Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave (2005)
In today's review, I find that mutant monstrosities like a good dance tune like the rest of us. As I attempt a #positive review of Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave #AimeeLynnChadwick #CoryHardrict #JohnKeefe #JennyMollen #PeterCoyote
A teenager’s stereotypically reckless behaviour can be great fuel for keeping a film going. As they’re all for excess partying, dangerous stunts, and everything in between, even when faced with threats, they persevere, from viruses to the living dead. In 2005, jointly filmed with its previous film, Tarman and his pals got a send-off that they won’t soon forget in Return of the Living Dead Rave to…

Out of the Rain
Tumblr media
Summary: Just a little fluffy one-shot about Ricky, coffee, and cafes. It's not special, just a bit of rambling lol, don't look at me.
cw: None.

Rick isn’t a coffee snob, he isn’t, it's the atmosphere here. Coffee can be many things, he has drunk all kinds of coffee, all over the world, and some of the different kinds have been quite strange, he will admit that. For instance, the time in Australia, they put milk in their coffee instead of creamer, milk, out of a little milk box, it was weird. So strange. It had been amusing as anything watching it stream out of the straw that he stuck into the carton though, pouring right into his coffee like a little spout, hilarious actually. Tasted weird, but hilarious to look at.
When he’s home, though, sure, he has his coffee machine, and he can make himself a perfectly good cup of coffee right at home, but when he stumbled upon the café purely by chance one day, a quiet little place trying to get out of the rain, it had changed everything.
It was the atmosphere.
It was just a little coffee shop, nothing special to look at when you first saw it, a counter, table, chairs, a reading corner to the far side with a small area with some worn books that people could pick up and look over. Ricky had gone in, pushed his hood off his head, and brushed off the rain droplets from his hair as he looked around, it was nice, it was quiet. While Ricky was waiting for his order he went over to have a look at some of the titles of those books that first day, the girl behind the counter told him he could read while he drank, or if he was willing to leave his information, borrow a book.
Even after she had set his coffee in front of him, and he’d paid her for it, the place was so quiet, quiet and a perfect spot out of the rain that day, so perfect that he found himself still talking with her. Aimee her name was, she was nice, and before long he realised his coffee had almost gone cold, then an elderly woman was coughing softly behind him to let him know she was waiting to order.
Apologising for getting in the way, he moved to the side and cringed when he went to sip his now stone-cold coffee. Waving goodbye to Aimee, realising he was long overdue to be on his way anyway. With the thought of returning at a later date, the rain had eased and was on his way.
Tumblr media
It was a few days later that going back to the café crossed his mind again, after a recording session, tired, and looking to have a bit of time to relax. Around now, he would usually go home, make himself a good cup of coffee, and either pull out a book or even work on one of his projects. Today he felt like a book, but the moment he thought of settling in with a coffee would be nice, he could have but consider, why at home, why make it himself? It might be nice to just sit back. It wasn’t that he wanted to let someone else do the work, and far more along the lines, that he craved a different place to settle in and relax today. He smiled softly as he left the studio, his mind made up.
He did go home though, but only for a minute. Just a minute. He went by so he could drop in and collect a small stack of books he had been putting aside over the last couple of days, and then was out the door again. After that, he was in his car and driving, making his way back to the quaint little café that he had found on that rainy day. Unfortunately for Ricky, this time, it was a little bit more busy, you could almost call it the afternoon rush, at least it was a rush for a tiny little café like this.
Before he got in line to order his coffee, he went over to the wall of shelves that were lined with books, the reading book nook and added the books he’d decided to donate from his collection to the shop, to some of the semi-empty shelves, finding wherever he could fit them in. None of them were his published book, because that would just be pretentious, and he was not going to be doing that, absolutely not. Once all the books he had brought with him, had found new homes on the shelves, he made his way back to the counter of the café. By this point, the line to wait had diminished, and he was thankful that he wouldn’t have to wait as long.
Smiling as he came to stand at the front of the counter, Aimee was there before him, it seemed she had noticed him by the books with her following remark.
“You know, you’re supposed to hand those books in so we can make sure they're suitable reading.”
Ricky raised an eyebrow at that,
“Are you suggesting I’d steer anyone wrong on their literary journey?”
She couldn’t help but smile slightly at that.
“I am offended.”
A gasp of mock offence as his hand came to his chest with the word, still, it was followed by a wide grin from Ricky,.
“Not enough to go collect them for you, though. I guess you’ll just have to search the shelves if you are that worried, little book hunt for you. Make sure I am not poisoning any young minds with foul words over there.”
