Review : The Irishman (2019)
As iconic a director as Martin Scorsese is, most modern-day film fans only know him for one thing : his statement about Marvel movies not being cinema. Nevermind the classic run he had from Mean Streets to Shutter Island, or his immeasurable influence on cinema of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, many have just written him off as a bitter old man whose time has come and gone. Scorsese, however, clearly has no plans on relinquishing his influential grasp on cinema, as he teamed up with Netflix to save his current passion project, The Irishman.
As Frank Sheeran (Robert DeNiro) sits in a nursing home, he recounts his times connected to the Bufalino family and their criminal exploits. Sheeran reflects upon his time as a hitman for Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci), the way that his lifestyle impacted his family relationships, and his close relationship with the iconic Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino). As the years pass, Sheeran watches his friends succumb to the evils of the world... some pass at the hands of others, and some die of natural causes. Eventually, Sheeran attempts to reconcile his damaged family ties in the wake of his impending death.
The Irishman is a return to form for a director that is widely known as a master of his craft. While Scorsese does have range in regards to the stories he tells, no other director can tell crime family and mafioso stories quite like he can, and this film is a testament to his ability to tell these stories masterfully from decade to decade. While many of his previous mafia films have been based on real people and contain references to real-life events, The Irishman takes on one of the most notorious figures in the form of the giant that is Jimmy Hoffa, so Scorsese pulls out all the stops in regards to his bag of tricks. Iconic actors and actresses are cast as legendary figures of the criminal underworld, with referential footnotes provided for bigger picture context in regards to what roles they played and how long they lived, which parallels to both the film’s massive run-time and the irony of Frank Sheeran outliving everyone despite how dirty his hands became. Scorsese’s affinity for outsiders becoming deeply immersed in the worlds he illustrates is heavily present as well, as Sheeran becomes connected in ways that no non-Italian was previously allowed, or probably allowed since.
The Scorsese and DeNiro tandem has presented some fascinating character studies over the years, and The Irishman continues this tradition. This time around, we are presented with story of a man that is locked into the ideas of honor and loyalty for what many would consider a dishonorable lifestyle. It is never really made clear whether or not his motivations lie in something that Sheeran is missing as a former soldier, or something closer to an adoration for the figures that populate the world of the Mafia, but what is certainly clear is that whatever motivation it may be drives Sheeran nearly to the point of blind devotion for figures that fought epic, life-altering battles over minor personal squabbles and power games. This, however, does not mask the fact that the influence these men had changed the course of American history on more than one occasion, and Sheeran essentially played fixer to anyone who would not accept their role in this drastic course changing. As previously mentioned, the narrative irony lies in the fact that near the end of his life, all of the figures that Sheeran looked up to passed away, and all that he was left with were his memories of a time that most people are unaware of or care little about (other than for entertainment value), and he is forced to live this life in solitude due to the way that his choices fractured his relationship with his family.
Scorsese is a man that does not stray far from the tools that he has established to tell stories, and much of his familiar visual and sonic language is present in The Irishman. First and foremost, the soundtrack is solid from front to back, putting you in the proper state of mind for both mood and timeframe with each musical cue that is presented. His long steadycam shots are also present, though they are much more methodical in nature rather than used for show. Scorcese hearkens back to films like Goodfellas with his portrayal of stylized violence and explosions of classic cars, and at times, even frenetic cuts or camera moves that create a sense of uneasiness. Honestly, at this point, Scorsese fans know what to expect from him, and luckily, his skill has not dulled with age. The one (minor) knock I could give the film is that the de-aging, while shaving a few years off of the actors face, does not hide the fact that these men are older, very similar to how Samuel L. Jackson still moved like an old man in Captain Marvel, despite movie magic turning back the clock on his face and hair.
The combination of DeNiro, Pesci and Pacino is powerful and palatable, as the moments shared between the combinations of actors and the given scenarios leap off the screen... DeNiro especially shines, as he has always had an innate ability to communicate worlds of information strictly through the ways that his eyes convey a thought process. Seeing actors like Ray Romano and Bobby Cannavale in this movie makes me wish they’d been around for the older Scorsese films. Anna Paquin does a good job of manifesting the fractured nature of the family, and her chemistry with Pacino is interesting, but works well. Harvey Keitel manages to use his presence to great effect, opting to use minimal dialogue and implement a steady, intimidating gaze. Stephanie Kurtzuba and Kathrine Narducci make their presence known around DeNiro and Pacino without sacrificing themselves as tropes or caricatures. Jesse Plemons does what he does, but it also works, despite his looks making him stand out from the rest of those present in the film. Jack Huston steps firmly into the shoes of RFK, as does Sebastian Maniscalco in his wonderful portrayal of Crazy Joe (who I wouldn’t mind seeing in his own film). The cast is stacked from top to bottom, and performances of note include Welker White, Domenick Lombardozzi, Paul Herman, Louis Cancelmi, Gary Basaraba, Marin Ireland, Steven Van Zandt, Bo Dietl, Daniel Jenkins, Paul Ben-Victor, plus cameos from Jim Norton, Action Bronson, Patrick Gallo and Jake Hoffman.
