#Ross being parental to Ed and Al

I <3 the 5th lab sequence so much is happening at the same time
It's a clusterfuck of different characters and subplots that barely interact otherwise and I wouldn't have it any other way

// mild toh spoilers feat. fma rant
this is my personal opinion before anyone says anything, but the way the fandom wants every adult character to adopt hunter reminds me a LOT of the fma(b) fandom doing the same thing for the elric brothers (but honestly they only focus on ed, who cares about al /sarcasm)
i mean as in EVERY adult character hunter interacts with positively is immediately a parental figure. i'm not saying this is Problematic btw. i just personally get annoyed bc this is how the toh fandom acts towards "found family", they're so obsessed with it that they use any "evidence" in the show to prove that their fanon elements are canon. that is the case of hunter being luz's sibling and camila's son, which is used against ppl who ship luz and hunter or anyone who doesn't see them being siblings at all.
and again, this counts for other characters such as eda and raine. the only character i can see the appeal is darius, bc even in such a short screentime, we see that darius and hunter have some closeness, and we get a reunion at the very least. it might've been more of a mentor and mentee relationship but it's close enough. but something as simple as eda being kind to hunter means that she'll be taking custody, according to this fandom, and it's so obnoxious.
once again, this is the same issue i have with ppl who have ed and al be adopted by mustang and co., izumi or even fucking olivier. i personally don't see mustang being the elrics' father figure, he acts more like their boss (which, well, is canon). while that's kinda the case of darius and hunter at first, we eventually see darius looking out for him, such as teaching hunter how to sew. i don't see that fatherly vibe between ed the elrics and mustang. and while i know izumi sees the boys as her own, she's still like. abusive as fuck. olivier is also far from a parental figure (and she's a huge fucking asshole). the only adult i approve looking out for the elrics is maria ross, especially if you've seen fma 03.
the toh and fmab fandoms are honestly pretty similar in this sense. they're so annoying about their "found family" beliefs that i end up avoiding the majority of the fandom. i never reblog any of the content i mentioned above, aside from some dadrius every now and then. i rlly wish they didn't FORCE you to make hunter and the elrics everyone's kid. it's not like the su fandom where we just JOKE that steven has countless moms, toh and fmab fans take their headcanons VERY seriously.
i guess a lot of fandoms do this but i find that these two communities in particular have a growing problem around this topic.

hello fellow FMA-brain rot friend! i love your fic and am eager to know what happens next with ed and al (hopefully!) reuniting. questions: 11, 17, 20, 21 (would you ever collaborate with a fanartist on a work?), 76 Thank you for taking the time!
Omg hi friend!! So so happy that you love my little brain rot baby, it means the entire world. I promise you Ed and Al will be reuniting. They have a lot of untangling to do, but I'm sure they'll figure it out :)
11. Link your three favorite fics right now
I am SO behind on my fanfic TBR! However, three that I frequently re-read:
Capra by @liathgray
Delicate by @lantur
there is no peace here, war is never cheap dear by @darkpersonapeace
But also special mentions to @mildly-nerdy @asthmaticbee @woahpip @x-rainflame-x @applejellybeansstuff @maples-pages for their amazing writing and fics, you should definitely check them out! (Apple is also working on a CoS Edwin fix-it in case you need more of the blorbos)
17. What do you do when writing becomes difficult? (maybe a lack of inspiration or writers block)
Scream, cry, throw up and tell myself I'm useless and no one likes my writing anyway so what's the point
Then, once I get myself together, I go for walks with instrumental music in my ears which usually helps, I read other books and fics to see how different authors have pulled off what I'm trying to write, watch movies to see how the characters express their emotions, and talk it out with my friends, which usually helps me with plot holes and scene placements, and then at some point, something unlocks. But it can sometimes take quite a while (case in point, chaper 9 is doing my head in)
20. Have you noticed any patterns in your fics? Words/expressions that appear a lot, themes, common settings, etc?
Oh man, YEAH! I tend to use the eyes for expressions a lot, "a heavy silence fell over them" "she softly shook her head", my imagery tends to revolve around fire, water, nature... there's a lot more that I forget. Is there anything you've picked up on?
21. Would I ever collaborate with a fanartist on a story?
HELL YES, that would be a dream! Fanart is always appreciated and I will sob happy tears.
71. Did you have any ideas that didn’t make the final cut of in the cracks of light?
I kinda wish there had been a scene with drunk Edwin flirting before I put Ed through recovery, but oh well.
So far it hasn't been so much about ideas not making the cut, it's more about initial ideas I've had being transformed and refined into something more plot relevant that also raises the stakes.
Like at first I was going to have Ed just having started to date Winry's counterpart before she suddenly dies and the real Winry shows up. But then I thought it would be much more fun for him to "see" Winry coming through the Gate and also having Winry's counterpart be Sarah and Yuri's dead daughter to have a parallel between the parents who lost a daughter and the daughter who lost her parents. yes I'm evil, what about it
Also, the mystery plot was initially going to be a lot more straightforward, with Roy immediately knowing Jake was lying and figuring out Winry had been yeeted to the other world. Then I thought (overthought) more about it and went "hmm but what if this happens, and what if that happens" and... yeah. Initially it was going to be a lot more "narrow", with only Winry, Ed, Al, Roy and Riza as the characters we saw most, but it has now evolved to include Armstrong, Sciezka, Rose, Maria Ross, Fritz, Sarah and Yuri, Russell and Paninya.
And lastly, I thought it would be 10k at most... now we're looking at 100k, if not more.
Thank you so so much for your questions, I have you enjoyed my mini-novel of answers!

ed!
a song that reminds me of them
not what you'd normally associate with Ed, but Something Wild by Lindsey Stirling and Andrew McMahon makes me think of Ed and Al coming home to Resembool
what they smell like
automail grease
an otp
Edwin
a notp
Other than the minor/adult ones? Ed/Lanfan would be a disaster. Ed/Mei would try to kill each other on a daily basis. Which would be funny, but not sustainable alksdjfhhljksd
favorite platonic/familial relationships
All his parents!! Trisha, Pinako, Izumi, the entirety of team Mustang, Maria Ross, Denny Brosh, Alex Armstrong, the chimeras, the list goes on. so. many. parents.
a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with
While I love the idea of Edward being all "I'm a househusband!!" the way Izumi was, I like to think he picks up more interests than just occasionally teaching people alchemy. Like, it must be devastating to lose his alchemy but that's not all there is to life!! Maybe he studies automail engineering too. Or maybe he steps back from STEM a little bit and gets into art. Why not, man? He's so young he doesn't need to do one thing for his whole life!
Now that he's out of the military maybe he starts working with political advocacy groups for disability rights and stuff. idk maybe I project onto everyone too much imagining them as activists because if I'm in this hellhole then so are they.
the position they sleep in
head bent in a way that causes neck pain
a crossover au i’d love to see them in
I would love to see him meet Hyakuya Yuichiro from Owari no Seraph. They're so similar: child soldier protagonists, bad attitude, have a parental commanding officer who's also kind of dumb, involved in some sort of human sacrifice, go against the military, etc
my favorite outfit they’ve ever worn
can't go wrong with a bloodred coat amirite
Send me a character and I'll tell you these things

Baron of Love: Moral Giant
A chapter preview from Ross Johnson’s upcoming memoir on Spacecase Records. Out late September 2020.
