Spoiler post
.
I kinda wish they ended it with a quick scene or after credits showing a time skip. Holland's Peter exits the Daily Bugle. He bumps into Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock. He rushes back to his apartment where he is roommates with Dane DeHaan's Harry Osborn. Willem Dafoe's Norman was visiting, offering Peter a ride to campus (but Peter refused). He rushes to the Empire State University campus, passing Jamie Foxx's Max Dillon and Thomas Church's Flint Marko, who were handling maintenance. Peter barely makes it to the first day of class, taught by Rhys Ifran's Dr. Curt Connors. Dr. Otto Octavius was a guest in the class, challenging the freshmen to compete for a job as his lab assistant. He gives Peter eye contact while telling the class that "intelligence is a gift to use for the good of mankind". Sitting next to Peter were Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy and Shameik Moore's Miles Morales.
Like J. Jonah Jameson, these characters are variants that came from the MCU.

If any movie can actually get people back into theaters during the pandemic, it's Spider-Man: No Way Home. Tom Holland's sixth outing as Spider-Man is as big and bold as any Marvel team-up film. It's hard to say it's the best live-action Spider-Man film movie, but it's certainly the most Spider-Man movie. It's a tribute to almost twenty years of live-action Spider-Man movies so far.
The tragedy of Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield's runs as Spider-Man has always been that they stood in the shadow of Sam Raimi's films with Tobey Maguire, from 2002-2007. While it was apparent by the end that Raimi was having irreconcilable creative differences with Sony management, Raimi's films have stood the test of time, and every Spidey outing since has had to fix what wasn't broken. They either bore audiences by showing them something they've already seen, or try to do something different and miss out on a lot of the character's backstory that fans care about.
It's little surprise, then, that Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man made little impact in his two films, which were micromanaged to be what Sony executives wanted, rather than what audiences wanted. There were complaints that we were already seeing Uncle Ben die again.
Meanwhile Tom Holland's Spider-Man never had a chance to do what Tobey Maguire's did. He was introduced halfway through a third Captain America movie as a protege for Iron Man. We didn't see Uncle Ben die. Instead this Peter Parker became an Avenger, while attending a science and technology high school for gifted students.
In some ways, this Peter Parker has led a privileged life, with access to Tony Stark's technology and gadgets. It's a tribute to the good work done by director Jon Watts and actor Tom Holland that this still feels like Spider-Man, even with the radically different backstory that comes with befriending Tony Stark.
Watts also took pains to set up the world of this friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, including an entire rogue's gallery of very small-time, street-level crooks. That included Michael Keaton's Vulture, and takes on The Shocker, The Prowler and The Scorpion, none of whom return here. (Before the film I did see a trailer for Jared Leto as Morbius, where Michael Keaton's Vulture does cameo.)
No Way Home has much bigger plans in mind here. The point of establishing this Spider-Man's world was to tether him to his everyday life in New York, which makes him feel more like Spider-Man.
Instead, this movie explodes its world outward, bringing back characters from almost twenty years of Spider-Man films, and exploring in the process what exactly it means to be Spider-Man. The movie leaves us with the hope that the next Holland Spider-Man film might be smaller rather than bigger, but who knows. We do at least feel assured that Holland has truly become the Spider-Man of the comics, even if these movies took a roundabout way of getting there.
It's nice to see all these characters one more time. Even Rhys Ifan's Lizard and Thomas Haden Church's Sandman turn up, although almost entirely in CGI form, which means they don't really feel like part of the ensemble (and are buried pretty deep in the credits list).
Alfred Molina is predictably good as Otto Octavius AKA Dr. Octopus, but Willem Dafoe's Norman Osborn, aka the Green Goblin, steals the show. He reminds you why he was the original Spider-Man movie villain, and the greatest of the bunch.
Jamie Foxx, as Max Dillon / Electro, seems to have taken this reprised role as a do-over. The weird, nerdy character he played in 2014 has a new attitude, and looks and acts a lot more like, well, Jamie Foxx. He's cooler, suave and funny, but unpleasant as well - every line feels somehow like a threat. It's not quite a masterclass but Foxx succeeds as establishing himself as one of Spider-Man's most memorable villains.
One line about a black Spider-Man addresses the elephant in the room - Miles Morales, a character whose animated film "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" already did the whole multiverse thing to great acclaim. Stan Lee realized over time that part of Spider-Man's appeal was that anyone could wear that mask. A popular Japanese Spider-Man TV series helped establish the super sentai genre, and was a big influence on what became the Power Rangers series.
