Moon, sun, and my favorite card death!
Rook Tarot Card Ask Game -
The Moon: How does Rook's past impact their values? Does their past come with any biases or blind spots they have to account for?
Oooh, Vio's Crow training 100% created within him the idea that he is not capable of being a good person, even if he wants to be. He has quite flexible morality and a lack of personal values because of that lack of true personhood growing up.
The Sun: What is Rook passionate about? How do they fuel that passion?
Vio really lost all passion for everything he once held through his deep depression downslide. But in his time with the Veilguard as he learns to better manage it, at least the best he can, he starts getting curious about elven history and culture again. Especially thanks to Bellara's infectious attitude towards it.
Death: What part of Rook do they need to kill to become the best version of themselves?

the lovers and judgement for the rook tarot asks!
Wow, I was surprised someone will actually ask haha. Thanks!)
(Eng is not my first language, so if there any mistakes pls inform me)
rn i have 3 main Rooks:
qunari Virida Aldwir (she/her), dwarf Teighan Ingellvar (she/they) and elf Nailynn Thorne (she/her)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Lovers: Who is your Rook's most significant relationship within the Veilguard? How do they help Rook feel seen and understood?
Virida: She’s very flattered by Emmrich attention, thoughtfulness and kindness. Not a lot people gave her that (outside of her family). Also she’s impressed with how much effort he puts in their dates. Since she has vibe of “mom” of team, it’s nice to have someone who would take care of her. Tbh, just his smile makes her heart go crazy, but she would never admit it haha.
Teighan: Despite their origins, Teighan is very collected person. With Bellara it’s more Teighan making sure she’s seen. Especially, as Mourn Watcher, helping her going through grief. Also, Teighan never thought that their friendship will (or could) blossom into something more. Maybe just being there for their partner and not being alone is what Tei needed.
Nailynn: This Rook is very anxious and clumsy and Neve’s confidence and cool persona makes Nailynn feel more secure and she less afraid to be more herself around Neve. Also Rook feel that Neve actually likes her company wich makes Lynn happy. Nailynn also had big crush on Neve since their first interaction in the Lighthouse.
Judgement: How does Rook approach difficult decisions? How do they cope with the consequences of those choices?
Virida: Like a responsible leader she thought about all possibilities with hope that none of her team get hurt. She accepts the consequences of the actions. Tho, she’s stubborn person and acts very defensive about her decisions.
Teighan: They act first and think second. Probably, later (in the beginning of Act 2) Teighan actually sit and rethink everything, when she realise that it’s not only her life on line. Someone will get hurt if Tei won’t be careful.
Nailynn: If things turn out badly, she will blame herself mostly since she’s in charge. Nailynn always unsure of herself and she better under someone else guidance, but eventually she’ll become more confidante in herself.

fantasy:
I load up Dragon Age: Veilguard for my first play. After creating my Rook, I progress to a simple screen. "Continuing Your Adventure?", it asks, with a quick explanation that this part of customization is optional and will have no effect on the Veilguard story, but players of previous games can enter a few key choices and find easter eggs about them while exploring.
"Don't mind if I do!" I say, and am taken to a lovely interface where I make about 10 choices by selecting beautiful tarot cards representing the major outcomes of previous games. This is a pleasant experience, because each card is accompanied by a brief summary of that choice and an intriguingly vague blurb about the consequences it had over the past decade-ish in Thedas. Fun! I read the lore, admire the art, reminisce on playthroughs of yore, and enter Veilguard excited to experience the next part of the story.
Later, I loot an "Orlesian mask", and Rook or a companion delivers a banter line referencing the leader(s) of Orlais, whom I selected in world state customization. Hark, codex updated?! I open the entry and read it, and the text delivers payoff on the intriguingly vague blurb from the tarot card.
By the end of the game, I have found similar easter eggs for all of the world state choices I selected in customization. While it would have been nice for these choices to be woven more organically into the story, I understand why this would have been impractical, and am content to see my Thedas represented in a simple, fun, and engaging way :)

