Academic lawyers publish draft IHR-compliant abortion legislation for Ireland #repealthe8th < SRHM
A guest blog post by Dr Ruth Fletcher r.fletcher[at]qmul.ac.uk “First, and perhaps most importantly, we were determined to design a law that would regulate abortion in Ireland by primary reference to the bodily integrity, welfare, agency, autonomy and self-determination of pregnant women” On 29th June @feministsatlaw, an open access journal, published draft abortion legislation for Ireland and…

nobody wants to talk about abortion, much less SING about it.
but i’ve been out on the road, trying. i was just uninvited from irelands biggest TV chat show, the late late show, for pushing back when they asked me to play a song about abortion. given that the north JUST legalized abortion, this is EXACTLY the time for this kind of art. but they’re afraid.
they shouldn’t be.
i wrote a long article about it here on medium,
“Singing About Abortion Isn’t Quite Allowed Yet. But it should be” (or: What Happened When I Tried to Play My Song About Abortion on Irish Television):
https://link.medium.com/qHZAcHhY20
please spread it around.
we are the media.

Charlotte Morabito “As Ireland goes #hometovote to #RepealThe8th today, please remember Savita Halappanavar who died of sepsis after being denied an abortion for a pregnancy even after doctors said miscarriage was inevitable. Her death was a catalyst for this referendum. She was 31.”

Lmao was just remembering those USian anti-choicers who came over to campaign against repealing the 8th in Ireland, then bragged on Facebook about getting paid for it, and were deported for violating their visa conditions 😂
Remember folks. Violating immigration law is bad, unless you’re trying to force your agenda on other countries. Coz we all know us poor ignorant Paddies need the Yanks to tell us what to think.

Even if everyone is telling you that something wrong is something right. Even if the whole world is telling you to move, it is your duty to plant yourself like a tree, look them in the eye, and say “no, you move.”
Photo taken in Waterford, Ireland, Spring 2018.
With what’s going on in the US, I thought I’d post this picture I from when I went to Europe with my dad since he went home to vote to Repeal the 8th.
It’s my favourite photo I took from that trip.

Yes, Richmond Street, Dublin
Thinking of Savita and all the women who suffered due to the 8th Amendment over the years. This mural has become a shrine to her memory, with dozens of moving messages reflecting on the result of yesterday’s referendum.
Today we have a much clearer picture of Ireland. The resounding decision to repeal the 8th and give women control over their own bodies feels like a sudden shift. But in some ways, it’s more like a fog has finally lifted, and we are seeing the true shape of our landscape for the first time, a landscape that has been obscured for so long.
The truth is, we are a compassionate, kind, caring people, who value empathy over ideology. The treatment of women here has been a national disgrace for far too long, but yesterday we rejected that legacy of shame and stigma. Irish women have fought for this result for so long, and because of that struggle, today we can all be proud to be Irish in a way we couldn’t before. Thank you, Mná ne hÉireann.

i would just like to take this time to say that if an overwhelmingly catholic country like ireland can choose to repeal the 8th in a landslide vote and allow women access to safe abortions, then there’s really no fucking excuse for all the other countries hiding behind religion in an effort to take away women’s rights to proper healthcare and medical services regarding their own bodies.
so, yeah.
also, fuck america. our country is literally going in the opposite direction right now.
p.s.- this blog is firmly pro-choice and if you didn’t know that by now, well now you know. :)