"No Way Home" does what "Into the Spider-Verse" couldn't- It brings back characters from the previous films, as if tying up loose ends. It's an audacious and overly complicated idea which really shouldn't work, but in practice it leaves the film in very assured hands. If we didn't already know these characters some of these scenes would probably fall flat, but we do know these characters, and these are a bunch of very good actors taking a well-earned victory lap.
J.K Simmons returns as J. Jonah Jameson. He's a constant threat in the background here but also underused, and not as memorable or funny as he was in the Raimi films, since he never interacts properly with Parker. Maybe next time.
Raimi's Spider-Man 3 was widely criticized for having too many villains (Sony had requested that Venom be involved), and for trying to do too much, as if multiple movies were going on at once. This Spider-Man 3 goes several times farther, but I think we're at the point where audiences want more.
At this point, the Avengers movies are breaking new ground in how many of these movies and TV series you're expected to have seen. This movie is a victory lap for Sony's live-action Spider-Man movies, which are also tied into the Avengers series. Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a major part of the story this time, and let's not forget that Sony has also been doing movies with Spider-Man villains Venom, Carnage and the upcoming Morbius.
There's a trailer, played after the film, for Sam Raimi's Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness, which fully expects you to have watched the Marvel TV series WandaVision and What If ...?
In the latter animated series, Tom Holland didn't actually return as Spider-Man, so I'm not sure if he's even watched it. But what you'll see here ties back to that series.
That's a lot to ask from viewers, but the continuity is part of the fun at this point, and always has been with the Avengers series of films and shows. The more characters and continuity they add, the larger the world feels, for better or worse, and the bigger these movies get.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is a big one. It delivers a lot for Spider-Man fans, and doesn't disappoint. If anything can get people back into theaters during a pandemic, it'll be that.
As I left the theater, one mother was saying she liked the film while her son was wailing that he hated it, because of what happened to Peter Parker and his friends.
Get used to it, kid. If there's one thing we know, it's that life is never easy for Spider-Man. But he tries to do the right thing anyway.

Comedy club
Something which doesn’t really get talked about in terms of Old Boys Clubs in industries is comedy.
People know about politicians all coming from public schools and Oxbridge. The UK has had fifty-five Prime Ministers, of which 28 went to Oxford and 14 to Cambridge. Twenty of them went to school at Eton. It’s not even a historic thing, given that two of the past three went from Eton to Oxford to government.
That’s seen as a sign that they are out of touch, an inner circle of privileged schoolmates who look down on the rest of us. People imagine similar scenarios in investment banking or law, where the top jobs are occupied by people who went to the right schools and universities and all know each other, so are able to give each other a leg up and keep social mobility under control.
But when it comes to mainstream comedians, they are the public figures we look to as relatable everypeople, the very ones who mock the out of touch elites and satirise their nepotism. A few are obviously posh, but that is played with a major part of their persona, like Miles Jupp or Ivo Graham self-deprecating and welcoming jibes about their privileged backgrounds, because comedy is for the people first of all.
But television comedy seems to have as high a quota of Cambridge graduates as there are Oxford graduates in the Government. A list of the past members of the Cambridge Footlights, the university dramatics club, pretty much makes up a timeline of British comedy.
As well as mixing with the likes of Prince Charles and Salman Rushdie, Footlights members formed Monty Python (with members of the Oxford Revue) and the Goodies, and created classic satirical programmes Spitting Image and Yes Minister.
They formed double acts like Alexander Armstrong and Ben Miller (and more lately daytime TV’s Armstrong and Richard Osman), Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, David Mitchell and Robert Webb, Hugh Dennis and Steve Punt, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore and more. Griff Rhys Jones formed a partnership with Oxford’s Mel Smith.
But those who forge a path alone have also done pretty well for themselves. Alongside a bevy of famous actors, the Footlights have nurtured Douglas Adams, Clive Anderson, Sandi Toksvig, David Baddiel, Andy Parsons, Tim Key, Richard Ayoade, John Oliver, Alex Horne, Mark Watson, Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, Phil Wang and others alongside their first-class education.
(Their counterparts at the university’s great rivals, the Oxford Revue, had the rest of the Pythons, Stewart Lee and Richard Herring, Angus Deayton, Armando Ianucci, Rebecca Front, Richard Curtis, Rowan Atkinson, Sally Phillips, Al Murray and more who haven’t done too badly for themselves either.)
