Jonathan, his dresser Hayley King and producer/director Richard Jay-Alexander after the Christmas Eve matinee of Merrily. Richard’s review on Facebook:
I just saw the Christmas Eve matinee of Merrily We Roll Along on Broadway and my heart has exploded! What I witnessed this afternoon was extraordinary. You could hear a pin drop and not a cough to be heard for the entirety of both acts. The production is as close to perfect as one could ever possibly be and the temperature of the piece is right at the edge of boiling water or the popping of a cork. Then .... the eruption. I was in total tears, as the complexity of both the ideas here and the score were in a perfect harmony. The performances are off-the-hook and the entire cast are in alignment with crystalline clarity. But I'd be doing an injustice if I were not to heap praise on the extraordinary Jonathan Groff and the gravitas he is anchoring this show with. It is an emotional roller coaster and I cannot recommend it highly enough! GO! They just extended the limited run. It was the perfect show on a perfect Christmas Eve and there is nowhere in the world I would rather have been that at the Hudson Theatre, on Broadway, this afternoon. Beautifully directed, with a sublime orchestra, thrilling musical direction and wardrobe design, sound, lighting .... ALL OF IT!

You took a deep breath with your hand on the handle of the thick auditorium door. You can do this you thought to yourself. You haven’t been to a supernatural con in almost 6 years, and you didn’t think you’d ever be going to one another one. You push the doors open and the sounds of the crowd almost burst your eardrums. Everyone was talking, and excited, but your stomach was doing backflips the whole way to your seat. You felt so out of place. You thought about turning around and leaving, but you had a job to do and would get it done. You made it to your seat. First row, right in front of him. Your designated seat in the past. Of course, Eric would buy that seat. You rolled your eyes as you sat down.
Rob Benedict walks out on stage after his other bandmates. The crowd went absolutely bunkers. “Alright Vegas, are you ready?” Rob asked. The crowd went wild. You let your mind wander as Louden Swain starts their setlist.

Year 2006:
“I don’t think I can do this.” A nervous Jensen admitted walking up to the curtain on the stage between you and Jared.
“Jay, you got this,” Jared assured him.
Jensen took a deep breath. “Did you get the seat?” He looked over to you.
“Yes, I’ll be right in front of you. When you get nervous or overwhelmed just look down and I’ll flash you or something.”
Jensen let out a laugh lifting his face.
“Um, (y/n) I’m feeling a bit nervous too. “ Jared professed
You and Jensen glared at him. “I think you’ll be alright.” You told him walking over to the  stage entrance
“You guys got this.” You kissed Jensen on the cheek. “I love you both.” You then kissed Jared on the cheek. “Have fun!!” You said as you turned to walk away.
“Love you too.” They said at the same time. You could hear the boys talking, but you couldn’t make out the words.
Lily was standing by the wall. She started walking with you as you passed. “Are you ever going to tell him how you feel?” You rolled your eyes and looked back at Jensen.  He blew you a kiss and mouthed thank you. You nodded and gave him a smile.
“Probably not.” You said facing forward and continuing walking.
“Why the hell not?! You two would be so cute.” You sighed. “I mean you’re practically dating already.”
“Lily, leave it alone.” You said as you got to the door. You pushed the door open and walked into the auditorium, energy pulsating through the air as the fans waited for Jensen and Jared to come out on stage. You found your seat and sat down. Lily sat down next to you. They came out behind the curtain dancing as the band played their intro song.
Tumblr media
The band starts playing Anyway You Want It by Journey bringing you out of your memory. “You guys really for them?” Rob asked and then started to sing the lyrics. Your heart hastens and you can hear it in your ears. Of course, Jensen and Jared come through the curtain dancing like the total goofballs that they are. Some things just never change you thought to yourself.  You didn’t realize how much you missed this and them, the 3 of you were so close. Now you are just one of the ex-cast personal assistants of Supernatural. It broke your heart when you left the set, but it broke your heart more to be around him daily. They do their famous stage jump with Rob as the band hits the last chord.
“Should we make this official?” Richard Asked.
“Yes,” Jared answered, and Jensen nodded his head.
“Las Vegas and the surrounding counties, please welcome Mr. Jensen Ackles and Mr. Jared Padalecki.”
They bowed and sent kisses to the crowd then pointed at each other. “Have at ‘er boys,” Richard says as he shakes their hands and heads off the stage.
“Thank you to... Wait what was his name?” Jared jokes. Rob whispers in his ear. “Err Speight. Thank you, Richard Speight.” The microphone starts whining and the boys start holding their arms out and spinning them trying to get it to stop. Rob realized he had left his mic on, and he ran back on stage to turn it off.
“It's fixed! It’s fixed!” He yells at them as he runs back off stage.
“Rob Benedict, everyone!” Jensen says as he looks down. You didn’t think he could see you with all the lights pointed at him, but his jaw dropped and then his face lit up. He got Jared’s attention and pointed right at you. Jared yelled your name and waved. Welp, I guess he saw me. The microphone starts whining again, and they make a close encounter joke. Jared makes the theme noises.
“Hi, guys!” Jared said after the whining sound stopped.  They welcome and thank the crowd after a lot of friendly banter between them. Then after some talk about Jared’s party patches.  They finally get to questions. After three questions you hear yelling and cursing coming from the section to your right.
“FUCKING SAM AND DEAN. YOU ALWAYS DID LOVE THEM MORE THAN ME.” He yelled, slurring his words. You could tell he’d been drinking. "I BRING YOU TO THIS STUPID CON THING AND YOU DON’T  PAY NOT ONE OUNCE OF ATTENTION TO ME. IT'S ALL ABOUT THESE PRETTY BOYS"
“Sir.” Jared tried to diffuse the situation.
“WHAT ASSHOLE?”  Jensen rose to his feet. The man said as he stood up. “I’LL WHIP YOUR PRETTY BOY ASS?”
You quickly jump out of your seat and motion for Jensen to come to you. He walked over and squatted down.  “Where’s Abby?”
Jensen looks around and points at her as she walks up to you.
“Hey Ab. I think the boys should go backstage until this is handled.”
“You can still read my mind (y/n)” Abby handed you a crew pass “Here take the boys backstage. I have a feeling we will  have to call the police.”
“No,” Jensen said.
“Jensen please, we don’t want some drunk hurting you or Jared.” You tried to convince him.” And God forbid you catch an assault charge because of him.”
“I’m not gonna fight.” You raised an eyebrow at him. “I won’t start the fight.
“Please” You pleaded.
“I SHOULDN’T HAVE LET YOU COME TODAY. YOU AREN’T A GOOD WOMEN. ALWAYS PUTTING SAM AND DEAN’S PUSSY ASSES BEFORE YOUR HUSBAND. WHAT A WHORE.”
Jensen’s jaw tightened and he jumped back to his feet. You yelled at Jared, you pointed at him then Jensen, then to the backstage area.  Jared walked up and nudged Jensen “Come on man. Let’s go backstage and let security handle this.”
Jensen put his mic up to his mouth. And the crowd gasps. “Listen, guys... Hey!!” Jensen yelled into the microphone. The man had backhanded his wife, and you look over in time to see the man trying to rush the stage.  A hurtful cry comes through the speakers as Jensen throws down his mic and jumps down from the stage. You caught him before he got far. You put your hands on his chest and tried to hold him back.
