That Time Strange Boutique Played Just for Me

Richmond, Va - circa 1989.

One of my favorite bands of the late 80's / early 90's was Strange Boutique. They were out of DC, but they played in Richmond fairly often, as DC bands tend to do. They played at a club called The Metro, which used to be on Broad Street, so often that they practically became the house band. I think I saw them play there 6 times.

But I first saw Strange Boutique at The Metro by accident, getting my nights mixed up and seeing them instead of whatever band I thought I was going to see. Which turned out to be on of those Bob Ross happy accidents, because I immediately loved their music.

When I heard they were playing The Metro again, I made sure to be there, and here is where I had another Bob Ross happy accident. For some reason, I thought they were playing earlier than they really were, so I arrived way before I should have. I remember being puzzled that the place was deserted, with just a few folks at the downstairs bar, and no one upstairs. Then I saw a flyer for the show and realize I was there a hour early. Didn't feel like walking home, then coming back, so I just plopped down in the middle of the dance floor before the stage and waited. I figured someone I knew would come along shortly, and then I'd at least have someone to chat with.

And not 2 minutes after I sat on the floor, but Strange Boutique came out onto the stage. They picked up their instruments and did some quick tuning. Monica Richards waved to me. I waved back. What the hell? Then it clicked - sound check. I figured they'd make a few strums, a quick, 'Check, check, check!' or two, and that would be that.

They played 2 full songs.

And since I was the only one there, other than the sound guy on the mixing board, they played just for me.

I'm sure Strange Boutique did their sound checks to small, accidental audiences frequently, since they didn't much pay any attention to me, sitting there with my mouth hanging open, large pool of stunned drool accumulating around me - why, they likely thought I was just some special needs individual brought along by someone since I wasn't safe to be left alone. Who knows? If they thought anything, it was that I should probably be wearing a safety helmet, perhaps accompanied by a drool bucket. None of that takes away from my special, happy memory of that particular happy accident.

I never understood why Strange Boutique didn't become one of those bands like The Cure or Siouxsie and the Banshees who become huge. To me, they were just as good. Their CD's held privileged places upon my stereo for years alongside the titans of goth like the aforementioned Cure, and Siouxsie plus The Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, or Christian Death, to name a few.

And then one day, they lost that lofty position in my mind. I don't know why, but shortly after they broke up, the spell they had woven upon me seemed to break up as well. And then, I forgot about them to the point that over 20 years went by before I randomly heard one of their songs played on Dark Italia radio and I was instantly transported back to 1989, a flood of forgotten memories cascading into my thoughts. I actually drew a deep breath at all those memories that I'd shoved into a dark and spider-webbed corner of my brain - so completely out of the way that they were effectively lost.

But my rediscovered joy soon turned to sadness. A quick internet search revealed that Strange Boutique's guitarist, Fred "Freak" Smith, had died about a year before my rediscovery, explaining why the radio was playing Strange Boutique at all - it was the anniversary of his death. Of course, I missed out on the brief reunion of the remaining members of Strange Boutique for a one-of show in DC, but recently at Absolution Fest in Tampa, I met someone from DC who had been present for the reunion, and said it was epic. At least I got to hear about it from someone who was there.

Ironically, I had been living in LA's San Fernando valley at the same time as Fred, and didn't know it. In fact, I had moved away from LA just days before he died. He had apparently been homeless for years, for perhaps the entire time I was living there. I wonder if I could have walked right by him countless times, another faceless, nameless, homeless person in LA - there are over 60,000 of them - and never knew that I had passed right by a person who had helped craft the most amazing music. Someone who's unrestrained laughter could fill a room. Someone who had once played two songs just for me.

I now have all my fav Strange Boutique songs loaded onto my phone so I can listen whenever I want. They'll never again be forgotten like they once were and whenever I'm driving and one of them cues up from the thousand or so songs I keep on there, I smile and remember those fun times back at The Metro in the late 80's / early 90's. As I've mentioned on previous posts, I wouldn't want to live back then again, but I wouldn't mind visiting to catch a show or two. But no internet? No, thank you.

