I got. thoughts. about valens and voices in imperial roman history. but I also got a lot of thoughts about uhhhhhh choosing your brother for co ruling the Fratricide Foundation Story Empire. many thoughts about themistius' oration too

#it's also the Incest-Cannibalism Empire but that's a discussion for a different blog#all of the heavy hitters were Incest Empires btw. that's a feature of Empire across all of time. not always Cannibalism tho. UHHHHH.#feels like you're trying to overwrite history and while you succeeded ONCE the uncle-nephew antagonism with a body count#somehow feels worse????? feels worse. i dont like anything that happened to valentinian 2#anyway. as a result: i personally will be including the bigamy accusations against valentinian into my belief system#stuprum babyyyyy! a requirement for every emperor! valens is lacking here so valentinian has to pick up the slack#valens will be giving me an opening to fire shots at figures in christianity i dislike which is honestly better than scandalous sex#later roman empire tag#komiks tag#brother emperors tag#IF. you missed my brother emperors posting. the head in hands thing here is meant to be a little bit offputting on account of#valentinian being valens' imperial maker. that's a life in your hands. overtures of fratricide. etc. you get the point#whatever other subtext you want to apply to it from the subtext spice cabinet. im not picky. this was a quick comic i did#to shake off the depression cobwebs lmao. eventually i'll style guide this era and do comics with more intentional thought later

Hi! I'm audreyscribes. This was and is still just a place for me to write stuff whenever and whatever I write, whenever inspiration comes to me; usually fanfiction work. I generally answer asks but I also make the choice if I don't feel like I can write it or not. I also do art mainly but those are usually on my art blog @audreycreations OR @sketchykitty_art on INSTA. I have written for so far, but am not limited to: [Percy Jackson and the Olympians], [DC Comics]

~INTRODUCTORY POST~
So... Finally got our own blog, do we? About damn TIME! The biggest gangsters in Gotham deserve a little recognition for our efforts!
Don't be so full'a yourself, Sionis. This is only for expository purposes. And, odds are, we'd be better off with no one knowin' we've been runnin' this shithole t' begin with.
Can't help publicity, Oswald... Comes with the trade of being the Kings of Gotham.
Fair enough... But let's keep our publicity as good as possible for now. Any undue attention could cost us our bloody livelihoods.
True, true. You're the businessman, after all, Oz.
Thank you. Now... where were we?
I've got it. If any of you wanna send us a question or two, maybe a funny little interaction... go right ahead. Who knows? Maybe you could be of use to our operation against that... Bat-Man.
...Though, we always are open to mere conversation. So, by all means, say what you will. We won't stop you.
Just make sure to read up on the rules. 'Less you're fine with your ask getting... well. Lost in a gutter somewhere.

Mythology is one of my favorite styles of storytelling and has been really influential in how I view writing and storytelling in my own work. I think our modern superhero stories are in a lot of ways direct descendants of the stories of gods and heroes of antiquity, something you can see in how frequently those same Greek or Roman or Norse characters show back up in superhero stories. Centuries down the road, I think the characters who are most likely to still be remembered by future generations are likely to be our superheroes who in many ways are our modern mythologies. Superman, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, I think these characters will have staying power beyond any other fictional characters of the last hundred years. Because of this, I disagree with the idea that these stories are less artistic or have less substance. When we talk about superhero stories, we’re not just talking to the current culture, but to future generations as well. I think this is one of the major reasons why superhero stories are so important, because it’s not just the characters that are larger than life, I believe the stories themselves will prove to be so as well.

Würde man zumindest meinen.
Nicht umsonst heißt es "Never change a running system".

