Sly5thAve - Liberation - leading a whole orchestra on his new album
‘Liberation’ is the third solo LP from composer, arranger, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Sly5thAve. Layered with orchestral arrangements, jazz improvisation and Hip-Hop production, ‘Liberation’ is an accomplished record of courage, musical conviction, and growth. Known for his sophisticated compositions, Sylvester Uzoma Onyejiaka II AKA Sly5thAve’s first experiences with large scale arranging were with the Club Casa Chamber Orchestra and recording instrumental covers of popular modern songs. Notably, his orchestral tribute to Dr. Dre, ‘The Invisible Man,’ garnered widespread praise and attention, even earning the admiration of Dr. Dre himself. Through these recordings Sly5thAve felt he had found a way to make people connect with orchestral music; “I’ve long felt orchestras around the world are inaccessible to most people – whether it be the programming or the cost, or the location”. The LP is Sly5thAve’s first full album of original orchestral arrangements and features the musicianship of Sly5thAve’s collaborators and Ghost Note bandmates - headed by Snarky Puppy's multi-Grammy–winning percussion duo Robert “Sput” Searight and Nate Werth, alongside previous collaborator Roberto Verástegui. Born in Morristown, New Jersey in 1977, Reynolds grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, where he first started playing saxophone at age 13. Although he listened to a range of music as a kid, by his late teens he was a dedicated jazz student. After high school he honed his skills at Boston's Berklee College of Music, where he mentored with George Garzone, Hal Crook, and others. As a leader, he debuted with 2000's The Bob Reynolds Quartet, followed by 2006's Can't Wait for Perfect. That same year, he joined fellow Berklee alum John Mayer's band and spent the next five years with the pop star, touring and appearing on such albums as 2008's Where the Light Is and 2009's Battle Studies. In 2013, he returned to his solo work with Somewhere in Between, which reached number one on digital jazz charts. He then made his Snarky Puppy debut appearing on the genre-bending group's 2014 effort, We Like It Here. Two years later he was back with Snarky Puppy for the Grammy Award-winning Culcha Vulcha. In 2017, Reynolds delivered the EP Guitar Band, which featured appearances from Kneebody bassist Kaveh Rastegar as well as fellow Snarky Puppy members Robert "Sput" Searight (drums) and Mark Lettieri (guitar). In 2018 he began touring with 4-time Grammy-winning guitar legend Larry Carlton. He also released the albums Hindsight and Quartet which both landed in the top 10 of Billboard's Jazz charts. A passionate educator, he cofounded an annual summer retreat for adult saxophonists called the Inside:Outside Retreat and he's coached thousands of musicians through his Virtual Studio, a ground-breaking web-based teaching platform he built and has operated since 2010. #joshuaredman #bradmehldau #brianblade #christianmcbride by Bob Reynolds

Meet the Interns: Nick
Tumblr media
Stuff I like: Band things, drumming, music, puzzles, rubix cubes, escape rooms, rock climbing, adventuring, cats, trying new things, peanut butter, more band things, art things, architecture, appreciating others’ passions, spending time with friends, exploring new passions like my recent obsession with Legos, getting my picture taken, deep conversations, going deep for no reason, and still more band things—particularly drum corps.
Why I’m here: I’m here because mental health has been a major passion of mine for most of my life. I have a lot of close friends and family who have had their own personal struggles with mental health over the years. My one goal in life is to help people in the best way that I can and I thought this would be a good avenue for me to do this.
I would most likely stuff the office fridge with: Peanut butter—even though it doesn’t belong in the fridge. Or does it? I’m questioning everything I’ve ever known now. I’ll try it. For science! Anyway, rice, any form of Mexican food, ice cream, lots of other dessert items, chicken parmesan, and at least 30 cheese burgers with different toppings to satisfy all of my burger needs.
On the weekends, I'm usually: Catching up with self-care, going to the beach, exploring the area, eating at new restaurants or ordering pizza. I might also be out exploring Florida outside of Melbourne, enjoying nature, catching up on Netflix with the fellow interns, or trying new things.
We're jamming to your playlist on a road trip, what artists are we listening to? Over the course of the road trip we would hit a wide variety of artists on our playlist. We would start with some Ed Sheeran, Jon Bellion, Shawn Mendes, and A Great Big World. From there we would transition into the singer-songwriter vibe of Haley Klinkhammer and Jack Johnson. At this point in our drive some musical theater would be necessary. Anything from Hamilton to Dear Evan Hansen to Wicked. Lastly we would finish with some instrumental bops including but not limited to Snarky Puppy, Brasstracks, Ghost Note, Annika Niles, Dirty Loops, any drum corps recording, and maybe some acapella by Twisted Measure.
If you could go to any concert, who would you go see? I would go see a concert with the headliner being Ed Sheeran, and openers of Haley Klinkhammer and Jon Bellion. OR I would see a concert where the brass from the Bluecoats combined with the percussion from Santa Clara Vanguard and teamed up with the Boston Symphony Orchestra for a killer performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and for some reason there would be a drumset battle between Annika Niles and Robert “Sput” Searight. That would be an amazing show.
If you have dibs on the TV, what are you most likely watching? If we are talking TV shows, it’s probably some sitcom that I don’t really need to pay attention to to understand. Some include but are not exclusive to Parks and Rec, How I Met Your Mother, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, or Psych. If we are talking movies, it’s probably anything Disney related, action-adventure heist movies, anything with magic that's not Magic Mike, literally anything that Will Smith has been in, or the movie Wonder.
If you had a free plane ticket, where would you go? I would go to New Zealand while having a convenient three-day long layover in Seattle so I could explore my two bucket-list places in one fell swoop.
What takes you out of your comfort zone? I would say that overall this whole experience put me out of my comfort zone. Moving 1,400 miles away from home to live with six total strangers is scary, especially when the atmosphere and group of people are so different than from my social group at home. However, outside of our comfort zone is where we grow the most. Other things that take me outside of my comfort zone are heights, the arrangement of Publix, sharing any of my passions with others, commitment to adventures by myself, riding in Ubers, and trying anything new alone.

Bob Reynolds is an amazing musician, with something very exciting and original to say.” Joshua Redman, Grammy-nominated saxophonist “Bob is one hell of a saxophonist! ~ Matt Collar by Bob Reynolds

A TOTO saját lemezeinek eladásai meghaladják a 40 millió példányt.
A két muzsikus körül Steve ugyanakkor jelentős mértékben átalakult a felállás: az új tagok John Pierce basszer (Huey Lewis And The News), Robert „Sput” Searight dobos (Ghost-Note, Snarky Puppy) és Steve Maggiora billentyűs (Elvis, Moms Mabely). Az utóbbi időszak turnézenészei közül egyedül Dominique „Xavier” Taplin billentyűs (Prince, Ghost-Note) és a multihangszeres Warren Ham (Ringo Starr) maradt csak.
A megújult felállású Toto Dogz Of Oz címmel tervez turnéra indulni 2021 folyamán, és egyaránt érintenék Észak-Amerikát, illetve Európát.

Bill Laurance - Aftersun - new album from Snarky Puppy keyboardist
For his third album, Bill Laurance decided to reduce his music to its roots. He eschewed orchestration in favour of inviting the celebrated St. Louis-based percussionist Weedie Braimah into the fold, allowing his deep understanding of West African rhythm to inform the direction of the music. Alongside Bill's Snarky Puppy bandmates, Michael League and Robert "Sput” Searight, Laurance and Braimah bring danceable percussion to the fore, combining deep grooves with Laurance's signature genre-bending exploration.