Eventually, once one reaches the age where one is referred to by the title of Elder Goth, tragedy has become an old acquaintance. If not exactly a friend, not exactly an enemy, either. Just...darkly familiar. So I keep my old, dark acquaintance to one side of me, and my joy at rediscovering long lost music to the other, and never shall the two meet.

Frances Gay, 99

Mrs. Frances Allie Curtis Brendle Gay, age 99 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2020, at Rose Glen Manor in North Wilkesboro.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, January 30, 2020 in the fellowship hall of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Brady Hayworth and Rev. Phil Chapman officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 prior to the service in the fellowship hall. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Gay was born January 17, 1921 in Wilkes County to Joel Curtis and Grace Viola Parsons Curtis. She retired from Wilkes Hosiery and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Frances lived served and honored the Lord her family and her community until God called her home at the age of 99.She was a second mother to her brothers and sisters and had a work ethic to provide. Frances read the Bible through 30+ times and was a former Sunday school teacher at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

She loved her care from her Home and family at Rose Glen Manor. She was known for her quick sense of humor and her strong independence. Frances loved spending time with her family and working crossword puzzles. She was loved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband; Ed Brendle and second husband; Lathian W. Gay, a sister; Grace Vaught, two brother; Junior Curtis and Edwin Curtis and a brother in law; Fred Ferguson.

She is survived by a sister; Helen Ferguson of Millers Creek and two brothers; Basil Walker and wife Gail of Hilton Head Island, SC and Bobby Walker and wife JoAnn of Wilkesboro, two sister in laws; Maxie Curtis of Millers Creek and Lou Curtis of Elkton, FL, a stepson; David Brendle and wife Frances of Greensboro and many nieces and nephews.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Mtn. Valley Hospice 401 Technology Lane Suite 200 Mt. Airy, NC 27030 or Rose Glen Manor 240 South Independence Ave. North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

Denise Eller, 63

Denise Eller, age 63, of Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, January 24, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. Denise was born February 7, 1956 in Wilkes County to George H. Eller, Jr. and Oma Jean Mitchell Eller. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. Denise loved to attend all the youth sports teams, attending all the games she was able. She was a big North High Vikings and a Carolina Tarheels basketball fan. Denise loved her cats and had a special love for all cats. Ms. Eller was preceded in death by her parents.

Surviving are her Aunt, Dare Cothren of Thomasville; Lots of Cousins; life-long friend, Pam Rhoades of North Wilkesboro; and her loving cat, Tempe.

Funeral service was January 28, at Bethel Baptist Church with Pastor Donnie Shumate officiating and eulogy by Randy Rhoades. Burial followed in Mountlawn Memorial Park. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, PO Box 679, Hays, NC 28635. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Pallbearers were Seth Rhoades, Mark Anderson, Neal Anderson, Joseph Edmiston, Kenneth Ireland and Joe Reeves. Honorary pallbearers will be Christopher Edmiston, Will Rhoades and Levi Rhoades.

Gladys Gilbert, 94

Mrs. Gladys Wilma Greer Gilbert, age 94 of Wilkesboro, widow of Bobby Gilbert, died Friday, January 24, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Health - Wilkes Medical Center.

Funeral services was January 27, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Sherrill Wellborn officiating. Burial was in the Full Gospel Mission Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Gilbert was born March 1, 1925 in Watauga County to Albert and Rebecca Carlton Greer.

Mrs. Gilbert was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bobby Gilbert; seven sisters, Edna Hampton, Maggie Clawson, Lily Triplett, Ora Watson, Bernice Cox, Ruth Miller, and Melba Hayes; and four brothers, Virgil Greer, Sherman Greer, Vaughn Greer, and Bynum Greer.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty Greene Keels and husband, Edward, of Wilkesboro; her son, Bill Greene and wife, Christine, of Wilkesboro; her four grandchildren, Debbie Blevins, Sandra Mastin, Lisa Austin, and Scott Keels; six great-grandchildren, Richard Shew, Zack Blevins, Patrick Blevins, Kayla Bennett, Chris Mastin, and Natasha Brown; and five great-great-grandchildren, Aliza Blevins, Forest Mastin, Finley Mastin, Tyler Brown, and Tristan Blevins.