She laughed at his teasing before he gave her his drink order, and he did with a smile on his face. Ricky watched after she finished making his drink, heading over to one of the tables in the far corner of the café, liking the enclosed spot, he sat with a book. She stole a minute while she had no new customers, to stroll over to the shelves to peek at the books, and see which ones she could make out were new. He saw her pick out two of them from the shelf.. She had at least five more to find by the time he was finished with his coffee.
“Enjoy your reading, Aimee.”
She glanced over her shoulder, seeing him head out the door.
“Looking forward to it, Ricky.”

Ask me anything
please ask me questions. As I said earlier, high school football (soccer) pre-season has recently started and the actual season is starting soon. I need something to distract me from the stress and pressure of high school sports, high school itself, and face to face social interaction itself. So please, I beg, ask me questions that have to make me stop and actually think about so it can push all of those other thoughts to the back of my head.

Informational update!!!  I have finished updating all of my mobile masterlists except descendants ( currently finishing the last two gifs for that and then it’ll need to be remade in two parts ) — fandoms that needed updating were Glee, Gilmore Girls, The Hunger Games ( which needs a second update to add in Hollis’ band oops ), Merlin, Percy Jackson, Miscellanous ( specifically for OUAT ocs ), and DC, and making a masterlist for Schmigadoon, and although I say this every time, I’m going to try my best to not get quite so behind again!
the desktop masterlists have not been updated but they are a much bigger thing to tackle so I’m going to hold off on those until I’m less sick and have the energy to actually deal with it!

The Spectacular Now - Movie vs. Book Comparison
Tumblr media
Spoiler Warning ahead: You have been warned.
The Spectacular Now is a book that takes you on a messy yet simple journey. It's a one-way ride that you won't know the destination of while reading or watching until you get to the very end. Ever since they came out, I'd known of the existence of both the book and the movie. However, it wasn't until recently that I got the chance to read the book and during the whole time, the only thoughts that ever crossed my mind were, "How will this look like as a movie? What scenes will they incorporate or leave behind?" and let me tell you when I watched the movie for the first time after finishing the book I was surprised.
Part I: Love and how it translates at the end.
In itself, the book is not as flashy as others in the teen fiction department. It tells you the story of Sutter Keely, "God's favorite drunk" and his journey on self-awareness, love, and family and relationship hardships. It doesn't do too much on overcomplicated storylines, yet Sutter makes sure to get his voice heard and that things are explained to the reader from his own creative and distinct point of view. At first, you may think it is a romance but with every turn of the page, you discover that it is about love, but not in the typical sense of the word. It's not focused solely on romantic love but on the aspect of loving someone so much you need to let go in order to protect them.
The movie on the other hand focuses on the romantic love aspect of the book. It centers itself around the relationship that exists between Aimee and Sutter and even changes the ending to make sure that there is a possible future between the two of them, although in the book Sutter makes sure that Aimee goes to Philadelphia and that she moves on (even if it's under false pretenses) because he knows better things await for her, including a future he knows at the moment he isn't able to provide her.
This change of ending -although providing the audience with a more hopeful outlook- changes the whole original concept that not all love stories need to have a happy ending. Love isn't shaped by the fact that two characters end up together. The love that existed between them was intricately determined by all the Spectacular moments that happened in their Now, but Sutter and Aimee ending up together throw that entire notion from the book out of the window.
Part 2: Parents
One thing that is prevalent in the book is the relationship between parents and their children. We see it from the beginning in many shapes and forms (divorced parents and their effect on their children, children longing for the parent they don't have, mother figures that although not perfect care for their children, etc.) The little boy from the first chapter is almost a future version of Sutter's journey, leaving home unannounced in search of that father that left and hating the mother that stayed because of how she drove the father away. However, even though Sutter is able to save the kid from harm, he isn't able to save himself from the hard truth about his drunk father.
The movie tackles this well enough and the scene where Sutter returns to the dinner just to find his father drinking with his buddies instead of keeping his promise is a great addition to this story. On the other hand, the whole plotline with Sutter's mother isn't developed as nicely in the movie. It just goes from "You're just like your father" to "You're nothing like your father" after seeing her kid break down. Of course, in the book, we don't even see this redemption arc in their relationship, but I do believe there could've been more moments between them that established that connection and personal transition better.