youtube
CHAPTER 30: DICKINSON As in James Luther Dickinson or Jim Dickinson or simply Dickinson as he was referred to by friends and strangers alike. I always addressed him as Jim, but if we were playing a recording session or a live gig we always wondered aloud if Dickinson was going to show up. And often he didn’t for reasons of health or personal ones that were highly private. I often felt Jim wouldn’t show up because he felt something was wrong with the context of the gig or session, that something was unlucky somehow. I never asked him about this, just a feeling I had. If he didn’t show, there was disappointment but no offense taken. If he did show up he always elevated things in what felt like a magical way, for lack of a better term        I will repeat a story here I told in the liner notes of Goner’s Make It Stop! about meeting Jim. I repeat stories verbally all too often, but I don’t like to tell the same story over in print or in filmed interviews. I was working as a sack boy in the summer of 1972 at one of the local Big Star (yep) chain groceries. Jim would usually shop for groceries there mid-afternoon Friday while my drumming idol Al Jackson Jr. shopped at the same Big Star on Friday around dusk. They were the only customers who ever tipped me for carrying their groceries out. One day I got the nerve up to speak to him as I was loading groceries into his car and said: “You’re Jim Dickinson, aren’t you, and you recorded with the Flamin’ Groovies on Teenage Head, didn’t you?” Years later Jim admitted that he thought I was going to ask about The Rolling Stones but was impressed when I mentioned the Groovies instead. We had an extended conversation in the parking lot about the Teenage Head session and he enthusiastically mentioned that he got paid $700 by producer Richard Robinson for one night of work on the record. I got in trouble with grocery store management for staying in the parking lot so long, but the conversation was worth it.         There are so many stories about Jim I could tell, but I’ll relate just a few here. When I started playing with the Panther Burns in 1979 he remembered our parking lot chat about the Flamin’ Groovies. I’ve said it before, but I always considered Jim an unofficial member of the group because he produced and played on several of our recordings as well as joining us on many live performances. Recording with Jim and Alex was not often easy; there was always some tension left over from the Sister Lovers sessions. There was also a lot of attitude on display at Panther Burns recording sessions and I often felt out of my league, musically and emotionally speaking. Jim sensed this and one day he followed me outside Phillips Recording Studio when I was taking a mental health break and he told me I had as much right to be in there as Alex, Tav and the other players. Jim could always sense what was going on psychologically among musicians at a recording session and produced accordingly. My favorite production technique that Jim used was the stories he would tell before cutting a take. Sometimes the stories were oft-repeated, but I loved hearing him tell them over and over. I often asked him to tell stories about the late, great guitarist Jesse Ed Davis. He always obliged. During the last few years we recorded together we would inevitably talk about the Klitz and his early efforts to produce them. He always thought they should have been hugely successful. I agreed.        In 2008, co-producer and Reigning Sound drummer Greg Roberson set up a pro-bono session at Jim’s Zebra Ranch Studio for me to record a number of favorite covers and one original about legendary Arkansas rockabilly singer Bobby Lee Trammell. Greg did a great job of putting a band together, drumming so I could concentrate more on “singing” (almost all my solo rant records were done live with me singing and playing drums at the same time) and co-producing the record with Jim that became Vanity Session by Jeff Evans and myself that was eventually released on Spacecase Records. Rather than using booze and pills as my muse for the session, I opted for a herbal concoction that enabled us to record 13 songs in a little over three hours.         During a break, Jim and I went outside to talk privately. Both of my parents had died not long before the session and I could tell Jim was not in the best of health himself so talk rather naturally turned to death. I won’t disclose what we said that day since the conversation was private, but the topic of death was on both of our minds. A little over a year later Jim would be dead in the late spring of 2009.        Jim was a mentor, father figure of sorts and friend to me as he was to an untold number of other musicians. I was going through a bad patch with depression in the spring of 2009 and Greg Roberson thoughtfully told Jim I was rather down at a time when he was gravely ill. Nevertheless, he penned a very encouraging email to me then which lifted my spirits considerably. He did so during a period when his own life was ebbing away. That was Jim, always involved with what others were thinking and feeling. A few years later I sent that email to his widow Mary Lindsay Dickinson because I wanted her to know how concerned Jim was about other people until his death. Of course, she already knew as did her sons, Luther and Cody, the North Mississippi All Stars. I agree with the title of Jim’s memoir, that he is merely dead but not gone. I always imagine him being onstage or in a studio when I perform live or record since his death. I couldn’t have a better revenant or muse.

Ho-ho-ho, it's your Secret Santa! I see that you're not a very demanding kid, and that leaves a lot of room for creative crafting. Great! However, I'll give you one last chance to throw in ideas that can leave your gift a little bit more... personal. Any other preferences or elements besides Royai? Merry Christmas!
ohoho hello it’s lovely to hear from you! OH YES i totally didn’t give away much to leave room for creativity (and I wasn’t sure what kind of gift I’ll be receiving so I didn’t know how I would ask HAHA and I might fill up the entire Google forms with my ideas so I’m very glad you reached out)
here are some prompts and stuff I like, you could choose from here! :> In no particular order!
• “Extended” Team Mustang family (extended, so it could include Rebecca, Armstrongs, Maria Ross, Denny Brosh and other military people! Particularly, I think I would like to see them hanging out on Rebecca/Havoc/Breda’s new bar. We saw their picture at the end credits so I assume Rebecca’s the new Madame Christmas. They could hang out there in celebration to Roy being Fuhrer 👀 if anti frat laws allow lol but we saw Hughes and Roy drink in the canon so I guess it is allowed?)
• Homunculi (Found Family 🥺 They did spend a long time together and they share one goal, we never get to see them ~bond~ on screen)
• Olivier!! Mira!! Armstrong!! (I’m curious about her upbringing and why she and Roy had some sort of rivalry 😆 Maybe something happened during the first East-North Exhibition or waaay before that)
• parental!royai (to edward/winry. this might be a common request but I realized I haven’t seen much fanart or fanfic about it, only meta analysis!)
• FMA x Game of Thrones (I’m not sure if you’re a GOT fan but this idea has been stirring in my mind the minute I first saw Olivier! This would work best as a fanart since it might take a long time planning for a timeline if it’s a fanfic. It could be drawn like a deck of cards where each fma character belongs to a particular house. And the Elric brothers could be Lannisters since “they always pay their debt.”)
• Roy’s upbringing (Do you find it weird how we never exactly know why he wants to be Fuhrer? I would like to know how you see it! We only see fanworks about him being at the Hawkeye Residence but we never knew what happened before that (or even after). Growing up in a brothel, Roy must have seen how terrible people treat the girls he lived with, how they see them like trash and all that. But the question still remains: why did he train at the Hawkeyes? Why did he go to the military academy afterwards?)
• Keeping up with the Bradleys (now this is another idea I’m laughing my ass out. I saw a post here on tumblr saying all the months Riza had with the Bradley’s could be like a sitcom 😆 and I think this would do best as a series of mini comics)
• grown-up Ed, Al, Winry, Mei Chang and Ed’s little kids! (I’d love to see how you envision post-fmab haha. Do the Edward children do alchemy too or does he forbid it? There aren’t much fanworks about Almei and they deserve much love 🥺 We never saw their romance blossom (i felt it was sudden— like boom Al just declared his interest for Mei Chang in the ending, and so I‘d love to see your take on what you think their “foundation” is)
royai-wise (you did say asides from royai so I assume it would be anything other than royai! but in case I misunderstood here are my royai-wise preferences)
• scar burning (hngh angst. The scar was too small to be made from afar so I assume Roy burnt it up close. I always imagined them hugging)
I might prefer the ones I wrote that aren’t royai-centered, for some reason I couldn’t squeeze more royai ideas from my head maybe my brain is too possessive and it couldn’t let go of royai 😆But it would be nice to add some royai elements in those prompts I wrote.
I think that’s it (I believe it’s plenty to choose from! :>) Are those prompts alright? Let me know if you wanted me to provide more prompts! My head is always brimming with ideas I’d love to come to life.
Merry Christmas to you!

Hero Chat watches FMA
So instead of having a million chapters of the Hero Chat reacting to fma:b, as tempting as that is, I figured I could just write down a list of various reactions. I might still have a chapter or two dedicated to some scenes, or just the characters casually dropping a line about the most recent plot points, but for the most part it’s condensed here.
Also, tbh, while everyone except Chloé and Kagami are transformed when having their Superhero Sleepovers, which is when they watch the show, I’m just going to refer to their civilian names because remembering to switch is a pain.
Chloé, Adrien and Luka are the only ones who have seen Fma:B all the way through.
While they do get sucked in, they also make snarky comments and spout trivia fun facts or theories on shit.
If said theories get too spoiler-y they have a separate chat to talk in.
Chloé and Adrien have increasingly specific nicknames for most of the characters. Partly because my fma fics exist in their universe and they’ve read them.
Their favorite characters are Ed, Al, and Greed respectively.
They also have a betting pool going on who everyone else’s favorite characters will be.
Speaking of, everyone’s favorite characters! Chloé teases some of them about ‘kin drama’ because damn.
Marinette – Her favorite is Mei which is kinda predictable. Tiny, super determined, healer who can also kick your ass into next week and is a bit obsessed with her crush….
Alya – She gets suckered in by Mustang’s initial coolness. Then she sees he’s actually a disaster, but she still loves him. Eventually we get around to the whole ‘he has an entire secret information network and actually has a plan to get shit done’ stuff and she just thinks it’s wild.
Nino – Okay, I want to say Hawkeye due to Alya’s fave being Mustang, but also he does admire Hawkeye’s loyalty and the way she always protects those she cares about (especially Mustang but you know). The whole ‘I’ll follow you into Hell’ thing is just a big mood.