“Jensen please.” You pleaded as you struggled. You grabbed his face with both hands and made him look at you. “Come on please.” His jaw was still clenched, and his fists still held tight fists, but he stopped fighting you.  “Ross.” His eyes dropped to yours and he wrapped his hands around your wrists. “Let’s go backstage.”
“One second.” He said looking over your head.
“Jens..’”
He cut you off. “I’m good, Babes.” You guys watched as the security guards zip-tied the man’s hands behind his back and took him into the lobby. “he’s gone. I wanna make sure she’s ok.”  He grabbed your hand and started walking. Your feet didn’t move.
“I’ll go, but I can’t.” You shook your hand out of his. He looked at you with disappointment in his eyes and slowly nodded. “Come on.” You started walking up the aisle and he followed you.
“Is she ok?” Jensen asked Abby once you got to her. Jared walked up beside you and tugged on your hair. You rolled your eyes and shook your head.
“I’m ok,” the lady said as she held her cheek.
“I think we should still have the EMTs check her out, Ab” Jared said
“Yes, they are on their way now. “
Jensen sat down in the empty seat beside her. “What’s your name?”  Taking the icepack from Abby and putting it on her cheek.  Abby walked to the aisle to talk to one of the police officers. They started pulling witnesses for their statements.
“Uh. Em. Emily” she stuttered
“You sure you’re ok, Emily?” She turned pink when Jensen said her name.
“Yes, I am fine.”
The EMTs walked up. “Will you let them check this out?”
“It’s really not necessary, Mr. Ackles.” She reassured him.
“Please for me?” she nodded. You rolled your eyes, and Jared nudged your arm with his elbow. You looked at him with knitted brows.
“Be nice." He whispered. You felt the urge to roll your eyes again but held it back. Jared tilted his head and started walking. You took the hint and followed him “I was scared there for a minute.” He said after you guys walk a couple steps away.
“Yeah, me too.” You confessed.
“I swear you’re the only person that can get him to calm down when he’s that pissed off.”
“Aw is he immune to the puppy dog eyes, Padalecki?” you teased.
Jared rolled his eyes. “Not yours apparently.”
“Trust me. It’s been proven that he is.” Jared furrowed his brows, but you just shook your head and walked away.
Well, I guess Jensen never told him you thought as you walked back to stand beside Abby. Jared followed.
The EMTs looked her cheek over and determined there were no fractures or teeth damage, but there
might be a slight bruise. “Thank you,” she said as they packed their bags up.
“Not a problem.”  They said as they walked away.
Just then a Police officer walked up “I think we got statements from just about everyone. Did you guys see anything?” He looked at you then Jensen, Then Jared.
“Yea. We were on stage. You could tell he was drunk the way he was yelling. He started cussing, threatened him.” He pointed at Jared “I could see her lips moving, I assumed she was trying to get him to calm down, and then he slapped her.”
The officer turned to Jared. “Yeah, that’s what I saw too.”
The officer turned to you. “I didn’t see it, but I think it’s obvious what happened.”
“Ma’am, can I have a word with you.?”
The woman looked so nervous. “Want me to go with you?” Jensen asked her.
“Oh no, Mr. Ackles. You are supposed to be answering questions right now.”
“It’s Jensen.” He looked at you.
“I can go with you if you want Emily.”  You offered.
“You don’t have to do that.” She said.
“I really don’t mind, come on.” You gestured for her to go ahead.
He nodded and got up. “Thank you,” she said as she passed.  You walked with her out to the lobby and the boys went back to the stage.
As you walked into the lobby Emily started looking around. “Ma’am we put him in the backseat of the cruiser. He can’t hurt you now.”
She started to tell the officer what had happened. Her voice started to crack, and you put your arm around her shoulders for support. You helped her get through everything and then she explains this isn’t the first time. Your heart broke for her. “Would you like to press charges?” She looked at you.
“It's up to you, but if it was me I would. You don’t need that in your life.”
She looked back at the officer. “Yes sir.”
“Ok well, you probably paid a pretty penny for this show, so go enjoy and you can stop by later. I’ll be there all night. If you need anything before that here’s my card. Don’t hesitate to call.” He handed her his card and walked back over the door with you two. She thanked him as he opened the door. “No problem.”
“You can have my seat, I can watch from the sides.”
“You really don’t have to.” But you were already leading her passed where she was sitting.
“Hey, there she is!” Jensen said into the mic as he noticed the two of you. “Everything good?” you gave him a thumbs up as you her to your seat and sat her down. They continued asking questions.
You took a knee in front of her “Let me see your phone.” You put your number in after she handed it to you. “There’s my number if you need anything text me, ok?”
“Thank you (y/n) for everything.”
“you’re welcome, Emily. Have fun,” you walked to the side of the stage.
Abby was standing there. “Let her through.” She told the security guards. You thanked them as they let you through the gate. “Just like riding a bike huh?”
“Yeah, I guess so.”
“So why are you here?” You looked at her with wide eyes. “Not that I’m not happy to see you. I just thought you were done with the whole Supernatural scene.”
“Work. “
“Ahh, how is the big boss?”
“He’s alright. Stressed at the moment.”
“Ha. When is he not.” Someone called for her over the walkie. She took a couple steps back. “Hey, I gotta go check on something in the back. Can you wrangle the boys and get them to their photo op for me? I bet they’d love that.”
You sighed “Sure.”
“Thank you.”
“No problem.” She turned and walked away. You watched Jared and Jensen answer questions and joke with their fans. Richard and Rob came back on stage seeing the last question song.  Jensen started singing with them as Jared moved their chairs and brought the fan onto the stage. The lady was so excited. After joking with the boys she asked her question. The boys answered. They hugged and thanked her. Richard and Rob started singing again. Jensen joined in after hugging the fan.
“I just wanna say guys we wouldn't be anywhere without you.” Jensen nodded along as Jared continued. “So thank you. We love you. See ya later guys.” They both wave and blow kisses. Jensen points at you and then to the back. You nod and head that way.
“(Y/n)!!!!” Jared yelled as he ran down the hallway to you. You were in his arms twirling around before you could even say anything.
“Jared, put me down.”
“One more time.” Jared spun around one time and put you down. “Why didn’t you tell me you were coming today?”
“Well, it was kind of a hasty decision. Lily was supposed to come, but she had a family emergency. So I got sent here.”
“Why?” Jared asked.
“For me,” Jensen said.
“ Ya know you could just say yes and make my job a lot easier.” You said turning to him
"Yeah, but what’s the fun in that.” You rolled your eyes as he chuckled.
“ Well, well, well. Look who it is.” Richard said dramatically as he walked up behind Jared.
You smiled. “Oh my gosh, it’s Richard Spade Jr” You mispronounced his last name on purpose.
“I never knew how much I missed that until right now.” He said walking towards you with open arms. You stepped towards him returning the gesture. “how long has it been?”
“5 and a half years,” Jensen answered in a dejected tone.
“Damn. Well, you look great, my dear.” He said as he released you.
“Thanks. Spade you don’t look awful yourself.”
He chuckled. “A bunch of us are going down to the bar for drinks tonight. You should come. I know everyone would love to see you again.”
“Eh,” Jared shot you his puppy dog eyes. “Damnit Padalecki! I’m in.”
Richard turned to Jared with his fist up. Jared bumped it with his. “see you guys later.” Richard said as he walked away.
“So, photo op?” you asked. You spun on your heels and started to take a step.
“Yeah, but I gotta grab something real fast. I’ll meet y’all there.” Jared said. You sighed quietly as he walked away.
“So, this isn’t awkward,” Jensen said sarcastically.
