Why Fifth Avenue Is Amping Up Its Holiday Windows
Tumblr media
In early fall there was a problem on Fifth Avenue. In a matter of weeks, about 750,000 daily visitors would descend on the northern part of the thoroughfare to see the famous holiday windows, an uplifting, nostalgic tradition for many tourists and New Yorkers alike.Yet there was a depressing sight: four colossal buildings that were vacant, vacant, vacant, vacant. Until recently, the buildings had been the flagship locations for Polo Ralph Lauren, Henri Bendel, Massimo Dutti, and Tommy Hilfiger. To put it bluntly, said Michael Hirschfeld, who works in commercial real estate, it was “mood killing.”So the Fifth Avenue Association, which represents more than 120 establishments, sprung into action, deciding to do more of what Fifth Avenue does best: Holiday windows. The association hired the designer Mark Briggs, who has created window scenes for Harrods and Saks Fifth Avenue, to create four new displays for the empty buildings. The designs will not represent any company or brand, but rather the romance of the city in high winter, with scenes of ice skating in Central Park and skyscrapers made of gingerbread. It was an ideal project for Mr. Briggs. “Not to have to think about a product,” he said, “is the best thing for a creative.”The fact that Fifth Avenue tenants are teaming up to create something that belongs not to an individual retailer but to the area as a whole is a sign of what is to come. It’s time for Fifth Avenue, many local experts say, to remake itself. “Fifth Avenue has to change and go beyond its traditional missions,” said Jerome Barth, president of the Fifth Avenue Association. The problems of Fifth Avenue are well documented. The area in question, between 40th and 60th Streets, represents some of the most expensive commercial real estate in the city, and prices keep going up, according to CoStar Group, a company that provides real estate analytics and research. The ongoing e-commerce boom has not helped. In the past year alone, Fifth Avenue lost the Gap, Tommy Hilfiger, Henri Bendel, and Lord & Taylor. In 2017 it was Polo Ralph Lauren. Although a few companies like Puma and David Yurman have moved into some of the empty buildings, many remain.Even President Trump abandoned Fifth Avenue as his official residency this year.“Brands don’t need these dinosaurs,” said Stacey Widlitz, president of SW Retail Advisors. “I don’t see a world where these huge Fifth Avenue stores are going to be in high demand again.”But the area itself is still in high demand. More crowds than ever are flocking to Fifth Avenue, especially during the holidays. Mr. Barth singled out the Rockefeller Center subway station as an example. “A few years ago during the holidays it used to get 51,000 swipes a day,” he said. “Now it’s 70,000.”In an effort to embrace the swarms of people, the city recently announced that it would temporarily limit cars around certain parts of Fifth Avenue. But with store options on the wane, how will Fifth Avenue entertain its visitors? Some stores are opening restaurants, cafes and niche services only offered on Fifth Avenue. Others are putting on shows. And the neighborhood, in general, is attempting to move toward becoming a center for special events and exhibitions. On the eighth floor of Saks Fifth Avenue, tucked away behind the shoe displays, is Le Chalet, a Philippe Starck-designed cocktail bar. Indoor seats are next to fireplaces and covered in fur throws. Outdoor seats on a patio overlook Rockefeller Center. On the floor above is L’Avenue at Saks, a fine French restaurant. Both opened in February. There is also Tiffany & Co.’s Blue Box Cafe, and on Black Friday, Bergdorf Goodman is expected to open a new restaurant in the middle of its men’s store. The tables will be placed on an inside terrace, ideal for people watching.Other stores are offering products and services shoppers can’t get online, like the elaborate customization station on the top floor of the new Puma flagship, where you can get your initials embroidered on a shoe. And then there are the actual shows. On Nov. 25, Saks Fifth Avenue unveiled its Frozen 2-themed windows with a performance by the Broadway actress Idina Menzel. Fifth Avenue was closed down as a 50-person choir sang and danced in the street. Behind them a glittery light show transformed the department store’s facade. At the end of the performance fireworks shot out of the top of the building.Mr. Barth is planning more for Fifth Avenue. The specifics are a surprise, but he hinted at more theatrical performances, art installations and pop-up events.Still, many New Yorkers want to avoid the area at all costs, regardless of the cool new enticements.Inyang Akpan, 34, who lives in the East Village and owns a game developing company, can’t imagine spending time on Fifth Avenue. “I don’t even know what stores are up there anymore,” he said. “I want to go where the smaller brands are. Everyone wants these small curated experiences instead of huge flagships.”Clearly, Mr. Barth has his work cut out for him. In order to produce the new holiday windows, for example, he had to convince his board — a powerful group including executives from Tiffany & Co., the Trump Organization, The St. Regis New York and Rolex — of the idea. Mr. Barth does have some credibility to his name. For many years he worked at the Bryant Park Corporation and the Times Square Alliance, where he gained experience diversifying commercial centers. It was his idea to create the “show globes” — installations housed inside igloos that are inspired by Broadway shows — currently dotting Times Square. His ideas come from all different places, he said. “I read very widely, both novels, nonfiction, magazines, newspapers, and I follow about 200 blogs,” he said. “I travel, and I think about what is good in a space when I see one.”But transforming Fifth Avenue, a high-end shopping destination for over 150 years, into a center of interactive experiences that complement the stores, will be a different challenge for him.The holiday windows are his first test. “People aren’t used to working this way on Fifth Avenue,” he said. “Honestly, we are trying to build legitimacy. We have to show we can produce on a high level.”The holiday windows will be on display through January 5th. Source link Read the full article

Experience Toronto - 5 Spots to Discover Arts, Culture & Life
Tumblr media
Experiencing Toronto is more than just about climbing the CN Tower, watching a Blue Jays baseball game in the Rogers Centre, catching a Toronto Maple Leafs or Toronto Raptors game at the Air Canada Centre, visiting Canada's Hockey Hall of Fame or making the trek to Niagara Falls. The best part of Toronto is its eclectic mix of cultures, peoples, foods, shops, music, events and festivals.