Kim – Armstrong. Just…. It comes out of nowhere but also makes total sense.
Max – His favorite is Winry because hell yeah Automail is some cool robotics shit and he now has a million ideas of how to make it real.
Kagami – Lan Fan. Very predictable.
Alix – Oddly enough…. Alix ends up with a soft spot for Hohenheim. It’s kinda complicated for her to explain, but it has to do with similarities between Time Travelers and Immortals. So, you know. She identifies in a way.
We already saw their reaction to Nina.
Everyone is horrified when finding out Philosopher’s Stones are made of Human Souls. The Spoiler Squad is just like ‘told you that Harry Potter was more fucked up than you thought’.
When they get to Hughes’ death…
Chloé, Adrien, and Luka try to sneak out again. But they get caught and everyone’s like ‘oh god oh god what’s going to happen this episode????’
When they do get to the actual scene, Chloé gets a noise complaint from all the screaming.
Also, Envy’s shapeshifting gives everyone flashbacks to Chameleon. (Side note, I like Envy more than I like Lila.)
Alix calls Greed a ‘Himbo’. The Spoiler Squad all die laughing because she’s right.
Everyone loses their shit at the reveal of Fuhrer Bradley being Wrath. The whole thing turns into them all throwing various government conspiracy theories around about what it all means and the Spoiler Squad is trying to keep a straight face about things.
They end up loving Ling, Disaster Child #5. He’s Alix’s second favorite.
There’s a lot of screaming with the Maria Ross plot. Marinette and Alya are the only ones who are suspicious and correctly guess what happened.
Marinette also catches on to another important detail: Ed, Al, and Hohenheim are the only characters who have gold eyes. She correctly guesses that something is up with that. Everyone else kinda brushes it off with ‘it’s anime. We’re lucky they don’t have bright pink hair or something’.
She gets very smug when it’s revealed that she was right to be suspicious about that.
The Spoiler Squad gives about two minutes as a warning for ‘this is the Vore Episode’. Everyone still kinda thinks they’re joking because, like, sure. They’ve seen that Gluttony eats people. But surely that’s not something they can survive? They are wrong. Very wrong.
Everything after the ‘Vore Episode’ though… I mean, you get the reveal of Father, and then Greedling(Chloé, Adrien, and Luka in unison: “Greedling! You’re a Fusion?!)
When Chloé expresses a love of Olivier Armstrong, Luka just looks over and is like ‘how did you not know you were gay?’. Because every wlw loves Olivier.
Oh god. If you thought their reaction to Wrath was nuts, then the way they react with the reveal of Pride is wild. Because yeah, they were all like ‘Aw! Look at this cute kid! He’s so precious and pure! So unaware that calling Ed short is about to get him yeeted into the sun!’. But no. Pride is a little shit who knows exactly what he’s doing.
Everyone is concerned for Mrs. Bradley. The Spoiler Squad does relent and assure them that she’ll be fine.
They’re all down to fight Kimblee within five seconds of meeting him.
Due to previous unexpected deaths giving them trust issues, the whole squad is worried during that scene where Ed falls down a mineshaft and gets a pole through the stomach.
Another thing everyone loses their shit over: Hohenheim’s backstory and just the overall reveal of what the everloving FUCK happened in Xerxes.
Okay, so I know this is a little late to mention, but they absolutely add people to that ‘parents I want to fight’ list.
First off, they establish that all 100% good parents in this series are dead.
Nina’s dad gets added to the list immediately.
At first they put Hohenheim on the list, and the Spoiler Squad wants so bad to defend him, but they know that doing so will be hella spoiler-y.
Once they get to his backstory, everyone kinda agrees to call him ‘World’s Okay-est Dad’. Because yeah he did that one really big shitty thing, but it’s clear that he really didn’t have much of a choice.
On the other hand, Father gets slam-dunked onto the list. Because even ignoring the fact that he’s the main villain, he’s a shitty dad.
This is Chloé’s first re-watch after realizing how shitty her mom is, so she really does identify with the Sins Crew this time around.
And oh boy. When they hear about the Xingese political hunger games bullshit? They toss the Emperor on the list of terrible parents too.
Everyone cries during the final battle. Everyone. We don’t even get a ‘I’m not crying! I’m too tough to cry!’ bit. They’re all just sobbing. Chloé also gets another noise complaint.
They also all decide to rewatch the series and see all the stuff they missed! The Spoiler Squad points out a few
Chloé immediately brings up the first OP song. And pauses it on the fact that the first character you see is Flashback!Hohenheim. Because that fucking kills me.
Luka brings up the ‘Ling technically went through the Gate and it’s never acknowledged’ thing. Everyone breaks.

[Where My Twin Watches]: Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood Episode 39
Last time: The Blondes finally met back up with the Brunettes, Yoki was an idiot who tried to burgle the Leto-damned ARMSTRONGS, and Scar either kidnapped or “kidnapped” Winry. Onwards!
New Intro! We’ve got the two young brothers separated by wind, then the title drawn in sand before it’s white text with a glowing red TC and the brothers running in opposite directions. Are we going to have a Party Split? Nevermind, they just slowed down to the middle of the screen. Bright light, Ed should have brought a hat to this sunny bunch of rocks. Then he looks off all dramatic like as camera goes to Al trudging through a desert before he too does the Dramatic Protagonist Stare. Both brothers back to back against the Xerxes mural ok seriously betting on a Party Split here with all the opposite directions going on. Now the Elric Brothers are running at each other and yep just phased through to become Red (Ed) and Blue (Al). Looking around for each other? Whatever happens I guess Al is with May since he has Shao on his shoulder and her gripping his hand, Ed’s got Winry in unzippered gear on his side. Camera pans out to show Al with May, Scar, and Marcoh to the left, Al, Winry, and Granny Rockbell to the right. Then a bunch more people start popping up? Can’t tell who is on which team anymore. Short image of Al’s Body in the whitespace, becomes a Stone which shatters to show a smug-looking Pride. Now Ed’s running about striking shadow blades in a forest (Ed vs Pride fight?), Al’s in the rocky desert fighting more toothy Pride blades. Wrath in what looks like a basic longsleeve shirt and vest (no uniform?) fighting LING YES TURN AGAINST THE GOTHS MY GREEDY LITTLE PRINCE Envy’s in Titan form getting sliced up by YES BRING BACK BADASS NINJA BODYGUARDS. Now it’s Armstrong The Great looking serious, Sloth burst out from snow to be used as target practice by Sideburns and a bunch of tanks but Kimblee swoops in and blows the shells up. Beard’s walking along with his briefcase frowning towards Central in the distance. Ed and Al stand back to back in a TC in the desert (not as rocky as the one Ed was in, but not as sandy as the one Al was in), shot of the Door of Truth opening and shattering, ends on the Alchemist Watch covered by the title and silhouettes of the Elric Brothers. Back where we left off: It’s a cloudy and windy day in Baschool, where Scar is carrying Winry’s limp form and glaring down at Kimblee. The Ishvalan comments on how they’ve changed positions from the last time they met, the Alchemist says he shouldn’t be so confident. Episode 39 - “Daydream” Oh no Winry’s in trouble so Ed is grabbing Kimblee’s coat and yelling at him for letting his mechanic get captured, Kimblee tells him to move aside while pulling off his gloves (hey, he’s kinda Roy’s opposite in that regard), Ed blocks his arms so that he won’t hurt Winry by attacking Scar. The Ishvalan then shatters the building, creating a nice big dust cloud to walk away in. Kimblee’s about to chase after him but a mustached soldier says that it’s too dangerous to go close to the damaged building, they need to fall back. Oh, and there’s a snowstorm incoming so they have to find shelter! Man, it has just not been Kimblee’s day, has it? Ed, Sideburns, Al and some soldiers are walking along, Miles compliments Ed on his performance aha, called it! Ross Deception! Ed’s not happy about having to play along with the “stupid charade”, though. Flashback! Scar isn’t apologizing for the death of Winry’s parents. She has every right to pass judgement on him. Winry… walks away, reaches into a box, and pulls out some cloth. Oh, wow. It it wasn’t already clear, Winry is Best Girl. Bandaging an injury on her parent’s killer? Ed and Scar are equally shocked at her compassion and what. What is that face. I’m sorry, this is a sweet and touching moment and all, but Scar? What is going on with your face here?
