Mayor Menlove and Reverend Layton had a moment and this is not a drill! Did we all collectively call it or what?

Also, I was not expecting a sex-ed Sound of Music parody, but I'm kind of finding it super hilarious... kind of like it's straight out of SNL.

(I have no idea why I'm making a whole bunch of separate reaction posts instead of one cohesive long post for the entire episode, but... I guess that's how I'm doing it right now. I'll just... play it by ear, I guess)

Schmigadoon, Ep.3 – Cross That Bridge

Never realized there were so many deaths in musicals.  Well, we’re halfway through the season and we’re starting to see why things between Melissa and Josh aren’t working.  At least, we’re seeing some issues with Josh’s approach to the relationship.  Or rather, it’s really spotlighted in this episode.  We’ve seen things on both sides that could be issues and I’m guessing Melissa’s will be focused on soon.

The episode starts, like all the episodes, with a flashback.  This time Melissa and Josh are at a wedding and it’s very clear that they are on different pages on several things.  It also becomes very noticeable that Josh, when he doesn’t want to do something; he just doesn’t do it.  And it seems like....look, when your in a relationship, sometimes you do things that may not be your cup of tea, but is  something your partner likes.  Nothing that makes your truly uncomfortable, just something you wouldn’t do on your own. It doesn’t seem like that happens much in Melissa and Josh’s relationship.  To the point that it seems like they can’t even have a discussion about their relationship as it's not something he wants to talk about.  

We then cut back to Schmigadoon, with Melissa waking up in Danny’s bed.  Of course, sleeping with Melissa has made Danny a changed man and he’s clearly found the one.  It also becomes very clear that Danny has neither heard of a one-night stand or contraceptives. And, as he plans for his future family/life of crime (long song), Melissa sneaks away to find Josh.  Of course, she immediately finds out he’s engaged; which makes her angry…until she finds out why he’s engaged and she finds it hilarious.

At the same time, they also find out that they’ve been kicked out of the Hotel. It turns out the Mother Against the Future (um, sure), which is lead by Mildred, has decided that the two are immoral and therefore no one should give them shelter.  Melissa tells Josh she will try to talk with the Mayor and he should break off the engagement with Betsy.  

Josh takes a walk with Betsy and is about to break it off with her, when she mentions something about true love.  Josh realizes that he has no idea what true love means in this town (or in general, apparently) and wonders if this is his way out.  He tells Betsy that his family has an old tradition that says that he would be able to tell if they’re true lovers by crossing over a bridge.  They try to cross the bridge and he finds himself still stuck. At this point, he breaks it off with Betsy; who goes crying to her Pa.  However, Josh has an idea.

Meanwhile, Melissa is talking with the Mayor’s wife and realizing that the wife clearly doesn’t know why her husband goes on those long walks.  Anyway, news quickly spreads that Josh has broken up with Betsy.  Melissa goes to find Josh in hopes they can work things out.

Meanwhile, Josh has gathered every available woman in town and proceeds to cross over the bridge in hopes of finding his true love.  Of course, it doesn’t work and Melissa catches him in the act.  She makes it clear he’s on his own now and leaves.  Suddenly, a shot rings out!  Pa’s here and he’s pissed.  Josh runs back to town and runs into the Church.

It’s here where he’s given a vital clue about how true love ISN’T EASY AND TAKES WORK!  Josh seems to ponder this for a second until he realizes that he hasn’t walked the school teacher over the bridge and, even though she’s told everybody she’s not interested in marriage, she must be his true love.  I mean, he hasn’t given a damn about a woman’s agency yet, why start now?

Melissa, meanwhile, has decided to take a job as a Nurse (‘cause who’s heard of a lady Doctor? Certainly, not this town.) because it comes with free lodgings.  It’s at this point she meets….the young Doctor.  (Well, young is a relative term.  close to middle age Doctor, maybe?).

I have a hc about how Schmigadoon started to exist. Because i don't want to accept that it's a magical place created only for Melissa and Josh.

I believe someone created the town and I blame Mildred. (As she says - her grandfather founded the town. I think that's a cover up story)

I can see her as an ordinary woman, who's in love with a pretty reverend. She finds out he's gay but she can't let him go. Maybe she believes he's her true love. And maybe she makes a wish - to be with him, her true love, till the end of times. The leprechaun makes her wish come true.

Kinda.

She finds herself in a town called Schmigadoon with pretty houses and stuff around. And the only other person around is Reverend Layton. Somehow they marry but they aren't a happy couple, of course. Rev is gay and so she can't really have her true love.

I can actually see that Mildred used to hate singing and this was her punishment in a way that she got used to after some time.

Then people start to show up seeking true love (just like Mildred). She becomes more bitter.

But do the folks remember their life before Schmigadoon? I think they don't.

As we saw before, the folks don't really like Mildred but in the tribulation song she persuaded all of them to vote for her.

Maybe it's because she can in a way bend their will (being the creator of the town). If she likes them, she lets the folks stay, makes them believe that they grew up in Schmigadoon and thats it. If she doesn’t...I dont know, didnt think that through.

They stay, either because they can't find what their looking for or maybe Mildred doesn’t want them to leave and so they can't.

When Melissa and Josh come everything changes.

Mildred wants everyone to think that her marriage with Rev is happy because that's all she can do. Pretend. She wants at least the people to beileve they're a happy couple.

Then Mayor Menlove comes out. And I guess she knows that he has a crush on Rev and vice versa.

When he comes out too and their daughter shows up, she can't keep up the story she made up.

Melissa encourages her to try being a better person. And she tries.

She finally understands that she can't change all the people and that true love can't be forced.

After that maybe she relises that she is the reason why no one can leave. She asks the people if they want to leave. Some of them do and they just cross that bridge (withher permission) and ... they're just gone.

The leprechaun shows up. And I choose to believe he's proud of Mildred and so he gives her the choice to also leave and maybe try to find the true love she wanted.

She shooks her head.

She found out that true love has many forms. Not only a romantic one. In her heart she knows that she loves the people of Schmigadoon. And so she has to stay.

She will stay so that she can help all the people who find themselves in Schmigadoon. Because there was no one for her at the time. She doesn’t want that to happen to anyone else.

And who knows? Maybe one day no more people will come and she will close the door of her house, gives Schmigadoon a last look and crosses that bridge
