My current, loose and not that interesting goal for this year is to really work on the books I have current access to right now... at the start of this year. Because it's a lot XD This means books currently favorite in Scribd, on my StoryGraph 'to read' pile, or a book I currently own on my shelves. Main goal is at least one of these a month.
For my own personal reference, I'm putting a list of such books below to hold myself accountable.
Edit: Now the end of 2023, and here's a breakdown of my goal to read books I already had access to at the start of 2023:
I didn't read one a month per se, but I got more than 12 done, so I call this a win. These books are:
-Can't Spell Treason Without Tea - Rebecca Thorn -The City Beautiful - Aden Polydoros -Finn Mac Cool - Morgan Llewlyn -The First Sister by Linden A Lewis (proceeded by the other two in the series) -Get a Life, Chloe Brown - Talia Hibbert -The Glass Castle - Jeannette Walls -Haunted Wisconsin - Michael Norman & Beth Scott -Her Majesty's Royal Coven - Juno Dawson -I Await the Devil's Coming - Mary McClane -The Kraken's Sacrifice - Katee Robert -Lavinia - Ursula K Le Guin -Love Her or Lose Her - Tessa Bailey -Mistress of the Art of Death - Ariana Franklin -Nevada - Imogen Binnie -The Prince - Niccolo Machiavelli -Rosemary and Rue - Seanan McGuire -The Ruins - Scott Smith -The Song of Achilles - Madeline Miller -Sarah - J.T. LeRoy -Vampire Forensics - Mark Collins Jenkins -What Happened to You? - Oprah Winfrey -The Witch King - H. E. Edgmon -The Woman in White - Wilkie Collins
The books I did not get around to reading from this list are as follows: Black Water Sister by Zen Cho; Blood Scion by Deborah Falaye (o); The Book of M by Peng Shepard (o); Charity and Sylvia by Rachel Hope Cleves (o); The Cruel Prince by Holly Black (a); The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey (s); Fallen by Lauren Kate (o); Fanny Hill by John Cleland (o); Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender (s); The Glass Woman by Caroline Lea (s); The Great Hunger by Cecil Woodham-Smith (o); Helping Her Get Free by Susan Brewster (o); The Impossible Girl by Lydia Kang (s); Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold (o); The Merry Spinster by Daniel Lavery (o); On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong (o); The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang (s); Radiance by Grace Draven (a); Watching the Tree by Adeline Yen Mah (o); The Willows by Algernon Blackwood (s); Wings of Fire (o); Witches Steeped in Gold by Clannon Smart (o); The Wolf and the Woodsman by Ava Reid (s)
23/46 Whoa! That's exactly 50% of the books I had on my list! That's pretty cool! All in all, I consider this 2023 goal successfully done!

My hand is feeling much better now, so I thought I'd post a sketch dump. Most of these were drawn long before my injury, but a few of them were exercises in working my thumb out. :) enjoy!

