R.O.T.O.R. -- AGAIN!
Even ripoffs can be beautiful.
I am writing about R.O.T.O.R., neither for the first time nor the last, because something new strikes me about this startling movie every time I see it. Its amazing premise, which amply rips off THE TERMINATOR and JUDGE DREDD (but not ROBOCOP, oddly, which began shooting after R.O.T.OR., also in Dallas) provides fertile ground for all sorts of useful interpretation. This time I was most struck by the fact that R.O.T.O.R. is all about jobs and going to work.
The story concerns "police scientist" Captain Coldyron (cold-iron) who has invented the Robotic Officer Tactical Operations Research/Reserve, a T-800 type of android made out of a "self-teaching alloy" that can kick anybody's ass. Coldyron resigns in a huff when his boss conspires with local politicians to rush the lawbot to market, and the project races forward dysfunctionally until R.O.T.O.R. inevitably busts lose and starts killing people for minor mischief. Coldyron hooks up with the robot's coauthor Dr. Steel (female bodybuilder Jayne Smith who is like something out of Crying Freeman, which I mean as the highest compliment) to hunt their creation down and destroy it.
Coldyron is played by Richard Gesswein, who was also created in a lab.
That might sound pretty action-packed, but in execution R.O.T.O.R. is heavily focused on the drudgery of daily life. Enormous amounts of time are spent walking through parking lots, traversing the atria of hotels, finding parking, being seated in restaurants, and most of all, spending hours and hours at work, making countless phone calls. You have never seen so many people on the phone in a movie in your entire life. There's work phones, home phones, payphones, and even CB radios. At times it feels as if you may never see more than one person on the same set again. On the phones, people say things to each other that have already been said earlier in the movie if not earlier in the same scene, if not earlier in the same monologue. In the scene where Coldyron learns that R.O.T.O.R. has gone rogue, he delivers this incredible screed during one of THREE calls that he makes in a row:
"Its last program was prime directive... Prime directive to our ROTOR unit is judge and execute. It stops felons, judges the crime, and executes sentence. Justice served, COD. You call the Senator and you tell him ROTOR walked through a busload of nuns to get to a jaywalker, with malice towards no one. It won't stop. It wasn't ready. Its brain functions are incomplete. It can't think twice, can't reason, can't change its prime directive. It's like a chainsaw set on frappe..."
It begins to feel as if he will never stop reiterating whatever he (and others) just said, and this is not the only such example.
Most of these calls, like all of the activity in the movie, are focused on jobs. Coldyron calls his girlfriend first thing in the morning to tell her that he is getting ready for work, and to ask her if she is also getting ready to go to work at her own job. He promises that "if you're a good girl and go to work" then he will grill steaks at her house later. When he goes out to buy charcoal for the reward steaks he stumbles upon two creeps robbing the store and trying to take a hostage--a woman who stops the crime with several karate kicks, to whom he says "Hey lady, you want a job?" Meanwhile at the police robot lab, a scientist slaves away while complaining about the impossible new R.O.T.O.R. deadline as the comic relief security bot whines, sighs, and says "One of these days I'm gonna quit this job!" (Later on he actually does) Once R.O.T.O.R. has escaped we meet the Linda Hamilton of this movie (Margaret Trigg), who is having a vicious fight in the car with her fiance because she wants to get a job; the fiance wants to forgo the "barbaric ritual" of the wedding and just be automatically married to a woman who will not embarrass him by getting a job. Finally he concedes, "Elope with me tonight and I'll help you get a job after the honeymoon," but it's too late for all that because he's speeding and about to get killed by R.O.T.O.R.