hiya! i was wondering if you have a post on how to create a god/deity for your story? thanks!
Writing Deities
What Type of God?
The form and characteristics of your deity characters will depend highly on the overall worldbuilding and mood of your story. Here are some common deity “types”:
Human-like gods who make their own share of mistakes, are tempted by desires (think of Greek/Roman Gods)
“God” as a formless, omnipotent force of the universe that directs people’s fates
An omnipotent God vs, Many gods in charge of one element or thing
Gods who command large spheres of elements (like sea, fire, war, etc.) vs. God of petty things (e.g. the God of morning coffee)
The appearance of a God will reflect what the people of that culture look up to. They can resemble an animal, have almost monster-like features or just look human more or less.
The Implications of Immortality
A god would generally be immortal, and this would be a major difference between your superheroes and a god. They cannot die and therefore are free from the fear of death, which is the most powerful motivator for our heroes.
This means that you’ll need to assign a flaw so that you can kick your deity characters’ butts. Often, this comes from the very fact that gods are immortal.
A tragic backstory of the god losing a human they cared about
A god who wants to die
A god who was kind and compassionate, but grew irritable and tired after seeing eons of human stupidity.
A god who regrets creating the world
Set up limits of their power. Gods cannot invade each other’s territory or they cannot bring back people from the dead. Or they aren’t allowed to roam in modern clothing, and your god happens to hate armor.
In essence, deity characters exist to question the reader’s belief about an aspect of life. Gods are often personifications of abstract concepts and through them you can convey a message about what you think is important.
For example, a Love Goddess may be a shriveled hag while her daughter, the Goddess of Passion, may be a standard beauty. This immediately conveys the message that a pleasing appearance is no substantial factor of true love.
A God’s “Personality”
The most important part of a god’s personality is going to be their attitude towards humans, since the purpose of a god is to command over and protect lives other than theirs.
How does the god feel about being assigned a “job” at birth? Or did they choose to be a god (any regrets)?
Generally, a god’s personality would be linked to the thing they command. The god of the sea may be capricious but surprisingly open-minded; the god of trees may be generous but stubborn, etc.
You can:
Summarize the god’s motto in a single sentence. It can be something philosophical or even comical, depending on the mood of your story. (e.g. “Love is cruel,” “Donuts are always right.”)
What kind of humans the god would like the most vs. hate the most
In general, are they compassionate/loving or sadistic/pessimistic?

A Summoning author's notes
this has been out a little while now, let me add some extra background comments...
i released A Summoning with minimal edits from the 2022 version (just adjusting a few lines of Lilith that felt a bit much really). i call it medievalist but it's not really trying for a specific time period, it's in a sort of vague floating time and place peppered with cool things from the past (like most fantasy), but i try to pull on some more unusual threads at least. very loosely you could place it somewhere in the early early modern period, 15th through 17th centuries.
in England, travelling players became more common in the Elizabethan period. the content of what they perform here is very loosely inspired by the tradition of the morality play.
the intercrural sex scene is a now largely forgotten practice, sometimes done in a sex work context (one reason being that it helps with minimising STI transmission). one notable example was Mervyn Tuchet, who was forced to read a rather convoluted statement of Christian belief and then executed for sodomy in 1631. the 'patting about the loins' joke is riffing on Chaucer. a braies is a kind of loose trouser-like clothing.
like any uminekohead would, I used a magic circle from the Key of Solomon on the cover (in this case the Fourth Pentacle of Venus, which is used to summon a person to you and command spirits of venus and thus makes sense for its use in the story, but more importantly it has a cool and intricate design), which goes back to the 14th or 15th centuries. this one includes a few letters from the Celestial Alphabet of Agrippa, which I inevitably appreciate as a Yoko Taro fan.
the wizard tower is a thing of pure fantasy. I wouldn't know where to begin researching it - I found various threads on forums and reddit about the history of the image of a wizard in his tower (for example), and there's some speculation it's inspired by Roman astrologers, but the association of wizards with towers seems to be more of a 20th-century thing, going back mainly to Howard. the sort of comically misogynist philosophy of magic followed by the Master is more inspired by the 20th-century concepts like 'orgone' than anything truly medieval, mixed with some of the wild ideas that Romans had about sexuality.
a friend reasonably pointed out that lilith's conception of transness is very modern - and sure she's a demon from another world and time, but there is a kind of unintentional aspect where it sort of suggests that from the main narrative authority in the story, the modern conception of 'transness' where you are always really a girl is the final correct one, and that seems against the spirit a bit. this feels like a misstep for me, similar to how the final act of Tipping the Velvet pulls in some quite modern lesbian politics to its Victorian setting. if I were to write again - I know as much about the Old English baedlings as anyone who reads @baeddel's blog. but this story is roughly 15th-century-ish as the other references suggest. I believe in that period, gender was understood as being more about what you do than expressing some inner essence, but I would need to research a lot more thoroughly.
nevertheless it has been in the oven for long enough, and I wanna make this a year of releasing things rather than sitting on them for years x3
the next story, The General's Worm, is a really nasty one, just undergoing a final editing pass.

Moreover, Caesar was not satisfied to be overlooked at first by Sulla, who was busy with a multitude of proscriptions, but he came before the people as candidate for the priesthood, although he was not yet much more than a stripling. To this candidacy Sulla secretly opposed himself, and took measures to make Caesar fail in it, and when he was deliberating about putting him to death and some said there was no reason for killing a mere boy like him
Plutarch, Caesar
sulla's fight with caesar is extremely funny, but also very Something considering how much of sulla you see reflected in caesar's later actions. breaking news: grown man picks fight with teenager, more at 11.