“Pretty sure talking about how awkward it is makes it worse. “ You started walking.
“I tried to call you. “ Jensen said catching up to you.
“I know.” You admitted.
“so you were ignoring me.”
“What did you expect Jensen?”
“Yeah. “ He sighed. “I get it.” You walked in silence for a couple minutes. “ How have you been?”
“Good.”
“That’s all I get?” He grabbed your arm stopping you. “ Look I know I fucked up and I know you hate me, but if we are going to work together again we are going to have to find a way to be civil with each other.”
“If I hated you I would have let you get arrested today.” He gave you a little smile.
“But twice Jensen.” He gave you a puzzled look. “You fucked up twice.” You said heavy-hearted and continued walking.
Tumblr media
“Damnit Jared Where are you?” you thought out loud as you whipped your phone out of your pocket.
“I’m sure he’s close,” Jensen said trying to calm you down.
“ Call Jared.” You said into your phone.
“I’m right behind you. (y/n) calm down.” Jared yelled from behind
“I’m not even working this event and y’all are gonna get me in trouble.”
“Nice to see you haven’t lost your Texan roots there, sweetheart,” Jensen said and you glared at him.
You opened the door, and the long line of people started cheering. Abby was already there. “You guys are late.” Jensen and Jarod walked up to the backdrop and started greeting fans.
“It’s the tall one’s fault.” You said standing beside her
“Somethings never change. You sure you and Jensen weren’t making out in the hallway again.”
“Abby.” You said through gritted teeth
“Sorry. Sore spot got it.”
“Is that?” You heard an angel’s voice with a Scottish accent.
You turned around. “Ruthie!”  she started walking quickly toward you and you squeezed her tight meeting her halfway. “Ruthie I am so glad you’re here.” You tried to hold back the tears.
“Come with me, love.” She kept one arm around you and took you to the hallway. “What’s going on? Are you back?”
“No. I’ve been working with Eric on The Boys. He wants Jensen to play this part. Eric sent me here to try to convince him to say yes.”
“Why the hell would he send you with everything that happened?”
“Lily was supposed to come, but she had a family emergency. He didn’t have anyone else. Plus, I get to see all of you guys. So, it’s really not that bad. Jensen and I just got in a little tiff before we came out here and being face to face with him again. Even after 6 years. And I’m pissed off it still hurts.” A tear rolled down your cheek.
“I know Babes. “She hugged you again. “Are you gonna be able to work with him again, if he does say yes?”
“I’m gonna have to. I’m finally writing Ruthie. You sighed. “I wish that night never happened. I should have kept my big dumb mouth shut.”
“They say it’s better knowing than not.” She sighed. “But I think that’s a bunch of bullshit.” She said making you chuckle. “I wish there was something I could do for you. my dear.”
“This helps. “
She squeezed you tighter. “I know this is hard for you, but I am very glad to see you. These things aren’t the same without you.”
You smiled. “I miss you too, where were you headed?”
“I have a panel in a few minutes.”
“You should go I’ll be fine.”
“Everyone is going out tonight.”
“I know. Richard and Jared already got me to agree to come.”
“You sure you’re, ok?” you nodded. “I’ll see you tonight.” She hugged you one more time and kissed your cheek.
“Have a good panel,” you said, and she smiled at you as she walked out the door. You leaned your back on the wall and slid down until you hit the floor.
You heard the door open, but you didn’t look up. Misha sat in front of you with his face in his hands.
“Whatcha doin'?”
You couldn’t help but smile. “Just admiring this hallway.”
“It’s a very nice hallway, but I think you’re lying.”
“Misha, I don’t wanna talk about it.”
He stood up and put his hand out “Ok then, Let’s go drink.” You smiled and took his hand. You forced yourself not to look in Jensen’s direction as you and Misha made your way through the lobby.
“So, I have a question.” You said hopping on the barstool. “How did you know I was in the hallway?”
“A little bird asked me to come check on you.” he got the bartender’s attention. “You still drink your whiskey neat?”
“Yes, please. Are you done for the day?”
“Yep. I’m all yours,” he ordered your drinks. “How is work?”
“It’s going well. I am a paid writer now Mish.”
“(y/n)!! That’s incredible, kiddo. I am so proud of you.”
“How’s everything with you?”
“Good. Gish is going to start soon. I am writing a poetry book, and Vitoria and I are working on a cookbook,”
“Fun. How’s Random Acts?”
“Oh, it’s great. Thank you, by the way. Don’t think I don’t notice your monthly donations”
“No thanks needed. I’m happy to help.” The bartender sat down 2 whiskeys in front of you  “You drinking whiskey now?”
“I do occasionally and I’m not gonna let you drink alone.” You clicked glasses with him and you both took the shot. “I should go slow though. It’s been a while.”
You tapped your glass when the bartender looked your way, he nodded and poured another round for you. “Thank you,” you said as he sat the second glass in front of you.
“Well, I see we are pre-gaming over here,” Richard said as he walked up to you.
“Have to if I gotta deal with the Supernatural cast tonight.” You teased
“Oh, come on. You know you miss us Ms. Paid writer.” You gave him a puzzled look. “Jared told everyone all about it.”
“Of course he did.” You sipped your drink this time.
Richard sat down on the other side of Misha and ordered his drink. Misha leaned back in his chair. “Don’t be mad. He’s happy for you. We all are. “
“I know.”
As the events of the day ended more of the cast and crew walked into the bar area. “You want another one?” The bartender asked you.
“Um, I’m gonna slow down. I’ll take a bud light.” The bartender went to get you one “I don’t wanna get Bello drunk.”
Misha and Richard laughed. “Do you remember the first year we went?”
You smiled and nodded “When Jared almost got arrested?”
“Jared almost got arrested?” Richard asked.
“Rich you should have seen him. He was so trashed. He kept screaming...”
“BELLO” you and Misha yelled and then started laughing.
Just then you felt arms wrap around you from behind. “I didn’t believe Ruthie, but you are here.”
“Oh. Mama Kim? You stood up and squeezed her.
“THE PARTY IS HERE!”  You heard from the doorway. You look over to see Jared, Jensen, and Mark walking in the door. Everyone laughed. Jensen looked you in the eye and you could see his concern. He raised his eyebrows, and you nodded letting him know you were ok. The bartender sat your beer in front of you stealing your attention.
“Thank you.” The bartender nodded. Your eyes went back to the same stop, but he was already on the other side of the bar.
“(y/n) You’re already 2 whiskies in?” Jared asked.
“Misha ordered them.” He looked over at Misha who just shrugged. “Better catch up Padalecki.”  You teased.
You jumped as a piercing scream pierced your eardrums. “Y/N!!” You didn’t even have to look you know it was Briana. She ran up to you and practically jumped on you. “Oh my god! Look at you. You look so great and pretty.”
“And deaf now. Thank you.”
“You’ll be fine. Tell me everything. Kim told me you have a new man” Briana was still yelling.
You looked at Kim “I do?”
“Well last time I called you, you were with a man.”
“Karl?” you started laughing. “No.”
“Well, you guys were out to lunch. At a very nice restaurant.”
“Oh, my alert the media.” You rolled your eyes. “Doesn’t mean he’s my new man.”
Your eyes scanned the room and stopped at Jensen who was sitting alone. “Jared.”  You pulled him down to you. “Go sit with him.” You whispered into Jared’s ear.
“Or you guys can pin what the hell is going on between you and we could all hang out like old times.”
“Jared.”
