When deciding who to work for there is a sliding scale of employers that goes from lil mom and pop shops up to corporate monoliths. I have worked at both ends of the spectrum and I can pretty definitively say that tiny businesses are hands down the most insane employers.
The sweet spot is a place that has like 10-20 stores; that’s the best possible work environment. They’ll be polished enough to have protocols that make work structured, but not so bogged down with bureaucracy that nothing can ever get done.
This story is not from that sweet spot. This story is from my time working at Oil and Vinegar. Now, like many little franchise stores, the idea was solid. There was on tap imported olive oil and vinegar and it was really delicious. Top shelf. Unfortunately, each location was like the Wild West because owners varied wildly.
My owner was the human embodiment of Mr. Krabbs. His eyes were just constant dollar signs. Throughout my training he informed me of the price of every single piece of equipment I touched and how much it cost to replace it.
He had cameras set up to watch us, and an app on his phone to access the live feed. He’d call us to ask what we were doing when he’d just checked a camera to make sure we were being honest.
Now, the trouble was he had two locations. His location further south did amazing. It was way more centrally located and got three times the foot traffic. The one I worked in was in the snottiest mall possible in Arizona and consequently the rent was through the roof.
It was not going well for my store. We didn’t get as much traffic, so there was only so much I could do in a day. I could dust, sweep, and wait for customers. I read a lot and was frank when he called to interrogate me. I always asked for additional tasks but he never had any. What could I do to prop up a failing business?
But this man was convinced there was some Secret Reason that the store I was in was doing worse. He crunched numbers, looked at staff, and eventually hit upon the most insane possible solution.
We used too much toilet paper.
We were probably stealing toilet paper! Bleeding him dry one single ply square at a time! How dare we need to use the bathroom?! His south location used half as much toilet paper as we did, we must be thieving little monsters!!!!
Friends. The south location was populated entirely by men. My location had three people on staff who had to sit to pee. It was so blindly transparently the source of the discrepancy but this man was convinced we were making off with toilet paper to bankrupt him.
So he implemented what he believed to be an entirely reasonable response to this base treachery. We were allowed to have one roll of toilet paper. At any given time, one roll was permitted to us. This was so transparently unhinged that we protested but he insisted. If we were low on toilet paper we needed to call him to drop off a roll that he brought from his home. Smiling jovially, he assured us he lived so close by that it would be no problem!
When we needed to call him often for more he started tearing his hair out. What were we using toilet paper for?! Why wasn’t his genius plan to stop our scandalous waste working??!
Finally, the manager, the only man on staff had to pull the owner aside and be like, “Look, man, their bladders are smaller. They need to wipe every time they pee. They need to pee even more on their period. Is this really the hill you want to die on?”
Yes. It was. The manager was fired unrelated reasons and denounced as a traitor. The toilet paper ration lasted until I quit and probably until the store closed six months later.

Vans aren't "cool," but they are enjoying a sort of renaissance of sorts. The desirability of these boxy, cargo-hauling conveyances represents some admittedly minor hope for the future. If vans regain their ancient popularity, there is a chance that we can overthrow the dictatorship of the pickup truck and return to our traditional values as a society.
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not some wacko van fundamentalist. Sure, I do get into theological arguments with Ford people about which generation of the Econoline is derived most purely from van theory, but that's on our own territory. Not something for the regular folk to see.
You have nothing to fear about me giving you a shank if you accidentally call a half-cut container truck the deeply unfunny slur that is "cube van." I won't even get mad if you prefer a hatchback. Anything that can haul cargo in an enclosed vessel, and does so often, is an honorary van in my book. And it's a good idea, before we proceed, to talk about just why vans are becoming more popular.
Vans are in fact the only houses that many people can own. Sad but true. You could live in a pickup truck, too. Nobody is denying that, but that's like living in one of those strange Arizona desert homes where there's only enough roof for your bed, a novel about libertarianism, and a small overhang to keep your ammo and canned beans dry. Just not enough enclosed area. No sense of security. Throbbing paranoia at all minutes that if you stop at the Home Depot just for a minute that someone will steal your groceries out of the bed.
Me, I like to have a nice personal space which will be largely protected if I roll the thing into the ditch doing triple the speed limit. It's bad enough already without having to walk half a kilometre back from the impact site, picking up all your strewn possessions from the roadside. Better to keep the sleeping bags, provisions, and pet chickens on the inside of the vehicle.
If there can be said to be a downside to the growth of van popularity, it is that they are more popular than ever. Demand means resale value skyrockets, which means I can't easily get a new van to replace my old one when it gets towed by the cops or love-taps the bollard in the Tim Hortons drive-thru. That's why I've started investing in motorhomes, which are the van for people who can't afford vans or houses. They just so happen to come with big-ass V8s, too, like all of the other places I've ever lived. It's like I was never evicted at all.

