Remembering Alain Delon, David Handelman, Patt Shea and John Aprea
Here is my combined remembrance of a number of entertainers we lost this weekend:
Remembering Alain Delon 1935-2024
Delon with Marianne Faithful and Mick Jagger back in the day
French actor / producer / writer / director Alain Delon has died at 88. He was the very first actor to play Tom Ripley in the first film adaptation Purple Noon in 1960 among the many international films he starred in.
The link above is the obit from Hollywood Reporter.
Remembering David Handelman 1961-2024
Former Rolling Stone journalist turned TV writer David Handelman has died at 63. He wrote for RS in the 80s writing interviews and articles on Talking Heads, the Coen brothers, Motley Crue, the Kids in the Hall (one of the early articles about the Canadian comedy group in the U.S.), and Jane's Addiction. He ended up working with Kids in the Hall's Mark McKinney on a TV spec script, which lead to Handelman writing for TV shows like Sports Night (ABC 1998-2000) which lead to many more Aaron Sorkin collaborations, my favorite being Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (NBC 2006-07).
The link above is the obit from Rolling Stone itself.
Remembering Patt Shea 1931-2024
TV writer Patt Shea has died at 93. She wrote a ton of shows for Norman Lear including episodes of The Jeffersons (from 1977-78), All in the Family (in 1979), and co-creating the spin-offs Archie Bunker's Place (CBS 1979-83) and Gloria (CBS 1982-83). Other TV shows she sometimes wrote for includes Happy Days, Valerie, The Golden Girls, and I Married Dora. That's quite a resume!
The link above is the obit from Hollywood Reporter.
Remembering John Aprea 1941-2024
Aprea in The Godfather Part II
Actor John Aprea has died at 83. His IMDB has over 100 acting titles, but he is most known for playing the Young Tessio in The Godfather Part II (Abe Vigoda was the older Tessio).
He was a frequent collaborator of Jonathan Demme's as well, appearing in small roles in Caged Heat, Crazy Mama, and his remake of The Manchurian Candidate (a film that featured quite a few Demme alumni). Other notable roles included Bullitt, New Jack City, The Game, as well as episodes of The Powers of Matthew Star, Three's a Crowd, and The Sopranos.
The link above is the obit from Hollywood Reporter.

Happy Halloween!
(For those who celebrate!)
I have nothing special written for this occasion but let me tell you what the Crown + ROs + the siblings have dressed up as in the years before.
MC: very uninspired — a ghost. Literally a white sheet with eye holes. Or even more sad — a pine-cone. Due to this depressing state of affairs on Halloween ‘89 Nia made them dress up as Freddy Krueger.
Imre: to the surprise of no one he spent most of the 70s and all of the 80s as Indiana Jones. Thanks once again to Nia she managed to get him to agree to dress up as Rick Blaine from Casablanca from ‘90-‘92 and in ‘93 as Vito Corleone.
Nia: now she will never be caught dead wearing a costume two years in row. She’s done it all: princess, pirate, witch, fairy, Shirley temple, Andie Walsh from Pretty in pink, Sandy from Grease, Madonna, Cher, Tina Turner and in ‘93 she went as Morticia.
Lorcan: everyone always thought he was wearing a costume but those are literally his clothes. With the satanic panic of the 80s people did think he was dressed up as a devil worshipper. He did dress up as Marty Mcfly in like ‘91.
Salvatore: he was the type of dress up as all the gangsters, Michael, Tony, jimmy Conway from goodfellas. After dressing up as Travis bickle from taxi driver his mother only ever allowed him to dress up as a businessman.
Orla: whatever popular female movie character of that year was that’s what she dressed up as. Claire from the breakfast club, Ellen ripley, Lydia deetz, Princess Leia, sally from when Harry met sally, Sarah Connor, Lorraine mcfly.
Percival: he would just throw on a wig, get a band t-shirt and say he was whatever rockstar come to his head at that moment whether he looked like them or not — iggy pop, Jim Morrison, mick jagger, Freddie, Bowie, what-have-you.
Enjoy the night 💜

noah ripley / @visceraldose : "would you believe i'm single?"
WHEN SIMON & GARFUNKEL WROTE THE SONG old friends, they probably weren't imagining the likes of chris lee and noah ripley. but technically, they did fit the category. the reason why so many young & famous people found themselves in the same situations was because of los angeles. it was a honey trap, a pair of plush red lips with teeth that sparkled -- the same teeth that would bite your hand off and have you begging for it to happen again.
‘ i couldn't believe it more than if it were written in the bible itself. ’ chris quips, having watched calamity jane over there throw away the last 30 minutes of progress with a stranger at the bar. he'd been to many a party with noah for they ran in the same circles, and had done for a long time now. yes, he could believe he was single -- perhaps for the same reason chris was.
‘ you gotta stop if you're bothered about bein single. ’ noah would know what chris meant by stopping, ‘ i wanna stop, i know that much. mick jagger wrote his best stuff on pills, but he looks like a jim henson puppet. ’