Dragon Age: The Veilguard
There's some post-game thoughts I can mark as spoiler ones. Read only if you finished the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love the game. Really. The grand finale was magnificent, the main plot idea is painfully touching and I adore the heavy weight of sorrow I bear after I finished the game. The best kind of bittersweet grief of possible.
However it doesn't mean the game is flawless. There's some stuff I didn't get at all.
Why there's no option to ask Solas about the Forgotten Ones? Like, hello, you have an encyclopedia of elven lore in your head, can't you ask a few optional questions about weird ancient guy you've met during the journey? Nadas Dirthalen? (Or it's because da5 is going to be about new dwarven and/or qunari lore and Forgotten Ones/Executors?)
You also can't say anything about the murals.. which is kinda strange. Why didn't Rook comment those mind-blowing revelations? For Harding, at least?
Evanuris. Solas' story is beautifully written, Mythal' story was also revealed more than before (even if she's in all 4 games) so we get to know her better. But Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain? Fine, forget other evanuris.. but the spectacular duo? Spirits and demons are kinda the same, like two sides of a coin. Solas is Wisdom and Pride, Mythal is Benevolence and Retribution (as Morrigan said). Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain are just.. bad? They're blighted and corrupted now but what about the past? Where's the duality of their personalities? No chance for redemption now because they don't want or need it, I get the idea, but the story itself? I wish there would be more about them. We do have something on Ghilan'nain tho, like: she created hallas but can't create them any longer and she has a full control over the Blight as if it's modeling clay (+ some Bellara' thoughts on a matter of "navigation" and "healing" and path Ghilan'nain chose for the People). But Elgar'nan? He likes tyranny. And he still had his hair. Uhm.. ┐( ∵ )┌
Romances. Can't say much because I didn't try all of them but Neve's and Lucanis'.. uhm. It doesn't feel like a written romance, y'know? Just a bonus lines so you doesn't have to feel lonely or whatever. Characters are on their own and don't have connection with Rook till the very end. There's no impact and Rook is, ironically, just an enjoyable side benefit™ but nothing more. Comparing to datv romance situation solavellan romance is hot as hell and full of content. And it says a lot.
Inquisitor. I do like how their absence was explained... yet Lavellan was robbed. I don't want to see a cringe Fade therapy session with Solas telling his tragic lovestory to a random stranger (Rook) and whining about just how much he misses his gorgeous wife (and I'm solavellan). But adding a few tiny details? The bare minimum: take the dai tarot card and place it on the wall in a music room. That already could've been much better. (mods mods mods 🤞🤞🤞).
Dialogue timing and triggers. I suspect dialogues are cool but I can't know for sure. In my first playthrough I didn't even know Davrin and Lucanis are not a big fans of each other before the Weisshaupt quest because I didn't hear it. DATV locations are much smaller than it was in DAI, so you just don't get the chance to hear those dialogues unless you find a trigger point and just stay there waiting to play all lines.
Some of that is not a tragedy and, theoretically, could be improved by magnificent people creating mods. But sometimes datv seems kinda unfinished like there's a missing puzzle pieces as if content was cut out with no replacement.
Despite some questionable moments and a bit of criticism I love this game regardless. It's dark and atmospheric, absolutely beautiful and mesmerizing. And analysis of Regret? Choices and consequences, acceptance, struggling, desperation, guilt..? The work Bioware did deserves to be highly appreciated. The final left me in tears, sobbing and grieving, and heartbroken - that's all I ever wanted of Dragon Age 💜

The High Priestess,The Hermit and The World!
The High Priestess: Which does Rook obey more: their head or their heart?
and
The Hermit: When Rook is alone with their thoughts, what do they think about? Is solitude a blessing or a curse for them?
i feel like before the events of veilguard gentle has never had to make difficult choices that would require them to listen to one above the other; what they had to do and how was always dictated for them by someone else. during the antaam job something just clicked inside - afterwards they were at a loss for why they acted the way they have. varric's relentless insistence that they are a good person who can handle the responsibility of being a leader and "do the right thing" confused and terrified them; like a puppet with its strings cut, they were unsure what sort of person they even are, let alone why varric thought they were good. what if they weren't? the antaam thing came out of nowhere. or not? why did they do it? everyone else trusts varric's judgement and expects them to act accordingly. now they must pretend that they know what they're doing, or maybe they actually do know? then again, they make choices that are expected of them given the circumstances... or because they want to make them? how can you expect a knife to decide on its own who or what or why to strike?
suffice to say, gentle tries to avoid being left to its own devices as much as possible.
The World: What does happily-ever-after look like for Rook? Is it attainable, or just wishful thinking?
i think after all the personal growth gentle does during and after veilguard they would feel reluctant to return to the crows. neve would go back to minrathous to do what she does best, and gentle would follow, because where else should trouble be if not by her side? they might even join the shadow dragons. they do still love killing people, after all. and there's no shortage of people to kill in minrathous

From tthe Rook tarot card ask game:
The World: What does happily-ever-after look like for Rook? Is it attainable, or just wishful thinking?
Thank you for asking!
(Rook Tarot Asks)
Happily-ever-after for Lenore is her bones buried in the memorial gardens and Lucanis's with her. This is morbid, but also largely because actual happiness in life isn't something she can easily imagine. There are too many factors outside of her control. But death, especially after they are victorious at the end? She has faith that she will wind up in the right place then.

