A Night at the Cricket
Tumblr media
I'll be honest, it wasn't our first choice destination on Wednesday...but as I turned into the entrance of the chosen game, we were confronted by a roller sitting in the middle of the pitch and not a sight-nor-sound of leather on willow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, there was a quick re-evaluation of our destination and the decision was made to go to Dacre Banks for their crucial game against Killinghall - both teams finding themselves in danger of relegation on this last day of the Harrogate & District Amateur Evening Cricket League.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now anyone reading these few words wanting a match report - I'm sorry, that's not what is going to happen here. Huge spoiler alert - Killinghall won to retain their Division Two status, and Dacre Banks had the ignominy of ending the season at the bottom of the table.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sorry about that...but I didn't want to bring you here on false pretences. So why the words?
Well, I think that after about 14 years of covering the local leagues, I have to admit that the HDAECL is probably my favourite league to cover.
Why? It isn't taken that seriously...well, that's probably a little unfair. It is taken seriously, but it is the league that is probably enjoyed the most by the players that take part.
They seem to enjoy it more partly because it isn't one of the Saturday leagues, or Sunday cup games...the teams can relax and enjoy playing cricket, for playing cricket's sake.
That's how it comes across to people sitting on the boundary - there are smiles, jokes, friendly goading, players winding each other up, and generally fun being had.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So it is with some sadness that this last Wednesday evening was the final round of games for 2024. Roll on 2025.

3rd August
St Wilfrid’s Procession
Tumblr media
Source: Visit Ripon website
On the first Saturday in August, the St Wilfrid Feast Procession takes place at Ripon in North Yorkshire. Wilfrid had been exiled from England and returned in triumph in 686. As he approached his former bishopric of Ripon, he fell ill and nearly died. After five days hovering on the brink, the bishop recovered and said that during his illness, he had had a vision of a holy procession going through the town. The people of Ripon duly obliged by commencing an annual parade on or about 3rd August in the saint’s honour. A selected man, attired in bishop’s robes, leads the parade through the streets and to the church. The delicacy of the day is Wilfrid Pie, made up of apples, sugar and cheese. Whatever the actual origin of the tradition, it does appear to be as much as nine hundred years old.
Today was also the day when Bell-Belt Day, a raucous event which had its origins in enthusiastic bell carrying monks seeking to drum up church goers by running through the streets at midnight, clanking, was celebrated in Congleton, Cheshire, during the Congleton Wakes. For some reason the bells, attached to a leather belt, eventually fell into the hands of the local sweeps, who soon turned ithe tradition into an excuse for extreme drunkenness. As a result the town corporation eventaually shut down Bell-Belt Day in the mid-19th century.

One Last Time
Tumblr media
Saturday was the final day of the Theakston Nidderdale League for 2024...and I headed to Sicklinghall.
You can read all about the day on John Fuller's Cricket Yorkshire - it features some exclusive images as well.
Follow this link to go directly to the article.

It was great to be at a game involved in promotion...and with so many potential outcomes for Thornton-le-Moor, Ripley, and Sicklinghall - it was a tough one to decided where to go!
Tumblr media
I think it was lucky to be involved at the game that mattered, with Sicklinghall going up by the difference in the net run rate.

North Stainley played their part in what was a competitive game of cricket and a season finale.

The season may have just finished, but planning for the indoor winter leagues is underway and so is the planning for summer 2025.
If I've visited a game you've been involved in and taken photos, they are available to purchase either as a social media download or in print format.
Take a look at our prices and FAQs on our website here.

A article about the season just gone is currently being written and a larger pictorial look-back is being put together for later on this year...keep an eye out for both!
Tumblr media
So, with the games scheduled for this Sunday all marked as conceded...my outdoor grassroots season appears to be at an end. Thank you to all the clubs that welcomed me this summer - the final count hasn't been completed, but it it certainly over 60 games!

Will McDuffie, Gabriella Abdul-Hakim, and Fritz Farrow at ABC News:
MADISON, Wis. -- Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney introduced Vice President Kamala Harris at a rally in Wisconsin on Thursday, citing the “critical moment in our nation’s history” which has led her to vote for a Democrat for the first time in her life. Cheney, the former co-chair of the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol, laid out former President Donald Trump's actions on that day before telling the crowd, “I don’t care if you are a Democrat or a Republican or an independent. That is depravity, and we must never become numb to it. Any person who would do these things can never be trusted with power again.” “What January 6 shows us is that there is not an ounce – not an ounce – of compassion in Donald Trump," Cheney said. "He is petty, he is vindictive, and he is cruel, and Donald Trump is not fit to lead this good and great nation." Cheney is among a handful of prominent Republicans, including her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, who have pledged to support Harris' bid, but her endorsement, as one of former President Donald Trump's most outspoken critics within the party, is one that Harris hopes to leverage in crucial states like Wisconsin, whose margins are expected to be razor thin.
Cheney represented Wyoming in the House for three terms, but she lost her 2022 primary against Trump-backed Harriet Hageman, a one-time Cheney adviser. As she addressed the crowd Cheney said, "we are bound together by the one thing that matters to us as Americans more than any other, and that's our duty to our Constitution and our belief in the miracle and the blessing of this incredible nation." "We have a shared commitment as Americans to ensuring that future generations live in a nation where power is transferred peacefully, where our leaders are men and women of good faith, and where our public servants set aside partisan battles to do what's right for this country," she added. [...] The location of Thursday's event was symbolic: the central Wisconsin city of Ripon, where an 1854 meeting at a local schoolhouse helped form the Republican Party.
Anti-Trump Republican Liz Cheney spoke at a Kamala Harris rally in the Republican Party’s birthplace of Ripon, Wisconsin on Thursday introducing Harris.
Cheney told the rallygoers the about the threat of Donald Trump taking back the White House that “he is petty, he is vindictive, and he is cruel.”