For extra job-related realism there is workplace harassment in the form of a guy who tries to fuck his colleague by describing ancient execution methods and who calls her a white supremacist for turning him down (he says he's Native American, she says he's not, I don't know the right answer because this is the actor's only credit--and actually he's uncredited for the role, though he is acknowledged for composing the movie's primitive synth soundtrack which I kind of enjoy). It's also worth mentioning that the comedy droid is a real robot with a job, according to iMDB (sadly there is not a wealth of info on this movie):
"Willard the Robot is played by APD2, a robot purchased in 1986 by the police department of the Town of Addison, a northern suburb of Dallas, for $17,750 (approximately $41,000 in 2018 dollars). APD2/Willard performed public relations duties and was tapped to lead the Christmas parade in Addison that year. His contributions to actual law enforcement and his subsequent whereabouts are unknown. "As quoted from 'theoldrobots' website; 'Officer Willi from 1985 - This 21st Century Robotics robot was operated by remote control, showed videos about public safety, and was used in teaching important safety topics such as stranger awareness, traffic safety, and much more..'"
Coldyron is actually a very good prototype of the modern tech mogul who has way too much time on his hands and whose existence is mainly composed of heroic fantasies about himself, whether he is molding the future face of law enforcement, or dicking around on his enormous ranch where he lamely practices his lasso technique on tree stumps before blowing them up with dynamite. At the office he demands "hydrogenated wheat germ and dessicated liver" which boosts his handball game, and I thought, jesus christ I think I've worked for this guy. Coldyron is *I think* the hero of this movie but I'm never sure how much you're really supposed to like him; when his girlfriend sends him out for charcoal so he can cook her reward steaks, he goes to a mini mart and just starts looking for trouble, harassing minorities and flashing his gun. It's like, this is the reason there are loitering laws, but naturally they don't apply when you're a rich cop.
Someone please make these stickers!
The best way to understand R.O.T.O.R. is through the knowledge that director and co-writer Cullen Blaine worked on a variety of popular cartoon shows during what they call "the dark age of animation". First of all, there are scenes in this movie whose aesthetic, humor, and internal logic only begin to make sense if you imagine them taking place in an episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles--and actually much if not all of the dialog was dubbed by a whole other cast due to problems with getting the stars back for ADR, creating a whole other layer of literal cartoonishness. But the period in which Cullen Blaine created R.O.T.O.R. and designed many children's shows was dominated by what's called "limited animation" which I almost don't even have to describe. It's all in the name, the goal was to do things as cheaply as possible while turning out dozens of episodes per season. Part of the problem was, as with all things, Ronald Reagan, whose deregulation activities defanged measures to make sure children's programming was not just a steady stream of hard sell marketing. Under Reagan, the requirement for some portion of programs to be educational became so easy to meet and manipulate that animation studios were compelled to crank out zillions of Trojan horse toy ads with glib moral declarations tacked on. (I think I understand this correctly, I'm sure @bogleech has better material on the subject) Animators are a historically abused lot with a sad history of failed strikes, and I'm just extrapolating here, but I bet it's reasonable to guess that R.O.T.O.R. reflects the filmmaker's experiences in the grueling cartoon mines. The brutal sacrifice of quality to speed, the hostile work environments, and the endless, redundant calls and meetings, all smack of a script by someone who has had a very bad job.
"We've all got plenty of time to figure out what this means to each one of us," Coldyron sagely concludes at the end of his misadventure. Obviously I am still working on what it means to me, since this is the fourth or fifth time I've seen this movie and (at least?) the second time I'm writing about it. I will say that while the film I have just described sounds intolerably boring--I mean, a whole movie about rat race drudgery with the fewest and least convincing action sequences ever--but believe me, it is not boring. R.O.T.O.R. is constantly surprising and fascinating, with weirdly vivid imagery and pages and pages of the strangest dialog you will hear anywhere. Just watch the movie and let it shock you. You'll have plenty of time to figure out what it means to you later.

Do you have any recommendations for TTRPGs that emulate JRPGs well, or have a very JRPG-like setting? I find the unself-conscious mixing of fantasy, sci-fi, and steampunk elements that's commonplace in JRPGs very appealing, as well as the inventive combat and advancement mechanics (for reference I am playing the first Trails in the Sky game right now and I am enjoying it very much).
