DAY 4435
Jalsa, Mumbai Apr 28/29, 2020 Tue/Wed 12:13 AM
37 years .. ! 37 years of ‘MAHAAN’ .. the triple role .. the star cast .. the making the travel the days of work .. and the joy of a first attempt at a triple role .. VFX never heard of .. yet trick camera work and the efficiency of the technology within limitations ..
.. the Father and his 2 sons .. all look alike .. the elder a respected citizen caught in a web of deceit .. one son in the Police and officer .. the other son a fun loving GEN next .. all webbed together in a remake almost of a Kannada film made by the giant legend of the time .. Raj Kumar from Karnataka .. directed by dear dear friend Ramanathan ji , with whom I need several historic films ..
... most of the work done at the AVM Studios in Madras/Chennai .. songs and scenes in Kathmandu, Nepal .. and glorious times spent in its execution .. injuries and all ..
.. the phone song ‘jidhar dekhoon’ .. Pancham da insisting I sing it .. was really badly sung but went with the moment of the scene , so it went ..
.. at the recording with Pancham da .. RD Burman .. Ramanathan ji in the background in dark glasses .. and Pancham da’s closest musician assistants .. at Film Center recording studio at Tardeo, where apart from the recording the main work was film developing in the Lab .. a massive facility where each hour the fate of the release films were decided .. the prints that were being made were tested first here and the projectionists at the facility saw the film first and they were the ones to predict the outcome before the film was released .. almost always they were correct ..
.. and then the songs in Nepal and in the picturesque surroundings ..
.. when the only portable unit of camera personal was this .. at times shooting moments personally ..
..’pyaar mein dilko maar de goli ..’ in Patan , Nepal, now with changed name of Lalitpur .. the city of immense ancient value .. one of the oldest in history and all made of wood , well mostly .. the architecture and the designs simply astonishing ..
.. but sadly most of it destroyed in the recent earthquake in Nepal , .. the crowds included in the song on my insistence rather than leave them to the security to keep away .. felt they could be involved in seeing a romantic song between two lovers .. it worked .. they behaved so well , cooperated and gave applause .. the same location was shot for ‘KHUDA GAWAH’ , when after the Bushkashi horse competition the face of Sridevi is revealed .. it was done here in Patan .. shot division from Afghanistan to Nepal in two successive shots .. the glory of film making ..
.. and in that little break in the shoot to go kayaking with the little fellow .. Abhishek .. the rapids in Nepal are famous the world over and is a very popular sport among the tourists that come from all over the world .. almost drowned there .. got stuck in the kayak as it turned over and could not turn it around in the rapid waters .. still photographer Alam, who travelled with me , realised the situation jumped in and turned the boat over and saved me ..
... and the injury because of that above .. had to slide down the rope in a song and action sequence .. never realised that rope friction is the worst burn ever .. the shot happened .. sliding down I knew I was damaging my hand but what the heck the show must go on .. shot over the hand lacerated to bits ..
.. PACK UP .. into hospital .. drugged , treated , stitched up .. bandaged .. off to Bombay then to be at the wedding of Chintu .. yes Rishi Kapoor .. there I am all strapped up , in the baraat .. Shammi Kapoor ji in front of me .. at the Burmah Shell Complex in Chembur .. and by next morning back to Chennai/Madras and resume shooting ..
.. the art of camouflaging the injured hand became a routine exercise later too, when it blew up during Divali, handling a bomb firecracker .. immediate films .. Inquilab and Sharaabi .. hand in pocket mostly or a handkerchief wrapped around to express style .. 🤣🤣🤣 ..
and the often exploited picture at Patan, Nepal from the song :
... ahhh life .. boundless and filled with the uncertainties of the day .. but liveable , loveable and full of delight ..
.. err .. incidentally those tinted aviators , became quite a rage, then .. had got them off a store during a travel overseas .. perhaps Rodeo Drive, LA .. remained with me for some time and then in the spring cleaning of the home got rid of them .. a whole bunch of them just threw them away .. Abhishek almost killed me for doing that because they became the in thing in todays times ..
.. how was I to know ..
fashions repeat .. and if you’ve been around long enough, or are planning to be around long enough .. NEVER throw out the old stuff .. lessons learnt ..
