maybe all you guys already learned this right when the episode came out, but TIL that Ross Perot was a real human man who ran as a third-party candidate in 1992 against Bill Clinton and incumbent George H. W. Bush, losing to Clinton. Since he won re-election in 1996 in the Smiling Friends timeline, we can probably assume he replaced Clinton as president entirely in their world. I find this really, really, really funny.
The guy who Charlie mentions won in a landslide in 1980, Shrimpo Jones, sadly is not a real human man in our timeline. He is probably a shrimp. The landslide victor in our world during 1980 was Ronald Reagan.
#smiling friends#replacing ronald reagan with a shrimp is funny but replacing bill clinton with a real third-party candidate is even funnier#to me#because like. of course smiling friends world had a shrimp president. but WHO would have EVER guessed they had a ross perot president?#ross perot

I think Gore is cute. Steven thinks he's gay.
October 13, 1992 Tuesday
How easily we lose track of our day’s #s. #s are arbitrary anyway.
It’s HOT . Endless heat is giving way to nearly unpleasantly cool evenings. Fall can no longer hide her aging face neath sunshine wrap. The truth shows round the edges. But , the masquerade of summer is a galant try. Like some older woman wearing a younger woman’s clothing. Acting like a younger woman. It’s just not right. And so we speak of this warm weather. Not right.
Quale, Gore and Vice Admiral Stockdale Vice Presidential debated today. My God, a bunch of goofs. Gore came off the best, but too polished, too uptight. Perot’s VP (Stockade) was pathetic. His hearing aid didn’t work right so he didn’t hear a few of the questions. He fumbled. Why did they do that to the poor man? Quite cruel.I think Clinton will win. All Quale asked was “Can you trust him?” (Clinton). Well, can you trust Bush? I think that Gore is cute. Steven thinks he’s gay.
End of entry
Notes: 8/20/2024.

Any third-party candidate in a post 1900 presidential contest who could have made a decent or average, if unspectacular, President of the USA?
Former President Theodore Roosevelt was a third-party candidate in 1912 against incumbent Republican President Taft and Democratic nominee (and eventual winner) Woodrow Wilson, so I think he's an obvious pick. Other than that, most of the major third-party candidates wouldn't have been great choices because they were racist protest nominees like Strom Thurmond or George Wallace. Ross Perot doesn't deserve to be compared with Thurmond or Wallace, but I don't think he would have been any good as President. Maybe Robert M. La Follette Sr., who did fairly well as a third-party challenger to President Coolidge and Democratic nominee John W. Davis in 1924?

"Why Conservatives Hate Immigrants"
Leeja Miller covers a lot of ground in 29 minutes. Worth a watch, even if it doesn't get into the realignment of major party immigration politics thirty years ago as the GOP openly played for Ross Perot voters.

Two-Party System
Fandango’s Provocative Question # 229 If you are American, have you ever voted for a presidential candidate who was neither the Democratic or Republican candidate? Would you like to see more third-party candidates and a movement away from predominantly a two-party system? Fandango posed a good question. Sad to say without giving my age, that in my lifetime that I’ve only seen a presidential…