Flowers will be accepted.

Ransome Patrick, Jr. 64

Mr. Ransome Joe Patrick, Jr. age 64 of Hamptonville, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2020 at his home.

Funeral services were January 25, at Reins Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Matthew Vannoy and Rev. Justin Norman officiating. Burial was in the Patrick Family Cemetery. Mr. Patrick was born June 1, 1955 in Wilkes County to Ransome Joe Patrick, Sr. and Oma Kathleen Smithey. He was the Vice President of Operations for Spevco, Inc. and a member of Welcome Home Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother; Charles Patrick.

Mr. Patrick is survived by a son; Sherman Joe Patrick and wife Nikki of North Wilkesboro, a daughter; Brandi Patrick and husband Freddie of Wilkesboro, six grandchildren; Taylor South and wife Emily, Garrett Patrick, Russell Patrick, Caydan South, Brody Patrick and Kaison Patrick, a great grandchild; Ransome Joe South, a sister; Kay Patrick Ashley and a brother; Scott Patrick and wife Jennifer of Clemmons and his devoted and loving girlfriend; Annie Lee Pierce of Jonesville.

Robert Vaught, 85

Mr. Robert James Vaught, age 85 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at his home.

Graveside services with Military Honors by the United States Army and Veterans of Foreign Wars was January 25, at Mountlawn Memorial Park with United States Army Chaplin officiating.

Mr. Vaught was born February 9, 1934 in Rural Retreat Virginia. He was retired from the United States Army after serving 20 years as a Platoon Tank Sargent during the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts. Mr. Vaught was an active member of the NRA and the VFW Post 1142 and retired teamster's long haul truck driver.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; Johnnie Culler Vaught and a sister; JoAnn Bess.

He is survived by a daughter; Regina Dawn

Vaught of Traphill, a son; John Ernest Vaught of North Wilkesboro, three grandchildren; Joanie Summer Vaught, Taylor Dawn Wiles and Johanna Hope Alexander, a great grandchild: Bailey Beatrice Wilson, a brother; Charlie Vaught of Georgia, a brother in law; Harry C. Steele of Winston Salem and several nieces and nephews.

Henry Blunt, 64

Henry "Petie" Carroll Blunt, age 64, of Millers Creek, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 21, 2020. He was born February 2, 1955 in Richmond, Virginia to Ashby Fernando and Ruby Gladys Mann Blunt. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are his siblings, Lorraine Smith of North Wilkesboro, Cecil Blunt of Millers Creek, Shirley Prescott and spouse Bill of Newport News, Virginia, Gladys Church of Millers Creek; many special nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; two great great nephews; aunts and cousins.

Graveside service was January 24, at Mountlawn Memorial Park. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Kristie Young, 64

Mrs. Kristie Lee Young, age 64 of Wilkesboro passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at Atrium Health in Charlotte.

Memorial services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Pastor Roger Hull officiating.

Mrs. Young was born February 12, 1955 in Davenport, IA to Evett Jerome and Shirley Mae Shoemaker.

In addition to her parents she was preceded by a sister; Gayle Davisson.

She is survived by her husband; Desmond Alan Young of the home, two sons; Derek Thomas Outlaw of Mission Viejo, CA and Douglas Neal Outlaw of San Antonio, TX, two step-daughters; Nicola Jayne Alexander and husband Steven of Wilkesboro and Adele Louise Wilson and husband Russell of San Diego, CA, six grandchildren; Scot Jackson and wife Kristen, Cody Jackson, Aaron Shaver, Laurel Angeline Wilson and Jacob Wilson and Serenity Mae Alexander, one great grandchild; Leighton Jackson and one brother, Bradley Shoemaker and wife Elaina of Cedar Rapids, IA.