the empress and the wheel of fortune for Lydia? :]
ahh thank you for the ask <333
The Empress: What does family mean for Rook?
Answered here!
The Wheel of Fortune: Describe an interesting character moment for your Rook. What made this moment stand out to you?
There are definitely a few moments that stick out in my memory, but I'm gonna go with a fun one for this question: The lead up to the Fangscorcher fight 🔥 Taash described her as a quote "big dumb puppy" afterwards, and I feel like that hit the nail on the head lol. She was so excited for this fight, she doesn't share Taash's dragon expertise but she does love dragons, they're these huge powerful beasts with abilities strong enough to rock your to your core...... she'd never fight one for no reason, obviously, and it's not like she wants to have a bunch of innocent dead dragons to deal with on a logical level, but like. if the dragon's already causing trouble anyway. and there's really no other choice but to tango with it... CanShePleaseFightTheDragonPleasePleaseOmgSheWantsToFightADragonSOBAD-
and idk it's just a moment I find really really cute, and appropriately "Dragon" Age heh <3

the empress for the rook tarot card questions?
Thank you for the ask!
The Empress: What does family mean for Rook?
That is a difficult question for Therena to answer. Since her childhood, her entire family was just her and her mother, striving to make a living in the streets of Treviso after her Dalish clan were massacred. It was only after her mother was compelled to sell her to the Antivan Crows that for the longest time, Therena bore some real resentment toward the idea of family, especially toward her mother. Unbeknownst to Therena, House De Riva had given her mother more and often sent some letters to her regarding Therena's growth, especially as the Fifth Talon had been sweet on her mother. For the longest time, however, Therena kept to herself. Oh, she was cheeky; she was flirty; you can even call her friend if you got close enough. But family? Only Viago received such an honor, and that took years of exasperated sighs and groans from the poor man.
Family means trust, the promise that through blood and grief, you will always be there for them...and be there to knock them silly if they are about to do something that would put them or the entire family in danger. Family means laughing and making terrible jokes and spending long hours playing some board games. But family also means choice - who they are, what they are to you, what they can be for you, and what you can be for them. She can choose her family...but don't expect her not to be overly concerned about them. They choose to sign up with her - it's only fair they get her worried side - mixed in with some necessary poor humor.

Rook Tarot Card Ask Game -
The Fool: Where did Rook's journey begin? What were they doing before joining the Veilguard?
Teehee I wrote a backstory fic that I'll just share again for this one!
Death: What part of Rook do they need to kill to become the best version of themselves?
Honestly if someone just gave Vio a good dose of daily Venlafaxine he'd be great. But since that's not available, I think what would do him good is if he learned how to accept love from others easier.

Rook Tarot: the Devil
The Devil: What type of demon is most likely to target Rook? Why?
Eth’renan would be targeted most by Despair Demons, I think. They’re generally a very hopeful person, but despair easily creeps into their mind - especially after Weisshaupt. Desperation Demons (like the one found in Minrathous) would also be a good fit. I’d consider them a subset of Despair Demons, honestly.
Thank you for the ask! ♥️

for the tarot card asks: the magician, the wheel of fortune, the devil, and the sun!
The Magician: What are Rook's thoughts on Solas? Do they change as the story progresses?
Zea has heard a lot about Solas from Varric before the events of the game, so that colors her judgement on him. She does not trust him, knows that he lies, and decides to be a sassbucket to him whenever she has the chance. She mellows a bit as the game goes on, but still doesn't trust him. After Fade Jail she is pissed and out for blood.
The Wheel of Fortune: Describe an interesting character moment for your Rook. What made this moment stand out to you?
During Weisshaupt Zea is trying to fight three hurlocks at the same time in addition to darkspawn, trying to keep an eye on Bellara who is freaking out (understandably), and Davrin is trying to Dad Joke about the whole thing.
Afterwards, in the library, she just stares at the door- mind spinning trying to process everything that had just happened...and just starts laughing. Because the alternative is crying and right now they all need her to somewhat hold it together.
That stands out to me because they're trying to fight a god who turned into smoke while keep everything from falling apart and is just...failing at it. Things gets messy and people get hurt (even Zea breaks her arm while fighting the archdemon). So much rests on Rook being strong and figuring out what to do when things go south and no one the First Warden wants to listen to reason.
side note: Zea got so angry at the First Warden that she lost her cool and punched him right in the face
The Devil: What type of demon is most likely to target Rook? Why?
Either a Rage or Fear demon. Rage on getting revenge for being a Tevinter slave for a good chunk of her life, tempting her with giving into the anger that she feels for the practice/owners and wanting to do more than just raid slaver ships with the Lords.
Fear because as it goes on, she sees everyone looking to her more and more for guidance and how the team trusts her and it scares her because she still feels guilty for choosing Minrathous over Treviso and she knows that she's going to have to make another decision like that again and doesn't want to make the wrong decision. Also fear of losing Emmrich because it's always been casual (the few dalliances that she's had) but with him...it's different and she's afraid of losing him- either to his work or him realizing that she's Not It and being cast adrift once more.
The Sun: What is Rook passionate about? How do they fuel that passion?
Learning! Because she was a slave in Tevinter, she didn't have a lot of formal schooling (once her magic manifested her owner did the bare minimum so she wouldn't just set things on fire) but once she gained her freedom with the Lords of Fortune, she couldn't get her hands on enough books. There's the running joke with the Lords that if you can't find a book on something just ask Zea because she might have it.
With the Lord's she'd go straight inside a ship to see if there was a library and if so, go through it and take whatever struck her interest, then with Emmrich she'll go through his library at the Lighthouse and read what interests her. She'll also buy serials from docktown to share with Bellara and ask Viago if the Crows had any books he'd recommend.