You've got several distinct questions there, though you may not realise it, and I'm going to tackle them in order.
First, with respect to emulating JRPGs and JRPG-like settings at the tabletop, it's hard to go wrong with, well, actual tabletop JRPGs. While English localisations of Japanese tabletop roleplaying games are admittedly thin on the ground, there are a few of them out there, including official translations of Double Cross, Golden Sky Stories, Ryuutama – Natural Fantasy Roleplay, Shinobigami, and Tenra Bansho Zero, as well as the odd partial fan-translation, of which Meikyuu Kingdom and Nechronica are probably the most notable. (No direct links to the latter two because fan-translation is technically piracy, though I'm sure you can chase them down on your own if sufficiently inclined!) There are a lot of cultural assumptions about what an RPG is and how it ought to work that aren't going to come across in an Anglophone author's attempt at genre emulation, so you'd be well served to go straight to the source.
(I vaguely recall that there are also a couple of Japanese indie RPG authors self-publishing their works in English via itch.io, though it’s late and names escape me at the moment – if anyone reading this can point us in the right direction, please do!)
Second, with respect to emulating the steampunk science-fantasy settings that Western fandoms often associate with JRPGs (though they're far from universal within the genre – their apparent prevalence is more a reflection of what gets localised than of the genre as a whole), the above-cited Tenra Bansho Zero will give you that in spades, though it's also one of the most rules-heavy entries on that list. If you have a specific desire to play in a game where the party consists of a cursed samurai, a child mecha pilot, a Shinto MiB, an oni Jedi knight, and Robocop, that it'll do.
If you'd prefer something less crunch-heavy, or more American-style in its game design approach, you might alternatively have a look at Anima Prime. It's not a localised title, but its lighter and more familiar approach may be an easier sell for your group than dropping Tenra Bansho Zero's seven hundred page rulebook on them. Aesthetically, it sits somewhere near the RWBY-meets-Final Fantasy XIII intersection.
Finally, with respect to emulating the combat of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky specifically, that’s a tough one – I don’t think any Japanese tabletop RPGs with proper grid-based tactical combat have workable English localisations at the moment, even taking fan-translations into account. In terms of non-localised games, I’d probably go with something like Valor; it’s basically an anime-themed Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition clone, but then, most games that focus tightly on grid-based tactical combat are to varying degrees these days – D&D4E is extremely good at what it does, the protestations of certain vocal grognards who don’t approve of what it does notwithstanding.

"Caramel macchiato? Did you remember the chocolate chips?"
"And- the whipped cream on top..." "And this is exactly why after I'm doing drinking this, I'm going to install a Wi-Fi module in you. You know, for something that's been offline since the days of Backstreet Boys, 'NSYNC and Britney Spears, you still catch on pretty quick! Then again, that's your my favorite floofy Motor City murderbot. Good boy!"
"-Look Rebecca, that's dessert, not coffee. I should have kept my muzzle shut about that combination years ago."
"Your point, Officer Prower?"
"Nothing, nothing at all Professor Chambers."
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"

Resident Evil x RoboCop AU where a prototype 'RoboCop 2000' or RC-2000 is developed and assigned to Raccoon City as an attempt for OCP to recover its flagging fortunes after 'RoboCop 2' and 'RoboCop: Rogue City', using a critically injured anthropomorphic fox Detroit patrolman as the basis.
Compared to the original, the RC-2000 has a full-fledged AI modeled on its template containing his full range of memories, skills, emotive profile and the like. The underlying technology is also six years newer and the signature Beretta 93R sidearm is upgraded to a .45 ACP variant. A second 93R is also included and the newer operating system contains multi-targeting capability similar to that of 'RoboCable' from RoboCop: Prime Directives.
On arrival in Raccoon City, Security Concepts placed the RC-2000's upkeep under the responsibility of RPD STARS Bravo Team medic Rebecca Chambers.