Kyle Bumgarner, 77

Mr. Kyle Gentry Bumgarner, 77, of Millers Creek, passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2020.

Kyle was born on July 2, 1942 in Wilkes County to James Talmadge Bumgarner and Virchew Yates Bumgarner.

Kyle is preceded in death by his parents, step mother Odessa Pilkenton Bumgarner; brothers, JR, Howard, Wayne, Jim, Hobert Bumgarner; sisters, Ruth Bumgarner, Lois McGuire and Hazel Eller.

Kyle is survived by: his wife of 44 years, Betty Jean Wyatt Bumgarner; daughter, Sally Marshall and husband, Nick of Millers Creek; grandchildren, Keila Marshall of Louisana, Logan Eller of Moravian Falls, and Austin Marshall of Millers Creek.

The family conducted a memorial service at Union Baptist Church in Millers Creek with Rev. Steve Faw officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Adams Funeral Home of Wilkes P.O. Box 396 Moravian Falls, NC 28654 to help with final expenses.

Adams Funeral Home of Wilkes has the honor of serving the Bumgarner Family.

Jewell Lambert, 86

Jewell Gail Lambert, age 86, of Millers Creek, passed away Monday, January 20, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. She was born March 9, 1933 in Ashe County to George and Vergie Jones Eller. Mrs. Lambert was a member of Cricket Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband Vernie Lambert.

Surviving are her sons, Steve Lambert and spouse Kristie of Millers

Creek, Mark Rash of Wilkesboro; daughters, Carolyn Auville and Kitty Rash both of Millers Creek; sister, Charlene Lambert and spouse Gary of Hays; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Edna Watson, 96

Edna Key Blackburn Watson, age 96, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2020 at Westwood Hills Nursing and Rehab Center. Edna was born August 19, 1923 in Wilkes County to Clarence C. and Oma Haynes Key. She was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church and attended Bethel Baptist Church for many years. Edna loved making crafts, doing puzzles and walking. She worked for 30 plus years and retired from Modern Globe as an inspector. Mrs. Watson was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Senter Blackburn; her second husband, Paul Watson; brothers, Raymond Key, Ransom Key, Henry Key; and sisters, Betty Key and Ruth Absher.

Surviving are her sisters, Margie Shepherd, Mazie Miller, Virginia Dancy all of North Wilkesboro; brother, J.C. Key and spouse Marie of Greensboro; step-sons, Jimmy Watson and Larry Watson; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was January 23, at Miller Funeral Chapel with Pastor Donnie Shumate, Rev. Marvin Blackburn and Pastor Gene Shepherd officiating. Burial followed in Flint Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted. The family has requested no food, please. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Martha Nichols, 78

Martha Marler Nichols, 78, died Sunday morning at Mountain Valley Hospice in Yadkinville, NC, January 19 of cancer, surrounded by her family. She was a beloved wife, mother, aunt, cousin, grandmother and friend. Martha was born and grew up in Winston-Salem, NC the daughter of Ralph H. Marler and Jeanne Lalance Marler, a member of First Presbyterian Church, attended RJ Reynolds High School, and then Converse College in Spartanburg, SC. She married James P. Barksdale, JR of Rocky Mount, NC, a Presbyterian minister in 1962 and lived in Kannapolis, NC, Charlotte, NC, and North Wilkesboro, NC with churches that he was called to serve. After his death in 1981, Martha married Ward H. Nichols, a renowned artist and returned to live in North Wilkesboro, NC.

From the beginning of her adult life as a Presbyterian minister's wife, Martha was a devoted supporter of her husband and his career, but she also had outside interests and took art and history courses while in Charlotte and North Wilkesboro. An artist herself, she taught watercolor and drawing classes at Wilkes Community College, volunteered at the Wilkes Art Gallery and became the gallery's director in 1976. Following this work, Martha served as the Director of ExperienceWorks, the Director of Retired Senior Volunteers Program, a Commissioned Realtor with Caldwell Banker and Apple Realty, and lastly as the Marketing Director of Rose Glen Manor, the organization from which she retired.

