Haven't seen any discussion on here about how JK Rowling portrayed people with chronic illnesses ("spoonies") in the Ink Black Heart, and it surprised me. This article by Alicia Hendley says it all excellently, I've grabbed two screenshots, but it's definitely worth reading it in its entirety. In the book, the distinction gets made between characters with real, legitimate, visible disabilities (such as Strike) and those with invisible, chronic, implied fake/exaggerated illnesses (like Kea). The description of Kea's bio and tags on her tumblr account were there for ridicule. It saddened me that the chronic illness community has been represented in this way, though it has not surprised me at all, especially coming from JKR.

Happy Birthday Robert Graf
1923 - 1966
Robert Graf as Werner in The Great Escape
In The Great Escape Robert Graf played Werner, a Ferret stationed at Stalag Luft 3 who Eagle Squadron pilot Hendley (James Garner) befriends in order to later steal from and bribe him into assisting with materials for the escape.
Werner tells Hendley that he is afraid of being sent to the Eastern Front but in real life Robert Graf served on the Eastern front from 1942-1944 when he was 19-21 years old but after being wounded he was resigned to defence production duties. He then went on to study theatre and film and appeared in his first film in 1952.
There were at least two different versions of The Great Escape Script. The first, written in 1962, was very different to the finished script which was clearly changed when the film was cast as it included characters which do not appear in the film and some characters have been changed.
1962 Version
1963 Version
One reason for the changes to the first version was the cast members themselves of who a few of them had been prisoners of war during WW2 including Donald Pleasence who played Colin Blythe and Hannes Messemer who played Colonel von Luger. The cast were able to give an insight on life as a POW during the war.
One difference between the scripts was that in the first version the German sergeant and Ferrets including Werner were actually noted to have been sent to the Eastern Front after the escape. In real life no enlisted ranks or NCOs were punished for the escape although men did leave the camp to join the front lines due to being called up.
Robert Graf died of cancer at 42 years old just a few years after appearing in The Great Escape.
On another note there is a very small fandom for The Great Escape with some great fanfics on A03 and older sites which I would recommend if anyone is interested.

headcanon: big x
After Roger Bartlett was reported as one of the many dead after the big escape, a meeting was held among the remaining prisoners and they decided to make Virgil the next “Big X”. Virgil turned down the title, both shaken by the number of dead and leery of the responsibility that came with officially leading any next prison camp breaks. Despite his refusal, the camp has still accepted him as their unofficial leader, partnered with Robert Hendley, “The Scrounger”.

30/1/19 - Research into Elizabethan Portraiture
The cult of Elizabeth : Elizabethan portraiture and pageantry
Author: Strong, Roy.
Publisher: London : Pimlico
Creation date: 1999
Details on Nicholas Hilliard’s miniature painting of an unknown Young man amongst roses ‘is perhpase the single most famous portrait of the Elizabethan age.
Image: http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/articles/y/nicholas-hilliards-young-man-among-roses/
Nicholas Hilliard was an English artist, born in 1547. He is most renowned for his portraits of members of the English Courts during the reign of Elizabeth I. This miniature painting is fascinating. Parallels can be drawn between it and contemporaneous Indian miniatures. There is natural imagery, a full standing figure and ornate decoration. The main contrast however is the oval frame, which is unique to European portraiture. It is one of the main features present in Dr Hendley’s book.
Strong explains the main motif of the portrait as love-sickness and points to Reynolds’ indication of meaning in the roses. Who the man in the portrait is remains a mystery but there have been a number of suggestions. David Piper ‘made the daring suggestion’ that he is Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex and Strong agrees but adds the caveat that the ‘evidence which bears this out belongs to a wider context than that of physiognomical likeness alone’. He describes the image as ‘rich in allusions’ and places it in the context of Elizabeth’s reign, directly after the Armada. Other parallels can thus be drawn between Indian miniatures and this depiction of a love interest. It would be apt to describe Indian miniatures as also ‘rich with allusions’.
This is a miniature painting from Chitrashala in Bundi, Rajasthan (somewhere I will be visiting over Easter). It is a beautiful fresco of a woman with a playing with a yoyo. Both of these paintings were created at the same time, and each sets the subject in the midst of natural imagery. A significant difference is the stylised eyes in the Indian miniature, which are unrealistic and exaggerated. The Indian miniature is also less true to the natural landscape, using the typical image of rolling clouds in the background.
This book has been incredibly useful in introducing me to the fascinating world of Elizabeth court portraiture and provided me with some incredible useful comparisons.