Part 3: Intervention
One scene that I do feel needed to be included in the movie was the car intervention scene with Ricky, Marcus, Cassidy, and Sutter. Here is where Sutter finally gets to confront his friends and openly share his opinions with them instead of just with the reader. Here is where Cassidy tells him she loved him and the entire book takes a swift shift. We enter the "is he going to listen to Cassidy and leave Aimme? or is he gonna learn how to love and let others love him?" It's a pivotal point for Sutter. He just submitted his two weeks' notice at work, graduation is around the corner, he hasn't applied to any Universities, and is most likely taking summer school thus jeopardizing Aimme's ideas of moving in together in Philadelphia. But none of this makes it into the movie.
Part 4: Production
I feel like the worst part of the film was the short and quick-fire scenes. The dialogue was fairly loyal to the book and the acting was really good. But the cinematography and editing choices left me wanting more. Scenes happened to quickly and sometimes I couldn't understand how much time happened from one moment to the next. A lot of shots were one-dimensional and very dark and even though the conversation between characters carried the film, there were moments were watching it just wasn't as appealing.
Conclusion:
I could go on about comparing the book and the movie side by side, frame by frame, and interaction by interaction. Of course, the first kiss scene was different, the dinner with Sutter's sister was different, Ricky was a very forgettable character in the movie, they did Cassidy wrong in the movie by not showing how much she cared about Cassidy, and on and on... But I'm not going to do that because this would be too long and at the end of the day a book is a book and its adaptation is another thing. In the case of The Spectacular Now, my opinion remains the same, the book was better because it gave the characters real-time to develop, and it had an impeccably different ending from other teen romcoms that would've made the movie stand out more.
What about you? Which one did you like best?

Beautiful Rose
entry for @comfy-vember that might upload tomorrow, day five !! and it's a BFUCU fic, who would've guessed
Day 5 - Saying their name — Hand on knee — Dressing fancy
summary: small snippets of Ricky Goldsworth and his daughter, Rosalie Goldsworth, based around her name.
“Rosalie.” Ricky blinked, turning his head to Aimee for a split second. It had been a day since their daughter had been born in the cold month of January, they stood over her crib one night watching their little one sleep, a nightlight was the only thing that illuminated the room and the soft melody of a music box filled the quiet. Ricky remembered the first moment he had his eyes on his newborn daughter, small and so, so new. He hadn’t been used to such a concept as being a father, if anything, he hadn’t known the basics. At first he would fear her being scared of him, a fresh scar on his cheek just right above the eye.
But she hadn’t cried, she smiled and reached out her tiny arms towards him, giggling.
“I want to name her Rosalie.” Aimee said again, a weary, kind smile and kind eyes greeted Ricky, “it means… ‘beautiful rose’.”
It really was no secret that Aimee liked flowers, roses to be exact. The pink ones were her favorite, at her shows, oftentimes people handed her a single rose during her jazz concerts, but Ricky back then, young and hopelessly in love, had given her a whole bouquet of them. Love was a weakness he supposed, a soft spot hidden in the calloused heart he had inside. Back then, anyone who knew the infamous golden boy assumed he didn’t have a heart. Nothing behind those cold, dark eyes but a warning, a threat and a frown that meant danger. But now, those same dark brown eyes had softened at the woman he loved the most, the sun herself almost.
“I like that…” he whispered, he looked at the sleeping infant, a smile. “Rosalie Leah Goldsworth, I like that a lot.”
Under the gentle hum of the melody and the faint glow of the nightlight in that wintry evening, they kissed.
***
“Rosalie, god damn it– Rosalie!” Ricky rarely got frustrated with Rosalie, she was five at the time, of course she was, she had been becoming an energetic child, running around the house and giggling, hiding where Ricky couldn’t find her, sometimes even being assisted by her uncle who in younger sibling fashion loved annoying Ricky to no end. “Rosalie, you get back here right this instance, I’m not playing around this time–”
He yelped, Rose slammed the closet door open that would have almost completely knocked Ricky out cold. She laughed, raising her arms up and yelling out, “boo!” Ricky had remembered the time when his mother would tell him stories from when he was five, that when Ricky was small, he’d hide in his mother’s closet and try to scare her as well. It almost never worked. Rose was growing up fast, faster than Ricky would’ve expected, it almost scared him in a way that she looked like him. Almost like a carbon copy, and yet, he saw in her eyes, he could almost see Aimee.
“C’mon Rosalie, get to bed.” Ricky murmured, lifting her up and carrying her upstairs. She squirmed a bit, she had been wiggly too, always trying to pry herself from his arms and continue to run around the household, laughing to herself in hopes her father would play some sort of tag. Sometimes, Ricky wondered if he was ever this hyper (and unruly) as a child, always trying to pry out of his mother’s arm just to run around, burning out any energy he had left over from the day. As a child, Ricky had always known himself to be the quiet type, keeping to himself and usually seen alone, though he was very sure Rosalie had gotten her whimsy behavior somewhere else.
