Fic recs

Highest Bidder by @apparentlynotreallyfinnish One of the first Rhink fics I ever read, but NOT the last one I've read by this author, I completely recommend ANYTHING by them. This story is a revolving POV story wherein a young Link puts himself up for sexual services because he needs money and an older Rhett takes interest. Their interactions are the perfect blend of sweet and saucy!

One Man Band by @lallyloo I was looking for Rhink fic when I first started getting into the idea and this popped up from other rec lists. An AU in which Rhett is a traveling musician and Link owns a bar. The writing is crisp and made me enjoy things I'm normally not a fan of (piercing, tatts, a sort of friends-with-benefits dynamic) showing how strong Lally is as a writer. Everything they do is gold. I'm rec'ing this story just because it's the first I saved, but I could rec many many others. All *chef's kiss*

Safety Valve by isra - Honestly, I don't know if this writer has a Tumblr. I found this story again via rec lists and I can tell you right now, my story wouldn't exist without this one. The way they write Link's pain and internal struggle with his sexuality and attraction to Rhett is very much how I approached when I decided to write them. It felt so authentic and genuine and it truly inspired me. Hands down a fave.

Don't Blame Me by @rhettjmc Another spin on the selling sexual favors, but now with a young Rhett and older Link. So sexy and the angst is just fantastically delicious. Another writer with a breadth of great work - but, first read, first rec'd.

It Was Always You by @malienessan So, I'm legit behind on this, which is BS on my part but listen, LISTEN. I have to carve out time to pay it the attention it deserves because it's written from Link's POV and he's young and in love with Rhett and it is some heart wrenching beautiful writing. I can rec it without worry that it'll disappoint, because it's just that good. Read.

@peachworthy posts the most amazing content and is a fantastic person. If you're not following, you should! Writes fantastic work, records gorgeous audio, clips content others aren't blessed to have access to - I mean, the name fits - she's a peach. Honestly a forever follow for me.

@link-sans-specs creates/captures some jaw droppingly beautiful Link pics. Like my icon for example! *Waggles eyebrows* Also another low key cool person all around.

@likestrawberrywhine Not only a fantastic writer (one of the best in the fandom tbh) but someone not afraid to voice their opinion when it comes to GMM no matter what. Sometimes I disagree with their take (I like Stevie tbh) but I can respect it, and them, and it's refreshing to see someone just put it all out there. The posts/tags alone on GME wete entertaining - I promise you, you will never be bored when it comes to this blog.

If it’s almost the end of the year, and we think i can safely say that this has been an AMAZING year for fic in the rhink fandom! there have been so many incredible new authors, on top of authors that have been around for years who are still writing about our boys, and i wanted to give a little bit of recognition to some of my personal favorite fics written in 2019!

i am not in any way implying these are “the best” fics, just the ones that i’ve personally enjoyed. i’m mostly sticking to either completed mutli-chapter fics or longer one-shots, and i’m limiting myself to no more than one fic per author so i spread the love.

without further ado, my (personal) top rhink fics of 2019. (behind a cut, because this post is very long.)

If You’re Wondering If I Want You To by @ssodangdark Rating: Teen Chapters: 5 Words: 10,234

Summary: “The year is 2006 — you just crafted the perfect away message, The Fray is playing on your clock radio, and you're trying to figure out what band t-shirt to wear to school today. Meanwhile, two teenage boys meet for the first time and navigate their feelings for one another through the songs on one of their iPods.”

this fic is everything you could want in a high school au. it’s sweet, and full of pining, and comes with it’s own built-in soundtrack. i can’t recommend this fic enough. this fic is so sweet, you might get a cavity reading it.

Honorable Mentions: most of em’s other fics are oneshots, so i wanted to feature a longer fic, but i also have to acknowledge her oneshots too! Three’s a Crowd (rhett/link/jessie) and Chris Springs are two of my favorite fics and i would highly recommend reading them.

Don’t Hold Back by @likeaswitchinheat Rating: Explicit Chapters: 26 Words: 86,501

Summary: “Link has a lot of responsibilities resting on his gorgeous shoulders. It’s Rhett’s job to unburden him of all that. When Link is Rhett’s, he doesn’t have to think about a thing. Rhett will take care of him.”

laika is another ridiculously prolific author, and i’m actually ashamed that it took me until a few weeks ago to read this fic even though it’s been finished for months. this fic is basically half shameless filth and half feelings and angst, which is pretty much exactly what i look for in a fic. 