The Great Escape no Cinema (1963) - Fugindo do Inferno
Então em 1963 “The Great Escape” (Fugindo do Inferno) é estrelado por Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, James Donald, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence, James Coburn e Hannes Messemer.
Cartazes do filme
#769: ‘The Great Escape’, dir. John Sturges, 1963.
Sturges’ film is a strange combination of faithful historical accuracy and some invention made up of thin air. That is to say that The Great Escape recreates in precise detail many parts of the prisoner of war camp from which the protagonists conduct their escape attempt, and yet many of the protagonists themselves are merged or, in the case of Steve McQueen’s character Virgil Hilts, are made up entirely. The real escape from Stalag Luft III had no Americans, no motorcycle jumps and about 150 more Canadians than the film depicts. In this respect, The Great Escape is the ideal for all films based on true events, in that the things that are unbelievable turn out to be mostly true, and the things that feel like they’re the most plausible (the plucky American ringleader) are invented. I was somehow surprised and not surprised at the same time to learn that the motorcycle jump was included at the behest of McQueen himself.
Despite this blend of fact and fiction, the film is actually quite enjoyable, even if its pacing is glacially slow at times. The tension in the second half, following the escape, is palpable, especially when our escapees move through a crowded train station towards an exit where identities are being checked. The chase scenes in this second half are done well, and give the sense of being hemmed in by European architecture.
Much of the power in this part of the film, though, comes from the actors’ performances in the scenes leading up to the escape. Even though we spend very little time with those who make up this ensemble cast, with the exception of McQueen and James Garner (as Robert Hendley), each of these actors brings enough minor detail that we get a sense of the lived life happening in the space beyond the film. Robert Desmond as the ‘tailor’ fills his performance with so much fussy precision about the type of counterfeit uniforms he is manufacturing that when we see the finished products later on, we’re drawn to inspect them ourselves, seeing details that can’t even be made out on the screen. By far the best at this is Donald Pleasance, the ‘forger’ Colin Blythe. Blythe’s eyesight deteriorates rapidly due to his work forging documents, and he attempts to bluff his way through the rest of the escape, going so far as to plant a pin on the floor and memorise where it is, so he can feign to see it from a distance. These little moments humanise the character in a way that makes it truly disappointing to see his escape thwarted, whereas when we watch the recapture of Hilts, he doesn’t seem to have any particular feeling about this event. McQueen’s performance isn’t bad, but he’s not given much beyond gritty determination to work with.
At this juncture, I want to look at Anthony Lane’s brief review of the film in the New Yorker in 2008. I think there’s a sentence here that indicates the major issue I had with the film, and why the stakes felt so low for a film where the antagonists are willing to shoot on sight. Lane observes that Sturges excised many of the more unpleasant features of the real event - the reprisals and violence and the unpleasant conditions of the stalag. “Still, how happy most of them seem,” Lane writes, justifying the Technicolor joyfulness by appealing to audience desires, much as the inclusion of an American protagonist was designed to do. This is a Boys’ Own Tale, and, as boys, we wanted it, cleansed of horrors, for ourselves.”
The Great Escape is a film where a prisoner is shot while climbing a barbed-wire fence, and yet he lolls peaceably from the barbs until he is dragged down. Indeed, life in the stalag moves on almost as if he had never been there. Generally speaking, these characters do not respond to barbed-wire fences as many of us should. This is not the expected expression of a man who just rode a motorcycle into coils of the stuff:
“Whee! Again!”
The disinfected nature of the film that Lane refers to lowers the stakes of the escape and, if this film has anything approaching a fatal flaw, it’s that. Given how nice the camp seems to be; how well-fed the prisoners are and how easy it is to acquire items from outside, even when it’s abundantly apparent that giving POW camp prisoners a camera is probably not an innocent idea; how vibrant the colours in the film are; the escape sometimes seems like a good-hearted lark, like sneaking out after bedtime. By all accounts, the camp wasn’t a bad place to live as far as stalags went. But Sturges’ film goes to the extreme with this, and it made me wonder why the protagonists were so desperate to escape into an uncertain Europe. The war, rationally, couldn’t have gone on forever. If I could get a camera and all the jam I wanted and have Independence Day parades, I’d probably have stayed put just to see how long the good times lasted. Hilts’ recapture at the end of the film doesn’t seem to upset him, and he seems rather cheered by the stalag being much the same as how he left it. Perhaps he genuinely just wanted to see if escape was possible. In any event, he was one of the lucky ones - for fifty of the real-life escapees, it turned out there was more riding on their escape than there was for a fictional American.

Most wanted Non-Binary/Androgynous Face Claims?
This was a rather difficult list to make, because I wanted to be sure I was including fcs that have resources. Now, with some of these, be aware that some of the suggestions only have very modern resources and may fit better as a supernatural being such as mermaid or fairy, such as if they have dyed hair.
Amandla Stenberg
Angelica Ross (trans woman)
Asia Kate Dillon
Bex Taylor-Klaus
Cara Delevingne (has very minimal period resources, and mermaid resources)
Choi Han-bit (trans woman, has some period resources)
Elliot Fletcher (trans man)
Ezra Miller (has some period resources)
Ian Alexander (trans man)
Jake Graf (trans man, possibly has period resources)
Jamie Clayton (trans woman)
Laverne Cox (trans woman)
Michelle Hendley (trans woman)
Mya Taylor (trans woman)
Nico Tortorella
Nicole Maines (trans woman)
Tilda Swinton (has some period resources)
Tom Phelan (trans man)
Zackary Drucker (trans woman)
However, if you can find resources for any other NB fcs, we’d completely support that, 100%.
Some resources you might find useful in finding some other NB (and trans) fcs are:
NB masterlist
Trans masterlist
Gender Diverse directory
NB & Trans directory
We also have three characters explicitly written as NB, and if you’d like to talk about the possibility of any of the other characters being NB or trans, we’d be happy to. Keep in mind that due to ethnicity and age, the suggested fcs are not NB themselves, but if you can find someone who fits, that’d be perfect!
Bella
Robert Anderson
Adelia Court
If you need further assistance picking fcs, or figuring out where a fc might fit, please just ask.