Taking over the rear security role from Rebecca, the RC-2000 ultimately was instrumental to a different outcome in Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil 1, resulting in:
A cohesive sweep of the Ecliptic Express, Umbrella Executive Training Center and the Spencer Mansion with Bravo Team remaining together increasing survivability.
The detainment of Dr. William Birkin while en route to a meeting Wesker.
Wesker's perma-death.
The RC-2000 being damaged in a confrontation with the Tyrant, prompting Rebecca to leave Raccoon City after the raid in order to further her career, but also to make an effort to repair the robot, who she formed an attachment to.
Rebecca took over his 1992 Ford Taurus SHO patrol car as her own personal vehicle, removing the police equipment but retaining the coloration and his RPD unit callsign (308) on the side.
This was successful as of 2014 before the events of Vendetta with rumor being that she woke him up with a rather terrible piano rendition of the Moonlight Sonata.
Other Trivia:
His name is supposedly Miles Prower and his birthday is recorded as being October 16, 1980, with a record of him graduating from Wayne State University in 1996 with a criminal justice degree and a minor in physics.
He gets very flustered when she calls him a 'good boy'.
Rumor is that Miles is the one who put Rebecca on her signature caramel macchiato with chocolate chips and whipped cream.

Who would win in a fight to the death?
Info:
Robocop: From the 1987 film "Robocop". A cyborg man with enhanced reflexes, speed and strength, visual and auditory capabilities. He also has an arsenal of weapons such as a 9mm handgun, an assault cannon, a rocket launcher, a machine gun, explosives, and the ability to interface with any data port. His weaknesses come from his three (four) prime directives: Help civilians whenever possible (which prevents him from harming civilians with no crime record), Non-lethality and presumption of innocence, and Inability to harm a police officer (And OCP employees).
Terminator: From the 1984 film "The Terminator". A cyborg sent back in time with the objective to kill a woman named "Sarah Connor". Strengths include enhanced reflexes, speed, and strength. Self-healing skin, ability to function without limbs, withstand 20th-century guns, blunt force, explosions, and the ability to learn and adapt. Weaknesses include lava/molten metal, and the ability to learn the "value of human life", thus ending his need to complete his objective.

OPEN RP | Muse: Robocop
The city was as safe as it could be, but even so crime was always hiding in every corner. What he didn't expect, and most others as well, was that the highest of crime was given directly from the top. An official that held so much power and charisma over many beneath them. This was an individual that his old prime directives could not allow him to proceed with any kind of arrest.
So, this is where he found himself, now, kneeling on the ground in pain and agony over trying to do what he was meant to do; to protect and serve. That pain riddled throughout his mind, spiraling into limbs that were no longer his own, and would never be. He had thought he was free from these directives. Thought he was free. Yet, the reality of the situation is that some were still hidden, deep within his programming.
Murphy tried to resist, holding his weapon up with a weak grip, aiming it at the individual as best he could. That sight of his was static-y and blurred, and he would not be able to make a perfect shot.
This was wrong.

"You fire me and I'll make more noise than two skeletons makin' love in a tin coffin, brother."
I liked the part with the Mr. Coffee Jr.
Holy shit. This movie was practically incomprehensible. I mean the plot was simple, but all the dialogue was confusing gibberish, the editing and pacing were horrid, the tone was all over the place, and the ending was laughably stupid.
R.O.T.O.R. (Robotic Officer Tactical Operation Research, a backronym if ever I've seen one) was basically an evil RoboCop knockoff that moved under the power of "a prime directive" instead of "gears and motors", and was about the least intimidating antagonist imaginable. It just sort of slowly walked at people in its stupid leather uniform, showing no emotion on its face 90% of the time, then spent the other 10% getting comically angry at the inanimate objects it kept tripping over and growling like an animal for some reason.
It was repeatedly described as the perfect law enforcer, despite that fact that all it actually did was chase a random woman for days over a traffic stop, and occasionally fall to the ground because a loud noise happened in its general vicinity. A couple of times it used some sort of magic time reversal, scene reconstruction power to track her when it couldn't possibly have tracked her.
