I do want more Rick and Summer adventures but it was nice to get our boy back! I honestly didn't notice how much in the background he was until someone pointed it out, and it really didn't bother me. But watching this episode made me feel this fun warm nostalgia of the classic adventures and new developments. I mean this is awesome!
I'm very curious to see what the finale holds.
Tumblr media
Man, I did NOT realize how much I missed Morty until I watched "A Rick in King Mortur's Mort." If you've spent thirty seconds on my blog, you know that Rick is my favorite character. I like Morty, but I don't specifically watch the show for him. But his dynamic with Rick is brilliant, and separating them by putting Morty in the background could've been a fatal flaw if season six didn't start turning it around near the end.
When other characters appeared on the screen (especially in group family scenes) I thought "OK, let's not take too much attention away from Morty." I never thought I'd hear myself thinking that. I think that season six is great overall, but that actually made me look at it a little more critically. This show just does NOT work without Morty. Developing the family dynamic was great, but I'm hoping that the show will start focusing on the core characters again.
Anyway, this was a good episode. Like Morty, I kept waiting for the reveal that Rick was just being an asshole and letting Morty talk himself into a disaster so that Rick could save him and then hold it over his head for ages. I wasn't too worried since Rick's been changing so much and going to therapy, but it still crossed my mind.
Maybe Rick's still following Dr. Wong's instructions: being patient and watching events unfold instead of immediately reacting with anger.
Tumblr media
The callback to the infamous "The Vat of Acid Episode" blew me away. I didn't think the show would ever even mention it again. That episode was Rick at his worst: an abusive, sociopathic monster who emotionally destroyed Morty under the guise of being nice. So much of Rick's affection in seasons 1-4 was fake or manipulative. He did care for Morty, but boy, he didn't hesitate to smack him down and remind him who was the Rick.
I loved how the end of the episode paralleled the start of "The Vat of Acid Episode" perfectly. It's like this scene with Rick and Morty saying "I love you," grasping each other's hands and jumping willingly into the lava together undid all of Rick's cruelty.
Well...not quite. Which brings me to the one issue that I have with their relationship development: the show keeps acting like they needed to come to a mutual understanding, like their issues were partially Morty's fault. 99% of their problems came from Rick's bullshit.
Rick IS taking accountability, admitting that he fucked up and trying to do right by Morty. However, I think Morty needs to tear into him. In fact, it's a little unsatisfying that he doesn't. Rick needs to know how much he hurt Morty because that's the only way that Morty could ever find peace and Rick could even begin to atone for it.
I don't think Rick's trying to dodge responsibility. If Morty finally unleashed his rage, I think Rick would stand there and accept it. Maybe Evil Morty was supposed to be C-137 Morty's stand-in when he tore into Rick at the end of "Rickmurai Jack," but it's not enough because C-137's got personal issues with Rick that no one else has.
Rick's my favorite character, but--he deserves it. He took his shit out on that kid for way too long. Even once would have been too many times. I wish the show would let Morty seriously confront Rick about everything that he did.
Tumblr media
Also, Rick's still got a lot of work to do, but this episode left me wondering where they could go from here. Either Morty's going to start seizing control, or something huge is going to happen that shakes up the status quo.
Still, I enjoyed the sweet moments in this episode. Rick calling Morty "little junebug" was so unexpected, but so loving and sincere. He's called Morty "buddy" and "kiddo," but that's the first time he's given him an affectionate nickname like that. Sounds like something that he would have called Beth when she was little.
I was wondering when Rick and Morty would share an emotional hug (as opposed to the spontaneous one that they shared in "Get Schwifty" all those years ago), and there it was. Not the scenario that I expected, but Rick and Morty hugging while Rick assures him that "we're going to make your dick so fake" is perfect for this series.
And again, Justin Roiland does a great job. I love how he captures the gentle undertones in Rick's voice.
