i don’t have a ton of recs leaping to mind, but i do have some!

first, i’d be remiss if i didn’t rec The Long Way Home by itsnatalie, now one of my all-time favorite fics and an absolute treat if you’re looking for something plotty and satisfying that takes a deep dive into jason’s psyche. i mean, this is a journey through a sentient labyrinth shaped by jason and tim’s trauma. just. trust me, give this one a read.

i asked my resident jason character study enjoyer @cairoscene, who highly recommends Stargazer by lemonadegarden for jason trauma and healing and a really satisfying jason & bruce dynamic.

i’ll also toss in Identity by Miles_2_Go, which sort of fits the bill because it’s a red robin arc au where tim also gets dunked in the pit, and jason is the one who finds him and helps him deal with the effects—so the jason pov definitely also grapples with his own experiences re: the green juice.

i also think How Fine You Look When Dressed In Rage by ebjameston might be of interest! it’s a hell of a good plotty fic dealing with jason’s return to gotham, also featuring renegade!dick and identity shenanigans. (as a heads up, unlike most of my recs this does not have good dad bruce; usually that’s not what i gravitate toward in a longfic, but i really like this one, especially for the jason and dick characterization.)

Sometimes I am just so tired of Modern AU Wei Ying still being an orphan and then I come back to this story and sigh relieved. I am so glad Netrixie blessed us with this story where Wei Ying got to grow up with his parents in America and there's immortals around and one of them... Well, that's the myterious Wanderer, Lan Wangji, and of course, Wei Ying can't help but feel a certain pull towards him and on a whim, he travels to China and eventually gets to meet the elusive immortal. I absolutely adore this story and chapter three, which is from Lan Zhan's perspective, made me bawl my eyes out. Excerpt: “What the fuck,” he whispered again, because, really— how pathetic was he, that he’d dreamed about someone he didn’t know twice now— and that someone was an immortal, who probably wouldn’t even bother to look at Wei Ying if they met in real life— Wei Ying thumped his head on his knees and sighed, then tilted his head to the side as his mother came out on the porch. She leaned against the door and studied him, and Wei Ying patted the spot next to him. Cangse Sanren came and sat, then pulled Wei Ying into her side. “You okay?” she asked, and Wei Ying shrugged. “You only come out here when you can’t sleep.” Wei Ying shook his head against his mother’s shoulder. “Been having trouble with it recently.” “Ah,” she said, “lots on your mind, I guess.” His mother ran her hand over his hair and Wei Ying melted into the touch, relaxing as the silence turned peaceful. “Can I help at all?” Wei Ying hesitated— should he tell his mother? Or would she— rightly, honestly— think he was crazy too? His hesitation was enough, because his mother laughed gently. “You don’t have to tell me,” she assured, and Wei Ying relaxed again. “If you need anything, your father and I are always here for you.” “Thanks, mom,” Wei Ying muttered into her shoulder, and Cangse Sanren turned sideways and pulled him into a stronger hug.

Excellent recent read: transmuter, by WithLoweredVoices

One of my favorite types of fics is the kind that creates a new setting and scenario for the characters but keeps all the emotional beats (and sometimes similar story arcs) true to canon and that’s definitely the case with this work.

If you are looking for something with exquisite emotions, character insights, and beautiful WangXian moments, hurry up and go read this one.

I love me a good time-travel, do-over work that digs deep into the flaws and mistakes of the characters in the original timeline and explores the motivations in a way that is true to the spirit of the characterizations provided in the source material and includes plausible conjecture for those actions when not explicitly provided in canon based on an understanding of human nature. This is a very good option from naqaashi!

If you can’t take any criticism of your favorites (cough JC, LXC, NMJ) without considering the possible validity of those flaws explored, this won’t make you happy to read, but if you like to think about why JC doesn’t deny his role in the siege of Burial Mounds, why LXC might lose his brother’s trust, why NMJ is a hypocrite, when looking at the things that need fixing or preventing in the do-over timeline and want to see how differently things might play out, this is most definitely one you’ll want to read.

RenFaire fan or not, Faire thee well by Scrippio is a gem!

I love, love, love Scrippio’s modern wangxian fics and can’t choose a favorite, but A: this one was delightful and B: you should just work your way through the rest of their works. You won’t be disappointed if you love niche (but not too niche that they’re “precious,” if you know what I mean), perfectly plotted, character true pieces of fiction.

I would love to shout out some of my favorite bits, but then that would ruin the surprise/delight for you once you’re reading — just give them a try!