365 DC Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
January 3rd - Judomaster
Three heroes have operated under the mantle of Judomaster, each possessing an expertise in then martial art of Judo as to border on the superhuman. Sergeant Ripley Jagger was the first Judomaster. He and his associate, Tiger, donned disguises and used their martial arts prowess to battle the Axis Powers during The Second World War. The hero was soon thereafter recruited into the Allied Forces team of super heroes, The All-Star Squadron. Years later, a second unidentified individual assumed the guise of The Judomaster and aided The Justice League on a mission. Sonia Sato is the third and current Judomaster. She was born into a sect of Yakuza assassins trained from birth to be living weapons. Along with her peerless skills as a master of Judo, Sato is additionally a metahuman who possesses the ability to emit a type of force field that deflects and reroutes attacks directed at her. Sato’s father attempted to free her from her blood-bind to the Yakuza and he was murdered for this. Horrified over the killing of her father, young Sato fled to America and became a member of The Birds of Prey, taking on the mantle of the new Judomaster. Later, with the aide of The Justice Society, Judomaster was able to put an end to the faction of the Yakuza who were responsible for her father’s death. She then became a member of The Justice Society. The original Judomaster first appeared in Special War Series #4 (1965); the second first appeared in Justice League Quarterly #14 (1994); whereas the Sonia Sato version first appeared in Birds of Prey #100 (2007).

Review: The Burnt Orange Heresy
Dir. Giuseppe Capotondi
“Critics,” intones art historian/critic James Figueras (Claes Bang), “are the banks of the river, and art is the water that flows between us: We work to channel their flow.” The debonair Figueras is performing one of his many standard lectures for tourists in Milan, promoting his just-published book called, hilariously, The Power of the Critic. The usual crowd includes tour bus groups and blue hairs who only want to ask him about Renoir and Da Vinci -- “as if they’re the only artists who made anything,” he complains later — but among the crowd on this day is Berenice (Elizabeth Debicki), a luminously beautiful American from Duluth, who takes a shine to the suave-seeming lecturer.
The two share a tryst, and Figueras invites her to stay with him as he takes up the invitation from Joseph Cassidy (Mick Jagger), a massively rich art dealer, to join him at his Lake Como estate for a business arrangement. There, in a beautiful mansion (that the wealthy man refers to as a “cottage”), Cassidy makes his pitch: Living on the property in a small cabin on his estate is the reclusive artist Jerome Debney (Donald Sutherland), a legend in the art world for having turned a painting from his first show that had been burned to the ground just before its exhibit, into an enigmatic empty frame; Cassidy wants Figueras to somehow secure one of his new works, the likes of which the world hasn’t seen in nearly five decades.
As a carrot, Figueras is offered the chance to interview the revered man, something the artist also hasn’t allowed in decades. The offer is not without its barbs, however. When Figueras asks what’s to stop him from just procuring the interview and leaving well enough alone, Cassidy reveals the “research” that has been conducted on the critic’s past, revealing some unsavory tendencies towards spending money he doesn’t have, and compromising his critical ethics in order to procure more.
He’s also a pill-popper, a trait that rightfully worries Berenice, a kindly, innocent type, on leave from her high school teaching gig, after having an ill-advised affair with a colleague which left her temporarily pregnant. Meeting Debney the next day, after the artist wanders onto the pavilion upon which the couple are sitting by the pool, Berenice genuinely hits it off with him, even as Figueras’ genuflections leave him more wary.
Thus ensues Giuseppe Capotondi’s smartly sophisticated art forgery thriller, based on the novel by Charles Willeford, which slowly reveals the characters’ true nature, as the plot begins its inexorable squeeze. Figueras, it turns out, is all ambition and no soul: Despite his declarations otherwise, all he wants is the wealth and fame of success, by any means necessary. When Debney reveals the blank canvases that comprise his latest works, Figueras recoils as if affronted. “You’re a thief,” he declares, “stealing from the world,” but, of course, all he really cares about is how he’s meant to procure a new work for Cassidy, if there is nothing to show.
Bang, who, between this and his role as an egoist museum director in Ruben Ostland’s The Square, has created a small cottage industry of playing desperately vain men in the art world, whose ethics are all too easily compromised. Figueras is like an unstable compound nucleus, seemingly orderly on the outside, but housing dangerous materials underneath, able to fissure at a moment’s notice.
Debicki, meanwhile, rightfully lauded for her role in Steve McQueen’s Widows, proves to be anything but a flash in the pan. Sweet, breezy, and charming, she acts as the soul of the film. In a milieu in which nearly everyone is one sort of masked monster or other, she is refreshingly candid without being naive. In a neat bit of character interplay, both Berenice and James refer to each other with a series of endearment bromides, often ironically (“pumpkin,” “champ,” “sugar plum,” “chief”). She’s in on the joke, as far as she knows, but doesn’t realize yet the lengths her new lover is willing to go in order to ensure his success.
At just under 100 minutes, Capotondi briskly moves the film through its paces, clouding the waters with the schemes of duplicitous men, who've sold out any love of art for their greater obsession of cash and prestige. A literary thriller in the vein of The Talented Mr. Ripley, it’s become a genre all too rare in the era of blockbuster bravado. By the end, Figueras’ earlier analogy for art critics has been turned on its head: Instead of the “riverbanks” controlling the flow of art, these supposed cultural icons are more like failed locks during hurricane season, old, rutted, and worse than useless.

Critical Role Episode 33: Reunions
I’ve said before that doing these timestamps can feel kinda pointless sometimes because the ones on youtube are usually decent enough, but then I couldn’t find a timestamp for the Perc’ahlia “Darling, take the mask off” moment anywhere and it’s times like that when I feel like it’s worth it.
(Pt 1, 2:09:15 btw)
Another really good one. I know I said I was ready for the Briarwood fight but I’ve been putting off the next episode for days now. I guess I’m trying to prepare myself for what I assume will be a 4 hour 40 minute fight, but I’m also kinda not ready for this arc to be over.