Honorable Mentions: i absolutely love all of laika’s oneshots, of which there are far too many to name, but i’ll put myself on blast for my particular tastes by giving special mention to Man Bites Dog and Selfie.

Candids by @captainsourwolf Rating: Explicit Chapters: 8 Words: 19,635

Summary: “Rhett is a photographer fresh out of SCAD. He lands his first gig soon after graduation, just a simple print ad for a high school advertising their new senior class wear. At the shoot he meets in-demand fashion model Link Neal. It's tense from the start. Rhett ends up being his photographer on most of his shoots, and at every single one Rhett starts a collection of candid shots that he keeps for himself, in a box of trinkets he finds comforting.”

i absolutely loved this fic. i loved the premise, and the slowburn and build up, and the tender longing between rhett and link in this fic. i’m such a slut for pining, which is why this ultimately won out over a couple of elizabeth’s other fics, which are also very good. 

Honorable Mentions: a very close second for this my favorite fic of elizabeth’s was None Like This, but i ultimately had to give it to Candids because i’m a sucker for that softness. Aftercare and hump a little also deserve to be mentioned, too, if you’re looking for oneshots.

Rhinestone Cowboy by @soho-x Rating: Explicit Chapters: 15 Words: 26,439

Summary: “If he was honest with himself, he could admit the glamour of being on tour for one of Country Music’s biggest acts had clouded his better judgement. He’d quickly dismissed all apprehensions regarding living in a conversion van for three months, instead focusing on the idea of working a stage during a live show, standing in the wings while country maverick Roy Walker played to crowds bigger than the population of the town Rhett grew up in. It was a dream come true for a small town boy like him.”

this fic hooked me right from the first chapter! i was absolutely in love with the premise of rhett and link as country music stars, and this fic did not disappoint. if you like tender slowburn and pining, you’ll absolutely love this fic. it killed me in the sweetest possible way.

Honorable Mentions: for how recently em jointed the fandom, she’s written a ton of fic! Stolen Moments, No Good Very Bad, #Dormlife, and Only For Your Very Space (unfinished) are some of my other favorites from her.

Apartment 69 by @apparentlynotreallyfinnish Rating: Explicit Chapters: 18 Words: 86,501

Summary: “Link has it all figured out. He has a plan for his life. He has a nice girlfriend and a nice job and a nice routine. It really doesn't mean anything that sometimes he gets off on watching men fuck each other. He's just curious. But when a famous gay porn star moves next door to him, his perfect plans start to fall apart.”

appa is one of the most prolific writers in the fandom, so it was really hard to narrow it down to just one fic from her. i actually almost put another fic of hers on here instead, but apartment 69 was the first fic of hers that i read, so i felt like i had to give it the edge over incognito if only for that.

this fic had me on the edge of my seat with every update, and it should be a testament to how much i loved this fic that i was genuinely shocked by how long it was, because i could have sworn it was less than 10 chapters. that’s how quickly i tore through it all.

Honorable Mentions: while i didn’t officially include them, i also want to mention her fics Incognito, I Only Want You to See Me (unfinished), NSFW, Wingman, and Let Me Be Your Light, as well as her entire library of oneshots. she is INCREDIBLY prolific so you can easily spend weeks going through her ao3 page and never run out of things to read.

remember that time in college I found your handcuffs? by @egocentrifuge Rating: Explicit Chapters: 3 Words: 10,435

Summary: “Rhett feels antsy, wants to leave this entire conversation about the fetish gear he found in their dorm behind, but he still wants to know despite his better judgement.

“Okay, the - dom? takes control of a scene. Why wouldn’t the dom just do whatever he wants?”

“Because it’s all about trust, man.” Link’s face is open and sincere in that way he only gets when he believes in something; Rhett can’t look away. “The sub trusts the dom to make it good for them, and so the dom does their best to. It can be a lot of pressure, but it’s - good, too, being able to make someone feel safe and taken care of, you know? For someone to be willing to be that vulnerable…”

Something in the way Link says it trickles warmly down Rhett’s spine, and he puts his beer down.

“Alright,” he says firmly. “Fine. I don’t understand it completely but that’s - that’s fine. As long as you’re both happy or whatever.” There are more questions Rhett wants to ask, but it’s - too much, for some reason. Not just knowing weird kinky details of Link’s sex life, but the way he’s talking about it.