But even the solo artists are rarely left on their own. The industry is saturated with Oxbridge graduates who were part of the same societies, often at overlapping times, and sitcoms and panel shows are filled with familiar faces. Even on the stand-up circuit, comedians usually make their way by supporting a more famous act on tour to build up their own name, and it seems it would be easier to do that if one of the famous names used to do student sketches with you.
Of course, that’s only considering on-screen talent. The Footlights and Revue needed people to write and produce their shows, and so they also nurtured talents across the board. Smith and Jones formed the production company Talkback, which went on to produce hit comedy programmes (many created by Ianucci) including Brass Eye, I’m Alan Partridge, Green Wing and Da Ali G Show, as well as successful panel shows like QI and Never Mind the Buzzcocks.
Ianucci also created other shows like The Thick Of It with fellow Oxford graduate Jon Plowman (and starring Front) and worked with Lee and Herring to write On the Hour for radio (the beginnings of a format and characters he would expand later on). Plowman was himself given his step up in the industry thanks to his Oxford friendship with Mel Smith, who he worked with in theatre for a time before becoming Head of Comedy in the BBC and responsible for commissioning new comedy shows, including French & Saunders and the Office.
Peter Fincham, another Footlights alumnus who was hired as Talkback’s creative director, went on to be the controller of BBC One and then the Director of Television for ITV. John Lloyd, another Footlights alumnus, created popular panel show QI. For the job of hosting it, he chose Footlights alumnus Stephen Fry. When Fry stepped down, he was replaced by Footlights alumnus Sandi Toksvig.
Lloyd was himself originally going to be given the job of hosting Have I Got News for You, which ultimately went to the Oxford Revue’s Angus Deayton, with Oxford graduate Ian Hislop as permanent team captain. Have I Got News for You was created by Hat Trick Productions, another production company which was also responsible for bringing Whose Line is it Anyway, Room 101, Outnumbered, and the Armstrong & Miller Show to our screens.
Armstrong & Miller were a Footlights double act. Room 101 was given to Nick Hancock, a Footlights president, to host. The first fifteen guests invited on included Peter Cook, another ex-president, Deayton, Hislop, Tony Slattery, Baddiel, and Germaine Greer, all of whom were in the Footlights or Revue, many at the same time. Outnumbered was a Hugh Dennis sitcom vehicle. The first series of Whose Line featured Slattery, Cook, Fry, Jan Ravens, Graeme Garden, Rhys-Jones and Rory McGrath, all from the Footlights (Sandi Toksvig was then added as a regular). Clive Anderson, another Footlights president, was given that job to host.
(Boris Johnson also notably featured on Room 101 and Have I Got News For You, providing a nice overlap with the Prime Minister trend above.)
Hat Trick Productions, the company behind all of these shows, was founded by Rory McGrath and Jimmy Mulville, another ex-president, who met, performed and wrote together in the Cambridge Footlights. Another of the large production companies, Endemol Shine UK, created panel/game shows 8 out of 10 Cats and Richard Osman’s House of Games. Osman graduated from Cambridge and the Footlights into a producer role at Hat Trick, before being appointed Endemol’s creative director, where he created Pointless, setting up his own career in front of the camera as well as hiring Footlights contemporary Armstrong as his co-host, as well as his two shows of his own. (8 out of 10 Cats host Jimmy Carr also went to Cambridge, although he came to comedy later on in life).
It’s Footlights/Revue all the way up. The panel shows provide an opportunity to invite a whole range of comedians on as guests and give a friend the leg-up they needed, and it’s no surprise that half of the guests end up being Footlights graduates, given that the host is, and the creator of the show is, and the people running the production company are, and the commissioning director of the television channel are. You simply get your peers to approve your show and then you get your peers to make it and you get your peers to host it and invite your peers to appear on it. After all, that was how you made your shows at university.
It works the same way for sitcoms, just with a slightly more permanent cast. But Footlights people are everywhere on stage and screen. The director of the National Theatre? Check. The producers of Comic Relief? Check. The list goes on and on, and many of the individuals barely mentioned above went on to create or chair their own shows (e.g. Alex Horne’s Taskmaster).
