Fabulist fiction writer Lucy Corin will be visiting us to give a reading from her work on Tuesday, February 5 at 4:30pm! In anticipation, we’ve just printed this letterpress broadside of her flash story “Conjugations” from her short story collection One Hundred Apocalypses and Other Apocalypses.
Mark your calendars for this fantastic reading event, where we will debut our newest broadside. Lucy will be signing the whole stack!

Making some progress on framing a broadside from my college’s press for myself.
Glued together two 4ply mat boards to make an 8ply and then painted that beautifully thick bevel purple to match some of the ink in the broadside. The broadside is a poem by Nicky Beer, printed on that textured gray paper with an impressive deckle edge.
Tools of the trade for painting bevels on mats: gouache, a mixing tray and brush, and a quality angle brush.

My favorite place on campus is the Rose O'Neill Literary House (The Lit House)
It's a house that WAC purchased and is the official house of the English department. It's my favorite place on campus because it's a really cute, cozy house that always has books, tea, and sometimes snacks.
The Lit House hosts readings by published authors, which are really exciting events for both the campus and the community.
Some classes are even taught in the Lit House, including two of my own, so I'm able to go everyday.
It truly is a great place to be on campus, and it's my absolute favorite, and one of the reasons I first fell in love with WAC.

Looking Forward
Hello goslings! Here are the things I'm looking forward to this semester:
1. Birthday Ball
It's that time of year again, my party goslings! The theme is "Under the Stars." Since last year's BB was amazingly decorated, I'm excited to see if they can top themselves!
2. Publications
I've been sending my work out to multiple journals in hopes that one of them will get published. Nothing's certain yet, but I can feel it coming.
3. Association of Writers and Writing Programs
Cherry Tree (and the Rose O'Neill Literary House) will be attending the annual AWP in Oregon. I'm really excited since I was invited to go and help sell the literary journal. Soooooooo excited!
Until next time!

Registration is open for the 2019 @WCcherrytree Young Writers' Conference at the Rose O'Neill Literary House, which runs July 17-20!
New this year: register by April 5 for a major discount! We also have 8 full-ride merit scholarships.
Home to the famous Sophie Kerr Prize (the largest undergraduate writing prize in the country), Washington College has made a name for itself as a school for writers, a place where aspiring poets, novelists, and memoirists can study with prize-winning authors to hone their craft. At the Cherry Tree Young Writers’ Conference, rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors can experience the literary community that Washington College has to offer and discover the many opportunities available to undergraduates: internships and funding grants in publishing, writing, and editing; a host of student-run publications; and the chance to serve as editorial screeners on Cherry Tree, Washington College’s national literary journal. At the Young Writers’ Conference, students can take intensive creative writing workshops in a choice of three genres (poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction). They can discuss literature at the college level with current English department faculty. They can attend professional readings at the Rose O’Neill Literary House. They can even take a class in how to draft effective college admissions statements.

I was lucky enough to spend some of my weekend as a guest alumni speaker at my old stomping grounds, the Rose O'Neill Literary House at Washington College.  The Lit House is the cozy little campus spot where I did a lot of homework, met some amazing authors, and learned to play chess and develop a taste for tea.
It felt good to be back.

Here is Amy Hempel signing the full stack of broadsides! Proceeds from all broadsides purchased at the reading this evening will be donated to the Deja Foundation, which rescues dogs from high-kill shelters and finds them new homes.