Birds of a Feather
The Heart of Ether/Mabel crossover. Rose and Mabel meet again and catch up.
on AO3
This revel was proving to be quite an annoyance.
Don’t get her wrong; Rosemary Quinn knew well enough the delights of revels, the bountiful pleasures they could provide that nothing above the ground could hope to match. But revels always ended up being an end unto themselves, and when you had another end to focus on, another goal that needed achieving, getting stuck in the middle of a revel was merely a hindrance to that goal, any enjoyment to be offered there very much beside the point.
Rose didn’t even know what the event that had triggered this particular revel was, but whatever the cause, it made finding her path, seeking out those she hoped to see more than anything, all the more difficult as she stumbled through the fanciful crowds around her.
After some time (minutes, hours, days--it was impossible to know down here), Rose finally spotted a familiar face, and while it wasn’t the one she really longed to see, she made a beeline for its owner just the same. Allies were valuable down here, as were true friends, and Rose was pretty sure that the woman she was approaching counted as at least one of the two.
“Mabel?”
Mabel’s head turned towards Rose upon her speaking, and Rose could see that Mabel looked in better spirits than the last time they had met. Her outfit was nicer, too, covered in the finest fabrics that the Underhill had to offer. Rose knew too well, though, that a gilded cage was still just a cage.
“Rose?”
“I have to admit, I had hoped not to see you here. Not because I don’t want to see you, of course, it’s always a pleasure! I just... wish you had gotten your chance to leave.”
“I did get that chance.” Before Rose could ask for clarification, Mabel pressed on. “I left, though I had not asked to return to the world above, had not expected such a rescue after all these years. But then I found...” Mabel’s eyes wandered away from Rose to another reveler nearby, an equally finely-dressed woman. “...a reason to return to my former prison. If I remain trapped now, it is a trapping of my own choosing, and that is what matters most of all.”
Rose nodded. “And what reason is that?”
“Have you not heard?”
“Heard what?”
“...do you not even know what it is that we’re celebrating here?” Mabel let out a laugh, and though there was a sharpness to it--as Rose knew was common enough for Mabel, even in levity--it did not sound bitter or solemn in the slightest.
“I can’t say that I do, no.”
“Hell is under new management.” Mabel’s smile was wide, toothy; it put Rose in mind of a wild animal baring its teeth upon conquering a foe. “The Underhill has a new King, and I am her consort.”
“Who-”
Before Rose could even finish her question, Mabel grabbed the hand of the reveler that had caught her eye before, brought the stranger to her side. Now that Rose was looking more closely, she could see the crown of dark feathers upon the stranger’s head, the bold hues of gold and crimson and black that marked her as no mere passerby.
“Rosemary Quinn, I introduce you to the ruler of this place, King Anna Limon. Anna, I introduce you to my old friend Rose.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you.” Anna said, extending a hand in Rose’s direction.
“The pleasure is all mine, Your Majesty.” Rose did her best attempt at a curtsey, which wasn’t stellar, before returning the handshake, careful to keep her grip firm but not overpowering. Anna’s hand was thin and sharp, but only after they broke their grip on one another did Rose spot the reason why--Anna’s hand had no skin, no muscle, none of the sinews that should be holding it together, only bare bone.
“No need for formalities. Please, just call me Anna.”
“If you say so, Anna.”
“I do. I’ve had quite enough of formalities for tonight, I assure you.”
Rose offered up a tentative grin and took in the image of the Underhill’s new King. Anna Limon had thick curly hair, almost as dark as the feathers that lay atop it, deep brown eyes... and most importantly, apart from the hand made of bone, she looked to be utterly human.
(Rose knew that appearances could be deceiving, of course, but in her experience, revels weren’t generally the sort of event where the participants would try to appear more human than they actually were.)
Anna and Mabel grabbed one another’s hands, and the smiles on their faces were wide and true.
“So how did you two meet? What story is there behind all of this--your union, your coronation...?”
Anna and Mabel locked eyes, both looking as thought they were trying to stifle a laugh.
“It’s a funny story, really...”