So the question is - how many people have been given a gig because of their connections? How many of these people wouldn’t have been chosen if they hadn’t previously worked with the other party in their student days, or were at least a friend of a friend of a friend? It seems inconceivable that there was no in-group bias, that these people all just happened to be the objective best choice in an open hiring or commissioning process. But it’s something that I think most viewers aren’t even aware of.

gonna need you to elaborate on those 'famous people you've met' tags, queen. like what. what is your life.
god sorry this has probably been here all day but i’ve been belting out chicago songs all morning (the musical not the band) @scimmymunkeh can verify that my life, especially from like 2009-2014 (before i moved to scotland) was like. so weird.
in my misspent youth i travelled around the UK and europe seeing The Horrors just like. so many times. they were cheap enough to follow around on tour and i like travelling so that’s what i did. and i’m sufficiently not weird (lmao, i know right) as a person that i got to know them decently well (mostly rhys, tbf) so a some of it happened from that. side note - this actually gained me an honest to god real life stalker from tumblr who also lived in london and would like... see me out at the weekend and then send me anons about what i was doing? very weird time. anyway.
alex turner & miles kane - would go to cave club (a night ran primarily by rhys monthly) sometimes and because i am, again, not A Weirdo i’d be chilling with them. mostly miles, bc alex is pretty shy actually. but for some reason i truly do not know like don’t ask i have no idea every time miles and i got drunk we’d make plans to... buy... a pig? and raise it together? i think we were going to call it penny or peggy or something idk. quite what our plans were for co-parenting a FUCKING PIG in LONDON when we didn’t even live together were but. we really wanted to get a pig for some reason. technically i’ve also met alexa chung (this was WAY BACK when she was still dating alex) but she was deeply sus of any woman in his vicinity so just. left that one alone.
peaches geldof - was dating/later married a guy called thomas who was in a band called S.C.U.M. that rhys’ little brother was in. due to them being around all the time (also they were good listen to them) thomas and i knew each other. we weren’t friends or anything - mostly i was pals with sammy seven - but knew each other to talk to each other. something peaches apparently had a massive problem with because every time she saw me she’d shoot daggers at me across the room like oh my GOD i cannot express enough that i’m not interested in tom. chill. anyway she’s dead now.
i forgot about bobby gilespie (primal scream) and lou hayter (new young pony club) who also used to hang out at the cave.
adam ant - the first time i met him was at a 60s night. like literally an event called ‘le beat bespoke’. he was just... there? for some reason? i dunno. had a drink and a smoke with him. nice man. LITERALLY 2 weeks later on my actual 20th birthday i was at a night called ‘stay beautiful’ which was a heavily-manics-inspired regular event ran by music journalist simon price... adam ant turned up and did a ranom guerilla performance. which??? anyway he recognised me and we hung out for a bit again. he was VERY manic and off his meds at the time (adam ant is bipolar). invited me back to his hotel, nudge nudge wink, but uh. did not do that. as funny as “i boned adam ant once” would be as a story in my life............... no. dude’s old enough to be my dad. haven’t seen him since, just weird that it happened twice so close together in a city of 9 million people.
damon albarn - there was a very bizarre period of maybe 3-4 months where every time i went out i bumped into damon. like literally. every event i attended he was there. again, city of 9 million people, and we lived on opposite sides of it. permanently drunk, and asked me for a lighter every single time he saw me even though (at the time) i wasn’t smoking. at one point i bumped into him at waterloo train station like “okay that’s it i have to leave the city. i can never go outside again. this is getting fucking weird”. haven’t seen him since, either. on a related note i’ve met paul simeon as well.
richard oakes (suede) - saw suede a bunch of times and as one of the few people who love and appreciate richard oakes i always spoke to him and he was really excited about it and would remember the smallest details. had a backstage pass to a show in paris once. richard also has a side project called artmagic that i’ve seen and no matter how many years pass, he still recognises me and will run over like an excited puppy. met his parents twice, who are lovely people.
simon gilbert (suede) - similar but less dramatic, but will add fans on personal facebook if he’s seen you often enough bc he’s a lovely guy.
obviously i’ve also hung out with the rest of suede but didn’t interact with them as much. it’s mostly me x richard brotp 4eva.
sean patrick flanery (actor, boondock saints/mongolian death worm) - i made a joke about his hair being stuck in the 90s on twitter once and he’s followed me ever since which is at this point LITERALLY YEARS i really don’t understand.