Here’s a very unusual dome home in Scottsdale, Arizona. Built in 2000, it’s on the market to $3.2M.
Tumblr media
The dome is actually a frame with shades that keep the sun from shining down on the house. It would seem that the dry air and sun would deteriorate those panels pretty quickly and you’d always be replacing them.
Tumblr media
It’s an artsy house- look at the copper and silver tile in the entrance foyer. Also, that’s an unusual ceiling light.
Tumblr media
There’s a fireplace at the foot of stairs, but it’s not conducive to sitting before the fire, b/c you’d be blocking the stairs.
Tumblr media
Instead, the sitting area is in a corner next to the dining area.
Tumblr media
The house has big windows, but is well-shielded from the sun by plants and the shades.
Tumblr media
Here’s another seating cluster.
Tumblr media
The kitchen has 2 dining options.
Tumblr media
The home has seating groupings around the main floor- these 2 areas flow into the kitchen. Notice that the metal beams above have shades to block the sun from the glass roof.
Tumblr media
This sitting area has a fireplace.
Tumblr media
Here’s the view from the mezzanine.
Tumblr media
The main bd. - it’s a big home with 6 bds.
Tumblr media
There are also 8 baths. The en suite gives me the urge to paint that round part red w/white polka dots. Doesn’t it look like The Super Mushroom?
Tumblr media
I don’t know how I feel about seeing these triangular shades in every window.
Tumblr media
This bd. has a matching orange en suite.
Tumblr media
The rec room is a large area with gaming tables.
Tumblr media
Not sure what this large structure is for, but it seems to have lots of storage and electrical outlets.
Tumblr media
There’s also a kitchenette with a wine rack.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Outside is a patio and a smaller version of the shade frame.

Smallish round pool.

Guest house on the property.

Hawaii x Alaska
Summary: Hawaii joins the Statehouse for Christmas
Hawaii decided to join the Statehouse for Christmas. The day after Thanksgiving she walks towards the house. Connecticut, Maryland, Minnesota, Michigan, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming are setting up outside decorations. Texas is laying on the ground groaning.
She walks over to him, "What happened?"
"New York kick me off of the roof." Texas responds.
"Why?" She asks.
"I miss spelled 'Merry Christmas' is Christmas light." Texas explains. "I accidentally forgot the 'h'."
Hawaii looks up at the roof. Indeed he did, it said 'Merry Cristmas.' "Oh. I'm sorry. Do you need help up?"
"No, just leave me be for a little while."
"Ok." Hawaii responds then walk towards the door. As soon as she opens it. It reveals the chaos. New York is bossing everyone around. Delaware is struggling to put the mistletoe in one of the doorways. California, Nevada, Washington, and Oregon are putting the stockings in order. Florida, Louisiana, and Georgia are decorating one of the fake trees. North and South Dakota are bickering about something. Pennsylvania and Massachusetts are also bickering while walking to the kitchen, they get caught under the mistletoe, PA kisses Mass and also most gets punched in the face until PA points above them, Mass still punches him and he almost gets knocked out. Rhode Island and New Jersey are decorating one of the fake trees. DC and Utah are cooking in the kitchen. Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine are decorating another on of the fake trees. Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa are setting the table. New Mexico is sorting couch pillows of one of the couches and Arizona is sorting the other. Colorado, Missouri, and Wisconsin are decorating the last fake tree. Illinois and Indiana are bickering while hanging Christmas home decor. North Carolina and Virginia are making out under the mistletoe. South Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama are hanging Holly around the house. Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia are wrapping the banisters in garland. And Alaska is no where to be seen.
Hawaii walks over to New York with a smile, "Mele Kalikimaka! How can I help?"
"Go get you fucking boyfriend and tell him to get his Moose ass in here." New York says as nicely as he can.
"Where is his room?" Hawaii asks.
"The garage. That way. You'll know when you see it. " New York points in the direction that the garage is.
Hawaii walks in that direction. She approaches a door with a sign that has the word Garage written on it crossed out and replaced with Alaskan Wilderness. She opens the door to find Alaska sitting on his bed watching Supernatural on his computer. "Mele Kalikimaka!"
He looks over at her, "Merry Crisis."
"Oh, don't say that." Hawaii scolds his playfully. "Mele Kalikimaka me ka Makahiki Hou"
"Merry Crisis and Happy New Fear." He says trying to keep a straight face.
"No! Stop that! Stop being depressed! It's Christmas time. A time for joy not sadness."
Alaska smiles at her, "Fine."
"New York told me to tell you, and I quote, 'get his Moose ass in here'."
"Ugh, I guess I better go." Alaska says and gets up. They walk into main room. "What do you want me to do?" Alaska asks New York.
"Go fixed the Christmas light outside. Texas miss spelled Christmas and I want you to fix it." New York says.
"Why me?" Alaska asks.
"Because you're not doing anything."
"Fine." Alaska walks outside with Hawaii to find Texas still laying ground. "What happened to him?"
"New York kicked him off the roof." Hawaii explains.
"Ow." Alaska laughs the walks over to Texas. "Hey, little buddy."
"Go away. Let me lay here in my misery." Texas complains.
"Suit yourself." Alaska says the goes on the roof and fixes the lights while Hawaii helps Wyoming put up a wreath. When Alaska is done he goes back over to Texas. "Do you need help up?"
"Yes." Texas says and holds his hand up. Alaska takes his hand and pulls him to his feet. "Thanks."
"You're welcome."