It's twenty years before they discuss it again.”

eggsy has the market cornered on a very particular genre i like to call “porn that makes you cry.” this fic mostly gets the spot because a lot of eggsy’s other fics are much shorter and/or not on ao3, and for purposes of a fic rec, i really wanted to give something long enough to really sink your teeth into, but i an assure you that every single one of their fics should and would be on here if i didn’t limit myself to one fic per author.

eggsy packs an incredibly amount of feeling into a small amount of words, and strikes a perfect balance between hot, angsty, and loving. i cannot recommend eggsy’s work enough.

mike has so many amazing fics that it by all rights should have been impossible to narrow it down to my one favorite, but honestly, this was a surprisingly easy choice. in spite of how much i love every single fic of mike’s, this one was so beautifully written and poignant, and i don’t think any other fic has ever made me cry the way this fic did. it hurts — in the best possible way.

i started reading this fic one evening after work, and was so captivated by it that i stayed up until 3 am, passed out midway through a chapter, then went home early from work the next day (sick! i was legitimately sick!) and laid in bed with a fever reading through the rest of this fic. the last written work i plowed through with that kind of speed and determination was harry potter and the deathly hallows...ten years ago.

The Traveler by @the-average-bear Rating: Mature Chapters: 13 Words: 52,712

Summary: “Rhett's on a journey.”

this fic is probably tied with The Murmur of Yearning for my favorite rhink fic of all time, but i had to give The Traveler the edge only because it’s not...quite an au, and while both fics gave me a lot of feelings, this fic focuses on the rhett and link we know and love. it explores what might have been and what could be — and it touches on my favorite genre of fiction, which is sci-fi. 

rhett finds himself accidentally traveling between timelines, exploring what his life could have been like under different circumstances. the build up to the rhink content is slow, and while there’s some smut, it’s pretty minimal, so this is a very different type of fic than a lot of the others here. but god, if you want to feel every feeling possible about these boys, if you want to cry, if you want to be overwhelmed by how much rhett loves link (and vice versa)...? 

please, please read this fic.

I was trying to decide what to do with this one and all I could think about was post-apocalypse AUs for some reason. I didn’t want to try and create a whole new world in a ficlet so I borrowed one of yours. I hope you don’t mind. ^^ So, this is my little fanfic of You have (1) new message. If any of y’all have missed this amazing piece of rhink writing go read it immediately. This ficlet is set to some time after they’ve settled into Cypress Creek.

“Rhett?!” Link’s voice sounded from the sudden darkness. It was laced with worry – not yet panic, but Rhett knew he’d get there if not immediately reigned in. 

“I’m here,” Rhett said, purposefully keeping his voice steady and level. He could hear shuffling from the other room of their tiny accommodations.

“Where? I can’t…”

“Just follow my voice. But remember to watch out for the…” Rhett managed to get out before he heard the unmistakable sound of Link banging his foot.

“Ouch! Goddamn it!”

“…the doorstep,” Rhett finished his sentence with a sigh. “Gosh babe, how many times…?” Rhett shook his head and smiled into the darkness.  “Still can’t believe you can kill hunters left and right but never manage to miss the doorstep,” Rhett said with a smirk. He heard Link’s huff.

“Well, it’s just my impeccable aim,” Link replied indignant.

Suddenly, warm hands pressed against Rhett’s chest. Rhett settled his own on top of them and squeezed lightly.

“Hey,” Link muttered. Rhett could swear he heard the blush of embarrassment in his voice.

“Hi, stranger. Come here often?”

“Yeah, once in a while,” Link giggled and nuzzled his face against Rhett’s neck, moving it up sniffling his skin until he found Rhett’s lips with his own. The kiss was sweet and soft; a kiss of comfort, not of need.

“What’s going on?” Link asked then, the worry returning to his voice. Rhett let go of his hands and wrapped his arms around Link’s waist.

“The power went out. It’s not the end of the world.”

“Yeah, because that already happened,” Link deadpanned and made Rhett throw his head back in laughter.

“Wow. True. But we survived that. I’m pretty sure a pesky little power outage isn’t gonna get the better of us.”

“Should we check on Lila?” Link asked trying to step away from Rhett who wouldn’t let go of him.

“Link, if anything was wrong with Lila we would know. That girl’s got some healthy lungs on her.”

“Oh, yeah. You’re right. But…”

“Link, relax. This is not the first time this has happened. Remember last time. The power came back on before we even found the candles.”