“Come on, B. For one night. Please.” He put his lip out. “Don’t make me bust out the puppy eyes again.”
“I hate you.” You looked back to Jensen. He did look lonely. Damnit. “Fine.”
“Yes!!” He said waving over Jensen.
Jensen looked at you. You rolled your eyes and motioned him over. He smiled and jumped up.  “So, what are we talking about?”  Jensen walked up to the group.
“Apparently (y/n) has a new man,” Richard said.
Jensen raised his brows. “Oh really?”
“Well, apparently if I have lunch with a guy that means I’m fucking him.”
He smirked. “Good to know.”
“(y/n) do a shot with me.” Briana requested handing you a glass.
“Oh, come on.”
“Can’t handle your liquor anymore?” Jensen teased. You glared at him, clinked her glass with yours, and took the shot. He smiled.
“A table just opened guys. Come on.” Jared yelled, everyone walked over to the empty table. You stood in place and watched them. You really missed this.
Kim nudged you, “You alright babe?”
“Yeah.” You grabbed your beer and headed over to the table.
“Babes!!” Mark yelled.
“Did you really just notice she was here?!” Jared turned to him
“Shut up Moose.” He said as he walked around to hug you.
“How are you, love?” Mark asked as he squeezed you.
“I’m good. How are you?” you said as he released you.
“Good. The babies are getting big.”
“Yeah, I saw the pictures in the group chat. They are adorable.”
“Thank you. When are you gonna have a couple rugrats?”
“Gotta find a good guy first.”  You glanced at Jensen who was glaring at the tv on the wall. I wonder if he heard.
“Yeah not many of us left,” Mark said and you chuckled.
“(y/n) over here,” Jared called out panting the empty chair between him and Jensen. You didn’t want everyone to ask questions, so you had no choice but to go sit down. Fucking fantastic you thought. Ruthie and Rob finally made their entrance and grabbed extra chairs to sit at the end of the table. Ruthie raised her eyebrows and tilted her head toward the bar.
You took the last drink of your beer and stood up. Jared looked at you, “Refill. Dude chill. I’m not gonna make a run for it.”
Jensen huffed. “Well, ya never know.”
You laughed in frustration and leaned down to Jensen’s ear. “I’m trying really hard here.” He smiled. “For Jared and Jared only.” His smile faded, “Unless you want everyone to know the real reason why I left I’d shut up if I were you.”
“Yeah, I’ll take another beer. Thanks, babe.” He said loud enough for everyone to hear.
You rolled your eyes. “Anyone else?”  A couple of people raised their drinks. You walked up to the bar and Ruthie joined you. “I’m gonna punch him.”
She laughed, “I don’t think that’s the best course of action there babe.”
Everyone cheered as Alexandra, Osric, and Matt walked in.
“Where y’all been?” Jared asked walking up behind you.
“Got caught up.” Osric lied.
“That means they were hitting on some babes in the lobby.” You turned to face the 3 boys.
“be right back,” Alex said and walked to the bathroom
Osric’s face lit up. “Oh my god. Babes.” He wrapped his arms around your waist and lifted you off the ground. He spun as he squeezed.
“Damnit, Oz. Put me down!”  he didn’t. You looked up at Jared. “What is the infatuation with picking me up?”
Jared shrugged “It’s fun.”
Osric put you down as the bartender walked over  “What’ll it be boys?”
They ordered their drinks and then the bartender looked at you. “ I got 4.”
“Hit me,” the bartender said.
“Bud Light, corona, vodka cranberry, and a long island.” He nodded and walked to get the beers.
“So what are you doing here?!” Osric asked you.
“Boss sent me.” You hopped on the barstool.
“Oh, who’s he gunnin' for?”
“Who do you think?”
Osric chuckled. “definitely Ackles if he' sends you.”
“It was supposed to be Lily, but something came up and ta-da.” You felt his eyes on you so you glanced over at Jensen. He looked away and took the last drink of his scotch and soda. You turned back around.
“How is Lily?” He asked.
The bartender brought over the beers. “Gimme just a sec on the drinks.”
“Can you add a scotch and soda to mine please?”
“Sure thing”
“She is good. She’s a cast p.a now.”
“aw following in your footsteps.” He said. Alex came out and walked up to get his beer. “Have you met Alex?”
“No, I left mid-season 9. Right after Kevin died actually.”
“Shh spoilers.” Jared teased. You chuckled.
“It’s an honor to meet you.” Alex put his hand out.
“Umm. What? You shook his hand. “I assure you I’m nobody special.”
“The famous Babes. They talked about you so much. Especially Jensen and Jared. They really missed you after you left.” The bartender brought over all the mixed drinks.
He pointed at the boys and gave them their total, then did the same for you. “It's all on me,” Osric said and slid his wallet out.
“You sure bud?” You asked. He nodded. The bartender put the ones for the table on a try for you. “I’ll be right back Ruthie.” You took the tray over to the table and started handing out drinks. “Compliments of Mr. Chau.” They all yelled “Thank you” and he nodded.
Jensen wasn’t in his seat. He was over by the jukebox. You sighed and walked over to him. “Here.” There was a little more force behind the glass than you intended when you put it in his hand.
“Thanks, babe.” He said sarcastically. “I think you missed your calling. You’d be a great waitress.” He said passive-aggressively.
“Yep.” You said with bitchy attitude and turned to walk back to the bar.
“Aren’t you supposed to be nice to me?” He asked in the same tone causing you to stop and turn around.  “Will he fire you if I say no?”
“Take the job. Don’t take the job. I really don’t care anymore. If Eric wants to fire me because some jackass can’t get over his petty bullshit and grow up, then I don’t want to work for him anyway. “
He gently grabbed your arm “I’m the one who can’t get over it?”
You sighed. “Jensen, I don’t wanna do this here.” Your eyes started to water.
“Fine.” He grabbed your hand and led you outside and into the alley beside the hotel. “Then we do it out here.”
“Jensen.”
“What do I have to do to get you to forgive me?”
“Really you were just being a total ass in there. And now you wanna play the victim?”
“Oh, sweetheart I’m not trying playing victim. We all know I’m the bad guy.”
“Yes, you are.” You wiped a tear away.
“I’m sorry.” His voice cracked and he dropped the asshole attitude. “It’s really fucking hard to be around you. It kills me to look at you knowing that you hate me, so I put on a macho tough guy act. And I turn into an asshole.”
“How could you think it would ever be the same?” you wiped another tear. “You wanna talk about something killing you, you were my best friend. The love of my life. The one person I knew would never judge or hurt me. I could come to you about anything. I loved you with everything I had Jensen.” You looked up into his watery eyes. “How could you cheat on me?” you crossed your arms over your aching chest as you said it out loud. “And then you married her? And then the night before your wedding you came to my house. I put my heart out there again and asked you to pick me and look what happened.”
“I had to.” He said through clenched teeth.
“What?”
“She was pregnant. I had to marry her.” You took a deep breath as he raked back his tousled hair with his fingers. “She blackmailed me into the marriage. And then she lost the baby. Then I got blackmailed again.” He wiped the tears off his face. “I was blackmailed and forced to stay in a miserable marriage for Four years. Four years babe and I hated every second of it.”
“I didn’t know.” You whispered.