Commercial Roofing in Arizona: Expert Solutions for Businesses
When it comes to maintaining and enhancing the structural integrity of commercial buildings, commercial roofing in Arizona plays a crucial role. Arizona’s harsh climate, with its intense heat, monsoon rains, and occasional dust storms, can take a toll on roofs, making regular maintenance and professional roofing services essential for business owners.
Why Commercial Roofing Matters in Arizona
Arizona’s unique climate conditions require commercial properties to have durable, high-quality roofing solutions that can withstand extreme weather fluctuations. Commercial roofs, unlike residential ones, often cover larger spaces and incorporate different materials like metal, TPO, or modified bitumen, designed to meet the needs of business operations.
Types of Commercial Roofing in Arizona
Businesses in Arizona often select from the following roofing types, each offering unique benefits based on the building’s size, structure, and location:
Metal Roofing: Known for its durability and resistance to the intense Arizona sun, metal roofing is a long-lasting solution for commercial properties. It reflects sunlight, helping to reduce cooling costs, making it energy efficient.
TPO Roofing: Thermoplastic Olefin (TPO) is a popular choice in Arizona due to its energy-saving properties. It reflects UV rays, reduces heat buildup, and provides excellent protection against chemical exposure and punctures.
Modified Bitumen Roofing: This type of roofing is ideal for flat or low-slope roofs common in commercial buildings. It offers a flexible, waterproof membrane that withstands the high temperatures of Arizona’s desert climate.
Built-Up Roofing (BUR): A traditional option, BUR systems consist of alternating layers of asphalt and reinforcing materials, creating a durable and cost-effective roof.
Benefits of Professional Commercial Roofing Services
Investing in commercial roofing in Arizona not only protects your property but also delivers significant financial benefits:
Enhanced Longevity: Professional installation and maintenance extend the life of your commercial roof, preventing costly replacements.
Energy Efficiency: Many commercial roofing materials reflect heat, reducing cooling costs for your business.
Weather Protection: High-quality roofing systems are designed to endure Arizona’s challenging climate, minimizing damage from extreme weather events.
Choosing the Right Commercial Roofing Contractor in Arizona
When selecting a roofing contractor in Arizona, ensure they have experience with commercial roofing. Look for licensed, insured professionals who offer warranties on both labor and materials. Regular inspections and maintenance plans are also essential to ensure your roof continues to perform optimally.
Conclusion
In Arizona’s demanding climate, a reliable commercial roof is critical for protecting your business and reducing long-term costs. Whether you need installation, repairs, or maintenance, partnering with an expert in commercial roofing in Arizona ensures your roof remains durable and efficient, safeguarding your commercial property for years to come.
By investing in quality roofing solutions, Arizona businesses can secure their buildings while improving energy efficiency and minimizing repair costs.

Moss and Algae Growth: These can damage shingles and should be removed.
Rust on Metal Components: Check for rust and treat it to prevent spreading.
Gutter Blockages: Ensure gutters are clear to prevent water backup.
Flashing Damage: Examine the metal strips around chimneys, vents, and skylights for any damage.
Cleaning Your Roof
Keeping your roof clean is essential for maintaining its durability. Debris, leaves, and moss can trap moisture, leading to rot and other damage. Here’s how to clean your roof effectively:
Remove Debris: Use a leaf blower or a soft-bristled broom to clear leaves and branches.
Wash with Care: Use a garden hose to wash off dirt and debris. Avoid using a pressure washer as it can damage shingles.
Treat for Moss and Algae: Apply a mixture of water and bleach (50:50) to affected areas and let it sit for 15-20 minutes before rinsing. Commercial treatments are also available.
Maintaining Gutters and Downspouts
Clogged gutters can cause water to back up under your shingles and into your home. Regularly clean and maintain your gutters to make sure proper water flow:
Clean Gutters: Remove leaves, twigs, and other debris from gutters regularly.
Check for Leaks: Ensure gutters are securely fastened and check for any leaks or damage.
Install Gutter Guards: These can help keep debris out and reduce the frequency of cleaning.