“Yeah, I guess… But you don’t think…? I mean the barricades, they can’t have been breached, can they?” Link muttered. His voice was muffled by Rhett’s shirt Link had pressed his face against.

“Of course not. I just checked them today with Mike. They’re tight as a nun’s asshole.”

“Rhett! Oh my God,” Link laughed. Rhett smiled; satisfied that he’d gotten Link to relax considerably.

“What?!” he said feigning ignorance. “Speaking of…” he continued and his hands slid down and gently squeezed Link’s bottom. Link giggled again and slapped his hands away.

“Stop it! We’re in a crisis.”

“Are we? I really don’t think the temporary loss of power during the apocalypse is actually a serious enough incident to be considered a crisis. Eating the last of the cereal on the other hand…”

“Christ. You just won’t let that thing go, will you?”

“Nope. Not until you make it up to me,” Rhett said voice lowered almost to a purr. Link let out a yelp as Rhett’s hand slipped under the waistband of his sweats.

“Rhett!”

“You can stop me any time, Blue,” Rhett murmured against the dip of Link’s shoulder before sinking his teeth into it. Link drew a sharp breath that morphed into a needy moan when Rhett’s mouth started working on his neck and his hand found its way into Link’s boxers.  

“You know I won’t,” Link gasped and pressed himself against Rhett’s hand. Rhett smiled and drew in a deep breath smelling the familiar and crisp scent of Link. It still made his head swim and his stomach ache.

“Mmh, good. Let’s see if I can make you cum before the power comes back on.”

Writing Tag

I was tagged by @linkslipssinkships for this writing tag thingamajig. So when I haven’t actually written and I’ve just talked about myself, y’all should blame her ;)

Post-doing this note: If you’re a writer and see this, you should totally do it. I don’t often spend time being particularly thoughtful about why I write what I write. 

1. How long have you been writing? Did you dive in or did it take awhile?

I dove in pretty hard just over a year ago into the rhink fandom stuff. I’ve been writing stuff that only I ever saw for a very long time before that. I also studied writing in college.

2. What’s your favorite genre? (for writing or reading). Is there anything in particular that draws you to it?

I really like reading dystopian fiction. I fell in love with Margaret Atwood’s books in high school (a decade ago…) and have since been pretty obsessed with reading and writing stories about women. Which has made the whole almost exclusively writing men thing sort of weird for me. My writing (when I do it, I haven’t been good about it) that’s not about rhink is about women.

3. How many projects do you have currently? Are they connected or do they stand apart from each other?

Oh gosh. So many. I’m still working on Do You Wish It Was Me and True Blue. I have at least one outstanding almost-written one shot. @mythicalseries and I are GOING TO work on A Country of Two, and I have so so many other things I’m constantly wishing I could write. Alllllll the plot bunnies.

Also one book(?) idea I’ve done some work on that’s not related to a fandom.

4. Do you have a favorite “type” of main character to write with?

copy/paste that answer about writing women from above, I guess. When it comes to writing rhink, I find myself connecting more with pining!Rhett than with Link for whatever reason. I think it has something to do with his personality seeming less like myself. Link seems like a very complicated person, and after all this time I’m still not sure I’ve ever nailed him.

5. What kind of scenes do you enjoy writing most? Do you find them harder or easier to write?

Fights! They’re both hard and easy, I guess, in that I almost always start writing a fight scene with an idea of how the two characters will handle it. They also leave a lot of room for all kinds of feels.

6. What comes first when you first start: characters, world, or plot? A combination? Or are they a package deal?

I haven’t written a lot of rhink AU, but when I have, it’s been the characters that came to me first. I think that’s mostly true in writing non-rhink, but my project right now was very much a world that came to me. Still working through what the plot looks like, and it’s a little scary.

7. How much do you know about the worlds you create? Do you plan everything down to the finest detail or make it up on the fly as it becomes relevant?

I do a great deal of making things up on the fly, but, especially when I write rhink, I research pretty extensively. “What’s that building they’re standing in front of?” has turned into searching for decades-old property records for me. Especially with True Blue.

8. What kind of characters do you usually have front and center? Humans? Elves? Aliens? Dragons? Dogs? Sentient trees?

Just humans for now. And for the foreseeable future.

9. If you could pick one OC to drag out into the real world with you, who would you pick and why?

I don’t think he counts, but definitely Link from Comin’ On Strong. Mannnnn he was hot and he would be so much fun to go to bars with.