Tumblr media
Between Rick (basically) having two daughters in the house, trying to give Beth parental advice and showing Morty affection, it seems like he's learning how to be a father again. The way he extends his arms to Morty while shushing him looks so natural, like when he gently turns on Morty's goggles for him in "Full Meta Jackrick." He's reclaiming in his 70s what Prime Rick tore away from him in his 30s.
I also liked how this episode kept things fresh by returning to Earth's solar system. When Rick and Morty can visit infinite planets in infinite universes, what else is there to do? Return to an "ordinary" setting that they haven't spent much time in. This episode reminded me of "Something Ricked This Way Comes," which Rick mentions directly--another great callback to earlier seasons.
I noticed that Morty and Rick are continuing to gradually switch places. Morty's the one who suggests that they move to another dimension, and he says in the beginning that he wouldn't be too upset if he never saw his family again. Glad to see that he hasn't regressed back into being a passive little boy, which I was worried about.
Overall, this was a solid episode. I would've done a few things differently, but the writers have done a great job of pushing the show's boundaries and transforming the characters. Still, this upward growth can't go on forever, which makes me a little worried about what's coming next.

i am normal about this. im so normal about how morty hugs rick not expecting to be hugged back but clings to him and is comforted regardless. i am feeling so normal about how tiny he looks when they're that close together. how after everything that he's experienced, at the end of the day he really is just a kid and sometimes he needs his grandpa. im so fucking normal right now.

OKAY I NEED THIS FIC THOUGH
Morty kidnapping…… like we’re already BORDERLINE there in the show itself and this captures the way that Rick would totally do it sheerly out of principle. like. idk if you were planning explicit rickorty content in here OP but as written this feels totally canon. we could have an episode like this lmao. In fact maybe it would be a whole arc, where eventually Rick returns Morty for what the audience thinks is a genuinely contrite, emotionally intelligent reason, only for the classic RnM “this happened for a selfish reason actually” reveal to happen at the end like a punch in the face. And that would only happen because the show literally needs to keep other characters around to have them bounce off of and put conflict between them etc etc. but tldr, this concept taps into Rick’s control issues in a perfectly believable way.
the great thing is in fic world, Rick gets to keep him forever :) and I just think that’s neat :)
wow we really are connected telepathically what is going on here like
OKAY so I didn't want to hijack this post by @garmanarnarr but op and I are like, communicating telepathically at this point bc in like april i wrote this (unfinished) concept for a fic:
Δ14β9
"Bad Rick" dimension(alternatively, Good Beth dimension??)
Beth decided to put her foot down about Morty going on adventures. She decides enough is enough and Rick can no longer be trusted to keep Morty safe, so he's permanently grounded from anything off world. Rick can hang out with Morty either at the house or with direct supervision, but no more sci-fi bullshit trying to murder her son.
Rick seemingly concedes, saying it's Beth's son and while he disagrees, she knows whats best. Beth is skeptical, but takes her father at his word because what's he gonna do, kidnap Morty?
Two weeks later he kidnaps Morty. Morty is not Aware he has been kidnapped, he just thinks they're going on adventures behind Beth's back now, which he's pretty much fine with. He's fine with it until a few days later when he asks when Rick's gonna bring them back home, and he gets brushed off. He keeps asking, and Rick keeps deflecting or outright refusing to engage with the question. Morty digs his heels in after the third week, and Rick finally snaps and explains something along the lines of : He's not going back home, neither of them are, because Beth won't let him leave again with Morty, and Rick won't be without him. It's them against the universe now
Morty tries to reason with him, tries to get Rick to understand that he can't just not go back home. Rick won't hear it.
He could just get a new Morty, one that doesn't have a Beth who actually cares about him. But Rick doesn't want a new Morty, he wants his Morty. Rick isn't used to not getting what he wants.
Meanwhile Beth is tracking Rick and Morty, doing everything in her power to get her son back. She leaves Jerry to look after Summer and goes out into space, she even contacts an intergalactic federation agent to help her find Rick, since they'd be the most likely to have leads. It's hard work and every day that passes makes it more likely she'll never catch up to them, but she can try.