#i'm not counting all the people i've met in a purely fan-creator setting#because that's a lot of people#however nicky wire knows me by name#'nicky wire is my dad' is a long-running joke#met all of pulp as well like#and i've met hozier#oh i've gotten WASTED with david keenan but he isn't that famous (yet)#he should be though go listen to david keenan#OH I FORGOT i've been at the same party as aidan gillen in dublin

The Haunting of Bly Manor Cast: Where You’ve Seen the Actors Before
https://ift.tt/3loTz7C
There’s a simple answer to where you’ve seen most of 2020’s The Haunting of Bly Manor‘s cast before: in 2018’s The Haunting of Hill House. Writer-director Mike Flanagan has a resident company of actors with roles across several of his horror projects, as shown by the significant crossover between these two Netflix series alone. Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Henry Thomas and Katie Parker are just some of the familiar faces appearing in Flanagan’s new Henry James-inspired spooky series Bly Manor. And here’s what else this bunch is known for on screen.
Henry Thomas – Henry Wingrave
Thomas’ most famous role came at the age of 10 when he played young lead Elliott in Steven Spielberg’s 1982 blockbuster E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (see his terrific audition tape here). In recent years, Thomas has been a frequent collaborator with writer-director Mike Flanagan, playing the young Hugh Crain, father to the five Crain children and husband of Olivia Crain in Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House. He also appeared in three of Flanagan’s feature films, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, as well has having recurring roles in FX comedy Better Things and Stargirl.
Amelie Bea Smith – Flora Wingrave
Nine-year-old Amelie Bea Smith already has three significant roles under her belt. As well as her terrific performance as Flora Wingrave in Bly Manor, she’s also the current actor to voice cartoon character Peppa Pig (a huge deal in the UK), having taken over the role from her predecessor earlier this year. Before Smith took on that mantle, she had a recurring role in long-running BBC One soap EastEnders, playing Arshad and Mariam’s foster child Daisy.
Benjamin Evan Ainsworth – Miles Wingrave
Ainsworth, the little genius behind Miles Wingrave will soon be seen alongside Alyson Hannigan, Ben Schwarz, Danny Pudi and more in Disney+ feature film Flora and Ulysses, the story of a girl and a squirrel with magic powers. Previous to Bly Manor, he also appeared in short film The Recycling Man and a 2018 episode of British soap Emmerdale.
Victoria Pedretti – Dani Clayton
Pedretti made a real impression as the adult Nell Crain in Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House. Nellie was a sufferer of sleep paralysis and haunted throughout by ‘The Bent-Neck Lady’, if you remember. She and her twin brother Luke were the youngest of the five Crain siblings. Pedretti also played hippy Lulu, a member of the Charles Manson Family in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, and played major character Love Quinn in the second season of Netflix’s stalker-thriller You. She can soon be seen as Katherine in the Elisabeth Moss-starring Shirley Jackson biopic Shirley.
T’Nia Miller – Hannah Grose
Miller’s had roles in several Russell T. Davies projects, starting with Cucumber and Banana, and last year leading to the major part of Celeste in Davies’ BBC One future-set family drama Years and Years. She’s recently appeared in Netflix’s Sex Education as head of the school board Maxine Tarrington, and has popped up in a great many British TV shows including Marcella, Born to Kill, Hatton Garden and 2015 episode of Doctor Who ‘Hell Bent’.
Rahul Kohli – Owen
Kohli is best recognised around these parts as Medical Examiner Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti in The CW’s iZombie. A major character in the comic book-inspired horror-fantasy, Kohli appeared across the series’ five seasons, which kept him busy from 2015-2019. He’s also appeared in a couple of episodes of Supergirl as Lena Luthor’s ex, Jack Spheer. Along with Kate Siegel, Henry Thomas and Alex Essoe, he’ll next appear in Mike Flanagan’s forthcoming haunted island series Midnight Mass.

The Haunting of Bly Manor Review (Spoiler-Free)
By Nick Harley
TV
New on Netflix: October 2020 Releases
By Alec Bojalad
Oliver Jackson-Cohen – Peter Quint
Unforgettable as Luke Crain in The Haunting of Hill House, British actor Oliver Jackson-Cohen’s biggest recent film role was as the titular lead aka Adrian Griffin in Leigh Whannell’s 2020 remake The Invisible Man, opposite Elisabeth Moss. He’s already had a full career on British TV, with early roles in cosy period dramas Lark Rise to Candleford and Mr Selfridge, as well as playing Prince William in 2011 TV series William and Kate: Happily Ever After. In the US, Jackson-Cohen played Jonathan Harker to Jonathan Rhys-Meyers’ Dracula in the NBC series of the same name. He also popped up as Lucas in Emerald City and will soon be seen in the Maggie Gyllenhaal-directed The Lost Daughter.