10. What is your current project? Tell us about it.

Do You Wish It Was Me and True Blue are my focus right now.

11. Do you have a writing group or community? Any place you go to plot or share ideas?

@linkslipssinkships and @mythicalseries! If I have an idea about True Blue lately, LLSS has been forced to hear it. It was sooo much fun brainstorming ideas in person with MS! <3

12. Do you have a favorite OC? Like, someone you have to give some happy ending or that you dislike being mean to?

I tend to write a lot of stuff trying to make it realistic, so I don’t have many OCs… I guess I’d have to say Beverly, from my fic Freedom to Stay. She was really into Rhett, but she knew Rhett needed a chance to see what would happen with Link. That’s actually one of my favorite fics I’ve written.

13. Do you write in short bursts or sit and type out a lot? Do you think your method helps or are you just happy to even get words down?

It really depends. There have been some days where I sit down and write most of a fic and times when I add a few words and walk away. Anything in between. I think not having a method certainly doesn’t work, because getting words down is a big thing for me these days.

14. Do you have a project that you just abandoned, or one that you put on the back burner because you wanted to wait until you’d cultivated your skills more?

True Blue, I guess. Not put it on the backburner to get better so much as to make sure when I’m writing it I do it how I want it. That fic is my baby, and I liked how the first couple chapters turned out, and now I’m terrified to add things to it and screw it up.

15. What is your favorite character trope? Do you use it in your own writing?

Pining, for sure. Especially for rhink fics. I don’t know that I’ve written any fics that don’t have some level of pining in them. For the person the character doesn’t have or for more certainty with them or for more of a commitment. Writing rhink really brings that out in me.

16. Any writers/authors you look up to or who have influenced your writing style?

I certainly hope so. Without any insinuation that my writing is *anything* like theirs, I’ll say that I love authors like Margaret Atwood and Kurt Vonnegut who can say a whole lot in a very small number of words. My favorite comments ever are about one word saying a lot.

17. Do you find it more difficult to write short stories or novels?

I love writing short things, for the same reason as above. I’ve never written a novel, but I think the length and the extension of long plots would inherently make them more difficult.

18. Have you ever imagined your ideal cover art for your writing? What does it look like?

Not really! I’m someone who deeply appreciates the visual arts but has a very limited ability to create any. Anatomical hearts, perhaps, for much of it.

19. What style of writing do you like reading or writing more? Simple and to the point? Descriptive and prosey?

Yes to both? Simple and to the point that is also descriptive and prosey is the ultimate challenge and the most beautiful when done right.

20. Would you rather see your story produced as a film, mini series, or musical/play?

The way TV is going lately, give me a mini series any day.

Rhink Au’s that I would like to write but likely won’t due to how poorly my stories turn out.

Rhett is secretly gay and the only one who know’s is his sister, His sister talks him into joining her yoga class claiming it’s good stress relief but in reality she wants to hook him up with her hot yoga instructor, Link Neal.

Link moves to a new town and can’t seem to stop bumping into a handsome bearded blond who owns a woodworking shop, it isn’t until a few days into living in his new house that he finds out the bearded blond is his neighbor, his neighbor who happens to love walking around naked, with his window blinds open.

Rhett pretends to need tutoring in high school in order to get close to the smart and attractive brunet he’s been eyeing for weeks, little does he know the brunet see’s right through him but is playing along anyway.

Link books a hotel room only to find there has been a mistake and the room has been double booked, causing he and a burly blond to have to share the room. It’s only for a week, what could go wrong? or should I say what could go right?.

I enjoy reading sex worker Rhink AUs, especially when it is Rhett who is the sex worker, but all the ones I have read so far very much focus on the fantasy element of it, with high class escorts and romanticising the profession. And that is fine, I enjoy reading it myself and people have the right to write what they want.

What I would really love to see is a gritty street sex worker /rent boy AU in which life is shit and dangerous and you never know whether you are going to make it back from the next ‘John’ alive or intact and the ever present fear and dread and living on the edge with people treating you like you have no rights. It would make for some beautiful angsty young Rhink, if it was tackled sensitively by one of the talented writers in this fandom.

I created my own headcanon a while ago, in which 18 year old Rhett ends up selling himself on the street after his parents throw him out of the house when they discovered him in bed with another boy, of course I can’t write for shit so it remains just an idea in my head.