“I couldn’t tell you. you refused to talk to me.” You opened your mouth, and he held his hands up and you closed it. “Which was understandable. I fucked up, Hell back then you probably wouldn’t of believe me. Again understandable.” He took your tear-soaked face in his hands and started wiping them away. You tightened your arms, raising your elbows to keep the space between you. “The biggest regret I have in my life is that night. I would do anything, and I mean anything to take it back. I hate that I hurt you, I hate that I broke your trust and your heart.”  He took a deep breath. “I hate that I lost you and I’ll never be able to get you back.” You looked from his eyes at the glistening line the teardrop had left on his cheek. “My world ended when I lost you.” You looked back at his deep verdant eyes with tears escaping them. “Then we went on hiatus, I couldn’t find you or get ahold of you. I tried my damnest for 8 weeks. Every day I called everyone I could. I went to your house. Your mama’s house. Everywhere I could think you’d be. Nobody knew where you were and if they did, they wouldn’t tell me. Then I got a call saying I’m gonna be a dad. I've been in hell ever since. Seeing you in your seat today was the first spark of hope I’ve had in a very long time.”
You jumped when you heard the clanking of a trash can lid fall. “I um just um. I’m just g-g-gonna go.”
“Fucking Padalecki.” You said with a chuckle.
Jensen gave you a small smile.” Look (y/n), the last thing I wanna do is get you fired or in trouble, but I don’t know if I am strong enough to be around you every day with us in this state. I’ll call Eric first thing in the morning and tell him you tried, but scheduling conflicts or something. I’ll figure something out. I’ll make sure you’re ok though.” You nodded.  He let go of your face. “I am truly regretful of everything that I did to you and what I put you through. I really hope one day we can be friends again.”
You didn’t know what to say, didn’t know what to do. You heard everything, but it was too much to process. You just stood there looking at the ground. “Babe.” You looked up at him. “I can’t leave you standing in a dark alley at night by yourself. Can I walk you back in?” you nodded. He gestured for you to go first and followed as you started to walk.
Ruthie and Jared were waiting for you guys by the front doors. “Hey there, love,” Ruthie said. She held her arm out. You slid under it and put your around her. Jared opened the door for you and then it shut behind you. “What happened out there ?”
“Cognitive overload.”

Taking on @batmanisagatewaydrug 's 2025 Book Bingo (along with my wife & housemate, so it's now on our fridge. Taking me back to summer reading lists from the library)
I tend to work down my to-read list in order, unless there's something I really want to get to, so most of this list is 'what's the first thing I'll hit that fills the criteria'. But some books earn the right to skip the line, for one reason or another.
Going for a full board, which means actual bingo might take a minute lol
List below-
Literary Fiction - TBD
Short Story Collection - Friday Black by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah. Chain-Gang All Stars was on my top 10 from 2024 so even though short stories and I don't tend to get along, this one I'm excited about. Will also try Drinking From Graveyard Wells by Yvette Lisa Ndlovu
Sequel - Either A Victory of Eagles by Naomi Novik or Heavenly Tyrant by Xiran Jay Zhao. A matter of which one I get first; My library doesn't have physical copies of Heavenly Tyrant yet, and my wife owns all of Temeraire, so it might win.
Childhood Favorite - Might be Watership Down by Richard Adams, which is always a banger, but I reread Watership just a couple years ago, so it might be The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander instead, which I read many times with my mom and still have the whole series of.
20th Century Speculative Fiction - TBD
Fantasy - A Taste of Honey by Kai Ashante Wilson. I read so much fantasy, BUT I already have A Taste Of Honey on my side table. So here we are.
Published Pre-1950 - The Iliad (and The Odyssey) translated by Emily Wilson. Heard a lot of noise about her translation, and haven't read these two since... idk but it's been over a decade. Also going to hop on the Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier train.
Indie Publisher - The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms trilogy by N.K. Jemisin. I read a LOT of indie publishers and Jemisin if one of my all-time favorite writers. I've been putting off this series for a time I can really get into it and burn down all three.
Graphic Novel - Dorohedoro by Q Hyashida. Currently on volume 8, will probably finish the series in the next week or two. Love love love Hyashida's work
Animal on the cover - Plague Dogs by Richard Adams. Despite my aforementioned childhood obsession with Watership Down I never got around to Plague Dogs. Looking forward to it!
Set in a country I've never visited - TBD
Sci-Fi - Another genre I'll read a thousand of in a year. Currently I have Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie on my side table (which I fear may be mid, but time will tell) I'm also VERY excited to read The Spare Man by Mary Robinette Kowal
2025 Debut Author - TBD
Memoir - Love Is An Ex-Country by Randa Jarrar. Memoirs aren't usually my thing, but this one made it's way onto my to-read list last year so this is good motivation.
Zine - TBD. Browsing all the other posts from people doing this challenge for recs
Essay Collection - How To Read Now by Elaine Castillo. Literally the only essay collection on my to-read list and it jump scared me. Thought for sure this would a TBD, but How To Read Now should be interesting.
2024 Award Winner - TBD. Will trawl award lists when I have time
Non-Fiction - Facing the Wave: A Journey in the Wake of the Tsunami by Gretel Ehrlich. Specifically chose something that doesn't also count as social justice/activism, which is most of my non-fiction reads. I've found a real appreciation for good non-fiction the last few years (Everyone go read Swimming to Antarctica by Lynne Cox). Learning stuff is cool!
Social Justice/Activism - Everything you Love Will Burn: Inside the Rebirth of White Nationalism in America by Vegas Tenold. Excited for this one.
Romance - TBD. Tend to read romance that's also another genre (romantasy side eye at myself) so I've inevitably got one on my list. But maybe Akwaeke Emezi will write another romance and sweep me off my feet.
Recipe - Steak wrap pinwheels. My wife has been watching Food Truck Race (lol. lmao even) and one of the contestants made these. Stealing the idea with impunity.
Horror - Fever House by Keith Rosson. I've got a rich vein of horror novels on my to-read list, but this will be one of the first.
Published in the Aughts - TBD I'm old. I read of lot of 00's work.
Historical Fiction - Velvet Was The Night by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Is the 70's historical? I think the 70's is historical now. One of the final 3 books of Moreno-Garcia's I haven't read, and she's never let me down. Might read another Phryne Fisher Mystery or two as well, because they're quick and fun.
Librarian recommendation - TBD. I love my library and there's a few librarians who know me, will have to ask their opinions. Talking to a person! Not just taking one off the recommended shelf! Wild!

Manhattan, February 1774 - Part 1
'Tonight's company' entailed what had to be half of the city's nobility.
If New York had such a thing as aristocrats, this was them. Alexander recognized a handful of familiar faces from Elizabethtown as the Livingston's frequent visitors. He recognized another handful only as familiar names from the balancing sheets of Beekman and Creuger- who were also apparently in attendance.
Both hands full, he occupied himself with listening, observing, nodding along and politely shaking or kissing hands when offered.
Mulligan stayed by his side through countless introductions, gentlemen and ladies in their finest, dresses and embroidery and perfumes and powders. As a student and a tailor they were not these aristocrats' interest for the night, but they made pleasant conversation with them anyway while everyone waited for their meal to be served. All exceedingly polite, imminently important, somewhat familiar, and entirely forgettable.
Miles Cooper was indeed there, along with James Rivington and his wife Elizabeth, but so were Isaac Sears and his wife Sarah Drake, John Lamb and Catherine Jardine, George Clinton and Cornelia, Alexander McDougall and Hanna Botswick, Phillip Schuyler and Catherine van Rensselaer and his business prodigy William Duer, James Duane of the Manhattan Chancery Court with Mary Livingston, his friend James de Lancey, and Lancey’s rival Lewis Morris, Lewis’s brothers Staats, Richard, and Gouverneur who was the first familiar face Alexander had seen and the only person he knew well enough to linger near.