As much as folks do not appreciate Scorsese’s views on what does or does not constitute cinema, having films like The Irishman is his oeuvre certainly validates any opinion he chooses to share. If you can manage to set aside the three-plus hours this film demands of your attention, I highly recommend diving in.

The actors in the MCU may have dominated with their big-screen characters, but many of them are also talented voice actors. Some MCU actors are well known for voicing popular roles in animated superhero movies, like Samuel L. Jackson in The Incredibles movies, otherwise known as Nick Fury. Even Doctor Strange's Benedict Cumberbatch has voiced a version of everyone's favorite Christmas character, The Grinch.
RELATED: Batman: Soul Of The Dragon: 10 Familiar Voices Behind The Diverse Cast
The funny thing about voice acting, though, is that those in the audience may not immediately catch on to what actor is voicing a character. Paul Rudd, for example, was one of the many Hollywood actors who took part in the adult dark comedy, Sausage Party, and many might be surprised that quite a few other MCU actors have voiced characters on the small and big screen.
10 Chris Pratt: Emmet (The Lego Movie)
Legos have, for a long time, been a favorite childhood toy. The toys range from many themes and even popular movies. In 2014, The Lego Movie was a computer-animated comedy based on the Lego line of construction toys and it centered around a Lego character named Emmett.
The role was voiced by actor, Chris Pratt. Pratt's character is mistaken for "the Special" from a prophecy and gets tangled in a resistance movement. Emmett aids the resistance in stopping a tyrannical villain from gluing the city to his perfect image.
9 Paul Rudd: Derek Dietl (Monsters Vs. Aliens)
Paul Rudd has an extensive filmography, from being well known as Mike from Friends to Ant-Man in the MCU. Amongst his long list of accolades is a voice role in the 2009 computer-animated movie, Monsters Vs. Aliens. Rudd played a supporting role as Derek Dietl, a local weatherman.
His role was also the ex-fiancé of the main character Susan, voiced by Reese Witherspoon. Derek takes any opportunity to further his career, even if it strains his relationship. On their wedding day, Susan is struck by a meteorite, causing her to grow big. She and a group of misfit monsters have to fight off an alien invasion.
8 Tessa Thompson: Lady (Lady And The Tramp)
One of Disney's classic movies, Lady and the Tramp, from 1955, got a makeover in 2019 when the movie of the same name was recreated into an alive-action/CGI hybrid. An upper-class Cocker Spaniel named Lady becomes friends with a homeless Schnauzer-mutt named Tramp (Justin Theroux).
Lady was voiced by MCU actor Tessa Thompson. The movie was sweet, as two dogs of different social classes fall in love, all while in the midst of a misunderstanding, as Lady believes her owner will abandon her after the birth of their baby. The movie even kept the famous pasta scene from the original animated film.
7 Tom Hiddleston: James Hook (The Pirate Fairy)
Tom Hiddleston took part in a direct-to-video feature-length animated movie that is part of Disney's Tinker Bell franchise. In The Pirate Fairy, Hiddleston voiced a different yet similar version of the most despicable pirate from the fairytales, Hook, James Hook to be exact.
RELATED: Disney: Ranking All Of The Tinker Bell Movies, According To IMDb Score
The character disguises himself as a cabin boy, while Zarina (Christina Hendricks), a fairy, takes control of the crew after promising to make the ship fly using fairy dust. In true Hook fashion, he double-crosses Zarina and reveals he's the leader of the pirate crew.
6 Robert Downey Jr.: Patrick Pewterschmidt (Family Guy)
Robert Downey Jr. is coveted as being the best and only portrayal of the MCU character, Iron Man. While Downey also became well known for his on-screen portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, he also did one voice role on television. In the fourth season of Family Guy, Lois learns that she has a brother.
Voiced by Downey, Patrick was sent to a psychiatric hospital after walking in on his mother's affair as a child. Lois, who is actually his long-lost sister, goes to visit him and deems him mentally fit and has him released, unaware that Patrick really is mentally unwell and a serial killer.
5 Samuel L. Jackson: Lucius (The Incredibles)
There have been countless memes made of the comical moment in The Incredibles when Lucius can't find his super suit. The superhero character was voiced by none other than Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson is well-known for lending his impressive voice for television and animated movies.
His role as Lucius is almost more recognizable than some of his other roles in Quentin Tarantino movies or as Nick Fury in the MCU. It's comical to realize that the voice role is also that of a superhero, but this one has the real power to freeze water.