When Martha's mother died, she became a consummate gardener to work through her grief and before limitations in her mobility, had over 200 roses in her garden, was an award-winning master rosarian and was a member of the Winston-Salem Rose Society and American Rose Society. Valentine's Day would signify the delivery of her roses to many friends and loved ones throughout Wilkes, Caldwell, and Forsyth Counties. Also inspired by her mother's lifelong hobby of quilting, Martha became more than an avid quilter, making over 50 quilts and prayer blankets, most of which she gave to friends in celebration of a joyous occasion, or to friends who faced serious or terminal illnesses.

In fact, Martha sought out people who were experiencing terminal illness, becoming their friend and counselor, and providing whatever comfort she could give. In 1980 when her first husband was diagnosed with cancer, Martha created what she called a home-grown hospice program since hospice was not yet widely available. This led to her contributions towards hospice in Wilkes County, culminating in 1984, first with a speech and presentation to a group of clergy from western NC and subsequently to another group of oncologists in the area. She became well known for her lecture, "The Impact of Cancer on the Family Unit: Psychological and Theological Emphasis" and sharing her experiences were instructive in enhancing their understanding.

The arts helped bring Martha and Ward together, and Martha's life with Ward provided another ongoing connection to the arts. Ward claims that Martha was his biggest advocate and supporter, often naming his paintings and providing constructive feedback. She also managed the business affairs of his work, helping to organize most of his shows and always serving as a consummate host to out of town guests and collectors. They were married for more than 35 years, and their lives included an international trip almost every year and to every state in the continental US. Ward and Martha were members of North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church and attended regularly, and Martha served as an Elder and on the membership and personnel committees. Martha's involvement in the community was extensive, and she was particularly proud of Vision2020, a long-range planning effort in Wilkes County during the 1990's. Ward and Martha also frequently visited Charleston, SC, West Virginia and Isle of Palms, where Martha's children would join them for a week at the beach.

While Martha had a full career and many interests and hobbies, she would claim her most important accomplishment was her family, with her first husband, Jim Barksdale and their three children, and then her marriage with Ward Nichols, which coincided in time with the arrival of her four grandchildren. Martha created an intimate family whose members have always deeply supported each other, teaching them how to love and to cherish, particularly during difficult times. Her values were very clear, she was a fervent advocate for the underprivileged, and donated her time and money to the homeless and the poor. Several causes stand out; she created the Ralph H. Marler, JR Award for the Wilkes Art Gallery in memory of her brother, and the Katie Fund for the Wilkes Animal Hospital in memory of her beloved cocker spaniel.

In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her first husband, Rev. James P Barksdale, JR and her brother, Ralph H Marler, JR. She is survived by her husband, Ward H Nichols; and her three children, James P Barksdale III, Elisabeth S Barksdale (Laura E Clay), and grandson, Kip H Barksdale, John M Barksdale (Katina M Barksdale), and grandchildren, Ellis A Barksdale, Finn P Barksdale, and Catherine M Barksdale.

A memorial service will be held on February 1 at 2:00pm, at the North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church, with a celebration of life to immediately follow in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to any shelter for the homeless, or to one of the funds inspired by Martha.

Thomas Eaton, 69

Mr. Thomas Frederick Eaton, age 69 of Kernersville passed away Sunday, January 19, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Funeral services were, January 24, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel. Burial with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 wasin Scenic Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Eaton was born June 12, 1950 in New Jersey to Henry J. and Regina K. Eaton. Mr. Eaton served in the United States Air Force from 1972 until 1980. He loved airplanes, the beach, Bugs Bunny, Disney World, his cats; Stars and Stripes, his family and friends. It seemed later in life his biggest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. He was formerly employed by RF Micro Devices.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife; Kathleen E. Yeashvich Eaton and his second wife: Cynthia Diane Eaton.