With museums, art galleries, lounges and bars of all kinds, you'll need months to discover Toronto in its entirety. Get a taste of Greece in Toronto's Greek town on the Danforth; try Little Italy or Chinatown for a different flavour; maybe some pork bone soup in Koreatown or fine dining all over the city.
Toronto: A Port to the World
Although Toronto, Canada is the 4th largest city in North America, it is one of top three most multi cultural city in the world, as declared by the United Nations. It is a port to essentially every nationality and ethnicity in the world - with about 50% its population made up of non-Canadian-born residents.
The best time to visit Toronto is during the summer time from May to September because the city comes alive on summer evenings from its Harbourfront to its street festivals. During the winter from November to March is nice if you don't mind the snow - but there are lots of opportunities for skating and out-of-the-cold events.
5 Toronto Highlights to Discover Arts, Culture & Life
If it's your first time to Toronto, be sure to visit the major attractions: the CN Tower, the Hockey Hall of Fame, the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Royal Ontario Museum and the Science Centre. If you're looking to really experience Toronto, then these spots are for you!
1) Church & Wellesley.
This area in Toronto is considered Toronto's LGBT-oriented community or "Gay Village." It is located in downtown Toronto and has been developing since the 1980's. Today, many neighbourhoods in Toronto are gay-friendly but since Church street was the original, it remains the epicentre for many in the gay community. Tons of worthy shops, bars, restaurants, sushi spots and cafes line the streets in the area - and their patios and outdoor spaces are always packed during summer afternoons.
If you visit Toronto in June, you'll be able to take part in Toronto's Pride Week and Pride Parade, one of the largest Gay Pride festivals in the world. This year's will be held from June 20 to 29, 2008.
2) Ride the TTC.
One of the best ways to discover the culture and life of the city is to ride its public transit, and Toronto's is the Toronto Transit Commission or TTC: "The Better Way." Try riding the subway or one of the streetcars and you'll get a real glimpse and appreciation for the multicultural and huge diversity that exists amongst Toronto's population. Ride the streetcars and jump on and off with a daily or weekly pass. You'll be able to pass through tons of the different neighbourhoods, each with their own flavour and distinctiveness. You can observe the way people work - and don't work - with each other on their daily commutes from place to place but you'll get a sense of the way Toronto's citizens negotiate through its diversity and differences. This is definitely a unique experience - and one not to be missed.
3) Distillery District.
Located just east of the downtown Toronto core, the Distillery District in Toronto is one of its own cobble-stoned avenues. Originally built in 1832 as the Gooderham and Worts whisky distillery, it was transformed into a hip/artistic district in the 1990's. The historical buildings were preserved and redeveloped into a pedestrian district full of art galleries, restaurants, coffee houses, theatres, and creative spaces and studios for actors, photographers, painters and more. Today, the Mill Street Brewery is found here, whose products are well known throughout Toronto's bars and lounges.
Spend an afternoon here and don't miss out on coffee from Balzac's two-storey coffee house and a few chocolates from Soma chocolate maker.
4) Yorkville & Bloor Street.
For higher end culture, chic fashion and dazzling couture in downtown Toronto, Yorkville and Bloor Street are the place to be. Here, you'll find major high end stores like William Sonoma, Prada, Gucci, Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Vera Wang, Ferrari, Harry Rosen, Hugo Boss, and etc.