Small issues can quickly become major problems if not addressed promptly. Common repairs include:
Replacing Shingles: If a shingle is damaged, replace it immediately to prevent leaks.
Fixing Flashing: Repair or replace flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights to prevent water penetration.
Sealing Leaks: Use roofing cement or a sealant to patch small leaks temporarily until a professional can inspect and repair them.
Professional Inspections and Maintenance
While regular DIY inspections are important, having a professional roofer inspect your roof annually can identify potential issues that you might miss. Professionals can:
Detect Hidden Damage: Identify issues that are not visible from the ground or to the untrained eye.
Perform Repairs: Address minor issues before they become major problems.
Provide Maintenance Tips: Offer advice tailored to your specific roof type and local climate conditions.
Preparing for Seasonal Changes
Different seasons bring different challenges for your roof. Prepare for seasonal changes with these tips:
Winter: Ensure gutters are clear, check for ice dams, and remove snow buildup to prevent excess weight and damage.
Spring: Inspect for damage from winter storms and clean off any debris accumulated over the winter.
Summer: Check for UV damage and ensure proper ventilation to prevent heat buildup.
Fall: Clear gutters of fallen leaves and inspect for any damage from summer storms.
Enhancing Roof Ventilation
Proper ventilation is crucial for extending the duration of life of your roof. It helps regulate temperature and moisture levels in your attic, preventing damage to your roof structure and materials:
Install Ventilation Systems: Ridge vents, soffit vents, and attic fans can improve airflow.
Check for Blockages: Ensure vents are clear of obstructions like insulation or debris.
Balance Intake and Exhaust Vents: A balanced system ensures air flows efficiently, preventing moisture buildup and heat damage.
Conclusion
Maintaining your roof is an ongoing process that requires attention and care. By performing regular inspections, cleaning, addressing repairs promptly, and seeking professional advice, you can significantly extend the lifespan of your roof. solar panel removal and install cost
Tumblr media
Understanding Solar Panel Removal and Installation Costs
When considering solar energy for your home or business, it's crucial to understand the costs associated with both installing and potentially removing solar panels. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the expenses involved in solar panel removal and install cost.
Solar Panel Installation Costs
The cost of installing solar panels can vary widely based on several factors:
System Size and Type The size of your solar system, measured in kilowatts (kW), directly impacts the cost. Larger systems that produce more energy will be more expensive. Additionally, the type of panels you choose—monocrystalline, polycrystalline, or thin-film—can also affect the price.
Installation Complexity The complexity of the installation can influence the cost. Roof type (e.g., sloped, flat, or metal), roof condition, and any necessary structural reinforcements will all play a role in determining the final price.
Location and Labor Costs Labor costs can vary based on your location. In areas with higher living costs or strong demand for solar installations, you may pay more for labor.
Incentives and Rebates Federal, state, and local incentives can reduce the overall cost. In Arizona, for example, state tax credits and net metering programs can make solar more affordable.
Average Costs
On average, the cost to install solar panels in the U.S. ranges between $15,000 and $30,000 for a residential system, after accounting for federal tax credits. In Arizona, where solar conditions are optimal, you might find costs on the lower end of this spectrum due to high competition and favorable solar incentives.
Solar Panel Removal Costs
If you need to remove solar panels—whether for roof repairs, replacement, or system upgrades—understanding the associated costs is important:
Removal and Reinstallation The cost of removing solar panels is generally lower than the cost of installation but can still vary based on the complexity of the system and the type of roof. On average, removal costs range from $500 to $1,500. Reinstalling the panels will add to this cost.
Potential Roof Repairs If the removal exposes roof damage or necessitates repairs, additional costs may be incurred. These costs depend on the extent of the damage and the type of repair needed.
System Upgrade or Replacement If you’re upgrading or replacing your solar system, the costs will include both removal and new installation expenses. Make sure to get a detailed quote to understand the full scope of the project.
Key Considerations
Get Multiple Quotes Obtain quotes from several installers to compare prices and services. Ensure that the quotes include detailed breakdowns of both removal and installation costs.
Check Warranties Warranties on solar panels and installation can affect long-term costs. Make sure your installer offers robust warranties and consider the potential costs of warranty claims.
Consult with Professionals Consult with experienced solar installers and roofers to get an accurate estimate of solar panel removal and install cost and ensure that any removal or installation is handled professionally.
For those in Arizona, StormPro Roofing offers expert services for both solar panel installation and removal. They can help ensure that your solar system is installed and maintained properly. Visit StormPro Roofing to learn more about their services and get a quote tailored to your needs.