He is survived by sisters; Mary Anne Eaton, Susan J Locker and husband John, nephews; Eric J. Sneath, Christopher T. Sneath and wife Laurie, niece; Megan A. Locker, great niece; Sianna J. Sneath, sister-in-law; Joan Beem and niece; Karolyn B. Turcotte and husband Andre and their children; Sebastian and Sydney, step-daughter; Crystal Keener and husband Bucky, step-son; Jody Barbour and wife Anita and grandchildren; Kris, Harley, John, Olive, Emily, Gus and Charlie.

Flowers will be accepted.

Edward Brown, 44

Mr. Edward Kenneth "Kenny" Brown, 44, of Wilkesboro, passed away on Friday, January 17, 2020.

Kenny was born on March 27 1975 in Wilkes County to Kenneth Edward Brown and Shirley Louise Martin Brown.

Kenny is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Kimberly Dare Brown.

Kenny is survived by his sisters, Dawn Stanley (Ronnie) of N.Wilkesboro, Donna Byers of Wilkesboro; nieces, Shana Dollar (Robert), Melissa McGinty all of North Wilkesboro; nephew, Michael Byers (Olyvia) of Wilkesboro and good close friend Vera Vickers of Hickory.

The family conducted a memorial service January 25, at Westwood Hills Nursing Facility.

Rev. Steve Smith will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers donations may be given to the American Diabetes Association P.O. Box 11454 Alexandra VA, 22312 or a charity of the donor's choice.

Backstory:

Age 13

Fell out of tree

Caught by Haley who had believed she had caught a fairy.

Took Christina to her mom who told her to put it back, but She didn’t.

Kept Christina in a cage, but fed her well and showed great responsibility.

Watched the movie Tinker Bell a couple weeks later and showed sympathy of being locked up in a cage.

Let her out after Christina promised to come back.

It was a stable friendship. Haley still thought she was a fairy.

After Haley turned 16, her father told her what he did for a living: manage a Tiny Sports Track and Field team for the Southwestern part of the United States.

Haley got excited and showed him Christina and how good of a jumper she was.

Gerard was impressed at her high jump and he took measurements.

He took Christina in the middle of the night using a cage back to his job.

He then told Haley and his wife he was going on a business trip and would be back in a couple of days.

He sadly filed a divorce and left, banking everything on what Christina would make for him.

Without really much of a clue what was going on, Christina auditioned for the Tiny Track and Field team and was accepted immediately.

She was the oldest of her team, as she was accepted at 15 when everyone else was around 12.

Training was rigorous, nor did she have a say in what she would or wouldn’t do. She learned quickly not to refuse anything. She also learned, she would probably never get to see her family again.

She was able to throw her purpose and anger in the sport, making her an even better athlete.

The best jumper on her team.

Was made to swim but after almost drowning twice they stopped making her do it.

Can’t carry as much as a regular borrower, therefore was horrible at weights.

Can pole vault with the best of them.

Never received first place or a gold medal, but won second at least five separate times at different events.

Was able to scale an adult human from shoes to head in 5 seconds flat, just by jumping. Held that record for a year before some other tiny in South Asia broke it.

Continued competing and training until three months after she turned 19, she fractured her right hip after missing the mat from extremely high pole vault jump.

Was told she would most likely never be able to jump like she used to. She got angry and refused to listen to doctor’s orders. She wanted to prove that nothing like a small break could stop her.

She was put on the back burner of her team to give her time to heal. But she was too impatient, and injured her hip even further.

Gerard eventually decided to pull her off the team seeing as she wasn’t going to be of any use anymore. She had served her purpose and there were some much younger recruits anyways. She pleaded with him not to, but he didn’t actually care what she thought.

He saw an ad for a humane society (or what he thought was a humane society) for tinies down in Gainesville, Florida and sent her to it without so much as a goodbye. With a still injured hip mind you.

Without a purpose in life, she was extremely depressed and stand-offish when she arrived at the sanctuary.