.. I mentioned in one of my Blogs of the cleaning up that needed to be done and the remark from one of the Ef that if there is a motive to throw out could it be thrown in their direction for they would like to posses it ..
... SERIOUSLY ..? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Good night .. शुभ रात्रि .. تصبح على خير tusbih ealaa khayr .. இனிய இரவு Iṉiya iravu ..
and in all the languages of India .. and a few overseas too ..
Amitabh Bachchan

October 11 - Living Legend BrAmHa B
BrAmHa B or Brother Amitabh Harivansh Rai Bachchan is the living legend of Hindi Cinema..
Some facts about the Man in a sort of a chronological sequence.. though not always with dates or years..
October 11 1942 - Birth - Born as the first son of Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan at Allahabad (Now Prayagraj)
Attended Sherwood College Nainital - First introduction to Stage acting
Graduated in Science from Kirori Mal College, Delhi University
Served at Kolkata probably as a an executive at Blue Bird
Ajitabh pushes him to join Madhuri contest to join films (probably the same year as Rajesh Khanna is picked and he is not)
Comes to Bombay to try his luck in Hindi film Industry.. Khwaja Ahmad Abbas gives him his first chance to prove his worth with Saat Hindustani
November 1969 The first film wins him a national award
Many producers and directors turn him down stating ‘ Kaise baans jaise log bhi actor banane chale aate hain ‘
1971 Hrishikesh Mukherjee cast him as Babu Moshay or Dr.Bhaskar Banerjee in Anand along with Superstar Rajesh Khanna who was suffering from Cancer.. Wins his second national award.. I think as best supporting actor
Luck still does not favor him much films after films bear the label of flops including Bansi Birju with Jaya Bhaduri who had established herself as a great natural actor in Guddi with Hrishi Da..
The stories say he had almost decided to quit and return and had spent a night at Nariman Point benches (hearsay, I have no proof) when comedy star Mehmood took him home and made Bombay to Goa casting him in lead role opposite Aruna Irani
1973 Zanjeer released - He tastes the first success in a role which was turned down by quite a few heroes siting anti-hero image.. It seems pran sahab suggested Prakash Mehra to try it out with Amitabh Bachchan .. it unshackled his career like nothing before..
June 1973 Married Jaya Bhaduri at the request of his parents who permitted him to go with her for a vacation only if they could first marry..
Abhimaan and Namak Haraam established the Angry young man Image
Deewaar and Sholay with scripts from Salim-Javed launch him into superstardom at par with Rajesh Khanna or I would say even ahead of him that year.. as he also gave Chupke Chupke and Mili with Hrishi da in the same year
Yash Chopra experimented with him in Kabhi Kabhie to cast him into a romantic image.. the title song by Mukesh topped the charts at Binaca Geetmala
Manmohan Desai cast him in big budget film Amar Akbar Anthony along with Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor in the title roles a film of lost and found sons it was a great blockbuster and set the trends for multistar films
1978 Don did so well in the times of mutistarrer films that he could pull up success with anything he touched .. The same year Trishul and Muqaddar Ka Sikandar also turned out to be mega blockbusters.. in spite of the fact that they were released within a short span of each other
His first decade ended on a high note with such success stories as mentioned above.. He was considered almost a sure shot for the success of a film
‘Mere Paas aao Mere Doston’ - Recorded first song as a playback singer for himself in Mr. Natwarlal
Yash Chopra cast him in a great film ‘Kaala Patthar’ without a single song for him and I consider it as one of the top films for him.. in fact he had not been offered many dialogues either .. his temperament alone made his role click so well
Real life rumors or stories of his affair with Rekha were weaved into a great film Silsila in 1981 by Yash Ji.. who must be said to be a director who really brought out the best in him besides Hrishi da
He is injured on the sets of ‘Coolie during a fight scene with Punit Issar and battles for life.. I think if I am right he was declared dead in some newspapers or bulletins only to be revived by doctors at Breach Candy Hospital.. His fans and family celebrate 2nd August as his second birth.. life after death.. too dramatic
During his battle for life producers and directors would often be going through anxious moments that had invested too heavily on him.. he was the most successful actor and superstar..
