25 years ago tonight, I went with my father, my friend Ben and (I think) my sister to see “Tomorrow Never Dies”. I specifically remember bemoaning the other release that day, swearing up and down it would end up being a bomb. That “Tomorrow Never Dies” would (obviously) make more money. The other movie? James Cameron’s “Titanic”. Hey, at least I can admit my mistakes: A pretty fun entry in the Bond series with a lot of great set pieces and a killer score by David Arnold (who would go on to score the next 4 Bonds). Roger Spottiswoode - Terror Train (1980) So the guy who was the editor of Straw Dogs, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, Hard Times and The Gambler makes his directing debut with another of those early slashers following on the success of Halloween. This guy would go on to direct such films as Turner and Hooch, Stop! Or Mom Will Shoot, Tomorrow Never Dies and The 6th Day. Haha! So a bunch of really successful crap as well as the pretty good A Street Cat Named Bob. From this CV you can imagine that Terror Train is at least competently directed, and that it is. In fact it has the feel more of a Giallo than a Slasher, with the added gimmick of being set on a moving train, which adds the claustrophobia element to the thing. You also know who the killer is from the beginning, really, you just don't know where he is or what he looks like now, as he keeps changing costumes. In fact in the long tradition of slashers dating back to Hitchcock's Psycho or William Castle's Homicidal you also get some gender-bending thrown into the mix to make it all the more difficult. Jamie Lee Curtis continues her streak of stalker movies after Halloween and Prom Night and is pretty good here, always being the relatable character that you know will probably survive this. The film is also good at fleshing out a bunch of the characters stories, the setting helps as being stuck in a train you manage to fit in a lot of conversation in tight spaces. The cinematography is great and as an added bonus you get a young David Copperfield being his creepy magician self. Better than most slashers of the time it's definitely something to watch if you are into the genre. 22 years ago, I went to see this with my entire family and my friend Ben. I remember thinking this was totally going to blow the other release that day out of the water. I was certain of it. The other film? “Titanic”. Good thinking, nimrod. That being said, I’ve always enjoyed this Brosnan outing. It was at the height of “GoldenEye 64” mania and it capitalized on it. “GoldenEye” (the film), while amazing in it’s own right, didn’t have a score by David Arnold. David Arnold is severely underrated and this film is a major showcase of his talents. Brosnan seems to be more comfortable in this film than in “GoldenEye” but this film is also a tad more ridiculous, which I think works fine it’s advantage. Pryce is a great villain and Yeoh is one of the better Bond women. The film also has some of the best set pieces of the series. Cannot believe it’s been 22 years, good God.