His smile was starting to ache, so he grabbed Mulligan’s wrist for a reprieve.
Mulligan looked at him and then up to Gouverneur who had been attending to Sarah and Sally while their fiancé and husband talked a few paces away. “I’ve been a negligent host to our young friend.” Mulligan confided to the young lawyer. “He’s without a drink,” he said, “Would you-”
“Of course! Come, Alex- we were just congratulating Sally on her recent triumph over the ton.”
Right…Alexander had heard about John Jay’s proposal just a month ago. He had very little direct contact with the Livingstons since he had decided to enroll at Kings- too Anglican for their association- but Kitty kept him involved. Barely eligible for a year and Sally was to be married to one of the brightest lawyers of their generation. He reached to take her hand. “A triumph indeed,” he said, gently brushing his lips to her lace glove.
“It is so good to see you, Alex,” she said, lowering her voice as if it was a confession.
He supposed it was. Calling him anything but ‘Mister Hamilton’ in their present company was closer to scandalous than his attention deserved and she knew it. But, her familiarity did make this stuck-up place feel more-comfortable.
Sally was a darling girl and a tender friend. Though he hadn’t been able to return the compliment, Alexander wasn’t oblivious to the favor she’d paid him while he boarded with her family. Innocent and aimless as it was. He’d felt her gaze at times, watching from the window while he recited latin speeches and poems to himself in the garden. He knew it had little to do with his private performances and far more to do with the vision of him generally- because he felt those same stares when he was simply sitting and reading. But, he would never pity a girl stationed so far above him for her feelings, and when he had disclosed his suspicions, hoping to warn her against them, she assured him that she wanted nothing more than fraternal love from him.
Which he was delighted to give.
Tonight, Sally was a vision in her bright green dress. It made her youth all the more stark, especially in their current company. It was no wonder that Kitty had been glad for Alex to be in New York, here to assist the scheming on her behalf as a brother should.
In the city, where men “could find all sorts of diversions to keep them from marriage until they’re rotting in their boots”, a preeminent bachelor of thirty was not a bad catch at all for a capable hunter like Sally.
Unfortunately, Livingston women were captives of their ton and the rules of courtship, dependent on fathers and brothers for introductions to suitors. Perhaps Alex had lacked the status to make such introductions, but he was a gallant defender. If not the Sword, at least the Shield, capable of subtly repelling the undesirables on her behalf. If the matter had been left up to Gouverneur alone, Kitty worried her sister might end up with a man four times her age.
Jay moved so slowly, there was a time that Alexander had feared she might. The older suitors were the hardest to deter.
Meanwhile, Gouverneur was so sure he’d orchestrated the grand match completely by himself, “All that I’ve seen of him at the practice, he’s kind and dedicated to the right. A true, honest man,” he was saying. “Which are so rare to find these days.”
“True. Women must make their own more often than not,” Sarah Drake Sears agreed. "Honest men that is."
“If only we were allowed to the bar-" Sally said, smiling tauntingly, "better yet, to sit at the bench. It would take a judge to make Gouverneur honest.”
Jay had stepped in closer at his fiancé’s side, near enough to hear her jab. “My ears were itching a moment ago, but now I’m not sure I want to hear why…” he said.
He'd brought Sears along with him to supervise their wives' ribbing. The gracefully-aging sea-captain-made-merchant wasn’t looking at Alexander, and yet still, being so close to the man that practically owned the city’s fealty, Alex's lungs felt tight.
To his credit, Morris had recovered quickly. “I was telling your darling Miss Livingston just how lucky she is to make your match, but now she's got me questioning the very concept of wives."
The glint in Jay's eyes cast a small warning towards Sally not to drive the knife too deep, but Sears was openly amused.
"A tricky one, I agree. Especially with one so quick-tongued and rudely beautiful." It should have been an insult, and from anyone else it might have, but Sally was pressing down a flustered smile against the King's harmless attentions. Sears turned to Morris to say, "Women age like wine. I would advise you to find a match that's been held in reserve a little longer, though there is something to be said for a crisp bite to the pallet."
"I do prefers sweets myself..." Gouverneur said. "But, if the freshest fruit wants to bite my pallet who am I to complain?"
"Incorrigible," Jay's eyes rolled. "I fear for your future wife."
“We all do," Alex heard his own voice tumbling out before he could stop it. "But, he's so far from marrying, I'm sure his future wife hasn’t even been born yet.”
No one laughed.
The joke sunk in slowly and they all just stared.
There was a line somewhere back there and Alexander would very much like to be back on the other side of it.
Gouverneur's lips had parted, uncharacteristically speechless.
Sally's brow had pinched in a mix of confusion and concern. Alex could see the moment his cruel meaning struck her because her face flushed.
Sarah Drake was shaking her head and her husband was struggling to press down a pinched smirk at Gouverneur's expense.
Jay was entirely unamused.
This wasn't Bill Livingston's parlor. If there was one thing that Alexander had learned from his days there, it was that humor was delicate in this echelon of society. Familiarity was fleeting and grace was a thin mask, easily shed. The Livingstons tolerated his rough-hewn edges because his wit could be good fun in private, but in front of their peers...
He didn't say another word. Turned and strode away as fast as his legs would carry him without running.
Mulligan was in his escape path, carefully holding two crystal wine glasses. His eyes widened, and he spun to fall into step beside him until they reached a secluded corner.
Then immediately, "What happened?"
"This is not my scene," Alex said, facing the wall. He pinched his temple, ran his thumb and finger sidelong over his eyes, then squeezed the bridge of his nose as if that might soothe the lingering urge to flee. "I can't play this part and I need to be recast. Immediately. Look- I thought I saw Marinus Willett here," a classmate that he had spotted, talking to the most unfortunately-shaped British officer that Alex had ever seen. "Give him my notes- he can talk to Sears. Make him your pen."
Mulligan's gaze was lost, confused and worried. "Did someone say something?"
"I did! I..." Alex shook his head. He sighed, took a breath, and reached for the wine glass perched in Mulligan's fingers then emptied it in one wide gulp. "I made an ass of myself. Unwittingly cruel to Gouverneur Morris. Deserved or not, it wasn't well done."
"I see..."
"This is not like drawing rooms and dinner talk," he said. "I could explain the Tea Party there. I can dominate the conversation if it pleases a room of friends, but this is something else altogether. These people are...you should have told me what to expect, I don't..." have anything to say.
For a long moment, Mulligan was quiet, just stared at him and then handed him the second glass and took away the first.
The alcohol helped, and it had to be the most flavorful wine Alexander had ever had. He looked at his glass.
The surprise must have shown on his face because, "Lamb's," Mulligan explained. "He provided the wine for tonight. Indisputable taste in vintage. That's why the import business has made him rich."
Alex finished the glass and handed it over.
He should slow down, shouldn't get drunk here, but Mulligan just gave him a sturdy smile. "Y'know, John Lamb's father was a thief- an indentured servant because of it, shipped with his wife to America for burglary just before John was born. Everyone knows it. He'll even talk about it if you ask."
Alex turned back to the parlor to search the crowd for the man in question. Tall, and broad yet he held himself gracefully as anyone else in the room, with round cheeks and a long smiling face. Another titan in human form.