She wasn’t very responsive and would drink or eat hardly anything.

After being diagnosed with her injury, she was told to go to physical therapy with Larry at least once a week. She didn’t want to, but after the first session she already felt better.

As the weeks go by, she continues to grow stronger in her identity as an ex-athlete, and as a member of her new borrower family.

Future things:

She will reunite with her younger brother Tyrus later on, whose location is currently unknown.

Her mother disappeared and will never be heard from again.

Haley now knows the difference between fairies and tinies and visits the sanctuary once every three months.

Her mother got remarried to a mechanic who is a Borrower’s rights advocate and has offered to partner with Thomas in any way he can.

How do you celebrate Independence Day? I am sure that is something connected with your family and friends: trip to the lake, BBQ cookout, watching fireworks in the evening. There are many great and heartwarming activities that you can involve yourself into on 4th of July. ⠀ 1️⃣ Secret Box with an American flag is a great way to make a gift for someone on the 4th of July. First of all, it is an amazing and practical thing — as with many other secret boxes — you can store something precious inside and no one will be able to access it unless they know the trick of the box. ⠀ 2️⃣ Cast Helix is an amazing piece by Hanayama. Looks like a star so it is reminiscent of a Star-Spangled Banner for me. You will definitely spend some time on this one, but the trick of the puzzle is super rewarding and interesting. ⠀ 3️⃣ The Eagle is the symbol of American people and of course it cannot be held in a cage. It needs to soar free. The puzzle will let you fulfil the Eagle’s dream and release the bird from the captivity. ⠀ 4️⃣ Lincoln Memorial is an enduring symbol of freedom and hope. Of course, it is always great to have a small copy of such a legendary building on your shelf, let alone being able to assemble it yourself. 3D Jigsaw Puzzles are very popular nowadays and a much more interesting playtime them usual jigsaw puzzles. ⠀ 5️⃣ A replica of a real Confederate Army Cipher Disk. As Museums and Galleries reopen around the world, visitors will face new rules.

Institutions emerging from the coronavirus lockdown are reconfiguring spaces to keep employees and the public safe. The new rules will be similar to the one now applied at the grocery stores and at the pharmacies...

As museums and galleries around the world prepare to reopen in coming weeks and months, most are still puzzling out how to protect employees and visitors from the coronavirus.

They are mapping out different scenarios, depending on how the pandemic has affected their regions. Museums in hard-hit cities like New York, Baltimore and Los Angeles say they don’t expect to open until late summer or early fall but the Houston Museum of Natural Science plans to reopen May 15.

Many museums said they probably won’t be part of the early phase of reopening, when some barber shops and nail salons resume business. Instead, they will wait a few weeks to see if virus cases climb again. Graham Boettcher, executive director of the Birmingham Museum of Art, said he has no plans to reopen in May, even if Alabama authorities say the state is ready. “I don’t want to open until we have everything in place,” Mr. Boettcher said.

When and if visitors do arrive, they are likely to find museum lobbies, cafes and galleries that look and feel different. The Birmingham Museum of Art is considering sending visitors on guided paths by putting down vinyl stickers on the floors like some supermarkets do, so people don’t bump into one another. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is removing wall labels so visitors don’t cluster around them, instead directing people to a mobile app.

Clear plastic panels are going up in front of admissions desks at the San Antonio Museum of Art, and hundreds of thousands of masks have been ordered by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to hand out when it reopens, likely in early July. Stephen Bonadies, a chemist and art-conservation expert who helps oversee the collections at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, developed an algorithm to determine how many people the Richmond, Va., museum can safely handle in several rooms exhibiting “Treasures of Ancient Egypt: Sunken Cities”—130 an hour, down from a typical rate of 400, said director Alex Nyerges.

Michael Govan, director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, said he has one solution to post-lockdown concerns. The elevator at Lacma’s Broad Contemporary Art Museum is 21 feet wide, he said: “Perfect for social distancing.”