Tahirah Sharif – Rebecca Jessell
If you’ve seen Netflix’s A Christmas Prince and its unstoppable raft of sequels, you’ll recognise Sharif as Melissa, a friend to and former co-worker of lead Amber. Before that, she played the regular role of Carrie Norton in BBC One school drama Waterloo Road and Ella, Ash’s daughter on long-running British medical drama Casualty.
Matthew Holness – Dominic Wingrave
Comedian-writer-actor Matthew Holness has appeared in Friday Night Dinner, Toast of London, Year of the Rabbit, Back, Life’s Too Short and Free Agents, but he’ll only ever be associated with one role for this site’s readers: dreamweaver Garth Marenghi of Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace fame.
Alex Essoe – Charlotte Wingrave
Before she took on the role of Wendy Torrance in Mike Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep (the same character memorably played by Shelley Duvall in Kubrick’s The Shining) Alex Essoe had a string of low-budget horror flicks to her name. She’s now part of the Flanagan rep company, and will be following up her Bly Manor role with a recurring part on the writer-director’s forthcoming TV series Midnight Mass.
Amelia Eve – Jamie
The role of Bly Manor gardener Jamie is, it’s fair to say, Amelia Eve’s biggest screen part to date, but surely that won’t be the case for long. She’s also completed filming roles in soon-to-be-released feature films Big Boys Don’t Cry, Shadowland, Dorcha and Thea.
Kate Siegel – Viola
Horror star Siegel is a key part of the Mike Flanagan company on screen and in real life (they got married in 2016 after working together on a host of horror properties from Ouija: Origin of Evil to Oculus and Hush). She played glove-wearing child psychologist Theo, one of the adult Crain siblings in Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, and will also soon appear in Flanagan series Midnight Mass. In Bly Manor, Siegel plays 17th-century noblewoman Viola, whose story forms the basis of a full-episode flashback.
Katie Parker – Perdita
Remember the 1920s flapper ghost in The Haunting of Hill House? That was Katie Parker, who’s back in Bly Manor playing 17th century noblewoman Perdita, sister to Viola (see above).
Carla Gugino – Narrator
Gugino played Olivia Crain, mother to the five Crain children in The Haunting of Hill House, and for obvious reasons she is (at the time of writing) uncredited for her role as the narrator of Bly Manor. Gugino’s screen career is as long as your arm (if your arm were very, very long) and goes all the way from recurring roles in 80s soap Falcon Crest to 90s comedy Spin City and medical drama Chicago Hope, 2000s comedies Entourage and Californication, all the way through the Spy Kids franchise, to more recent projects The Brink, Jett and Manhunt.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
The Haunting of Bly Manor is streaming now on Netflix.

First Impressions
It had been a long two weeks. Moving all of your belongings 6700 miles around the world while trying to set up the lease on a shopfront, find a flat, and settle into both was a herculean effort, and Ryo thought that now that he was here, he wasn’t going anywhere for quite some time. Most of his efforts had been focused on the shop, with his spartan flat suffering because of it. He’d made a number of pieces throughout his time at Mahoutokoro, and especially as part of his final year thesis, but there was still the nagging thought in the back of his head that it wasn’t enough to open a shop on, even if most of his business, he was sure, was going to be bespoke creations. It was leaving the still-shuttered but about to open shop one evening that he decided to finally poke his head into the herbalist’s shop that he had leased an apartment above. It always seemed to be a hive of activity and simply from walking past the window he had no idea who actually ran the shop. But if he was to be living above them it was only polite that he made an introduction.
Winter had truly begun to settle in in Diagon, but crossing the threshold from blustery London to the inside of the shop made it easy to forget. It was so warm Ryo was forced to pull his wand from his back pocket, a muttered incantation clearing the fog from his glasses as he held the door open for an exiting customer. Inside was even more chaotic than it had first appeared through the window, but with an inherent rhythm and order that Ryo could appreciate. The bustle was frenetic, but everything was neat and in its place and everyone seemed to know exactly what they were doing.