"If this were England, there'd be no accounting for a man out of that background standing in this room, with these men, providing them with his wine. Any gentleman in this room could secure his wines and trade them- could do it easier with far more-ready access to any vintage they'd like to sample. Their tastes have been refined since they were children given their first sips of the grape. But, he's here, and do you know why?"
Alex was far too used to the tailor's roundabout ways of making his point to let himself be this intrigued by the journey.
"Because he can write." Mulligan reached down and fixed some invisible defect in the way Alexander's collar was laying. "His advertisements were poetry. His descriptions alone could make your mouth water more than a draft of the strongest rum. His words made him rich and his wealth made him powerful."
Turning to face the crowd as well, Mulligan put himself beside Alexander and pointed into another group of conversing gentlemen.
"Do you know who that is?"
He shouldn't. Recognizing faces in this room would imply that Alexander had been watching the streets for his social superiors. Gossiping. The whole point of being at King’s was to finish his education quickly and catch up with his peers. But, with a host like Hercules Mulligan, one couldn’t avoid certain stories and when one knew certain stories, one knew to look for certain faces. "Alexander McDougall."
"Mmn, indeed. The Wilkes of America.”
In this house, on the end of John Street, Alexander was standing in the shadow of Golden Hill. Here, just a few years ago, the Sons of Liberty had put up such a stand that certain names were embedded into the city's collective memory, Isaac Sears, John Lamb, Alexander McDougall. They had become symbols of bravery and resistance. More legends than men.
"To the Betrayed Inhabitants' was him," Mulligan said. "So, the force that pamphlet drew out, the energy and power that it stirred, that was his too. It's words, my boy. We all have them, but if you can get yourself the chance to use them wisely, they turn themselves into power."
Alex knew that well enough. Of course he knew- he'd had a taste of it already, just enough to get him into this party, but, "My words are the problem tonight," he said. "When they come from my hands, I can control them...my mouth is another story."
That earned a sympathetic laugh, "No, I suppose that's true. Oratory is quite a different beast from writing, and we both know where your talents lie. The voice is the rudest publisher- no retractions, no edits..."
"I can just write my piece for Cooper and submit a separate one to publish," Alex said.
"You can, and you certainly will, but not without a pseudonym unless you want to lose your course at Kings," Mulligan pointed out. "The point of bringing you here was precisely this. Showing these men the origin of your thoughts so that, when they make it to print- they have no doubts who wrote them."
"I can't speak those thoughts to them if I can't get into a conversation without putting my foot in my mouth."
"Which is why we are going back." Before Alex could protest, Mulligan had a hand on his shoulder, gently steering him back into the crowd towards where Morris and Sears were now talking. "Maybe you can't take back whatever you said, but...you can always amend it. Give it more fabric until it forms a desirable shape..."
Apologize or lie. That was all he was saying, but as they came back to Gouverneur, Sears and his wife, Alexander searched for Sally as they walked- the one person he truly should apologize to. But, she and Jay had moved on to a new circle.
Still. He knew what fabric to sew and how to let it lay, an admission, a concession, sacrifice, apologies and lies. He came to a stop in front of Gouverneur, and as soon as he had his attention, said- "I'm sorry I was rude to you and vulgar." Then he looked at Isaac and Sarah. "You are my host and I was offensive in your home against my own friend. I stepped away from it because I did not know what to say to make that right."
"It's alright, Alex-"
Before Gouverneur could stop him, Alex held up a hand to let him finish.
The young lawyer stepped back and folded his hands.
"It's not alright. I need to confess, the topic of marriage has vexed me since Sally debuted. You are aware of how her family welcomed me when I came from St Croix. Without intrinsic connections, I was their boarder, but more than that, when I had none of my own, they were my family. So, Mister Morris, you must understand, the duty that you were able to fulfill to Sally as a gentleman is one that I envy."
This was not a secret he ever expected to trade, but this performance was working. His small audience was hooked, waiting to be reeled in with the story and feeling. Sarah in particular was studying him with a certain consideration that had him convinced he was transparent to her. Yet still, she was watching.
So, he laid it on thick, "I have no sisters of my own, but I once did."
They were words Alexander hadn't spoken aloud in half a decade. Yet here he was, offering up this piece of himself for the good graces of powerful strangers. It felt worse than groveling.
"She would be a few years younger than Sally now, and I just think...if she were alive, she would be eligible next year. With me as her brother, so distant and untethered in this place, her prospects would be dismal. Girls are held so helpless in this world, and when Kitty asked you to look out for Sally...I resented being helpless too."
Gouverneur obviously didn't know what to say.
So, "I know this doesn't excuse my rudeness. I just thought, if you knew it was envy, you might more easily forgive-"
"Water under the bridge." Gouverneur pulled Alex under his arm and squeezed him by the shoulders tightly, dragging him into the fold.
Alex got a final glimpse of Mulligan's smirk as he slipped off to talk to Willett and the vulture-like officer he was engrossed with.
The conversation became a whirlwind from there.
Gouveneur and Issac were already speaking of politics. They were unrestrained in his company. With the rest of their guests at a safe distance to speak candidly, it took nearly no effort for Alex to learn why it had been so important to recruit a reporter who had seen the state of Boston Harbor.
The Sons of Liberty had been awaiting a similar shipment of tea from the East India Trading Company in New York Harbor for months. Their shipment had, unfortunately, been delayed in arrival, allowing the Bostonian Sons to act first and take center stage, but Sears and McDougall were feverishly planning their own performance.
With time to prepare their case before taking action, they were looking, not just for writers, but for agents on the ground, capable of spreading information through other means besides print and collecting information from corners of the city which would become increasingly inaccessible to them- Anglican corners.
Arguments would have counterarguments, and counterarguments needed prepared defenses.
The servants had finished setting the tables for dinner, and their hosts excused themselves to oversee their meal's arrangement before the procession into the dining room.
It was a show of grandeur, the lords and ladies marching in to their places at the feast. Music and talking and tasting exotic dishes. Knowing how much control the people at this table held over the rabble outside the doors, how much of their scheming was done in quiet conversations and casual dealings, Alexander tried to hear as much as possible while seeming as unassuming as he could. With Mulligan at his side, bragging about fitting the governor for a new suit, asking about a visiting theater troupe's upcoming playbill, joking about the latest cases at the chancellory court, it was easy to fit in.
As a student in one of the most Anglican universities in America, Alexander was understanding the role Mulligan saw for him, but his time in Sears' eyes had been so short, he felt keenly insecure about it.
Throughout the meal, he smiled and strained, not knowing for sure if his place here was an ephemeral illusion. If he would return to his small room above Mulligan's foyer, shed these fancy clothes, return to his books, and be forgotten to everyone he'd met tonight.
He knew he couldn't impress them when the dancing began. But, there was one sure way to know if he had made an impression on Sears...
After the last course was served, parties began rising from their tables and milling about, resuming previous conversations and drawing one another away from the dinning room to go visit the great hall where strings were beginning to play.
As her guests departed, the lady of the house lingered behind to continue directing the servants. Sarah Drake was a thin brunette with a round face and laughter lines framing her eyes.
Alex lingered long enough for her to notice him before he approached. He'd kissed her hand when he was first introduced, but he did it again now. “I was told I shouldn’t call your husband King tonight, but am I allowed to call you Queen?”
She laughed, a delicate, melodic sound, and leaned in to confide, “I'm sure you know there's little love for monarchs here, but if this were a game of chess, I rightfully would be one.”
Alex smiled because she was indulging him and it was delightful. “I agree. I assumed he had you making his most important moves. The wives so often are."