Not one person in this movie could naturally deliver a single line of dialogue, let alone act. The incredibly named Barret Coldyron (Richard Gesswein) had negative charisma, and seemed to move and speak in slow motion. He narrated the whole movie like it was a noir thriller, which it most certainly was not, speaking over shots of bright sunny days to the accompaniment of truly bizarre soundtrack choices.
When Dr. Steele (Jayne Smith) was introduced, any hope I briefly held that this random big buff lady would be cool was dashed the moment she spoke. She then accomplished basically nothing, and her pointless death was literally just not acknowledged by anybody.
Still, at least she died in combat. Coldyron was just shot in the back with a shotgun in the last two minutes, rendering everything that happened up to that point meaningless. They even tried to set up a sequel by introducing his meathead nephew or whatever (and bringing Jayne Smith back as R.O.T.O.R. II), literally seconds before the movie ended.
Throw in a few needlessly racist and sexist scenes, add a good dose of unironic fascist rhetoric about exterminating homeless drug addicts for the good of society, and this utter mess of a movie is just barely worth watching for unintentional comedic value alone.
I don't think I can stress enough how awful R.O.T.O.R. is. A bonus half-star for Jayne Smith's arms.

So yes we went to see the new Horror movie Megan or M3GAN as it is officially spelled. I was waiting a while for this one to come out I think it was delayed at some point and would come out later this year (like February?) but it came out early this month (January 6th) The trailers looked cool and being I do like robot things so it was a must see.
The basic story of the movie is this little girl named Cady (played by iolet McGraw) who is on her way to a ski trip with her parents when they get into a horrible car crash and her parents are killed. She then goes to live with her her Gemma (played by Allison Williams) who is a brilliant roboticist who is working at a toy company building animatronic toys but is also working on a separate project which she thinks will revolutionize the toy industry and the world in the process. So after spending some time with her niece and seeing how she is struggling emotionally she introduces her to the secret project called M3GAN a somewhat self-aware AI powered android in the shape of a little girl similar to Cady. The 2 become inseparable and Cady's mood become positive once again. After reviling M3GAN to her company and securing funding for a full product launch Gemma brings M3GAN home to live with her and Cady in order to test her more in the world being the more time M3GAN spends with Cady the more she learns to be a better friend and this could apply to other versions of M3GAN that can be produced. While living with them Gemma tells M3GAN her only goal is to protect Cady from any physical or emotional harm and that is where things start to go wrong as M3GAN starts to eliminate things and people that might hurt Cady.
Now as for the movie itself Its excellent!! I absolutely loved it and think it is the first great movie of 2023.
I also feel that it kinda grapples with things that are happening now in real life with the sharp rise and adoption of AI in alot of things now and I do believe androids like M3GAN will actually be in the near future.
Now thing I'm curious about and I think the went over this quickly about "safe guards" but while watching this I couldn't help but think did they code in something like Isaac Asimov's "Three Laws of Robotics"? I mean even someone like RoboCop had his "Prime Directives" I mean I would think it would be important to have something like that in there. but then again we are dealing with what I think is more of a unrestrained and unrestricted AI that is free to do as it pleases becasue you don't want to hinder its learning.
I thought the acting in this was great especially from Amie Donald who actually plays the character of M3GAN and how they brought that character to life is really cool and expertly done.
Everything it pretty great in this movie from the music, the story and the production design. I have to say I do highly recommend going to see this. Its creepy and fun and does have a lil bit of everything for everyone but yeah I highly recommend it! and always remember: 'M3GAN' Is Your Friend 'Til the End.

"RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop" (2023)
Tuesday, August 29th, 2023 (22:22) JEFELEN has been a vehement fan of "Robocop" since its release in 1987.
Arguably, I was rather too young to be watching content of this nature at that stage in life, but in all sincerity, that's another topic of conversation for another time. While much of what this film judiciously has to offer inevitably went over my youthful head, I was nevertheless enthralled by the ruthless technological world presented, and it undeniably influenced my own creativity at a profound level.