India and Indians prayed for his life in different places of worship.. here was a man who was above all cast and creed and would make his way into the hearts of millions of Indians of all ages
I conclude this first innings of his career slightly beyond the first decade of his life in Hindi film industry.. probably eight of my top 10 favorite films are from this first innings of his career.. he still acts and acts quite well at that.. Black 2005 and Piku much later are the only other two films which make into my top 10 fllms.. and not find a mention here
Love Affection and Respect

Tarun Tejpal - Remembering the Original Chocolate Boy Of Bollywood in His Birthday Month – Rishi Kapoor
"The Kapoor khandaan is like the Apple iPhone. The same product, just slimmer in every generation," said Ranbir Kapoor in an interview to Tarun Tejpal
September was a month Rishi Kapoor loved just a little more than other months, and while his own birthday — September 4 — was probably part of why, it was September 28 that he often remarked on as being one of the most special days in his life.
Not surprising, when one dives into the details. It was, of course, the day his son Ranbir Kapoor — worthy successor to the original "chocolate boy" legend of his father — was born. It was also however the date his first film, a landmark in Indian filmdom, Bobby, was released in 1973. It was also, coincidentally, the birthday of his sister Rima Jain, and of another figure he deeply adored and admired, Lata Mangeshkar.
September 2021 should have marked Rishi's 70th birthday but he succumbed to cancer in 2020, leaving an entire generation with the void of a superstar who came to define an entire genre of 70s filmmaking.
With a career spanning over 100 romantic movies, he at once continued a legacy but also came to mark a pivotal moment of transition in the history of the Kapoor clan, he acknowledged in a fascinating interview with Tarun Tejpal in 2013 — the year which, coincidentally, marked 100 years of Indian cinema. "The Kapoor contribution to the first 100 years of Indian cinema is 84 years," he proudly recounted to Tarun Tejpal.
For his father's generation, he noted, there were so many issues, so many social fractures, so many complex changes to reckon with that the actors of the time found themselves immersed in work that had a serious, substantial, deep social impact. Things changed in the 70s. "By the time I was acting, I and other actors like me were often working on four or five films at the same time that all were basically lost-and-found stories! A child or two children are lost in the beginning, meet at the end, and the film is everything that happens in between," he laughed to Tarun J Tejpal.
This could have been make or break in the Kapoor clan's continued presence and dominance of the film industry but Rishi found a way to make the genre his own, infusing his sparkle, joie d'vivre and infectious energy into even the most formulaic of projects and winning the adoration of millions in the process.
That he was never conflicted about wanting to be an actor is evident from an anecdote he narrated to Tarun Tejpal in the same interview. While his first adult role in the movies was in Bobby, it was in Shree 420 that he first made a fleeting appearance as a toddler, in the seminal song Pyaar Hua Iqrar Hua. One night at the dinner table, his father Raj Kapoor asked his mother Krishna whether he should cast their son Chintu in the movie as the baby joker. So elated was he at these words, but unwilling to risk revealing his joy in case something foiled the plans, he showed no reaction but went to his room straight after dinner, sat at his table, pulled out a sheet of paper — and started practising his autograph.
It's the kind of anecdote that both warms the heart but also reflects the rare authenticity that he brought to the screen in his acting career — you could see his spirit shine through his work, a radiant, unselfconscious joy at doing the only thing he had clearly ever wanted to do.
Speaking of being part of an inheritance as extraordinary as the Kapoors, Ranbir spoke of the paradox that to do justice to a legacy you had to disregard it. "Only your own intelligence and your own work can take you forward, their accomplishments won't," he astutely pointed out. And in a metaphor that showed that while he was deferential and respectful to his father sitting alongside him onstage, he had a cheeky, sharp mind of his own, he remarked on the fact that in fact there's a lot similar between the different generations of Kapoor men. "Fundamentally we're all similar, we're just different generations of the same product. If I could make a silly comparison, we're like the Apple iPhone. My grandfather was generation one, my father was the second generation, Karisma here is the third and I'm the fourth. We're the same, only maybe (like the phone) just getting slimmer in every generation, that's all."
Unquestionably, he has his father's smart, sassy genes, and we can see just why Rishi counted the date of his son's birth as the highlight of the annual calendar!