𝐓𝐀𝐒𝐊 𝟎𝟎𝟏 . 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐑𝐎𝐆𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 .
𝐋𝐎𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 : hemlock police station . 𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄 : december 16 , 2019 . 𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐄𝐃 : @voidgriff @heartofgolds @paintingpeyton @covingtonhqs
just about everything got on lot’s nerves . everyone who knew him knew that there was only a few things here and there that truly brought him happiness . and to be honest , sticking around hemlock for the holidays to be investigated was not one of those things . as lot sat in the lobby of the hemlock police station , he picked at scabs that adorned his knuckles and twirled his ratty hair in his fingertips . his gaze snapped from the clerk at the front desk to the barren christmas tree that someone had haphazardly thrown up to liven up the place . in fact , when lot listened close enough , there was even instrumental holiday tunes playing over an invisible , static infused sound system . the combination of the click clacking of keyboards , the yellowy lights adorning the small tree , and the familiarity of the music should have calmed him . however , it was really hard for all of those things to drown out the steady , quick thumping in lot’s chest , the florescent lighting overhead , and the clerk’s narrowed gaze whenever she caught him looking at her .
eventually , someone had stepped out into the lobby to retrieve him . judging by the obnoxious badge , it was likely the chief of police . lot eyed the badge for just a moment before cocking his brow and following behind the large man back into the belly of the beast . the further lot descended into the police station , the further he felt from the entire world of hemlock outside . part of him liked the disconnect , never fitting in quite right in the strange town . but the majority of him hated it , knowing that he would have to talk about the girl that he cared a whole lot about in front of a couple strangers . lot had never been very good at containing his tears when pressed about something or someone close to his heart . that fact worried him more than anything ; the potential of crying in front of people he barely knew .
upon entering the investigation room , the private investigator was both everything and nothing like what lot had expected . he almost looked too fitting for the job , like a private investigator in some kid’s movie . whatever the case , lot half smiled , introduced himself , and shook hands with victor watson , private investigator . “ now , your name is actually lancelot kang, correct ? ” the police chief’s voice cut through the air, grabbing the boy’s attention . his dark eyes shot up to the officer , his brows furrowing just slightly before a nod caused his head to dip slowly . “ yeah , lancelot kang . nobody calls me that , though . i prefer lot , ” he explained , settling into the seat across from the two men . victor watson nodded to himself , scribbling something on the page in front of him . “ well , lot … let’s get started , shall we ? ”
“ can you tell me , to the best of your memory , what happened on the night of december 13 , 2019 ? ”
lot nodded with a determined look on his visage , but his fingers continued to pick at his knuckles beneath the table . “ yeah , so … i don’t have a car , so i got to the covington estate on my skateboard around 9:30 that night . i have a couple friends on the debate team , so i figured i would go and congratulate them on the win . i was supposed to meet up with my best friend , griffin beck , as soon as i got there . which i did ! and i actually spent most of the night with her . i slipped away from griffin at one point to go congratulate peyton underhill on the win . i talked to her for a little bit and i talked to a couple of the other debate team members before i went to go find griffin again . she and i aren’t exactly known for our charisma , so we kind of kept to ourselves most of the night . ”
“ i spent a few hours at the party , but i was over it and i just wanted to go home . i’m ... not exactly the social type . griffin seemed cool with it , so i went to go grab my skateboard where i left it , but i couldn’t find it . i think some drunk kid moved it . i looked around for a while by myself , but eventually griffin came to help . that was pretty late , though . maybe 11 o’clock ? i was gone before the fire thing even happened . that was real , right ? i heard about it , but it sounded crazy . ” lot looked between the private investigator and and the chief of police for answers , which neither seemed to want to give . with a short huff and shrug of his broad shoulders , the boy dropped the subject .
“ did you see anything unusual that night ? was anyone acting out of the ordinary ? ”
lot tried to swallow that lump in his throat before he continued on . his nimble fingers tugged at a string hanging from the end of his sweater . lot didn’t exactly frequent covington parties , but he had been to a handful ; enough to know how they typically functioned and enough to know that they were not really his scene . the debate team victory party had pulled him into the mix solely because of his connections to debate team members . but he had no idea at the time that he would be pulled this far into the mix . “ i … well , yeah . she and her friend , rosemary keegan , seemed to be in the middle of an argument when i saw them . i couldn’t really tell what it was about , so i just decided to look for my skateboard and head home . melanie and rosemary are pretty good friends as far as i know , so that was really the only thing that seemed odd . other than that , it just seemed like a regular college party to me . ” the boy felt pretty bad bringing rosemary up like that . she had always been so kind to him and he loved when she was his tour guide at the hemlock history museum . in fact , as much as he didn’t want to admit it , he basically only went to that history museum to see her .
“ now , lot … can you tell me more about your relationship with melanie ? ”
and just like that , that fucking lump in lot’s throat came back . with full force , not to mention . but now the burn at the edges of his almond eyes accompanied it . “ sure .” the single word came out strained already . fuck , fuck , fuck , fuck ! this is exactly what lot wanted to avoid ! the last thing he wanted to do was turn into some bitch baby right in front of two of the most intimidating men in hemlock . the boy inhaled a deep , calming breath before continuing . “ melanie and i met at some school event my first year . we pretty much clicked right away . she was just easy to talk to , you know ? ” there he goes . the tell tale crack in his voice followed immediately by a burning hot tear down the side of his cheek . there was no going back now . “ sorry , i … i’m good . talking about her is just really hard . um , we were basically attached at the hip after that day . we recently had a disagreement and i was … i was kind of hoping to make up with her at the party . but like i said , i never really got the chance to talk to her again .” tears were rolling freely down lot’s cheeks at that point . just knowing that he would never get to make it up to melanie caused the boy’s stomach to turn . none of it felt fair .
somewhat awkwardly , the private investigator offered up a box of tissues for lot . with a small scowl , the weepy boy took a couple and wiped his eyes almost bashfully . this weird tension is exactly what he wanted to avoid , but it was here so he may as well take some of the police department’s tissues .
“ do you have any reason to believe that someone would want to hurt melanie ? ”
almost instantly , lot shook his head . “ god , no . melanie was so bright and so interesting . she was so good at talking to people and just talking in general . we don’t really focus on sports at covington so she was like our star football player . but without the football . our star debate team captain . ” for the first time in a while , lot released a short , almost humorous chuckle . it was weak , but it was something .
“ i think that just about wraps things up for you today , mr . kang . do you have any questions about how the case will proceed ? ”
lot gazed at the crumpled tissues in his palms , a frown etched on his visage . he thought for a moment , tugging his lip into his mouth . the boy released a deep sigh before looking back up at the men with teary , bloodshot eyes . “ i don’t think so ? thank you for the , uh … tissues . good luck , guys . seriously . ” and with that , it was over . as the chief of police escorted him back out to the lobby and into the strange world of hemlock once more , the boy felt lighter . lot did what he could and that had to be enough . it had to be .

