on a screen or plate to dry for a few days before storage.
*To make homemade pumpkin puree out of any winter squash: simply chop, deseed, roast until fork-tender, puree, and then allow to drain over a bowl in cheesecloth-- and keep that 'pumpkin juice' for watering plants or perhaps use it in fall drinks?
You can also cook squash by boiling it, as well as in a slow cooker!

Plant pumpkin seeds 1″ deep into well-worked soil, watering deeply at the time of planting or prior. If you are starting seeds in starter pots or trays, plant the seeds 1″ deep into a pre-moistened high-quality seed starting mix. Once the seedlings have germinated and have the first set of true leaves be sure to fertilize regularly with an organic liquid fertilizer. Growing Rainbow Pumpkin Mix You can plant your seedlings in the garden once they are 3-4 weeks old. Do not let your pumpkin plants get root bound, as this will greatly stunt their growth. Pumpkins need adequate spacing to be happy. Refer to specific spacing for the crop being planted. A granular organic fertilizer added to the planting area is a good idea if your garden has poor nutrient content or if you are growing in a new raised bed. Good moisture in the soil is needed. In Zones 4 and 10, this may mean watering by hand often or regular irrigation. DO NOT water overhead as this promotes foliar diseases. Be on the lookout for powdery mildew which is common in Zone 4 and 10 gardens. Growing Pumpkin in Containers If planting in containers, make sure your container is at least 20″ deep. Keep in mind containers will dry out faster because they have more surface area and less soil to hold onto moisture. Mulch heavily on the top layer of soil in the pot to keep the soil from drying out or heating up too much. One plant per container is usually all that can fit. Keep in mind, the most prolific pumpkin crop will need multiple plants for good pollination. Harvesting Pumpkin Pumpkins are best harvested at peak ripeness. This is typically when they have turned their appropriate color and when their skin can not be easily pierced with your nail. Pumpkin Mix Seeds are a custom mix of organic pumpkin varieties that gives you all the colors and shapes of the rainbow. This is a great mix to grow for decorative fall decor. Kids will love the colors and shapes of these pumpkins. Pumpkins are very thirsty plants and need lots of water. Water one inch per week. Water deeply, especially during fruit set. When watering: Try to keep foliage and fruit dry unless it’s a sunny day. Dampness will make rot and other diseases more likely. Species: Variety of Pumpkin. We do NOT make any claims that you will receive all 50+ seed varieties since we have no way of knowing which are which. We pack the seeds randomly, so you will get a surprise pack. What is this? I thought I planted rouges vif d'etampes pumpkins, but this is not a rouges vif d'etampes pumpkin. I'm not even sure it's a pumpkin at all. These have been yellow to orange all along; don't pumpkins usually start out green? Can't remember whether I got the seed from @johnnys_seeds or @territorialseedcompany. #garden #gardensofinstagram #aliensquash #farmtotable

My rouge vif d'etamps pumpkins are doing... odd. I need a bigger container and better soil on payday I think, especially since the vine won't grow but it's LOADED with flower buds? First time growing pumpkins so I have no bloody idea what I'm doing. Might need to pick up some 5-10-5 as well. 🤷♀️ #patiogarden #containergarden #gardening #garden #pumpkins #rougevifdetampes

What do you think of this shirt I found at Target?
Btw I love your blog; your pumpkins are just delightful!
Hey thank you so much! :)
Nice shirt! Tbh it would bother me because these aren’t accurate depictions of any of these kinds of pumpkins.. I have to wonder why they put names at all, haha. But the drawings are pretty and I would totally buy/grow pumpkins that looked like these!
#not to be That Guy but I guess I specifically am That Guy#delicata is probably the worst offender here#rouge vif d'etampes and cinderella are the same pumpkin#i'll stop now#submission
