Flashback Friday ~ an endearing little piece in Garage Magazine from 17 years ago.

Ah yes… the good old days when what I created lived in limbo between an art museum and a natural history museum. Well... thankfully through the blood, sweat, and tears of those of us at the front lines of this art movement, a niche has been carved out for our bastard progeny. Those of you that have followed my work from its humble beginnings will remember that the tagline on my website back in those days was “I call it art, you can call it whatever you want”. This article was just one of many that pondered the question. I’m happy to report there is no longer a question. Taxidermy has not only been acknowledged as a legitimate medium to create fine art, it’s currently a trend in fine art. #BOOM

Finished fixing up this little guy the other day. He was a gift from my brother, but he was looking a bit rough and needed some cleaning up. I cleaned the dust and debris out of the fur, removed the damaged leather and replaced it with a layer of moss, added some lovely little florals, crystals, and insects (real and paper). Visually, it’s a bit busy, but ya’ll know me with my maximalist aesthetics. 😆 I really like this guy. Its the day before Jesus Christs birthday.. Heres another lie.. "Scitiphus picos: It appears that though diminutive winglike appendages persist this creature has long ago lost its true flight in favour of long strong legs and a leaping form of locomotion. Through what affliction, heavenly curse or natural processes this can be attributed I can only speculate at this point. The feathers that remain serve only to stabilise the creature in the air as it leaps accross the rocks of the Tibetan plateau springing up to 30 yards at a time and landing with uncanny grace on its pad like feet. It feads on flying insects the same as some of the local birds though I have also observed it scurrying on the backs of grasing Yak to pick off the skin parasites there. The call of Scitiphus can be likened to the scraping of rusted metal plates, interspersed with low and resonant "knocks". The volume and frequency of the knocking sound increases when the creature is atop a particularly lousy Yak. Wolpertinger Wednesday ~

A lighthearted and whimsical commission from many moons ago. The infamous “wolpertinger” of Bavarian folklore, only this time with a Northern Minnesota twist. The internet fell in love with this piece back in 2009. Over the years it has appeared on a number of news and entertainment sites across the globe including locales as far away as Brazil, Japan, and Russia. Fifteen years later this charming little character is still popping up in Google searches and warming people’s hearts.

Wolpertingers are a long-standing tradition in German folklore, particularly in Bavaria. These fictional creatures are said to inhabit the deepest, darkest parts of the forest and stories about them have circulated for centuries. Akin to the flying Jackalope of the American Great West, wolpertingers are purportedly the hybrid offspring resulting from the ‘ungodly’ mating of a hare and a deer. Taxidermy mounts of wolpertingers are a big part of the tradition. Mounts served as mascots in German taverns as far back as the early 1800’s, and still do to this day. There is also a long tradition of these mounts being sold as souvenirs in Bavaria. Originally locals sold stuffed wolpertingers to gullible tourists, claiming the mounts were hunting trophies of real animals. These days they are a popular gift shoppe novelty in the region.

Historical illustrations and paintings of wolpertingers traditionally depict them as a hare/rabbit with antlers and wings, sometimes with bird talons replacing their paws. In addition to rabbits, fox were often used to create the taxidermied tavern mascots. Modern mass-produced taxidermy mounts of wolpertingers are usually made with the comparatively inexpensive pelts of muskrats and ground squirrels. I decided my version of a wolpertinger needed a humorous twist that would set it apart from traditional interpretations so I utilized a grey tree squirrel, a species not found in old-school wolpertinger mounts. The remaining animals I used to create my version are traditional components, in this case game bird wings, duck feet, roe deer antlers, and fox fangs.

Finally finished this lovely lady! This was so much work. 😵‍💫 But I’m super happy with how it turned out! Tried some new things here, like the glowing mushroom lights which I made using battery operated fairy lights, Apoxie sculpt, and translucent polymer clay. I don’t think I’m going to sell this one, if just because shipping it would be such an expensive nightmare. But if someone is really interested in it, make me an offer. Until then, she will be hanging proudly in my living room. I have lots of cool things in the works right now. I know I’ve been MIA with my online presence lately and I am going to try to work on that. I have been slacking on putting up listings, etc., but I promise I will have new things up soon! I’ve just been so busy and making lots of changes and trying new things. Kinda giving my shop an expansion and a makeover. Hoping to have my own website up and running soon as well!
