Seeking Rogue Wave Origins
Rogue waves -- rare waves much larger than any surrounding waves -- have long been a part of sailors' tales, but their existence has only been confirmed relatively recently. The exact mechanisms behind them are still a matter of debate. (Image credit: S. Baisch; research credit: A. Toffoli et al.; via APS Physics) Read the full article

Long considered myth, freakishly large rogue waves are very real and can split apart ships and even damage oil rigs. Using 700 years' worth of wave data from more than a billion waves, scientists at the University of Copenhagen and University of Victoria have used artificial intelligence to find a formula for how to predict the occurrence of these maritime monsters. The new knowledge can make shipping safer. Stories about monster waves, called rogue waves, have been the lore of sailors for centuries. But when a 26-meter-high rogue wave slammed into the Norwegian oil platform Draupner in 1995, digital instruments were there to capture and measure the North Sea monster. It was the first time that a rogue had been measured and provided scientific evidence that abnormal ocean waves really do exist. Since then, these extreme waves have been the subject of much study. And now, researchers from the University of Copenhagen's Niels Bohr Institute have used AI methods to discover a mathematical model that provides a recipe for how—and not least when—rogue waves can occur. With the help of enormous amounts of big data about ocean movements, researchers can predict the likelihood of being struck by a monster wave at sea at any given time.

Hey, y’all, it’s Weird Wednesday! Where on some Wednesdays, I blog about weird stuff and give writing prompts.
Today: Rogue Waves: Oceanic Monsters
Rogue waves are single waves or small series of waves which tower over the surrounding sea. Also called freak waves, they’re not tsunamis, which are quite small at sea and grow large only when they hit shallow water. They’re just monstrous, unexpected waves, up to three times the height of the waves around them. Sometimes they’re generated by a storm, and sometimes by an ocean that’s otherwise as calm as can be.
Early study of rogue waves ran into a problem: according to wave models of the time, a wave so much higher than its neighboring waves was physcially impossible. So despite sailors’ eyewitness stories and ships with damage high above the waterline, rogue waves were thought to be a myth.
Another reason for the disbelief was probably because the best evidence was no evidence at all. The thing about seeing something terribly dangerous on the open ocean is that unfortunately, you may not live to tell about it, and that seems to be the case with a lot of suspected rogue waves. Waves big enough to sink ships did, in fact, sink ships, leaving no one to tell the tale.
And then came the Draupner Wave.
Check out the blog post for the whole story and some writing prompts, such as:
The Sinking Dutchman. A whole ship’s worth of people dying suddenly via rogue wave on an otherwise uneventful day would be a good recipe for a ghost story. The ship might reappear on the anniversary of its sinking, (like the Palatine Light), or your story could have a modern ship that picks up a few hundred vintage ghosts every time it passes through certain waters. Might they try to warn the captain or passengers if another rogue wave threatens?

You know the existence of rogue waves is deeply upsetting to me like what do you mean they can justdecide to be 50 feet tall?? No prompting(that we know of) one wave just decides to be that tall and there isn’t anything we can do about it? It’s fucked up really.
#ocean#marine memes#oceanography#rogue waves#if we don’t come to understand them in this life time I’m haunting everyone who works at NOAA#absolute insanity#gone rogue wave edition#I atleast admire their lack of respect for authority

Breaking in Rogue Seas
Many models for forecasting ocean waves simplify the physics by assuming that waves are essentially two-dimensional, like a long breaker heading toward shore. But in the open ocean, waves often come from more than one direction. (Image credit: O. Мороз; research credit: M. McAllister et al.; via Gizmodo) Read the full article

Introducing the adopted son of Jet the Hawk, Rocket the Rooster! 😁
Some info:
Was found as an orphan by Jet when he was very young. He was taken under Jet's wing after being caught trying to steal from the Babylon Rogues. Despite initially being seen as an apprenticeship of sorts, Jet and Rocket eventually grew to see each other as father and son.
He is rivals with Stellar the Hedgehog and is love rivals with Camellia the Cat. Stellar thinks he is super cool, and she has a crush on him. Camellia hates him with a fiery passion. 😂
When he came out, he chose the name "Rocket" to cement his place among the Babylon Rogues.
He was raised to view Sonic (and by extension, Stellar) as rivals/competition. Jet is very happy to get under Sonic's skin by having his son outdo (and potentially romance???) his daughter.
Flirts with Stellar when they compete to try and get the upper hand by distracting her. She is too gullible to recognize he is just doing it to win.
Affectionately called "Rocky" by friends and family.
Both Sonic and Shadow don't like him being around Stellar.
Less of a showboat than Jet, but still has an ego.
Doesn't actually catch feelings for Stellar until she realizes what a dick he is and wrecks his shit. It is the second she kicks him so hard he sees stars that he understands why she is named "Stellar". By that point, of course, Stellar has written him off (much to Camellia's delight).

"Is it this?… What is this?" 🃏
In a room in the Babylon Bandits' hideout under a moonlit night, three people are eagerly awaiting a card game with the last share of the treasure at stake…!
Jet's moment of decision is approaching 🫣
It's fun to hang out with close friends. Let's enjoy the long autumn nights without getting too hot. 🌕