Tumblr media
That is quite possibly the best Does Not Compute face I’ve ever seen. Just, Scar has no idea how to process this. Winry’s saying that if her parents saved his life before, then there must have been a reason. But like Leto does this mean that she’s forgiven him for his murders. She’s not gonna cry though, she promised… wait, I thought it was Ed who promised that the next time she cried it would be tears of joy? Ah whatever. Ok, you’ve got Scar bound up. Angry boyfriend proclamations aside, time to make him decipher the book NO DON’T CALL HEADQUARTERS YOU IDIOTS. Aaaargh. Wait Scar’s asking Sideburns what he meant by “one of your people”, can’t understand how an Ishvalan could stomach being part of the Amestrian military. Sideburns responds that he’s working on the inside to change Amestrian views of Ishvalans, Scar is shocked at such an idea, and that it was an Amestrian that set Sideburns on the path. Scar can only look down. [Scar]: “Look at me. I am a festering wound of hatred born of the Ishvalan War. I am thankful that there is someone like you out there.” Aaargh but just as Scar is realizing that maybe wanton murder isn’t the way to go about things the call goes through, and Kimblee is on his way to “deal” with Scar. This drives Marcoh and May to reveal themselves. Finally! Oh, and now May can patch up Scar’s arm! Outside the Mustached Mook is noting the stormy clouds, Kimblee tells them to hurry up (gee, I wonder if he’ll get there in time?). Marcoh and May are yes thank you for Leto’s sake it took long enough they’re saying that they’ve got groundbreaking Alchemy/Alkahestry research but the only one who can read it is Scar. Sideburns notes that May is the Alkahestry girl they’ve been searching for as well, says that she needs to come back with them to Fort Briggs. Add in that Scar’s needed to read the notes and it’d be just as bad for Marcoh to be recaptured, looks like all three need to go back to the Fort. Ed’s just a mite unhappy with needing Scar’s help, Sideburns knocks him upside the head with the fact that the Goths are pulling some sort of giant TC shenanigans, they need all the info and help they can get right now. Ed stands down after the suggestion that with Scar’s help they can disgrace Kimblee and get Winry away from his clutches. One Ishvalan Oath later Scar’s judgement is postponed… and the Chimeras are waking up, uh oh. The kids balk at Sideburns’ orders to kill them, the Chimeras sadly agree with Sideburns, saying that they can never go back to their old lives. Al tries reasoning with them, appealing to their families but they’ve been told they’re dead. And it’s not like they can go back like this, we’d just be imitating the 2005 Fantastic Four, and nobody wants that.
Tumblr media
But Al does get them to yell that “of course they want their old bodies back”, when they quite reasonably say that it can never happen Al does the helmet remove to show his Soul Armor state. [Al]: “Well I’m going back. No matter how long it takes. I’m not giving up.” Ooh, is Al getting some followers? Watch him form an army out of Chimeras tossed aside by the Goths, take them down with their own creations. Unfortunately the snowstorm’s coming in, meaning that they can’t reach the Fort until it passes. And Kimblee’s on his way, so they need a plan- [Yoki]: “This is a mining town, isn’t it? Why don’t we just go into the underground tunnels?” [Everyone]: *turns in surprise to the secret tactical genius in their midst* [Yoki]: “W-what’s wrong? I mean, this is a pretty large mine, right? So surely there’s a tunnel that can take us beyond the mountains, uh… I think?” [Everyone]: “That’s it!” [Yoki, Tactical Genius]: “H-hey, give me some credit; this is what I did for a living!” Ha! Way to finally pull your weight, you C-tier flashback antagonist! Confirming that the tunnels go past the mountains- wait. Wait wait wait. Isn’t the whole point of the mountains that they are between Amestris and Drachma? Ooh, do we finally get to see another country?! Please let my dream of missionary Drachma’s with Leto pamphlets be a reality! Sideburns gives Marcoh notes for any Briggs soldiers the meet after the tunnel (watch them run into Drachmans first and cause all sorts of problems: “These people have notes written in Amestrian! They must be spies from Fort Briggs!”). But what about Winry? If she just up and vanishes with them then Kimblee will suspect the Elrics of foul play! [Winry]: “Um, I hate to be the one to suggest this, but, uh… What do you think Kimblee would do if I was suddenly taken hostage by Scar?” Whoa, so kidnapped!Winry was Winry’s idea? Props to you, mechanic! Mid-ep pictures of Winry Rockbell and human Jerso/Toad and Zampano/Boar. Ed and Al are understandably uneasy with the plan, but Winry shouts them down about being able to at least choose her captor if she’s a hostage either way. Come on Protagonists, learn that you don’t have to or can do everything by yourselves! Scar again promises to protect Winry before Ed lets him loose, when the Chimeras as to be taken along as well. They’ve failed which means Kimblee’s going to kill them either way… [Boar]: “Besides, we don’t want to give up either.” Look at you go Alphonse, already with your two inhuman followers! Also, they’re just a little confused and upset about all this talk of this band of misfits trying to stop some catastrophe that threatens their families along with all of Amestris. Y’know, just a minor detail. Kimblee’s inbound, better hurry. Sideburns asks wait what they’re back to human? Uh ok, with all the talk about being monsters I was kinda assuming that their beast forms were permanent, not something that they could consciously deactivate. Kinda undercuts the whole “we want our human bodies back” if they can shapeshift back like this. The groups are splitting up (to my surprise its not the Elric Brothers who are going different ways, at least for now), a soldier remarks that Winry needs to remove her earrings ok what. Seriously, what? This just totally broke my immersion, you cannot tell me that now is the moment when having metal earrings in the frozen north would cause discomfort and haven’t been an issue yet, especially when she came up north specifically because her boyfriend’s metal arm was seizing up. But whatever, she gives them to Ed for safekeeping before promising to see him back at the Fort. Ed gazes up after her, clenching his fist and probably crushing those precious earrings that he was just trusted with. Nice going, kiddo. Explosion! Acting! Snowstorm! Those left in Baschool are sheltering in a building, alternately looking at girlfriend’s jewelry, wondering where their fellow Chimeras have gone, and arguing for planning the next leg of the search. Then Sideburns gets a call from the Fort? Ooooooooh, right. There was that whole “forces from Central showing up to look for Raven” thing going on last time. And our guys are walking right into that mess. Whoops. Down in the tunnel Marcoh’s going on and on about how the Rockbell Doctors were widely respected during the Ishvalan War, how they helped all without regard for themselves. Meanwhile Scar’s walking in the back having flashbacks to Winry’s “I don’t forgive your wanton murdering”, an Ishvalan Elder telling Scar that while he should never forgive the Military’s “wanton murder” that he must abide it-
Tumblr media
-to break the chain of hatred, and his brother saying he studies Alchemy to replace hatred with understanding. And here is Scar, following the orders of an Ishvalan who willingly works in the Military to change it, representing the ideals of Scar’s brother and Elders. So what does that make him? Yoki’s having the group stop in an underground office, to pick up a more detailed map of the tunnels. Man, who’d have thought that freaking Yoki would be the most useful party member at this point. Or ever? Inspired by Al, Toad and Boar are pestering Marcoh about any clues in the journal (that he can’t read), they banter with each other about their families. Aw, they’re actually friends! Nice to show that even the Central forces have loved ones, hopefully for real this time after that infuriating Bradley & Selim fakeout. May? What’s wrong? Oh. Oh yeah. Her whole mission was to learn the secret of the Philosopher’s Stone, only to find out it’s based on suffering and the obtaining of immortality for one at the expense of so, so many others. And His Imperial Highness, aka her father, apparently would make one without a moment’s hesitation using any number of his people. So apparently he leans more towards Wrath’s philosophy of leadership than Ling’s. But if she doesn’t bring back the secret of immortality, her clan is in danger from all the others. Marcoh says that the notes might have the humane secret to immortality, they just need to hurry up get to the Fort so Scar can get a-translating. [Ed]: “What do you mean, ‘the Fort is no longer safe’?!” Welp. Just when we get Armstrong The Great as an ally, she’s been summoned back to Central and a Military Officer’s getting put in her place, along with a bunch of other Central forces. So now the Tunnel Team is walking into a hostile environment without knowing. They have to be warned, but how? Ed wants to go but he’ll freeze before he gets anywhere close… [Al]: “There is a way! Listen: send someone who doesn’t have a body. That storm won’t freeze me to death!” Uh, Al? Sure I guess you wouldn’t catch hypothermia, but you’re still a giant suit of steel armor. Remember how there was that whole “Ed’s arm freezing up” problem that was fixed