So very much more than 'just another inane '80s action movie', this uncompromising science-fiction classic delivers caustic social-commentary with biting satirical wit and steely resolve, played out in a prophetic masterstroke that subversively delves into pertinent contemporary themes of toxic masculinity, the cultural permeation of trivial infotainment, mass media editorialisation, corporate politics, the commercial privitisation of medicine, militarisation of the police force, an industrialisation of narcotics production… does any of this sound remotely familiar in today's day and age? Hell, the way I see it, all we're really short of here and now is half man, half machine law enforcement! Another two decades, and we'll get there, no doubt…
Given the deep impact that this movie undeniably had on me, then, when I was offered the opportunity to serve as Associate Producer on "RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop", an exhaustive four-part documentary series on the making of this seminal entertainment franchise, I simply could not pass it up. Co-directed by Christopher Griffiths & Eastwood Allen, with production overseen by Cult Film Screenings™, Dead Mouse Productions™, & Red Rock Entertainment™, this immersive four-hour behind-the-scenes journey features interviews with over sixty key cast and crew, offering a unique, comprehensive, and fully explorative scene-by-scene retrospective like none previously attempted. The first episode, "Destination: Delta City", with a runtime of sixty-nine minutes, is now available to U.S. markets courtesy of the Screambox™ streaming service:

BREAK!!**
Wednesday, August 30th, 2023 (22:22) Here's a visual breakdown of what to expect from Screambox™ over the course of the month to follow:
Tuesday, September 5th, 2023 (22:22) While I had hoped to be able to provide direct link information for each successive release, being region-blocked as I presently am, this unfortunately shall not be possible here...
That being said, I can regardless publicise that our Creation of Robocop retrospective continues with the seventy-eight minute second episode, "Verhoeven's Mantra", now being available on Screambox™ and other aforementioned platforms. #RoboDocContinues #VerhoevensMantra
Tuesday, September 12th, 2023 (22:22) True to schedule, "Blood, Sweat, & Steel", the third episode in this revealing series, has been released to Screambox™ (and all outsourced streaming platforms).
In this installment, the resilient cast and crew relive the Golden Era of hands-on, practical filmmaking in the 1980s. If you're like me, and you're a fan of Phil Tippett and/or Tippett Studio™ (especially), then this is a chapter for you! #RoboDocContinues #BloodSweatAndSteel
Tuesday, September 19th, 2023 (22:22) The Robocop Documentary series ultimately reaches its conclusion with the release of "Murphy and the Machine", the culmination of some five years tirelessly seeking a screen interview with the otherwise reluctant lead actor of this movie classic. But true to the rule, dogged perseverance pays off! As has been presented here, a cinematic icon is unleashed upon the world, creating an indelible legacy with lasting memories for all involved in its production.
So concludes Season 1. Will there be a second season? Only the Future can say for certain... #RoboDocConcludes #MurphyAndTheMachine
Tuesday, September 26th, 2023 (22:22) With the complete first season now available to U.S. streaming audiences, now is a good time to retrospectively take stock. Here is a statement from the producers:
"The feedback for ROBODOC so far has blown us away, and with that we’d like to thank the truly magnificent "RoboCop" interviewees who are featured throughout the four-part series for making this all possible.
We’re incredibly appreciative of all sixty-six cast & crew members who were so generous with their time to discuss making the movie and were willing to sit down with our team of overly excitable filmmakers/RoboCop nerds to share first-hand stories from their experiences on the original "RoboCop" -- THE film we all love, admire, re-enact, and quote at any given opportunity.
So one more time…
Thank YOU for your co-operation.”