I am tellllling you the next UK trip I do (been twice so far!), I’m exploring York/Yorkshire! Besides York, Ripon and Whitby are high on the list.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ay up folks, its Yorkshire Day! A celebration every year on 1st of August of this wonderful, diverse and culturally rich part of England.
Yorkshire ties as my favourite region in England with Northumberland and I flip flop between which one we want to end up living in (The Yorkshire Dales or the Northumberland coast). From its wild moorlands of Bronte country, to its bustling industrial mill towns of Leeds and Halifax, to its beautiful seaside towns and fisherman’s villages, the rolling hills and drystone walls of the Yorkshire Dales and beyond it isn’t hard to see why Yorkshire has earned the moniker “God’s own country” by its proud inhabitants. So to celebrate this wonderful place here’s a few facts about York’shr.
Yorkshire is the largest county in the UK and covers a large part of Northern England, that’s a whopping 2.9 million acres- ee ba gum!. It is BIG, so big that over the years it was often subdivided into smaller jurisdictions for admiration purposes, most notably the areas of North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire. While each of these regions certainly has its own distinct geography, accent, culture and history to explore, Yorkshire as a whole has always continued to be recognised as a geographic territory and cultural region. Yorkshire may be big now but it used to be bigger! Until 1974 it covered parts of what are now County Durham, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and the Tees Valley. Yorkshire also has nearly a third of the total area of National Parks in England (the North York Moors, most of the Yorkshire Dales and part of the Peak District) covering a fifth of the region’s land area.
Yorkshire also lays claim to being home to some of Britain’s ‘oldest’ things including the oldest known city in Britain, Ripon, which was granted a charter by at least 886. Scarborough on the coast was Britain’s first seaside resort, established in 1660 after the discovery of the ‘healing’ spring waters which later would form the spa. The oldest registered visitor attraction in England is Mother Shipton’s Cave and Petrifying Well in Knaresbough, North Yorkshire which has been welcoming tourists since at least 1630. Sheffield FC is the oldest football club in the world founded in 1857. The county is also home to Britain’s oldest pub (and perhaps the oldest pub in the world), The Bingley Arms in Bardsey dates from AD 953 to the days of the Vikings and has been serving beer for over 1,000 years. Speaking of pubs, Yorkshire is also home to England's highest pub, The Tan Hill Inn which sits 1,732 ft above sea level at a point where the counties Yorkshire, Durham and Cumbria meet. You might recognise it from the Christmas Waitrose advert where everyone got snowed in!
As well as the ‘oldest’, Yorkshire lays claim to some other great feats! The county has over 2,600 ancient monuments of national importance (14% of the English total), 800 conservation areas and 116 registered parks & gardens. The North York Moors Railway is the longest steam operated railway in the UK, with over 18 miles of track running through the countryside from Pickering to Whitby. The city of York has the longest city walls in England, at three miles long, and they enclose an area of around 263 acres. York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, it took 252 years to build in its present form and contains 128 medieval stained glass windows and York’s Shambles is considered to be the best-preserved medieval street in Europe.
The emblem of Yorkshire, the white rose of the House of York is instantly recognisable for many and flies on flags across the county. The county is well known for its distinct culture, from its dialect to its food. This county gave us Parkin, Yorkshire curd tarts, Wensleydale cheese, Pontefract cakes and by far its most outstanding contribution to English culture; the Yorkshire pudding which makes up THE MOST IMPORTANT part of our Sunday dinner!
The unofficial anthem of Yorkshire is the popular folk song On Ilkla Moor Baht ‘at (“On Ilkley Moor without a hat”) which showcases some of the distinct words and pronunciations the region is known for. The dialect is old and has roots in Old English and Old Norse, being known as Broad Yorkshire or Tyke. Known for expressions like ayup, reet good, put ‘wood int ‘ole (close the door), shut thee cake oyle (shut your mouth) this county is still a glorious bastion of reet proper English as it was meant to be, home to northern and regional diversity that is fast disappearing. I will leave you to puzzle over this poem by about Yorkshire by Eric Scaife;
We’re a rare strange bunch ‘at live up ‘ere
But we’ve gradely grub an’ champion beer
An’ mony a famous name thou’l see
On Yorksheer own proud family tree.
Oor sportin’ ways are second ter none
Oor art an’ culture speak as yan
Us Yorksheer fowk ev Yorksheer ways
An’ when we say we laiks we plays.
Oor language is t’ English true
Oor thee, thou, tha’s are nothin’ new
Wi’ glottal stops an’ aitches dropped
The G at end is allus cropped.
So com’ thi ways to oor grand county
An’ sample sum o’ Yorksheers bounty
Oor ales are grand, oor looance too
An’ friendly fowk to welcome thoo.
🫖 🍰 🫖🍰🫖🍰🫖🍰🫖🍰🫖🍰🫖🍰
So today lads and lasses ‘sit thi sen darn’, put yus feet up, hav’ a proper brew of Yorkshire tea and enjoy some of my favourite photos I have taken around Yorkshire. Happy Yorkshire Day!