by replacing his entire arm? You don’t have body heat like a living person, your limbs are just gonna ice up. Actually, how the Leto hasn’t that happened yet? Huh. I guess Souls act as armor heaters too, Al’s having more trouble just seeing where he’s walking in the blizzard than actually moving. He sees the path but the winds picks up and the screen whites out from the snow GAH ZOMBIE AL! Oh shit how did Al end up in the Whitespace? Uh, well you’ve found your body? Quick, grab it and let’s get wait no it was an illusion. What, you getting snow madness buddy? Oh. Oh shit. We’ve got a flashback to Barry musing that foreign bodies can’t hold souls for too long, Al’s freaking out about his body trapped in Whitespace, pulling on his soul as it’s rejected by his armor… he can’t think about that right now, he has to hurry. Without the map now, since he dropped it after that vision. Oh hell it’s this asshole. [Uncle]: “Alphonse Elric. Edward Elric. And also… there’s… Van Hohenheim. Izumi Curtis, she’s a possibility-” Aside from all the awfulness of listing off Potential Sacrifices, which is looking a lot more like ‘killing all of these people, not just one or the other’, did you just purposefully knock over Izumi’s piece? Rude, and I can’t wait to see her punch you. “That leaves one more.” New end credits! Rapid guitar music as we race through a 3D hallway/tunnel, outside looks like Ed’s standing in the ruins of the Elric house, Al’s somewhere else standing among some tall square rocks. Flashes of red-eyed Envy, Gluttony, Wrath, Pride, and Uncle (what, no Lust, Greed or Sloth?) A look at Riza’s scarred back with that strange symbol before she turns and I am very sorry for walking in while you were changing ma’am, I’ll be going now. Roy’s still in his eveningwear outfit probably trying to get someone to take all those flowers off his hands, Beard is oh Leto what is happening with your face, are you actually smiling. That looks so weird, stoppit. Oh hey it’s Mama Elric, so sad that we lost you before we could fully appreciate your snark. Ah there’s the scowling Beard that we know, go kick Uncle’s ass. We’ve got Ed jumping and Al and LING YES BRING HIM BACK and a lion and monkey oh my Leto is Al actually going to build a Chimera Army this is the best thing of all time yeah there’s Toad and Boar we are totally getting Rebel General Al. Also there’s Alchemist-Slayer Scar on their side now but who cares CHIMERA ARMY ok fine we also get May and oh Marcoh’s getting in on the action looks like he lost a few teeth wait Yoki no we need you as the secret tactical genius get off the front lines. Selim’s there looking all cute and innocent in his little schoolkid guise until his shadow gets teethy and attacks Ed. Winry’s power walking through a hallway (can’t see if she got her earrings back). Then a bunch of hands reaching up, one larger one grasping a smaller one (which ship will sail?!) before we’re back in the tunnel, shots of Ed and Al and Beard before a final map of the country-sized TC.

My Talk-Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Again? Yes, again. This is the reflection of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. *claps hand together*
After watching the 2003 version of FMA, I had to continue on with the 2009 version.
Plot. Same as the 2003 FMA, Edward and Alphonse have a quest to get their bodies back and are looking for the Philosopher’s Stone. Along the way, they meet new friends, enemies, and many secrets to discover. However, this anime continues where the manga stopped.
Characters. Same as before, so I copied from before. Our main brothers are Ed and Al who goes on a journey to get their bodies back. Trisha and Hohenheim are their parents Winry is a skilled mechanic who tends to Ed’s prosthetics when it needs fixing. Izumi Curtis is the brothers’ teacher who is an alchemist. Roy is the Flame Alchemist who can spark flames with his gloves. His squadron includes Riza Hawkeye, Jean Havoc, Heysman Breda, Vato Falman, and Kain Fuery. They’re the pieces of Roy’s game of chess. There are others who are part of the State Military: Maes Hughes, Alex Louis Armstrong, Denny Brosh, Maria Ross, and Sheska. They’re the run of the villains in the show: the Homunculi, Father Cornello, Shou Tucker, and Solf. J Kimblee. The Homunculi are based on the Seven Deadly Sins: Lust, Gluttony, Envy, Pride, Sloth, Wrath, and Greed. Scar is also a villain, but his story makes it complicating to label him as one. In this version, other characters include Oliver Mira Armstrong, Fu, Lan Fan, Ling Yao, May Chang, Isaac McDougal, and more.
Animation. Once again, Studio Bones is responsible for the show’s animation. They basically had to outdo themselves with their animation. Years have passed, so the animation was more sharp, brighter, and special effects were off the charts. I was always in love with the action and an alchemist’s power. Whenever I see Roy snap his fingers, Edward doing alchemy, and any fight or battle, my eyes were so blessed with the animation.
What makes Fullmetal Alchemist so great. I mentioned before how 2003 FMA was great yet felt unfinished due to the manga still being written. Thanks to Brotherhood, it was able to fill the missing holes. Together, this franchise made a name for itself as a prime example of what shonen anime is. I want to give props to a queen of storytelling who is Hiromi Arakawa. Hiromi did some much research and conduct interviews for her story. In additional, she managed to write a dark story with magic elements. She actually wrote characters with complexity and a major story that wrapped everything so well.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood kicks things up an notch. With powerful animation, excellent English dub, and marvelous story, this anime is amazing as heck. I think I covered why Fullmetal Alchemist is the best, and Brotherhood seriously handled everything with neatness and care. Always remember you’ll find that you have a heart strong enough to overcome any obstacle in your way.

FMA 03: Mothers
Ed and Al’s mother is very important to them and I really like how this show explores themes of motherhood in the show. Therefore I thought I’d write a post about it and the very different types of mothers we see. So, Edward and Alphonse loved their mother. But she dies. They try to bring her back with alchemy. It’s the premise of the story.
Tumblr media
The story begins in Episode 3, aptly titled Mother. Trisha Elric is a lovely person,  taking care of the two boys alone because her husband has left. We see her as caring and encouraging, there to comfort the boys and their worries - she also lets them study alchemy. Trisha also clearly misses her husband but she never lets her fears show to her sons and indeed hides her illness from them. But first Winry’s parents both die, then Trisha falls deathly ill. Her death scene always hits me so hard. Ed and Al are left alone (save for Winry and Pinako who aren’t nearly enough for them). They can never get back what they’ve lost.
...
The brothers travel to Central and we meet Nina, who’s mother is also dead. She feels lonely in a big house with no other family save for her dad and they immediately connect with her. We also meet Gracia (and Hughes), a very positive example of a mother (and family in general). Ed, Al and Nina even get to watch her give birth. They’re still kids so they panic while Gracia is very patient and gracious with them, and she gives birth to Elysia. Ed says mothers are amazing, more incredible than alchemists - he sounds very sincere about it all. Overall Gracia seems very loving towards the brothers. But Gracia is one of the only (somewhat) happy stories we get.
Tumblr media
Here’s a little boy crying over his dead mother’s corpse. (Thank you Hughes for taking Ed with you to this gruesome scene, it’s just what he needed...) And we’ve got the military here who are just too cold and impersonal to be caring and nurturing. After Nina’s death, Roy is especially cold and blunt (and unable to show how he cares about them). Ed is only 12 here and he doesn’t get to interact with any motherly figures for a while. Riza’s in the above scene of course, but she’s very definitely a soldier. Who else do they meet in their travels? Like Ed and Al, the Tringham brother have no parents, Psyren is a fake who pretends to play motherly figures for her own selfish ends.
Tumblr media
But then we meet Maria Ross! Unlike other soldiers, she doesn’t see Ed as a powerful prodigy, she’s sees him and Al as children caught up in a mess that’s far too big for them. She takes her duty of protecting them very seriously and is able to help Ed through his despair upon finding out the secrets of the philosopher’s stone. It’s clear she goes above and beyond her job for them, for instance arguing with both Ed and Hughes about getting the boys more protection - she’s doing her best to take care of them.
Hughes talks to Maria about the brothers; he notes that she doesn’t have kids of her own and how these kids may be young but they have the State’s future in their hands. As the Elrics are too stubborn to give up on their goals, he recommends protecting them as best as the can while still enabling them. Maria takes this message to heart. She rescues Ed in the Lab 5, at great personal risk. (Edward is out of control due to absorbing alchemical energy from the red stones and she calms him down with a hug.) It’s easy to miss but Ed actually mutters ‘mom?’ before he blacks out. It might well be the first hug he’s gotten in a long time.