4 Tom Holland: Walter Beckett (Spies In Disguise)
The animated spy-comedy movie, Spies in Disguise, not only had Tom Holland voicing the main character of Walter, but also Karen Gillan as Eyes. Holland played the socially inept super-scientist who gets entangled with the worlds' best spy. After a fluke accident, the spy gets turned into a pigeon.
RELATED: Tom Holland's Best Movies That Aren't MCU, Ranked (According To IMDb)
It's up to Walter to help the spy stop a major villain while also looking for the antidote to turn the spy human again. Shortly after Holland's role, he would again voice another character in the remake Dolittle, as Jip, with Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role.
3 Scarlett Johansson: Princess Mindy (The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie)
Scarlett Johansson has been a part of the MCU since her debut in the second Iron Man movie in 2010. But before MCU stardom, she also voiced a character in a movie about a yellow sponge when the acclaimed children's animated show, SpongeBob SquarePants got its first movie in 2004.
It's up to SpongeBob and Patrick to save the Krabby Patty formula and stop Plankton, who stole King Neptune's crown and framed the crime on Mr. Krabb's. Along the way, SpongeBob meets Princess Mindy who gives them encouragement and tricks them by making them think she's "turned them into men" so that they have the guts to continue their journey. Mindy was voiced by Johansson.
2 Benedict Cumberbatch: Grinch (The Grinch)
Jim Carrey's famed holiday movie and character in How the Grinch Stole Christmas got a reboot in 2018. There were some differences and similarities between both versions and instead of Carrey, the green and grumpy character was voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch.
The animated version followed a similar idea to the original. The Grinch becomes increasingly grumpy as Whoville is ready to celebrate Christmas. To get some peace and quiet, the Grinch hatches a plan to steal Christmas and all of Whoville's holiday joy.
1 Zoe Saldana: María Posada (The Book Of Life)
In 2014, Guillermo Del Toro produced a new 3D animated movie, The Book of Life, centered around the colorful and heartfelt storyline of a Mexican bullfighter. The story starts with a fight between Manolo Sánchez (Diego Luna) and Joaquín Mondragon (Channing Tatum), wagering on who will get to love María, voiced by Zeo Saldana.
When Maria and Manolo confess their love, they are interrupted and Maria is bitten by a snake. Manolo thinks she's dead and dies as well, hoping to be reconnected in the afterlife. Once he learns that she is alive, he fights for a way to leave the afterlife and return to his love.

CALL: subnetAIR in Hallein
4x 1500€ - September in Hallein
English version below
Oktober 2020 in Hallein anbieten. Teilnahme an der Schmiede ist Voraussetzung. www.schmiede.ca/apply Frist: LateApplication 5. July
--
Erwartung: Prozessdokumentation & ausstellbare Arbeit
Ort: Saline Pernerinsel // Schmiede Hallein // Schmiede in 5:20
Bewerbungsfrist: 20. Juni 2020
Kontakt: office{at}subnet{dot}at
ENGLISH ########################
This year we, subnet and Schmiede, can offer four subnetAIR units (€ 1,500 each) in the period from September 1 to October 5, 2020 in Hallein. SchmiedeParticipation is a prerequisite. www.schmiede.ca/apply LateApplication deadline is July 5th.
--
The year 2020 is not what it seemed, we are adapting. Promised subnetAIRs 2020 had to be postponed to 2021. The current situation makes travel unpredictable and prevents the usual close collaboration with the researchers at the Center for HCI. That is why subnet 2020 will break new ground. We are cooperating with Schmiede Hallein and will work in the Saline on Pernerinsel in Hallein, instead of in Salzburg. The Center for HCI is at our side as far as possible with advice, action and technology. The Saline will be available as a work studio from September 1st to October 5th. The exact room layout will take place in consultation and taking into account the developing realities of Schmiede.
Schmiede20: Pferde / Horses takes place from September 16 to 25. SchmiedeApplication is a prerequisite. The application is already online. Reference to subnetAIR submission in the SchmiedeApplication makes sense.
Key data: # 4 x € 1,500 for at least 3 weeks in Hallein # Possible period: September 1st to October 5th # Work room in the saline # Schmiede20: Pferde / Horses September 16-25 # The center for HCI is optionally available with know-how for projects with a focus on physical computing, hardware hacking and tinkering. # Travel, accommodation and meals are to be carried autonomously.
Procedure: # The application should not be longer than three pages and should consist of a concept, curriculum vitae and references. # An independent jury selects and awards. # The residency begins with a public meeting (meet the artist, online) and ends with a presentation and documentation of the results. # The subnetAIR fee is paid 50% at the beginning and 50% after documentation.
Expectation: Process documentation & work that can be exhibited
Objective: The subnetAIR program actively promotes artists and makes them public. subnetAIR counteracts the bottleneck in production and presentation rooms and lowers barriers in favor of realizing sound project ideas by providing infrastructure and know-how in our field of activity.