Though, thinking it over as he tucked her in, he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Rosalie?” it was getting warmer and warmer lately, and Rosalie had seemed to be getting older and older. It was the middle of May and lately Rosalie had been spending time in the backyard of his mother’s home. Angela had been taking up gardening lessons, she had been cultivating a rose garden in her mother’s backyard and Rosalie had taken great interest in it, more often than not she’d spend her hours with Aunt Angie in the backyard, bringing all of her attention on the lovely blooms, moment Ricky saw the familiar shade of pink on the roses when they started blooming, he froze.
Rose had been around seven at the time, at the time she had been learning to write in cursive (as recommended by Angela) and spending her days reading book after book in the dining room. It was almost dusk, the sun beginning to set over the neighborhood of Brooklyn, dinner was almost ready and Ricky knew, of course, Rosalie would’ve been in the backyard. Her back was turned from him, sitting with her legs crossed and chin on her palm, her elbow rested on her knee. Ricky stood by her, she stared at the rose bush, Ricky stiffened upon seeing those blush pink roses, trying to stop those painful memories from flooding in his brain, after a moment he knelt down next to her.
“Rosie,” he spoke, tone soft and gentle, “c’mon, mon ange, dinner will be ready in a few minutes.”
“Why do you call me that?” Rose asked, now turning her head towards him, her wide doe eyes now staring at him in an innate curiosity any seven year old has. Ricky furrowed his brow, tilting his head to the side. Growing up, Rosalie had been given an array of nicknames, NightNight called her Rosebud, Angela had called her Rosita, and Ricky, of course, called her Rosie, sometimes even her grandmother had called her Rosa. Ricky opened his mouth to speak, then closed it again, he wasn’t sure what else was an easier answer than well, your mother loved roses of course.
“Your…” Ricky’s voice trailed off, his fingers digging into the dirt without him knowing. The talk of her mother had always been a tricky subject, there was no way in God’s name would Ricky ever tell her what happened to Aimee, he always danced around it, giving a vague answer whenever Rosalie asked about her mother (“What happened to her?” “What was she like?” “do you think she would’ve liked me?”). Rosalie blinked, her eyes searching for an answer. Jesus christ, Ricky thought, she truly did look like her sometimes.
“When… when you were born,” Ricky began to explain, “me and your mother couldn’t decide on a name, and then your mother suggested that you’d be named Rosalie.”
 “But why?”
Ricky exhaled, his fingers now clawing at the soil wishing he could get out of his conversation and just get the damn table ready, “because, Rosie, your mother loved you. The moment she had you, she thought you were the most precious thing on Earth, so she named you after something she loved just as much as she loved you, so she named you Rosalie.” After a moment of silence, he squeezed his eyes shut, his tone feeling brittle and fragile. Please don’t make me cry in front of her, Ricky prayed, please.  “She thought you were such a beautiful little girl… so why not name you after a beautiful rose.”
After that conversation, Ricky and Rosalie had stayed quiet during dinnertime, only NightNight rambling on and on about a job promotion at the law firm much to Angela’s annoyance. By then, Ricky was tucking Rosalie in, the night light being the only thing that illuminated the room and the soft melody of the music box filling the glum quiet. Ricky found himself with shaky hands when he smoothed the wrinkles of her blanket.
“Papa,” Rosalie whispered, “can I ask you something?”
 “Hm?”
 “What is your name?”
Ricky blinked, and then he let out a laugh, “oh, Rosie, sweetheart, I can’t tell you that.”
“Why?” Rose furrowed her brow, gosh, did Ricky ever ask so many questions starting with why as a child of seven? He shook his head fondly, before placing a small kiss on her forehead.
“Get some sleep, okay? You have school in the morning.” Ricky stood up, using her bed frame for support as he got to his feet, Rosalie snuggled into her blanket, curling up with her head on her flower decorated pillow.
“Goodnight papa.” Rosalie said between a yawn, slowly drifting to sleep, Ricky leaned against her doorway, the light of the hallway outlining him like a shadow that was watching over a peaceful little sleeping soul. His expression was softened, eyes flickering with something mixed with hidden grief and delicate affection. His hand lingered on the doorknob, slowly making a soft creak as he closed it in front of him. He inhaled for a moment, and finally suspired.
“Goodnight, Rosalie, I love you.” Ricky mumbled, he backed away, fingers finally letting go of the doorknob, “and your momma loves you too, remember that, Rosalie.”