𝖙𝖆𝖘𝖐 #001 ⇢ the interrogation
mentioned: @covingtonhqs , @hauntingfm , @heartofgolds , @ofreligion , @cagcdbirds , @of-apples , @ofconstellctions
after melanie’s death, griffin sincerely figured that she’d be brought in for some sort of investigation and questioning. not only was she at the party and part of the chosen twenty two, but she had a close relationship with melanie. hell, they lived together. while she found comfort in the fact that she was familiar with the process of an investigation, she truly couldn’t get the butterflies out of her stomach. talking about melanie always tugged at the void inside of her, but there was no way in hell she was going to consciously let herself shut down. just like any other situation, griffin put on her calm and collected mask and did her damn best to keep it up. practice makes perfect.
can you tell me, to the best of your memory, what happened on the night of december 13, 2019?
“i heard about the party first from my friend wolfgang beaumont a little while after they decided to have it. he texted me like, an hour after, hold on,” griffn started to explain, but paused to grab her phone from her bag and pull up the texts. “yeah, 6:24. i texted back a typical ‘congrats! always down for a party’, made some dinner, and started getting ready. i showed up at like, 8:40. i wanted to get out of my apartment as soon as i could because michal and melanie had a fight and the vibes... just weren’t right. i felt a little awkward getting there so early, so i just helped put out some last minute drinks, talked to wolfie a little bit, and waited for some of my other friends to show up,” griffin began, nodding her head along to her final words.
“once the party got started, i just mingled around and danced, but hung out with some friends for a good amount of time. lot kang, cordelia underhill, and rosemary keegan if you need names. i was with rosemary at first, but left to get drinks once she met up with some other friends. i hung out in the kitchen for a while and talked to my friend maisie for a little, but then i ended up finding lot. we thought somebody stole his skateboard so we were wandering around try to find it for a hour basically. i left just before midnight since i was exhausted and whatever they put in the jungle juice wasn’t sitting well in my stomach. i was back in my dorm before that fire even started. i heard about it online when i woke up the next morning, honestly.”
did you see anything unusual that night? was anyone acting out of the ordinary?
“the only thing that comes to mind happened before the party. like i mentioned before, michal, my other roommate, and melanie got in a fight. i was doing my makeup in my room and suddenly they just started... yelling at each other. i had music playing so i couldn’t tell if they were talking beforehand, but it was just very sudden because they were close and never really fought,” griffin explained, taking a second to pause. “it was unusual, yeah, but i don’t think it had anything to do with what happened that night. michal would never do... that to melanie. if there was something unusual about that night that i picked up on, it had to be that. other than that, everybody else seemed fine.”
can you tell me more about your relationship with melanie?
"i mean, we were roommates. we met freshman year at orientation and she was the first friend i made at covington. we became pretty good friends after that and would hang out: study dates, movie nights, you know?” while griffin was doing a stellar job with keeping her guard up, it now started to falter. even though she wanted to remain strong when talking about melanie, those last words got caught in her throat. hot tears started to form in her eyes, but she blinked them back before they could surface. she could feel her hands start to shake and she clasped them together before setting the in her lap. “i didn’t have a great time with my freshman year roommate really and since i was the closest to mel out of anyone, i asked her. she said yeah and we lived together after that. we were really close after that, you know,” griffin added, voice faltering before taking another pause. “she was one of my best friends and this whole thing just... sucks. it’s horrible.”
do you have any reason to believe that someone would want to hurt melanie?
griffin took a second to answer this question, trying to fully collect herself after her emotional breach. “no, i really don’t think there is a logical reason that someone would do this. most everybody adored her, they really did. i mean, i know some people didn’t like melanie and had their differences with her, but i never thought it would actually make someone want to hurt her.” griffin shook her head, clearly in disbelief by the idea that someone would indeed hurt melanie.
do you have any questions about how the case will proceed?
“you probably can’t answer this, but the fire... did that have to do with any of this? other than that, no. i don’t think i have any questions. thank you though. i hope i could be of some help.”

Our #rosemary bush is currently sharing space with a random Underhill fern, while playing host to tendrils from the #sweetpotato, and even the thyme plant below has sent a runner to climb through the branches and bask smugly in the sun. And the bush is loving it; healthily leafy and covered in flowers. I wonder if it was lonely? https://www.instagram.com/p/Bv7iQOulHYD/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=197sbc01pckzv

Wow - these are so lovely! And LOL at the bottom left one - the look on Regis’ face and the little heart! Awww
My hand is feeling much better now, so I thought I'd post a sketch dump. Most of these were drawn long before my injury, but a few of them were exercises in working my thumb out. :) enjoy!

WIP 3, the smoke is a pain. Will probably keep tweaking bits of it.
I'm trying to decide if I should just continue with graphite shading or get some grey markers in there. Some workable fixative spray will be used either way (assuming it doesn't rain tomorrow and I can get it outside to spray)
WIP
Started as a sketch but sort of blossomed into self indulgent blood drinking fanart lol
