“Jackpot” O’Neill

He was in it to win it,

And he was famous for his zeal.

He refused to quit,

 The man known as Patrick O’Neill.

His friend said, “Pat, you’re nearly broke.

You’re gambling away all your finances!”

Pat laughed and took out a smoke.

“That’s why they call it the Capital of Second Chances!

If I win, I’ll buy myself a lifetime supply of Irish beer,

And I’ll buy you a sequin tux.”

He then grinned from ear to ear,

As he fed the slot machine his last hundred bucks.

Pat cranked the lever hopefully,

With a glint of greed in his eyes. 

“I doubt you’ll win this time,” his friend said openly,

But they both prayed for a prize.

The machine read 7-7-7,

And Pat was taken aback. 

He exclaimed, “I must be in heaven!”

But his friend just laughed and slapped his back. 

Pat had won three hundred grand— 

He couldn’t believe it was real. 

And so his new life began,

And he became known as “Jackpot” O’Neill

This is why I really like Pathologic and the Dark Souls games. They really do make you work for your win!

Pathologic, in particular, uses negative game mechanics to really sell the world and the narrative it wants to push. I remember playing it a few years before the 2020 pandemic and it was eerily prescient when essential good shortages started happening...

really hitting this realization of like. it actually sucks that it's considered bad game design to, purposefully or not, give a player rough/negative feelings

if there's any argument at all against games being art it's the fact that we've all decided it's bad game design to take something away from a player, or to make them wait, or to fail to reward them for their efforts, or to let them get confused or lost or stuck

I was talking w/ @watermelynn-witch about this and she said "saying the purpose of a game is to be fun is like saying the purpose of a painting is to invoke joy"

I value fun really highly and I don't think fun is anti-art but. games can and should be allowed to be more things than just that

Brybanise the Soothsinger began this with the intent of forging a new peace in this strange new plane of existence. The Dragons were a menage and a threat, and wiping them out was a crime against existence. Perhaps worse than killing a unicorn.

She could sing anger out of anything, and the gilded Dragon in this area seemed to be very, very angry. She sang without rest. Without a pause. Willing herself to stay conscious as she approached the gilded Dragon's lair. Staying stoic in the face of the scorched and barren land around the mountain fastness.

It took her days to gain sight of the Dragon they called the Gilded Doom. The Blight, a disease caused by a lack of rest, was beginning to creep over her skin, but she still did not stop. Not even when the Dragon came to roost right in front of her.