I may have written this out before, but I think the best case scenario if Harmon and Co. want to continue Rick and Morty indefinitely is to bring an end to Rick C-137 and Morty Prime's story in the next season or two and shift to following a Rick and Morty from another dimension.
This would a.) Give a satisfying conclusion to C-137's story (and a place people can jump off at if they choose) b.) Make sense in this world that the show has established and c.) Open up some storytelling dimensions that are currently off limits and allow for a sort of reboot.

I saw someone else on here saying how Rick needs someone with a different moral compass to go with him on adventures because otherwise it'd be an echo chamber of bad decisions, and thats why he brings Morty (very outspoken against him) rather than Summer (very often outspoken against him, however very much aligns with his violent impulses)
and I agreed with that, however I wanted to add my own theory as to why he brings only Morty, which kind of goes along with theirs.
I lost their post/url so I dont know who it is who posted that, but if I find it ill reblog with a link to their post, or if one of you find it youre welcome to do that for me !!
okay, so. it seems to me that another reason Rick would take Morty most times and not usually Summer is not only because Summer is more likely to become a moral echo chamber, but because Morty is the most likely in the family to not end up another Rick.
let me explain what I mean:
Rick has witnessed the citadel and how that ended up, he's implied to have witnessed the deaths of so many people (not just Ricks) for being too confident in their smarts. he knows that his life style kind of ruins you if youre as smart as he is because you start getting to know that you are.
this won't happen with Morty.
Morty is a lot of things; resourceful, highly adaptive, good in combat (when he can be), quick on his feet and passionate. but one thing he isnt, is like Rick.
Morty gets none of his traits from Beth or Rick. he isnt inhumanely smart (in fact its canon that he's quite the opposite), he isnt predisposed to being cold and uncaring, he isnt as impulsive (he still is, just not as much), the list goes on.
not only are Summer and Beth predisposed to end up like Rick, they have, on many occasions, acted exactly how Rick would've acted in situations. and to me, it seems like that scares him.
Morty however is very different to Rick, and Rick knows that very few Mortys ever end up even a fraction of the man he is.
Mortys are not predisposed to end up cold and uncaring, in fact Mortys are predisposed to be the exact opposite. Mortys are "hardwired for forgiveness." theyre empathetic, loving, forgiving. Mortys rarely harden into the kind of person Rick is, or the kind of person Summer and Beth would be.
Morty is the obvious answer to who Rick should rely on - he'll never be bad. Morty is good at his core. at least most of them are, of course just like there's outlier Ricks (c-137 himself), there's outlier Mortys, but as a general statement, Mortys are good at their core.
kind of off topic, but I also beleive that c-137 is good at his core.
let me explain.
he is, by admission, a different kind of Rick. he wanted to stay home, to be there for the girls, he was even willing to give up his dream of science just to be there for him.
when they died, so did a part of him.
he lost the love of his life, and he lost his daughter. he lost his perfect little family.
and what did he do ? go insane trying to find the person who did this to him, and get rid of them.
the things he did on the way were kind of a "in the grand scheme of things" type of situation.
again another blog already said this (here) (hopefully that worked), but when Prime said he c-137 could've been him- he already was. he was in the exact same situation that Prime was. he offered someone infinity, and they rejected it. but instead of going the way Prime did, which was killing the people around Bird Person to force him to travel infinity anyways, he just moved on. he got upset at first and tossed some weak insults, but he moved on. because, as the above post says, its not that big of a deal. it wasn't the end of the world for him.
now, im not saying c-137 has never done anything wrong. hes done a lot of things wrong. what I am saying is he's good at his core; his goal was never and still isn't just to hurt people. his goal is revenge and in his eyes, its a ticking time bomb. anyone in his way has to be swiftly dealt with because he's running out of time.
also - of course he can't show how much he loves Morty. he doesnt know if Prime is still watching him, but he does know that the Omega Device could very well still be on operation, and he finds out he was correct in this assumption in Ultmortricken.
if he had shown his love for Morty often at all, who knows what Prime would've done with that information.