hermit and emperor 😌
ty ty <3
The Hermit: When Rook is alone with their thoughts, what do they think about? Is solitude a blessing or a curse for them?
More of a blessing, not because he minds being around people but because it gives him time to focus on his own things without interruption and it forces him to put himself first. He's someone people count on and go to for advice, and he seeks people out to care for them too, which doesn't leave much room for himself. The people closest to him know to take the time to ask him what he needs, or to make sure he gets a break.
The Emperor: What does Rook's leadership style look like?
He tries to lead by example and to project what he wants everyone else to feel. If they see he's confident, they will be too, but he's also careful to make sure that it doesn't become overconfidence and carelessness. He's very good at seeing everyone's strengths or potential, and putting them to use where they can do the most good. Being used to dealing with spirits from a young age shaped a bit of how he interacts with people in that sense. Identifying their nature, and nudging them towards what makes them thrive and away from what could most easily break them.

the magician and the hermit for the ask game!
Rook Tarot Card Ask Game
The Magician: What are Rook's thoughts on Solas? Do they change as the story progresses?
Phryne was pretty disdainful of Solas at the beginning. Like, he’s going to cause some serious damage with his ritual, of course she thinks he’s an asshole. As the story goes on, she comes to pity him. She doesn’t think he’s right or justified, but she can see why he made the decisions he did. He just needs to swallow his pride and let people in. I go into it a little more here.
The Hermit: When Rook is alone with their thoughts, what do they think about? Is solitude a blessing or a curse for them?
I think Phryne is generally pretty well-adjusted, mentally speaking. She might be thinking about her family and how she should check up on them. Or as the game progresses, her thoughts are taken up by a certain gentleman necromancer… it’s not until the endgame that ~events~ happen to shake her confidence. But generally, she’s not the type to dwell on things.

Hi there 😊 I love your ideas about Arden; he's such an interesting character! I saw you reposted the Rook Tarot Cards Asks prompt, and wondered whether you'd be happy writing about The Chariot and The Hanged Man for Arden? Have a great day ✌️
Oh thank you! I love that other people like Arden <3. Let's see;
The Chariot: How does Rook fight? What are their preferred abilities and damage type?
So first off, typically when I think about my characters and the story, I strip away game mechanics, and with them go a lot of the "damage type" things. Arden fights long and short sword, but with more historical styles. So the short sword is primarily defensive, the longer sword primarily offensive, and grappling moves like leg sweeps and weapon binding are standard fare. Whereas Lucanis's style, for example, is heavily focused on surprise, on ending the fight before your opponent has a chance to bring up their defense, and so acrobatics and so on are more relevant, Arden's style is defensive, reliant on keeping yourself standing until you have an opening. They'd have pretty different footwork--Lucanis focused on mobility, Arden on stability. Seeing as they're both pretty out of the element they're trained for (most of the fights they face are neither a pitched battle nor an assassination), they have a lot of opportunities to teach each other something. They're both fast fighters, rather than powerful (though Lucanis is faster, to Arden's somewhat horny chagrin). On the other hand, where Davin relies on being able to absorb a lot of force without taking damage, Arden can't do that and doesn't try. When an Antaam soldier swings at him, he depends on not being there when the blow comes through.
He really hates those two sickle Venatori fucks. Don't we all.
The Hanged Man: What does Rook do when their hard work doesn't pay off? How do they cope with failure?
I regret to inform you that he punches stuff. Not people; he would never take his frustrations out on someone who doesn't deserve it for more than maybe a couple verbal snips. But definitely a few minutes alone to shout and fuck up his knuckles, yeah. There's a scene I have to write, someday, when he gets to Minrathous after repelling the dragon from Treviso, and...yeah. I haven't felt like doing that to myself yet.