What I expect from 2019
LGBT rights being recognized for most countries
Bisexuals being given more respect
Transboys, Transmen, Transwomen having their rights recognized and being respected
Enby’s and those who are gender non-conforming being recognized and respected
Autistic people having their rights recognized and respected
Disabled people having their rights recognized and respected
Most people just getting along with each other, learning from their neighbours offline or online about life and how to learn and grow, while also spending time with them and creating positive memories with their fellow comrades
Most people trying out new experiences, meeting new people and accomplishing goals they’ve always wanted to
people being able to enjoy whatever piece of media or art from any decade as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone
Science making some black mirror esque technology and making aliens and robots feel welcome if they are finally given a chance to join humanity
Animals being protected and reserving the one piece of the world we will always try to shelter from capitalism...Nature
Brian May possibly making that space concert from that old Barbie movie a reality
The Cure making new material
ABBA making new material
that Labyrinth/Bedknobs and broomsticks musical being released
the “scene” subculture to make a comeback
smashing the state, ending the tories for good, yeah I might not believe in everything labour says but a government ran by them would be far better than the one we’re in now and making sure our voices are heard
Northern Ireland to repeal the 8th
social groups having  better representation in media, art and literature

Ireland has voted by a landslide to legalise abortion in a stunning outcome that marks a dramatic defeat for the Catholic church’s one-time domination of the Republic.
The Irish electorate voted by 1,429,981 votes to 723,632 in favour of abolishing a controversial constitutional amendment that gave equal legal status to the lives of a foetus and the woman carrying it. The result was a two-thirds majority: 66.4% yes to 33.6% no.
By voting yes in unexpectedly large numbers to abolish the eighth amendment to the Irish constitution, the country has enabled the government in Dublin to introduce abortion in Ireland’s health service up to 12 weeks into pregnancy.

Hi friends!
I am interrupting your irregularly scheduled comic update to make a post about a thing happening here on my island which is probably quite far away from wherever you are and so unlikely to affect you directly. Still, it's a Thing I have been very anxious and noisy about IRL* so I feel like I ought to tell you about it.
There's a referendum happening on May 25th (THIS FRIDAY!!). A yes vote would mean abortion is at last legalised in the Republic of Ireland, which, and let me very, very, very clear about this, would be an Extremely Good Thing. As I see it, a Yes vote would be an endorsement of three very basic principles that I wish weren't controversial but here we are. Those three basic principles are: 1) women are people 2) a foetus is not the same as a conscious human being 3) you are free to ignore other people's opinions regarding what you do with your own dang body
In general, #2 is the one the anti-choice campaigners tend to latch on to. Arguing with #1 immediately gives them away, hardly anyone does it explicitly. It's easier to tacitly call into question the humanity of women by suggesting they are not to be trusted. #3 anti-choicers tend to deflect by refusing to acknowledge that the moral framework they propose is a matter of opinion, and not fact. So that leaves us with #2. It's an emotive subject because humans as a species are very, very good at storytelling and it's easy, if you're so inclined, to see something at an early stage in its development and play a little movie in your head where you watch it grow up, whether it's an egg hatching or an embryo developing or a little aloe vera plant turning into a beautiful hefty green monster that haunts the bathroom and harbours spiders in its dusty crevices. But the passing of time and the action of various processes is necessary for each of these things to alter its structure, change its nature, and become something other than it is. Potential is beautiful and poetic and the decision may be painful for those or many other reasons but it is fundamentally a personal decision because a turtle egg is not the same as a turtle. A tree is not a chair, a cow is not a handbag, a smile is not an invitation, and a clenched fist is not a punch in the face, which is why I have never been charged with assault after conversing with someone who thinks that reproductive freedom shouldn't be a fundamental human right.
It's not only women that can get pregnant, of course, but misogyny is unequivocally the reason that abortion is illegal and it's the same malevolent force that propped up so much of the old system that I desperately want to believe we're now systematically dismantling on this weird little island. Marriage equality and the gender recognition act were huge symbolic steps. This one's even bigger. So c'mon lads, let's make it happen.
Oh and P.S. - in case anyone feels the need to try and argue this with me, please take a moment to consider that my entire position is predicated on the conviction that unsolicited opinions from outsiders re: bodily autonomy have precisely zero value. Whatever else might or might not be stirring in the private reaches of my bodily tissues - again, not your business - I have not a single solitary atom of interest anywhere in the seething fugue of my being for anything you might have to say on the subject of anyone else’s body. It doesn't matter. You don't matter. Your opinion doesn't matter.
Repeal the eighth.
Love, Quidditas
