A Cursed Work… (Part 1?)
“Please, for the love of all that is good in the world, please, please, just ask her out already,” Rowan sighed dramatically, looking up from his novel.
“Eh?!” Natalie snapped out of her daydream and glanced at the fae sitting beside her. The two of them had been quietly hanging out in Rowan’s bedroom, relaxing after a long day of work. “Ask who what now?”
Rowan snapped his book shut and tossed it onto the carpeted floor. “Camelia, you dingbat. It’s obvious you like her!”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Natalie huffed, flopping back onto the bed and staring at the glow-in-the-dark-star-covered ceiling.
“Please, you practically drool every time she so much as glances your way,” Rowan laughed, laying down next to her.
“Okay, fine. I like her. I like her a lot. Happy?”
“Not as happy as I’d be if you’d ask her out,” he said softly, reaching over to grab her hand gently. Natalie bolted upright, pushing away his hand.
“Did you forget I’m already in a relationship with you and Toby?”
“Then break up with us.”
“You make it sound so easy,” she laughed, running her fingers through her warm brown hair.
“It is. Miss Natalie Ouellette, I officially divorce you. Boom.”
“We’re not married dipshit!” Natalie chuckled and flicked his forehead.
“Ow! Of course we’re not! I just divorced you!”
“Rowaaaaannnnnn,” Natalie grabbed one of the pillows and hit him smack in the face with it. The blonde fae laughed.
“Seriously though,” Natalie added, her voice barely above a whisper. “It’s not you I’m worried about.”
Rowan blinked, slowly processing the information. Natalie signed. “Toby, Rowan. I’m talking about Toby.”
“Ohhhh, wait. I’m sure he’ll be find with it. After all, he has that huge crush on Tim. He would probably dump both of us soon enough.”
Natalie rolled her eyes and flicked his forehead again.
“Hey! What was that for this time?”
“Come on! Take this seriously!”
“I am! I seriously think you should dump Toby and date Camelia,” Rowan explained, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck. “I know you care about Toby and me a lot. And the two of us both love you too! But…I think you’re with us more out of platonic love rather than romantic love.”
“What do you mean?”
“I think you’re with us for safety,” he whispered, grabbing her hand and rubbing it with his thumb. “We’re like…a security blanket. You want the protection of being in a relationship with people you trust. You don’t want to open your heart up. But I think you should.”
The brunette squeezed his hand and smiled. “Thank you, Rowan.”
“Anytime. Can I call you my ex-wife though?”
“Only if you’re willing to break the news to Toby for me.”
“Only if I can be your best man at the wedding.”
“Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine. You win dipshit,” Natalie laughed, giving her now ex-boyfriend a tight hug. “I’ll ask her out tonight.”
“You better!”

Their laughter echoed through the walls, mocking him. Was this a joke to them? His hands trembled and he tightened his grip around his hatchets.
No, it wasn’t their fault. It was this witch: Camelia Adamache. She turned Natalie against him. And Rowan…well, Rowan, sweet as he was, couldn’t read social cues for the life of him. He was probably just confused.
But it’s okay, because he could fix it. He would have to.