She gave a small laugh, dodging his eyes, but it was confirmed, if not outright. “There are advantages to your sex’s tendency to underestimate mine," she said. "The Queen can always travel further in directions where the King is limited."
"Quite true, and her placement commands the other pieces just as much as his," Alex agreed. Perhaps her husband would not tell him what role he could play, but, "She determines the strength of their defenses, and the best angles for attack. Since she moves in every way, and guards just by her proximity, when you have her protection, you're free to move at will. There is something to be said for a woman's leadership in war."
That finally earned her gaze, locked onto his. "That's a word that will set people on edge if you're not careful."
"I don't think I need to be careful with you...I feel quite protected."
She held his eyes steadily for another moment before breaking away to direct a slave that was carrying a bowl of pastries towards the kitchen to take it out to the great hall instead.
Alexander waited, clasped his hands behind his back.
She returned to him, leaning lower and dropping her voice. "There's an excellent little bakery on Cherry Street. I recommend you purchase their brioche tressée on Wednesday. If you find yourself with inquiries about it... Miss Lottie knows the recipe."
Alex nodded firmly, sealing the deal more resolutely than any handshake between businessmen.

John Weatherspoon (January 27, 1942 – October 29, 2019), better known as John Witherspoon, was an American actor and comedian who performed in various television shows and films.
Witherspoon was born in Detroit, Michigan. He later changed his last name from Weatherspoon to Witherspoon. Witherspoon was one of 11 siblings. His older brother, William, became a songwriter for Motown, with whom he penned the lyrics of the 1966 hit single "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted". Another sibling, Cato, was a director of the PBS-TV Network/CH56 in Detroit. His sister, the late Dr. Gertrude Stacks, was a pastor at Shalom Fellowship International, a church in Detroit.
Witherspoon worked occasionally as a model. During the 1960s and 1970s, he began to take a liking towards comedy. During that time, he began his stand-up comedy career. As a result, he had many friends in the business, including Tim Reid (while he was working on WKRP in Cincinnati and The Richard Pryor Show), Robin Williams (also on The Richard Pryor Show), Jay Leno, and David Letterman.
Witherspoon married Angela Robinson in 1988. They have two sons, John David ("J.D.") and Alexander. David Letterman was Witherspoon's best friend and is the godfather to his two sons.
He is best remembered for his role as Willie Jones for the Friday series; Witherspoon also starred in films such as Hollywood Shuffle (1987), Boomerang (1992), The Five Heartbeats (1991), and Vampire in Brooklyn (1995).
In 1977, he became a regular on the series The Richard Pryor Show, an NBC American comedy series. This then led to his appearance in WKRP In Cincinnati in 1982 in the fourth-season episode "Circumstantial Evidence" in which Witherspoon played Detective Davies.
He has also made appearances on television shows such as 227 (1987), Amen (1988), LA Law (1990), The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1994), The Wayans Bros. (1995–99), The Tracy Morgan Show (2003), Barnaby Jones (1973), The Boondocks (2005–2014), and Black Jesus (2014–2019). Subsequent appearances were on Good Times, What's Happening!!, and The Incredible Hulk.
He wrote a film, From the Old School, in which he played an elderly working man who tries to prevent a neighborhood convenience store from being developed into a strip club.
In 2011, he starred in a Final Destination spoof with Shane Dawson on YouTube. In May 2013, he featured on "Saturday (skit)", from rapper Logic on his 2013 mixtape titled Young Sinatra: Welcome to Forever.

I do suppose you all could ask me about my proxies or other wards if you would like to. I have too many wards to list all of them so you will simply need to ask about one to find out if they work for me or if I know of them, but my proxies are as follows;
Brian Thomas
Timothy Wright
Alexander Kralie
Jay Merrick
Richard Doggers
Tobias Rogers
They are my most skilled and loyal soldiers.

On the King estate was a wild ravine where a stream known by the name “Awiehawken” dashed over a part of the famous duel ground, “which has been called the most interesting spot in the county of Hudson.” There handsome young Philip Hamilton in the dawn of his manhood fell by the hand of George Eacker three years before his father met a like fate from Aaron Burr. His second on that occasion was his cousin Philip Church, who had recently returned from England with his father, where he had been studying at Eton. These two grand-sons of General Philip Schuyler are said to have been strikingly alike in personal appearance, and their remarkable attachment, which led them to be seen constantly together, is one of the pleasantest memories in the annals of the society of the period.
Source — Mills, Weymer Jay. Historic Houses of New Jersey. United Kingdom, J. B. Lippincott, 1902.
I find this description interesting because it's one of the very few descriptions we get of Philip's appearance, aside the general elucidation of “handsome”, and Hamilton who once described him as having common, basic, infant attributes—Additionally, he was only eight months old, and any of these said features he very well could and likely did grow out of;
It is agreed on all hands, that he is handsome, his features are good, his eye is not only sprightly and expressive but it is full of benignity. His attitude in sitting is by connoisseurs esteemed graceful and he has a method of waving his hand that announces the future orator. He stands however rather awkwardly and his legs have not all the delicate slimness of his fathers.
Source — From Alexander Hamilton to Richard Kidder Meade, [27 August 1782], Founders Online, National Archives. [Original source: The Papers of Alexander Hamilton, vol. 3, 1782–1786, ed. Harold C. Syrett. New York: Columbia University Press, 1962, pp. 150–151.]
Also particularly because this edition was published in 1902, before Allan McLane made the grave mistake of titling William's painting as Philip's in 1910. [x] Which would then spur others to make the same mistake like Ron Chernow, and even Phillip Thomas Tucker, who wrote; “A healthy and handsome dark-haired son Philip Hamilton was destined to be born on January 22, 1781.” [x] The presumption of dark hair likely originating due to William's shaded portrait.
But at the same time, Weymer Jay Mill was born in 1880 in Jersey City, and died in 1939. So, he was hardly talking from firsthand experience considering this would have been a whole 79 years after Philip's death, and P. Church who died in 1861. He also doesn't bring up any source material to this particular claim, so it can only be defined as hearsay. Although his claim isn't entirely far-fetched as a whole, P. Church visited his Hamilton relatives often and did seem to be close with his similar namesake cousin. He was definitely close to his Uncle Hamilton, He also served as an Aide-de-camp to for him between 1798-1800, while he was Major General and Inspector General of the Army during the Quasi-war. And both he and his cousin Philip were part of a literature society. It was a Literature Society composed mainly of boys in their early twenties. It looks as though the members belonged to the same generational group, and were all rather acquainted with each other. A reappearing pattern being that; most of them were from New York, studied law, and graduated from Columbia in the 1790s.
About this time, Mr. Jones was a member of a literary society, (of which the late Peter A. Jay was president,) composed, among others, of Nathan Sandford, Charles Baldwin, John Ferguson, Jas. Alexander, Rudolph Bunner, Goveurneur Ogden, the first Philip Hamilton, William Bard, Wm. A. Duer, Philip Church, John Duer, and Beverley Robinson; of whom the last five are the only survivors.
Source — Jones, William Alfred. Memorial of the Late Honorable David S. Jones: With an Appendix, Containing Notices of the Jones Family, of Queen's County. United States, Stanford and Swords, 1849.
But I still have yet to see any claims that could be more solid about Philip looking similar to P. Church. Either way, it is interesting and could be plausible. Although judging by the common depictions of P. Church, I wouldn't consider that a compliment!