Now episode 24 tells this story of a pair of Ishvalan brothers whose mother died. The older brother is pretty angry and in denial about, finding it easier to believe she never loved them. Then when he’s presented with truth to the contrary, he breaks down crying, realising that she did love them, that she’d wanted to protect them but couldn’t and that she’s dead. It an interesting parallel with Ed who was also in denial about his mother’s death - not crying at her funeral but coldly declaring that they were going to bring her back. Even years later, Ed is still feeling her loss.
Tumblr media
Teacher Izumi. She trained Ed and Al after their mother died and she clearly cares deeply for them. She was very much a substitute mother to them. She’s anything but perfect though. Her methods of teaching are harsh, very harsh. She fails to convince them not to go through with human transmutation and they’ve been actively avoiding her for years. They do know she cares about them, but they’re also scared of her.
Izumi desperately wants to be a mother but her only child was stillborn and in her anger and despair, Izumi commits human transmutation. The creature she creates appears to be an abomination so she gives the child to the Gate. Upon Wrath’s introduction though, we see her caring, gentle side. But yet again, she decides Wrath is a monster and very nearly tries to kill him again. Wrath is angry and confused and finds a replacement mother figure in Sloth. Sloth is of course, the homunculus created by Ed and Al, which is fitting given that Wrath wants to steal Ed’s life.
Tumblr media
Sloth completely rejects the idea of being a mother. She’s cold and apathetic. She hates the fact that she’s a homunculus with a false identity thrust upon her. She hates Ed and Al for creating her and wants to kill them to prove once and for all that she is not Trisha Elric. From there she can embrace who she actually is. Sloth was created from Ed’s inability to get over his mother’s death and she helps him to realise that Trisha is indeed gone for good, that Sloth can never be what he may have secretly wished her to be. Ed ultimately defeats her; Sloth demanded nothing less from them.
Tumblr media
Rose. She didn’t choose to be a mother. Ironically the people of Lior call her the Holy Mother and she became a symbol to them. She’s a strong person, horrifically violated but she moves on anyway, past the travesties inflicted on her. In the end, we see her living with Al and Winry in Risembool, raising her son. It’s a hopeful end.
Tumblr media
And finally, our main villain. She had a son long ago and when he died, Envy was created. She’s created other homunculi too and they follow her. But she’s a selfish person who manipulates the homunculi into following her whims, and her goal is to be young and beautiful forever, without regard for others. She could’ve been like a mother to the homunculi, naming them, taking care of them but she rejects this role. She frequently reminds the homunculi that they are not human, they don’t have proper feelings and, yes, she even tells Wrath that homunculi do not have mothers. Envy might be considered her son and he’s an angry hate-filled person who somehow still appears to care about others more than she does. She considers herself above the homunculi and above other mere humans. It is fitting then, that she dies to her own creation, Gluttony, who had lost all ability to care thanks to her.
--------------------------------
So there we have it. FMA 03 has good mothers, dead mothers, kids without mothers, motherly figures, people who want to be good mothers, people who are forced into being mothers, people who reject the idea of being mothers. It’s all so very interesting in a story about two brothers who are really only children struggling to grow up and get over the death of their mother. I love all the different variants the show presents us with. None of these characters are perfect people, and pretty much all of them are in some way relateable.

theyll find out like tonight
woahh totally forgot ross tells them
well being in the military, he knows the risks
especially when he continued to research when bradley told them to stop
altho its extra sus that bradley told them to stop
gracia slay
cant believe they did this ross
shes literally just minding her business
so when lust is in disguise she gotta cover up her cleavage lmao
ep 17
huh was there only one shot
i thought there were two
how the hell did they fake it
is the investigator in on it
i mean they are refusing other evidence
cold flame wow amazing
if ross went to her parents then im pretty sure other people saw her there
well the homunculi are keeping tabs so they probs chose someone who wasnt in central

oooh riza thinking mustangs dead
when they go crazy bcs they think ure dead >>>
they rlly had to have an ab ahot

FMA Brotherhood: Episodes 17-18
FMA Brotherhood Episode 17: "Cold Flame"
Ross, accused of Hughes' assassination, is placed under military police custody and interrogated by Douglas. After reading a newspaper article about Ross's detention, Barry the Chopper leaves the safe house and launches a solo raid on the jail. Barry releases Ross from jail as well as Ling who promises to help them both. Barry tells Ross that she needs to leave Central immediately or risk being killed. Edward and Alphonse run into the trio, and Barry holds the brothers off to allow Ross time to escape. Ross then runs into Mustang, who seemingly kills her in with a massive fireball. Edward accosts Mustang after seeing a charred body, but Mustang coldly reminds Edward of his place as a soldier of the state military. Later, Armstrong shows up and declares that Edward should return to Resembool to have his automail arm fixed, dragging the confused Edward away.
We open with Ross' interrogation. She apparently uses the same caliber as the bullet that killed Hughes, and conveniently, she fired one shortly before, while rescuing the Elrics at the Fifth Laboratory. That's sort of a clever detail, but it's so specific I feel it loops back around to contrived. There's no way the villains could have planned this all out.
DOUGLAS: I'd like to say it was a good shot, but it was at point-blank range. Close enough that even a woman could have done it.
Truly, this show is God's gift to feminism. (This is especially absurd when Riza is supposedly renowned for her sniping abilities.)
Douglas says there were witnesses seeing her leave the site of Hughes' murder, so Envy was smart enough to turn back, unless they made this up completely. Ross' alibi is apparently that she was at her parents' house that day, which of course leaves her with no acceptable corroborating witnesses.
Armstrong is still bandaged from his wound battling Dolcetto. That's a nice detail.
Brosh says he corroborated Ross' story, but he was ignored. Seems like a dumb move on Bradley's part. Say he was colluding with her and kill him too! Weren't they both working under Hughes? It should be easy to cook up a motive for both of them.
Winry notes that Al's armor has scratches. Al shrugs it off, but I'd be pretty concerned about that. Armor doesn't heal, and Ed's stated that using alchemy to repair him is risky.
Ed is sulking. For once we actually get a scene with comparable length of pauses as OG, and unsurprisingly it's effective.
Winry says she's scared they'll die and wishes they'd give up on trying to get their bodies back. Because this is Brotherhood and not OG, this goes nowhere and is instead followed by some silly ship-teasing from Al.
...And then we get more time with our lulzy serial killer. Falman not only turns his back on him but leans down to get the newspaper while, I again feel the need to point out, Barry is totally unrestrained, and Barry just sits there because he's such a nice serial killer.
Ed sees Ross has been found as the culprit and immediately rushes to Mustang's office. Al wants to tell Winry, and Ed decides they can tell her later, because girls don't get to be in the loop.
We cut to Ling in jail. He's apparently 15, so they're totally down with imprisoning children. I'm surprised he doesn't say he's a prince.
Barry shows up to jailbreak Ross and suddenly guns don't work on him because what is consistency. Also THEY GAVE HIM WEAPONS because they're very trusting of serial killers, apparently. But it's okay, they told Barry not to kill anyone so he doesn't, because serial killers are such nice and honorable people.
Cartoon when the guards run from Barry.
Barry frees Ling when he hears he's from Xing. I don't know why, I guess it's explained later.
Cartoon when Ross objects to having to escape with a lecherous serial killer. So funny!
And urgh Barry crushes on her when she displays "spunk". Urrrggghhhhh
Ross' party runs into the Elrics, but Barry tells her to run into another alley where she encounters… Mustang! He charbroils her. Ed is horrified and has a falling-out with him.
The doctor identifies the body as Ross from dental records… then says what a shame it is such beauty was ruined, because he's a creep. Why, show.
We cut to the homunculi and discover the plan was apparently for him to… not kill her? What was the plan, then? They don't even seem to be in agreement, because Envy thinks this was a good outcome.
Then Armstrong shows up and drags Ed to Resembool under Mustang's orders. My first thought is Envy, but no, that would be too competent. Afterwards, Mustang ominously muses that everyone is out of the way.
Envy returns with intel. Why is he suddenly good at infiltration? Why does he need to infiltrate at all when, again, they run the government and can interrogate anyone they want?
But wow! What a shocking plot twist! Maybe I was wrong about Brotherhood after all! Major characters are getting killed! Mustang is a flawed, morally gray character! What are going to be the consequences of this? It's so exciting! All Brotherhood has to do now is not screw this up!