Just north of Bloor, you'll find Cumberland and Yorkville streets - a haven for celebrities and the affluent in Toronto. This is also where you'll find some of Toronto's best fine dining and chic establishments like Sassafraz, Pangaea, Le Trou Normand, Truffles and Flow. For a look into high-end produce, specialty foods, and Toronto's best pastries, visit Pusateri's at Bay and Yorkville Ave.
5) Chinatown & Kensington Market.
Although Toronto has about seven 'Chinatowns,' its major Chinatown today is located at Dundas and Spadina in downtown Toronto. Small and big Chinese restaurants alike sit along its streets along with food stalls selling fruit, long distance phone cards and super cheap sandals. You'll see barbeque meats in the windows and cooks with their woks. More and more, the Vietnamese community has also become a part of China town and have set up many Vietnamese sandwich stores as well as Pho noodle restaurants.
One of the other Chinatowns in Toronto is located north in the Scarborough/Markham area at Kennedy and Steeles Ave.: Pacific Mall, Market Village Mall and Splendid China Tower. This group of complexes form the largest Chinese mall in North America - yet retain the Hong Kong small-shop, boutique style of stores. This is where you'll find the best Chinese food in Toronto.
Kensington Market in Toronto is one of my favourite places in the world - and is hidden away just a block away, behind the busy bustle of Chinatown. During the summer, the https://startupheretoronto.com/partners/startgbc/starter-company-plus-program  streets close to cars and you can walk freely with your fair-trade coffee in hand up and down the streets to the sound of reggae pumping and the sights of people dancing, artwork, the smells of baked goods in the air and the colourful array of fruits and vegetables being sold in street stalls. It is the home of the modern day hippie, artist, dread-locked musician and bohemians.

Even more ideas for your Seattle adventure!
There are so many wonderful places to see, food to eat, and yes, coffee and craft beer to be consumed. Lots and lots of coffee and craft brews. That's why a few Mozzers have pulled together their favorite places to check out during your stay in the Emerald City.
No Anchor “By far my favorite place in Belltown. Incredibly unique beer selection and fresh local food combinations that you can’t find anywhere else.” – Abe Schmidt
Marination Ma Kai “Marination is one of the top food trucks in the country and now they have several brick and mortar restaurants. Marination Ma Kai is located in West Seattle and has a big outdoor patio with gorgeous views of downtown Seattle, it's a summer hotspot for a cool beverage and noms. Why is it quintessential Seattle? Not only is the food life changing, the view amazing, but getting there is an adventure! Just walk down to the waterfront and hop on the wonderful Seattle Water Taxi. The trip from downtown drops riders off right at the restaurant.”
Rapha Seattle “If you LOVE bicycles this place is a must-visit. One of only five US Rapha Clubhouses, Rapha Seattle is home to delicious coffee, fine food, and bicycle events.
The atmosphere is cool and inviting. Visitors are surrounded by the coolest bicycle gear and memorabilia. You can rent a Canyon bicycle to explore the city (Which is a big deal because you cannot buy Canyon bikes in America, yet). Rapha also does guided bike rides for the public and member only rides.” – James Daugherty
Taylor Shellfish (Pioneer Square, Capitol Hill, or Queen Anne) “The Puget Sound offers the best oysters in the world. What's great about Taylor Shellfish is that it's all about the oysters, the drinks and the people you're with in a simple, unpretentious, come-as-you-are atmosphere. There's nothing more quintessential to Seattle than that.”
The Point in Burien “An all-around great bar to grab a bite and a drink if your flight is delayed or you need to kill some time near the airport. The Point is 10 minutes from SeaTac, has a fantastic menu (including lots of gluten free options), a great cocktail menu, tap list, and big-screen TVs.” – Brittani Dinsmore
Hattie’s Hat “Ballard was an old fishing village. Hattie's Hat bar has been in continuous operation for over 100 years and the bar that you sit at was installed in 1907 or something. Incredible. The bartenders are all in Seattle bands, some of them moderately famous from the 1990s. Go in the early afternoon. Ask for Lupe or Lara. Sit at the bar. You'll thank me for it.“ – Brian Childs

Holy Mountain Brewery “Seattle is a beer city. Holy Mountain makes Seattle's best beer. Go there.” – Evelyn Baek
The Whale Wins, Revel, Joule, and Fremont Brewing “All are in the Fremont area and are each tasty in their own right. Besides if you don't like those options there are plenty of places to choose from in Fremont” – Steve Manjarrez
Ada’s Technical Books and Cafe "Coffee + super sleek bookstore that encourages women in tech and science. Need I say more?" – Meredith Crandell

Recepción del hotel Only You, en Madrid. / Alfredo Arias
DORMIR