“GOODEVENINGWELCOMETOTHESHOPSOMETIMESCALLEDTHEPLANTSHOPUSUALLYJUSTCALLEDTHESHOPBYTHERIVERHOWMAYWEHELPYOUTODAY.” Delivered in a single breath and at breakneck speed Ryo took a long moment fix hair blown by the winter wind to parse out exactly what had been semi-shouted at him by a child who appeared to be standing on a stool behind the counter.
“Well you got all the words right, Alice. But let’s try to take it about five times slower.” A woman not much older than him appeared in the crowded shop, brushing hair out of the girl’s face and shooting Ryo a soft smile.
Alice, as Ryo assumed the young woman was called, took a deep long breath, “Good evening, welcome to The Shop, sometimes called The Plant Shop, usually just called The Shop By The River. How may we help you today?”
He couldn’t help but smile broadly and half-bow, a hand over his heart, “Good evening Alice. I was wondering if I could please speak to the proprietor of this shop.”
It was clear fairly immediately that proprietor had been too complex a word but the woman who’d prompted a reduction in speed in favor of comprehension smiled again, one of the most genuinely heartwarming smiles he’d ever seen, and patted Alice on the back, “He means me, dear. Go help Mr. Castro. I know he thinks he’s the best at it, but nobody can pick the best damask rose blossoms like you can.” Alice’s face erupted into a supernova of a smile and she scampered across the shop to a handsome man sitting behind a mountain of dried roses, gently signing to a child next to him, apparently teaching them how to tell which ones were the best.
“Perry Abrams, owner and operator of this little slice of chaos, what can I do for you?”
Taking a moment to collect himself in the face of the unrelenting and blinding love Ryo swept hair out of his eyes before reaching out his hand, “Good evening Ms. Abrams. Ryoichi Katsuhoji. I have recently leased the apartment above your shop, in addition to a storefront three doors down. I wanted to come down to introduce myself and apologize if it has been too noisy over the past few days. I am mostly unpacked now and the noise will diminish.”
He was rewarded for this monologue with a brief pause, and then another absolutely brilliant smile, “So you’re the new shop everyone’s been buzzing about! The butcher paper over the windows very much gives a Christmas present vibe and the street can’t wait to unwrap it. It’s lovely to finally meet you, Mr. Katsuhoji. Alice!” the child from the counter sped back over, a crown of dried blossoms now resting in her flame-red hair, “Please run down the street and tell Chef Conrad that we’ve figured out who the new shop belongs to and we’re ready for the welcome basket. If Mr. Goshawk is outside tell him where you’re going”
“YESMSABRAMSSCUSEMEMRKATSUHOJI” Before he could respond Alice was out the door, pausing briefly to talk to a familiar dark haired man that seemed to constantly be standing outside, ostensibly guarding the shop. Ryo had never introduced himself to the man but they nodded at each other every morning when he left his apartment.
“As to the noise, Mr. Katsuhoji-”
“Just Ryo is fine, Ms. Abrams.”
“Then you’ll call me Perry.” It wasn’t really phrased as an option, and Ryo respected that. “As to the noise, Ryo. I’m more shocked that we don’t bother you with everything going on down here. As you can see, we run a bit of a chaotic operation.” Gesturing broadly to the shop around her Ryo took in the scene that her hand encompassed. Children and young men and women helped dry herbs, some carefully labelling, some tying bundles together, a few of the older ones over small cauldrons distilling essential oils. He had seen far more children and teenagers in this portion of the alley than he had elsewhere in the city, and there had been moments when he was fairly certain he’d been followed. Some greater story was unfolding in this portion of London that he wasn’t yet privy to, but was certainly on the outskirts of.
“I keep myself busy enough that by the time I am in a state of stillness to be bothered by outside noise it has long fallen silent.” A half step took him to a shelf lined with immaculately bundled herbs; nothing he couldn’t find in any herbalist’s anywhere in the world but clearly treated with a care that set this shop apart. He pulled a small bundle of licorice root, a larger bundle of dried basil, and an even larger bundle of dried mint down, setting them on the counter as he turned back to look at Perry, “Though I am glad I have not disturbed you with the ruckus of unpacking a life I had to move almost seven thousand miles. If at any point I am a disturbance please let me know so I may fix that.”
