Brazilian government appoints two new Central Bank directors

Finance Minister Fernando Haddad announced on Monday the names of two new directors of the Central Bank. 

Paulo Picchetti, an economist at the Fundação Getulio Vargas think tank, will oversee international affairs and corporate risk management, while Rodrigo Alves Teixeira, a career Central Bank employee, will be the new director of relationships, citizenship, and conduct supervision.

The two nominees will replace Fernanda Guardado and Maurício Moura, whose terms end in December. With the new names, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will have appointed four of the nine members of the Central Bank board. 

The other nominees of the current government took office in July: Ailton Aquino took over the supervisory board, and former deputy finance minister Gabriel Galípolo took over monetary policy — a key position in the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee.

Bogotá recibe el Sudamericano de los Juveniles

Por segunda vez en el historial -la anterior fue en 1990, en el estadio El Campín- Bogotá recibe el Campeonato Sudamericano u20. Se trata de la 45a. edición de esta competencia, antes conocida como "Campeonato Sudamericano Juvenil" y que tuvo su origen en 1959, proyectando desde entonces a los "valores del futuro" del atletismo de nuestra región. Las pruebas ahora se realizarán entre el viernes 19 y domingo 21 de mayo en la pista sintética del complejo El Salitre, en la capital colombiana. Una de las atracciones es la presencia del ascendente sprinter brasileño, procedente del estado de Parana, Renán Correa de Lima Gallina (FOTO), recordman sudamericano de la categoría en los 200 metros llanos. El equipo local, por su cuenta, tiene a varios de los integrantes del plantel mundialista en Cali 2022, y desde allí también proviene la uruguaya Manuela Rotundo, medallista de la gran cita en lanzamiento de jabalina. I'd give yall resources in English but you can probably find that on your own pretty easily and it's trickier to find pages in a language you don't speak so here ya go.

Some notes:

If you uh have a brazilian oc they probably have two or more last names. Here you get both your parents' surnames, usually the mother's first and the father's last. When people choose which surname they are gonna pass down to their children they usually choose the last one (read: the father's name) so they are passed down patrilinearly (if that's an actual word). In theory you can choose whatever surname to pass down tho there's nothing stopping you.

Then we get to people who want to pass down both their surnames and that's how we end up with people with three surnames (like two from their mom's and one from their dad's) or four (both parents' full surnames) or honestly more. I don't know many people with more than three and the vast majority is two but like. I've heard of a girl with like seven surnames once.

Also it's kind of uncommon but some people (mostly woman i think) when they marry also take their spouse's surname and add it last to their own. My grandma did that if I recall well.

-> Bonus: Name lists in alphabetical order do not take the surname in consideration like yall in the US do. If your name is Antonia Zigar you are first in the list and if you are Zylon Almeida you get last. Your first name is the one that counts. Unless there's like, Amanda Brandão and Amanda Ramos, where we'll get Brandão first and Ramos after in said list.

An investigation by the Federal Police states that Abin (Brazilian Intelligence Agency) illegally monitored during Jair Bolsonaro's government (PL) Supreme Court ministers, parliamentarians, and journalists. According to the PF, the clandestine operation targeted Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is the rapporteur of investigations aimed at Bolsonaro supporters, Luís Roberto Barroso, Luiz Fux, and Dias Toffoli.

A Câmara dos Deputados aprovou, nesta segunda-feira (9), o regime de urgência para o projeto de lei que torna obrigatória a instalação de detectores de metais e cercas elétricas nas entradas de creches e escolas públicas e privadas em todo o país. A medida visa reforçar a segurança no ambiente escolar e prevenir possíveis atos de violência. De autoria da deputada federal Silvye Alves (União-GO) e do deputado Rodrigo Valadares (União-SE), a proposta busca coibir práticas delituosas e restabelecer a segurança nas instituições de ensino. Com a aprovação da urgência, o projeto poderá ser votado diretamente no plenário, sem a necessidade de tramitação nas comissões temáticas da Casa. O presidente da Câmara, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), tem demonstrado interesse em acelerar a votação de propostas relacionadas à segurança pública, especialmente nesta reta final de 2024. A inclusão do projeto na pauta reflete essa prioridade, alinhando-se a outras iniciativas que visam fortalecer a proteção dos cidadãos. A implementação de detectores de metais e cercas elétricas nas escolas é vista como uma medida preventiva para evitar a entrada de armas e outros objetos perigosos nos ambientes educacionais.
