Friday, October 25: Dio, "Another Lie"
R.I.P. Ronald James "Dio" Padavona (1942-2010), Jimmy Bain (1947-2016)
Sacred Heart was almost immediately derided by everyone (including Vivian Campbell) as a transparent attempt to broaden Dio’s commercial prospects, and while it charted and sold well enough not to raise immediate concerns, in hindsight it was the beginning of the end for Dio on many levels.  Of course, the notion of Ronnie James Dio making hair metal was laughable on its face, and “Another Lie” was an especially hilarious “evil woman” tale that, even with a more rockin’ riff and Vinny Appice going for more of a groove, sounded less swaggering and more like a cranky elf shaking his cane at a bored stripper.  There was something almost charming about Dio, both the man and band, trying to strut around the Sunset Strip like they were Ratt or something, and Campbell did try to spice things up a bit with a nice solo over Ronnie’s typical boxy production.  It was actually the combination of the production, Appice and Campbell that helped “Another Lie” do a nice enough job keeping the Dio train running, because all of that made it feel like something that could be performed on stage while Denzil the dragon hovered behind the drums.

Today we remember the passing of Ronnie James Dio who Died: May 16, 2010 in Houston, Texas
Ronald James Padavona, known professionally as Ronnie James Dio or simply Dio, was an American heavy metal singer-songwriter and composer, and was also known for popularizing the sign of the horns in heavy metal. He fronted or founded numerous groups throughout his career, including Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio, and Heaven & Hell.
Dio is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential heavy metal artists of all time. He is known for popularizing the "Metal Horns" hand gesture in metal culture and his medieval-themed song lyrics. According to a version provided by the singer himself, the act derives directly from the classic Italian apotropaic gesture, which his grandmother usually did. Dio had a powerful, versatile vocal range and was capable of singing both hard rock and lighter ballads. He was awarded the "Metal Guru Award" by Classic Rock Magazine in 2006. He was also named the "Best Metal singer" at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards in 2010 and ranked as the genre's best vocalist in 2013 by music journalist Sacha Jenkins.
In 2009, Dio was diagnosed with stomach cancer and underwent treatment at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
On May 4, 2010, Heaven & Hell announced they were canceling all summer dates as a result of Dio's health condition. His last live performance was with Heaven & Hell on August 29, 2009, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Dio died of the illness on May 16, 2010. Two weeks after his death, a public memorial service was held at The Hall of Liberty, Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles. The hall was filled to capacity, with many more fans sitting outside the hall watching the memorial on multiple giant screens on both the east and south sides of the hall. Friends, family, and former and current bandmates of Dio gave speeches and performed including Rudy Sarzo, Geoff Tate, John Payne, Glenn Hughes, Joey Belladonna, and Heaven & Hell keyboard player, Scott Warren. On the screen was an accompanying documentary covering Dio's career from his early days with Elf to his final project with Heaven & Hell

“We pray to someone,
But when it's said and done,
It's really all the same, with just a different name.
So many voices, all giving choices.
If we listen they will say, oh we can find the way.
But we'll sail along, sing our song, carry on.
'Cause we rock.”
(We Rock – Dio)
A little tribute to My best Metal Singer artist.

“Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll” by Rainbow
In a different time When the words didn't rhyme You could never quite be sure Then on with the change It was simple but strange And you knew the feeling seemed to say it all It cries for you It's the least that you can do Like a spiral on the wind I can hear it screamin' in my mind

EXTRA 3
The Big 4 (Anthrax/Megadeth/Slayer/Metallica),
Live From Sofia, Bulgaria,
2010 Universial
PLAY IT LOUD!
p.s.
R.I.P. Jeff Hanneman (1964 - 2013)

Friday, April 12: Dio, "Breathless"
R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio (1942-2010), Jimmy Bain (1947-2016)
Ronnie James Dio sang with two major acts before striking out on his own, but the success of Holy Diver gave him license to fully unleash his id on The Last in Line.  And while the second Dio album was mostly a logical continuation of its predecessor, there was enough randomness generated by the man going all-in on his preoccupations and tics that something like “Breathless”, which began with a simultaneously bluesy and gnarled Vivian Campbell riff before Ronnie barged in with “No No No No No!!!”, stood out in all sorts of ways, not all of them good.  The track was a rocker driven by Vinny Appice’s blocky percussion and Jimmy Bain’s bass, with Campbell’s guitar more like window dressing (certainly a point of contention for the increasingly malcontent future Whitesnake and Def Leppard axeman), though of course there was no suppressing the power and passion of Ronnie’s growl, even if one was rarely sure about what he was really going on about.  “Breathless” was awesome and ridiculous in equal measure, and nobody would expect anything less from prime Dio.