Before Perry could respond, the door opened again, the bluster of a frigid November bearing Alice in again, dried rose crown askew, with a young man, in his late teens from Ryo’s eye, right on her heels. It was difficult, however, to get too good a bead on the man accompanying Alice as he was mostly obscured behind one of the most mammoth baskets Ryo had ever seen in his life. Alice cleared a spot on the counter for him to set it down, and when he had relieved himself of his burden Ryo could get a better look at the young man who’d carried the load that would have crushed young Alice, for all her energy. He was thin, thinner even than Ryo himself, and carried himself in a way that issued to all who looked at him an apology for taking up space. But more striking than that were the violently neon blue eyes and the charcoal black veins snaking their way up his arms, the tell-tale signs of an addiction that Ryo had only heard whispered about at Mahoutokoro.
“Ch-Chef Conrad sends apologies, Ms. Abrams.” his hands were never still, flitting from his pockets, to the buttons on his shirt, to the choker around his neck in quick succession as it appeared the young man tried and failed to keep himself grounded, “Unfortunately h-he’s in the middle of d-dinner service or he’d come himself.”
“Thomas.” It wasn’t Perry that responded, but the handsome man who had been signing to a child over a mountain of dried roses, walking over from his portion of the shop while rolling sleeves down over arms too-muscled for a simple herbalist. “How many days are we up to now, mijo?”
Thomas’ face split into a slow smile, “Three weeks yesterday, Mr. Agusti.”
Both Perry and Mr. Agusti both pulled Thomas into a tight hug, their various congratulations overlapping and weaving in and out of each other and Ryo couldn’t help but smile at the honest love and support he was currently privy to. As they pulled away Agusti clasped Thomas’ forearm, “Three weeks to be proud of. We’re proud of you for it, I know Jake is too. Remember you can always call if you need an anchor. This only works if we’re all working together.”
The flash of genuine gratitude that illuminated Thomas’ face was pure and deep and again Ryo had the impression of a story he didn’t know all the pieces of. “Th-thanks Vic. I promise I will. If I need it. R-Rhys has been taking me to yoga with him. It’s really b-been helping.” Thomas turned from Vic to Ryo and straightened up just a little, gesturing to the massive basket on the counter which Ryo could see was filled with a smorgasbord of baked goods, jars of delicious looking preserved pickles and jams, some cleaning supplies, and at least two bottles of wine. “Chef Conrad wanted me to g-give you a heartfelt welcome to the neighborhood s-sir. He hopes you’ll come by to dine with us one evening s-so he can say so in person.”
Ryo stuck his hand out, shaking Thomas’ firmly, “Please thank Chef Conrad for me Thomas. As soon as I have my life in any semblance of order I will make his restaurant one of my first destinations.” Releasing the hand he started to poke through the contents of the basket, nodding sagely, “As to this far-too-kind gift from what I can only assume is both Chef Conrad, Ms A-” a gentle throat clearing made him quickly backtrack, “Perry, and many others in this neighborhood… your generosity is overwhelming. I will never be able to eat all of this on my own, and I have no family on this side of the world to share it with.” He could see several ravenous glances from the children who were trying to focus on the work at hand and failing miserably, “I wonder if any of you could please help me eat Chef Conrad’s cooking with the speed and vigor it deserves.” The horde that descended on the basket was faster than their tiny legs should have made them and Victor broke away to attempt to corral them as Ryo took the two bottles of wine and some supplies, pushing his three bundles of herbs across the counter, “And I would like to purchase these as well, Perry.”
She wrapped the herbs with care and placed them in a small bag, sliding it across the counter and patting his hand gently, “Any man who chooses to regift something special to my kids can have a few bundles of herbs on the house Ryo. This round’s on me.”
He smiled and bowed again, pushing hair out of his face as he turned to leave the shop before a small ginger comet collided with his knees; small Alice, face covered in frosting, giving him a tight hug, “VICSAYSWEGOTTASAYTHANKYOUWHENWEGETPRESENTS.” A deep inhale and a purposeful and slow exhale gave her enough stasis and grounding to get each word out individually, “Thank you for sharing super good food, Mr. Katsuhoji.”
“Alice. Any time I get something delicious and frosting covered I hope you are nearby to share it with.” Another hug and she vanished, back either to the fray around snacks or her pile of roses and he looked up to see that beautiful radiant smile stretch across Perry’s face.
“Welcome to the neighborhood, Ryo. We’re very happy to have you here.”
It had been a long and difficult move, but, in the middle of this oasis of warmth in the infancy of winter, Ryo felt the exact same way.
