'Comic Yuri Hime' Reveals Cover Artist for 2024

The January 2024 issue of Ichijinsha's Comic Yuri Hime magazine was released on November 17 and revealed the new cover illustrator for the year, Fukahira.

Comic Yuri Hime, the long-running monthly Yuri manga magazine which currently serializes popular works like I'm in Love with the Villainess, Whisper Me a Love Song, and Yuri is My Job, features a different artist on its color illustrations each year. Previous artists include Fly (Chasing After Aoi Koshiba), Rolua, Eri Takenashi (Kannagi), Mebachi, and Shiromizakana (Lucky Star, K-ON!).

Fukahira is primarily known as the character designer behind popular VTubers such as Inugami Korone (hololive) and Shellin Burgundy (NIJISANJI). They also illustrate several light novels such as Juussai no Saikyou by Seiju Amano and are the character artist and primary illustrator of 1000-REKA's recently released Yuri visual novel Hayasaki no Kuroyuri (Early-Blooming Black Lily).

8. What’s an old project idea that you’ve lost interest in

Any of the OC projects I had in early middle school. I had multiple (video game, comic, a DR fangame....) but lost interest in them all rather quickly... I doubt I'll go back to them either, except for maybe re-using past concepts or designs

20. Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy

I'm not sure if there's something like that for me... 🤔

21. Art styles nothing like your own but you like anyways

First one which came to my mind is Rolua, who I'm familiar with thanks to their work on Crymachina. Their art style is so detailed and intricate !

Publisher and developer Alliance Arts, and developers One or EIGHT and WSS playground have announced turn-based strategy game The Great Villainess: Strategy of Lily for PC (Steam). It will launch in January 2024 with English, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese language support.

About

The Great Villainess: Strategy of Lily is a turn-based strategy game. The villainess Scarlet comes back from the guillotine. She meets a girl who knows the tech of streaming and becomes THE first Streamer. Instigate and distract the Imperial Kingdoms’ army and avenge on them.

Story

The duchess of the Imperial Kingdom, Scarlet, was deceived and falsely accused of regicide, the killing of the King. She was sent to the guillotine, but fate arrives in the form of Lily, who holds the secret of the technology to stream and the best aerial warship the Imperial Kingdom possessed.

Story & Characters:

Genre: Dark Fantasy, Action, Battle Royale, Romance

Premise: Shun may seem like an ordinary high school boy but he’s also the 10th child of the king of hell. Seeing as he’s the 10th child, he bascially inherited none of his father’s powers. Wanting to save Sakura, a girl who died and fell to hell due to circumstances that weren’t really her fault, he approaches the 7th child, Nero, to save her. Nero tells him that the only way to save her is to become king. To do this, he must take her place in the battle royale against the top children. Rather than the children fighting each other directly, they instead use ‘pieces’ - souls of villains that fell to hell.

Content Warning: A bit of half-sibling incest. All of the king’s children’s obviously share the same father and this is explicitly stated to not be an issue for romance in hell. Also, spoiler warning but Nero randomly kisses Shun during the climax and of course they are half-siblings. I can see that this will not be an issue for some people but I found it pretty gross.

One of Ayasato’s new releases and sadly I wasn’t all that thrilled with it. I liked the atmosphere and I really enjoyed the inclusion of historical and fictional villains. It reminded me of Fate and was very fun. There’s actually a small ‘further readings’ section at the end of the book with books about the people that were featured which was cool. This volume features Elizabeth Bathory, Shuten Doji, Yonagahime (a character who I had never heard of before this but am now fairly interested in), the snake of eden, Sebastian Moran, and James Moriarty. I liked seeing new interpretations of familiar characters and learning about ones that I hadn’t really heard of before. I also think that the premise is fairly interesting and I think the series has some potential.

Where the volume failed for me was with the characters. The main characters didn’t make much of an impression on me at all. I found them bland at best and hateable at worst. I didn’t care for any of them. Sakura was probably the worst of them because her being saved is Shun’s motivation for the series and I just did not give a damn about her so I did not give a damn about whether Shun succeeded or not. We’re only shown her through flashbacks in Shun’s eyes and it wasn’t enough for me to get to know her enough to care about her ultimate fate. But Shun and Nero are just as bland and I don’t feel like I got to know either of them well either. I also thought the pacing was poor and it felt quite repetitive. Maybe this would have been better if I read it quicker...

Recommended for: 

Fans of dark fantasies, battle royales, and series that try to create new interpretations of historical and fictional figures.

I don’t care about this series enough to want to read a potential second volume. I don’t care about the characters and the half-sibling incest squicks me out. That being said, if the historical and fictional villains that are involved in the second volume are interesting enough, I might be persuaded to read it.