Some museums intend to focus on outdoor areas first even as their doors remain closed, for now. The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art likely won’t reopen until June. Before then, the Bentonville, Ark., institution plans to capitalize on its 120-acre grounds by offering self-guided hikes along 5 miles of trails that offer “cathartic forest bathing” and tours of its outdoor sculptures, said Rod Bigelow, the director. Even after Crystal Bridges opens its main buildings, it won’t reopen a Frank Lloyd Wright house on site as well as a mirrored room installation by Yayoi Kusama because “they’re so tight,” Mr. Bigelow said.

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art may be closed, but it plans to invite the public to stroll its 5 miles of hiking trails that lead past outdoor sculptures like Buckminster Fuller’s ‘Fly’s Eye Dome.’

Officials from at least a dozen museums in New York meet weekly online to share ideas. Two directors in the group said they are taking cues from retail and real-estate industries about steering crowds safely through bottlenecks like coat checks, gift shops and stairs.

Most galleries across the U.S. remain closed. A handful, including Gagosian, have opened their Hong Kong showrooms, by appointment. All are bracing for overall lower attendance and tighter budgets during a year without art fairs or fund-raising galas. “Everybody is trying to take aim at a moving target, so you have to be nimble,” said dealer Larry Gagosian. “You can’t just flip a switch.”

Unlike stadiums or theaters, some art museums and galleries are well-suited to social distancing. Visitors tend to stroll through on their best behavior and are used to being monitored by guards. Science, history and children’s museums may face a tougher reopening challenge because many reworked their exhibits in recent years to be more interactive. “It’s ironic because we’ve been told to create as immersive an experience as possible, and now that push is coming back to bite us,” said Jennifer Martin, a museum consultant. “We need to be OK with closing rooms and taking things away.”

The Oakland Museum of California said it identified 178 “high-touch” elements across its exhibits, from touch screens to make-and-take crafting stations in its new children’s area. “Now we have to rethink it all,” said Director Lori Fogarty. Before the shutdown, California Science Center’s Lego-themed show, “The Art of the Brick,” invited visitors to build their own structures. Now, Jeffrey Rudolph, the president, said, the museum is cordoning off the hands-on portions of the Lego exhibit and plans to offer free take-home activity kits instead. Timed entry, touch-free transactions and masks for staff and visitors also are being considered before reopening, he said, and greeters may don astronaut helmets over their masks to appear more child-friendly.

The art market is also reeling from the pandemic. Most galleries and museums closed abruptly in March, in some cases leaving art in crates on the floors. Yoshitomo Nara’s exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art was half-installed when the looming shutdown drove the artist to return home to Japan.

Mr. Gagosian said his 17 galleries are finding buyers for new works under $1 million by coveted artists like Stanley Whitney and Sarah Sze. However, resales of some older, pricier works have slowed in part because collectors can’t view canvases up close. Auction houses say they are succeeding with online art sales below $5 million, but the real test will come once Sotheby’s and Christie’s revive their live sales of big-ticket items in New York in late June. For now, both houses have furloughed some staff.

Smaller galleries said they need to reopen soon or risk closing for good. Miami dealer Fred Snitzer said his private sales remain steady, but half his sales are made at art fairs around the world—a circuit that is likely to remain at a standstill over the summer and possibly into the fall. Overall, galleries in North America expect to lose about 72% of their annual revenue this year due to the crisis, according to a survey conducted in early April by the Art Newspaper and Rachel Pownall, a professor of finance at Maastricht University School of Business and Economics.

Museums nationwide in US are losing $33 million a day during the lockdown, according to the American Alliance of Museums, which told Congress in March that nearly a third of U.S. museums, mainly in small and rural areas, might close if they don’t receive aid.

Particularly vulnerable are companies that organize and rent elaborate traveling exhibitions, such as shows of memorabilia connected to the Titanic or ones of artifacts used by the Vikings. Ms. Martin, the museum consultant, said museums that typically book these shows four years out are canceling, and “the next two years are in flux.”