FMA Brotherhood Episode 18: "The Arrogant Palm of a Small Human"
Edward and Armstrong arrive in Resembool where they meet Heymans Breda, who takes them to the Xerxes ruins. Once there, they discover that Ross is still alive, and that Mustang faked her death in order to draw out those responsible for Hughes' murder. After the brief reunion, Ross decides to hide out in Xing with Fu, but promises to return if she is ever needed. After Ross' departure, Edward explores the ruins, finding a damaged transmutation circle. He also encounters a group of Ishbalan refugees, who reveal that it was Scar who killed Winry's parents while they gave medical aid to the Ishbalan during the civil war. Meanwhile, Barry's human body, which is now nothing more than a crazed animal, attacks Falman and Barry back in Central. However, with the assistance of Jean Havoc and the sniper Hawkeye, they manage to subdue Barry's body. Suddenly, Hawkeye is attacked by Gluttony.
So of course it screws it up.
Back at Central Winry and Al whine about how they're being kept from the plot. Ling shows up to explain everything and there is comedy as they freak out at someone who just tried to kill them sneaking into their home. Hilarious.
Everyone wears cloaks in the desert, which is a nice detail.
We learn the story of the Eastern/Western Sage. It's an interesting concept, but the phrasing is very weird. I get the impression the idea is supposed to be that they're the same guy whose teachings spread in both directions, but the way it's phrased – that this one guy specifically traveled in a direction – makes it sound like he went to one country and then doubled back to the other one.
In the Mystery Reveal Flashback, Mustang panics and hangs up when Barry calls his office, and continues it from the outside phone booth. Again, I have to wonder just what level their tapping technology is at. Even if they're only tapping Mustang's own phone, what we see of the call is extremely suspicious, and Barry is easily identifiable by his voice.
Barry corroborates Ross' innocence, because serial killers are such nice people?
Then Mustang makes a fake body and NO. NO. THIS IS STUPID. THE PREMISE OF THE STORY IS THAT HUMAN TRANSMUTATION IS IMPOSSIBLE. Okay, so it's fine as long as you're not trying to create life? Except in every resurrection attempt we see, the bodies themselves are put together wrong! If it's so easy to make a fake body, then why can't the Elrics heal themselves with normal alchemy? Why can't Ed just make a fake body and bind Al's soul to that? Why is human transmutation such a big deal in the first place? This entire twist is the author screaming SCREW YOU FOR THINKING MY MAGIC SYSTEM MAKES SENSE. There is no way the viewer could have predicted this. It is stupid and contrived on so many levels.
Breda explicitly brings up the dental records. Mustang says he's handled it but does not say how because that's how you write a mystery right?
We then redo the confrontation scene and see that Mustang did in fact make a perfectly intact body to start with, then charbroiled it in an explosion that could be seen from across the block but which somehow left both of them unharmed because convection doesn't exist.
ALSO
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MUSTANG IS IN DIFFERENT POSITIONS IN EACH EPISODE
THIS WAS NOT FORESHADOWED, THIS IS CHEATING
Tumblr media
Ling apparently told Fu to escort Ross to Xing. Why…? He has no reason to get involved in any of this.
Ed actually says Mustang was right for not telling him, because Ed wouldn't have believed him. No, Ed, Mustang was being a dick.
We cut back to Ling and learn he only helped to learn the secret of soul-binding. Barry told him he doesn't know so he should ask Al. Didn't we just have a plotline about this?
Back to Ed, who waffles about how mysterious and dangerous the plot is becoming but he's going to be DETERMINED and protect people. This was not necessary.
Ross gets put on a bus and offers to come back if she's needed. This will not happen until the finale.
Fu says Xing is "tolerant of others". Uh, sure. It also has an abundance of food and everything is great. You know, this sure does trivialize this plot about the evils of government when there's a perfect utopia just next door.
We discover that Mustang's phone calls to his sweetheart are actually coded messages to his team. They are not terribly subtle. Like, they're cocking guns while in earshot. If anyone's tapping those calls, they should know he's up to something.
Then there's some convoluted plot about Barry's original body coming after him because this plot definitely needed more actors in it.
Havoc does not land a single shot on a dude in the same room as him despite going through an entire clip.
Barry's body is somehow strong enough to rip the armor's arm off. He continues to dodge bullets until Riza snipes him. I guess the show has decided there is going to be exactly one character who can use guns properly.
Why did they leave Ed alone if they knew Ishbalans were here?
But it's okay because the Ishbalans recognize he's One of The Good Ones, because otherwise dynamics of privilege and oppression might negatively affect our heroes and we can't have that. No, all you need to do is talk loudly about it while never depicting how it actually looks in real life and you can just rake in the Woke Points.
Seriously, it's so textbook. They ~realize not all Amestrians are bad~ because this kid knew one good Amestrian. Never mind that Winry's parents were obvious exceptions and they have very good reason to fear Amestrians when their whole culture worships the military. Everything revolves around the hero.
We learn Winry's parents were killed by Scar. We will later learn that this was an accident that had nothing to do with the actual political situation, because in Brotherhood people are not allowed to make real mistakes.
Barry wants to kill his own body because…?
We see that Barry's body is rotting. So how is it tearing armor apart and dodging bullets?
We end with Gluttony attacking Riza.
Conclusion
This is the first nail in the coffin. Here we begin the pattern of storytelling that will characterize Brotherhood's entire plot: SHOCKING TWIST lol j/k everything's fine. I despise this. It shows brazen contempt for the audience, treating them like goldfish who won't keep watching if you can't give them a constant adrenaline high, while lacking the courage to commit to anything truly daring. It doesn't even work after the first few times! Once you establish you don't have the guts to actually kill anyone, we no longer care. Even if you eventually do decide this time it's for real, our emotional reaction will be completely shot and we'll never be certain if you're going to undo it at a moment's notice. It's nothing but a cheap, pathetic trick, the standby of mediocre authors having to crank out a chapter a month while desperately staving off cancellation.
And okay, maybe that would still be enjoyable to me, maybe, if I actually liked the characters involved. But no. Ed gets shoved into a bland, expository B-plot and Al doesn't even get that. Instead we have to watch MUSTANG THE MOST SPECIALEST be very special and important. I signed up for this show because I liked the protagonists. Why are you making me watch a show that's no longer about them? That's really it, isn't it – this is going back on everything the series hooked the audience with originally (in the manga, at least). Ed is a chump, alchemy is magic, the villains are incompetent. I don't see how you could still be invested at this point if you were at all interested in the opening.
Token good point: I do like the Xerxes bits, because I'm a weirdo who cares about silly things like plot and characters. They're good exposition that effectively build the mystery, and some good character moments too. I hate what the answers turn out to be, but as a setup it's perfectly fine.
Like with episode 15, I'd be well within my rights to nope out at this point. But how could I do that, knowing the show has even more rope to hang itself with? Let's see where this travesty ends!

One Little Flinch
Heyyyy all! I’ve had this idea on the brain for a good long while, and with parentalfma week coming up, I saw the perfect opportunity!! So, written for @parentalfmaweek 2018, Day 6: Closure!
Summary: Some careless actions on Roy’s part ten years ago come back to haunt him. Based off FMAB Episode 17
Parental!RoyEd--Grandparental!RoyaiEdwinbabies (sort of)
Words: 2043
Warnings: Past implied violence, nothing graphic
Roy genuinely enjoyed it when the Elrics came to Central for a visit. He generally, really, and actually enjoyed it. He and Riza (especially Riza) got along well with Winry, Alphonse always had great stories from his travels, their kids adored everyone on the team and loved distracting them to hear stories (they spent a lot of time on Breda’s lap, as he was the best storyteller on the team), and once Roy was no longer Ed’s commanding officer, he and Ed got along rather splendidly.
Oh, sure, there were days when Ed simply couldn’t stand Roy’s voice, and days where Roy’s migraines were acting up, and Ed’s rambunctiousness made them even worse, and sometimes they argued as if Ed was still the Fullmetal Alchemist. But also, Roy was no longer the authority figure that Ed was determined to act out against, and domestic life had calmed down all that energy he used to have, and he’d taken after Maes and just loved showing off his kids and wife. The camera always on his hand or around his neck was proof of that.
It wasn’t a headache when Ed stopped in anymore, it was actually pleasant. Roy could even admit to himself, back in the recesses of his mind, that there were days he wished Ed and Al were his own. Days that he imagined that, in a way, they were. Their kids, five-year-old Thom, four-year-old Sarah, and one-year-old Trisha were constantly switching between calling him Uncle Roy, and Grandpa, and most days he was floating somewhere between “a thirty-seven-year-old man should be no grandfather” and “everyone look at my grandbabies!!”