Writing Tip #1
This is so new, im not used to diving that deep in my process 🤣 but I can see what shakes loose. More or less what would be in my newsletter but I consider yall my most exclusive VIPs so you get everything first 😗
Most of the tips you'll find is stuff I've collected over the years, working with different writers groups, my own research, or many wonderful writing resources other blogs have cobbled together. I'm not gonna do lists like those per se, only because why reinvent the wheel? And also this is stuff that works personally for me.
If you've tried other stuff before that maybe didn't help, these tips may be helpful. If you're not sure where to start, you can always start with these and research what does work for you.
The key is to find what works for you. Writing advice is not a step by step guide, its not a how-to, it's constant research to find what works for you. Because we're all different, we can all learn from each other, and we all have unique stories to share.
So the biggest piece of advice that's been a godsend to me is this: change your font to Comic Sans.
Before you bring out the pitchforks! This isn't something I discovered. Im not taking credit. This is something I saw on a random post and thought, there's no way that shit would work. Like none 🤣 the hell does changing the font do?!
But you know what.....it works. It so fucking works. Idk the science behind it, idk why our brains are like this, but just changing the font to Comic Sans lets your brain relax and you'll start flying through writing.
Maybe because it looks funny to some. Maybe because Times New Roman is usually the standard so Comic Sans seems more informal and like there's less pressure. Idk. Again, not an expert, but all my fics are written in this font and before I know it, hours have gone by and I have a completed draft.
So idk. Maybe try it? Let me know if it works or not 😗

Hi! I found your blog just recently and I love the Vesnaposting - the art, the comics, the gifs from the game, all of it. I've got so many questions:
How did you got yourself interested in this time period? Why Bohemia? Where exactly could the castle be found? Do you plan to connect your story with some "greater events" from that time? Will your OCs travel a bit?
Please, continue with all of this. It looks great and I would also love to play the game one day!
Thank you very much for the questions! I love getting intricate and thought out things to answer, and I'm humbled you like it!
I've been a sort of amateur medievalist for a while now- I can't point specifically to when it started, but it might have been reading Pillars of the Earth as a teenager, or finding out that the town I grew up in had an important courthouse that was closed in the 1300s- that's a scale of time that overwhelmed me then, and still makes me feel a deal of frisson now. The 1200s specifically sit at an intersection of really cool stuff in central europe- it's right before Franziscanism spreads and shakes up the monastic system, Waldensian heretics were prefiguring how the church would later fracture (I feel they resemble specifically the czech utraquists in some of their stylings and beliefs), and the Pope was in open conflict with the holy roman emperor; On the political side, Friedrich II was nearing the end of his reign, and his death would lead to the interregnum, where the empire is effectively without an emperor for years on end; The Popponer dynasty is about to crumble in Austria, and the Lion of Prague Ottokar II Přemýsl is about to add all of Austria to the Bohemian Kingdom, interrupting the ongoing Ostsiedlung (German Eastern Colonization, for those who don't know), all to the backdrop of endless failing crusades. It's just before the Habsburgs gain greater relevance and europe slides into the rennaissance, in my mind putting an end to the "proper" middle ages.
I've been curious about Czechia for a long time; I was too young to really notice when the country joined the EU, but even years later, I remember grumbling that they were going to "ruin" us, by flooding our country with cheap labour or products or somesuch. It's always struck me as odd. That energy ended up getting redirected towards migrants from the near east in the 2010s, but it's stuck with me; Here's a country Austria has, in some form or another, struggled with for centuries, dominated terribly through to the very end of our wretched pitiful attempt at an 'empire,' tried to keep chunks of as recently as 100 years ago, and yet I didn't learn so much as a single thing about it in school. Austrian schooling is dead set on not mentioning a single thing between about 1500 to 1933 (and even then, we often gloss over just *how* enthusiastic a lot of austria was to participate in the holocaust and become part of germany- or how no real denazification took place after the war), and obviously reading any history at all immediately got me hooked on finding out more. History aside, I love the bohemian massif dearly; the rolling hills, deep shadowy forests, little brooks, misty autumns, distant alps, it's one of my favourite regions on earth; I grew up in southern upper austria, but studied near Freistadt, which is where I gathered a lot of reference material for Vesna.
The castle doesn't have an official location, but there is a general area: "north of Freistadt, east of Rožmberk." Here are some rough indications on a modern Vesna era map, a rennaissance map, and google maps:
4. Not to spoil anything, but yes- Franzesca's father, a Bavarian, is a true believer in the "stupor mundi" Frederick II, and the need to "germanize" the backward slavic populations of Bohemia; He detests Saint Václav and forbids castle servants from speaking czech. The timing of the events of Vesna is chosen very specifically to be ironic in this regard- but you'll see when we get there :P
5. Yes, at the very least you will get to see Vesna and friends in the Machlant, Rožmberk and Linz. Franzesca will travel to her family home of Innsbruck and to Normandy, and it's likely more will happen, depending on where the story goes.
Thank you again for the questions! I hope to be working on Vesna for a long time, if it stays interesting :)