Sunday, October 1st, 2023 (22:22) October 1st has been designated #InternationalMusicDay, and in acknowledgement of such, I feel it appropriate to showcase the soundtrack of a particular Robocop Documentary. In addition to the dedicated Sean Schafer Hennessy score, this soundtrack includes original tracks from such contemporary synthwave artists as Arcade High, Biodrive, BLOOD + CHROME, Kalax, Lazerhawk, Lost Years, Meteor, Neon Nox, New Arcades, Occams Laser, Protector 101, Sayak Striker, Shredder 1984, Street Cleaner, Timecop1983, Toxxify, and Waveshaper (among others). As of yet, no album has been released, but one hopes this is to change in future -- in the meantime, it's just another reason to watch the series...!
Sunday, October 2nd, 2023 (22:22) I'm pleased to announce that "RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop" has now been launched to the U.K. market, this time courtesy of distributor Icon Film™, with the regional release of "Destination: Delta City", the first episode of this docu-series. I'm not so pleased to confess, however, that I'm presently UNABLE to source the specific IFC™ weblink, despite several painstaking hours of effort, owing to being personally based within a region-blocked territory...

It was a complete accident. An attempt to use Chaos Control to get Maria Robotnik off of the ARK in 2104.
But young Shadow's mistake would end up having far reaching implications as he managed to pull one of the most formidable heroes to his side. A Tails from a later time, one that had been mortally injured and transformed into what would be known as a VX-01 Vulpinroid.
His task is clear. To protect Shadow and Maria so that they can get clear of Space Colony ARK.
Against him is a renegade special operations force from the United Federation known as GUN.
And what they don't know is that Tails isn't just fighting for what's right. He's fighting for his own existence as Maria would be the one to convert him.

SCREAMBOX Original four-part docuseries RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop will premiere on August 29. New hour-long episodes will follow weekly through September 19 on SCREAMBOX.
Featuring exclusive insight from stars Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Ronny Cox, Ray Wise, and Kurtwood Smith, director Paul Verhoeven, writers Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner, special effects legend Phil Tippett, and more, RoboDoc offers an in-depth look at the making and impact of the trailblazing 1987 dystopian action classic.
Part man, part machine, all cop, RoboCop burst onto the scene as the cinematic landscape began to shift and artificial intelligence was capturing the public's imagination. The boundary-pushing film spawned an unlikely franchise that includes two sequels, an animated series, and a Hollywood remake, along with comic books, video games, toys, and merchandise galore.
RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop is co-directed by Chris Griffiths and Eastwood Allen and produced by Gary Smart. The trio previously collaborated on Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story, Pennywise: The Story of IT, and You're So Cool, Brewster: The Story of Fright Night, all of which are available on SCREAMBOX.
Episode one, "Destination Delta City," streams on August 29. Orion Pictures assembles a magnificent cast and crew who, unbeknownst to them, have signed up for a turbulent and career-defining ride.
Episode two, "Verhoeven’s Mantra," streams on September 5. Notoriously demanding mad-genius director Paul Verhoeven pushes the envelope and many people’s buttons with the unprecedented shooting conditions.
Episode three, "Blood, Sweat & Steel," streams on September 12. The resilient cast and crew relive the golden era of hands-on, practical filmmaking in the 1980s.
Episode four, "Murphy & The Machine," streams on September 19. A cinematic icon is unleashed to the world, creating an indelible legacy with lasting memories for those involved in its production.
“We’ve crafted something together to incorporate visuals and sound in an effort to immerse viewers into the world of '80s filmmaking and offer something completely unique to the ‘making of’ format," explains Allen.
"As a fan of RoboCop for the past 30 years, this project has been a labor of love for me, and I can’t wait to share this unique project with the fans, especially those who have stood by us all these years," adds Griffiths.
RoboDoc joins SCREAMBOX’s extensive library of genre documentaries, including Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story, Living with Chucky, Scream, Queen: My Nightmare on Elm Street, Pennywise: The Story of IT, Just Desserts: The Making of Creepshow, Leviathan: The Story of Hellraiser, Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary, You're So Cool, Brewster: The Story of Fright Night, and Who Done It: The Clue Documentary.