Ed chattered happily, telling Roy some fantastical story that had to do with poor Thom somehow getting his entire head stuck in the banister at home. Ed gestured with huge hand movements, the muscles of his right arm working and moving as if they hadn’t spent months recovering from atrophy. He moved emphatically, talking louder and louder because apparently this story was too good to be done otherwise.
There was a point where Roy had to reach up and rub his eye—one could hardly blame him, as the Elric kids had insisted on shacking up in his home last night so they could have a “slumber party with grandpa!!!!”, and he had been up for hours talking alchemy with Ed. The kids were running him ragged, he had hardly gotten any sleep last night, and he was tired.
He just, perhaps, moved a little bit too fast.
Ed, much to Roy’s own horror, flinched at the movement of his hand. He flinched hard.
Ed didn’t even seem to notice. He didn’t notice Roy’s hand moving up, he didn’t notice Roy’s abrupt freeze after Ed flinched, just kept talking talking talking about his amazing kids.
But Roy noticed. Oh, Roy had noticed.
And he knew, deep in his heart, that that one foolish action in an alleyway nearly ten years ago was going to come back to haunt him.
He wouldn’t say that it had been an accident, way back then, because really it hadn’t been. He’d been caught in a mix of swirling emotions, at the loss of his best friend, at the sharp and immediate desire for revenge, the sharp and hurting anger that Ed was going to walk into the scene and mess everything up…
But Ed had kept yelling. Things like “and why didn’t you say anything?!. And he had gotten madder and madder and yes technically he had just killed someone but why, why did Ed have to be so fucking naive, why couldn’t he understand that Ross wasn’t dead and that he needed to get back he was going to ruin everything.
It had happened before Roy had known it. One minute, Ed’s hands were twisted in his collar, yanking their faces close so he could continue yelling, to try and understand.
The next minute, Roy’s fist was swung to the far side, his knuckles were stinging, and Ed was thrown to the ground with a throbbing mark on his cheek going swiftly red.
He had punched him.
Across the face.
A fifteen-year-old boy. The same one who Roy now, and maybe even a little bit back then, thought of like a son.
You heartless bastard.
This wasn’t the first thing he’d done wrong in his life, and it certainly wasn’t the worst thing he’d ever done. But there was still such a strong bite of disgust, that he had caused Ed to hurt, that he had let his emotion get to him and had thrown him to the ground as if he were trash. He was horrified with himself, disgusted with himself.
He scared himself.
He was almost afraid of being alone around the Elric children. Afraid that one day, one of them would tick him off just enough, and he’d throw one of the little ones, these little ones he really absolutely adored, to the ground as if they were nothing, he’d hurt them, break them, kill them.
Hurt them, just like he had hurt their father no more than ten years ago.
But, Ed didn’t even seem to notice. He didn’t even seem to remember.
Honestly, Roy wouldn’t have been surprised if Ed didn’t remember. Roy knew that Ed suffered PTSD like no one’s business, had known it since not long after Ed joined the military when he had a panic attack in the middle of the mess. He was constantly flinching at things, shying from hurt, skirting around topics that would make a grown man panic from the mere thought. Winry had once called, saying that Ed was suffering from them more and she didn’t know what to do. As far as reactions go, this was extremely mild. It was almost a relief. And yet….
Yet, Roy was still in that category of “things that Edward Elric shied away from”. Whether he was at the bottom of the list or the top didn’t matter. That he was on the list at all was inexcusable.
Ed didn’t notice Roy’s hesitation. He had jumped headlong into another story about Thom attempting to teach Trisha how to talk ages ago, not noticing his ex-superior’s shame and humiliation.
Again, just as he had before, Roy acted without realizing it. This time, it was with a far gentler hand, one that shook weakly with the desire to express apologies his mouth just couldn’t say. He reached his nervous hand forward, nestling it softly on the top of Ed’s head.
Ed finally stopped talking, surprise flickering in his golden gaze. He stopped and stared at Roy, only for a moment.
As Ed fell silent, Roy’s hand dropped a little to cup the base of his braid. His thumb ran over soft golden strands, as if soothing a hurt that Ed no longer felt.
“...Colonel?”
I don’t deserve you.
Roy didn’t correct Ed for once, didn’t speak even a word. He knew that, similarly as lieutenant was with Hawkeye, the rank of ‘colonel’ was practically synonymous with ‘friend’, or even better yet, Dad. He knew that if Ed ever called him General, then Ed was royally pissed off at something. He’d become so used to Roy’s old rank that it had become synonymous with bastard which, in turn, was in a way synonymous with dad.
Roy tugged gently, and Ed hadn’t been expecting it, so he stumbled and went along with it. He stared blankly at Roy’s shirt when Ed found his forehead pressing against Roy’s uniform.
I’m so sorry.
Even though Ed didn’t hear him say anything, all he had to do was look up at him, see the ceaseless remorse in his eyes, and know, or at least have an idea, what Roy was trying to do.
“...It’s okay,” he mumbled under his breath, trying unsuccessfully to work his way out of the half-embrace. “I’m fine, and it’s okay.” And he meant it. It really was okay, and Roy knew it was okay. Roy knew that Ed didn’t really care about one little punch in the middle of an emotional night. That didn’t make what Roy had done right. Not at all. He was supposed to protect Edward, protect all the Elrics, but all he’d done was bring him pain.
What sort of person, what sort of almost-father, did that to his almost-son?
Rather than respond, Roy drew his other arm around Ed, embracing him fully as if that could express his sorrow even more.
Ed hitched a quiet breath as he was scootched closer, then sighed and planted his face in Roy’s uniform coat. At least, he figured, it was warm here. He lifted his arms and put them around Roy, hugging back. Neither he nor Roy were much for hugging, and both were fully aware of that. But this time… this was different.
“It’s okay now, colonel,” Ed said softly. “I know you’d never hurt my kids or Winry, or me or Al unless we’re sparring—“ which didn’t happen often, but Ed claimed that Roy “needed to stay in shape” and fighting a physical combatant with and without alchemy was the best way to do it. “I trust you with them. And if even I trust you with them—“ knowing all my trust issues, knowing how hard it is for me to trust anyone but a few with my family, went without saying, but Roy heard it all the same— “then maybe you should lighten up on yourself. Seriously. It was ten years ago, and I’m pretty sure I deserved it. I normally did when you yelled at me.”
Roy sighed pitifully and lifted his chin to plant it in Ed’s hair. Not an easy feat, considering Ed had actually grown in so many years and was nearly taller (taller!) than Roy was.
“No,” he said softly, gentle affection for the young man he loved like a son dancing about in his eyes. Really, trying to make Roy feel better when all Roy had done for him was bring him grief. Really. “You may have deserved to get yelled at, but you never deserved to get punched. Not… not then. I should have kept my head better, and you got hurt because of it, and I'm sorry.”
Ed sighed and slumped forward, forehead planting to his shoulder. He had not been prepared for this type and this level of emotions today.
Trust Mustang to ruin the fun.
“Moron.”
Dad.
“You might have been…. Might have been stupid about it, but you stayed. And that’s more than a lot of people can say.”
“Staying is hardly—”
“You stayed,” Ed snapped over his interruption, just about lifting his forehead to smack it against Roy’s shoulder in punishment. “And that’s enough. So shut up, bastard. Apology accepted.”
Bonus:
“Mommy,” Thom said, peeking into the doorway to the general’s office. “What are Daddy and Grandpa doing?”
Sarah peeked around Thom into the office, eyebrows bunching up when she saw that her daddy was standing in her grandpa’s arms.
Mommy glanced away from Grandma just in time to see that they were apparently about to interrupt a moment between Daddy and Grandpa. She grabbed Sarah’s arm and hauled her back, then called Thom back to her side. Grandma hooked her heel around Sarah to pull her back a little further, holding baby Trisha to her side.
“It looks like Daddy and Grandpa are having a good talk, Thom,” said Mommy softly, messing up his tawny hair. “Why don’t we leave them alone for a little bit.”
“I wanna talk with grandpa!” Sarah cheered. She wanted to talk especially if it meant getting big grandpa hugs like that.
“You can talk after Daddy is finished,” said Mommy, steering them away. “For now, maybe we should go see if we can find Uncle Heymans, don’t you think? I bet he has some fun new stories to tell.”
Sarah looked up at Trisha and Grandma, smiling a big smile when Grandma extended her hand down to her. “Okay! Uncle Heymans has the best stories!” she reported cheerfully, taking Grandma’s hand and happily letting her steer her away.
Thom skipped a step and seized Mommy’s hand, forgetting about the scene behind them, even as Grandpa lifted his chin to nestle it on Daddy’s head. “Yeah!!”
