The best way to create a bargain coupe on a budget is to start with a sedan and make a couple out of it. In the 1970s, #Renault actually created two completely separate coupes out of the same basic structure - the fwd Renault R12 sedan - and sold them side by side. The plainer looking (IMO prettier) R15, which resembled an Iso Lele from a distance, was the more basic model, while the #R17 with it’s sloping, louvered roof and gigantic #decouverable rollback sunroof, was the top spec, including a #Gordini variant. They debuted at the 1971 Paris show. By this time, U.S. Renault sales were very poor thanks to the unenviable reputation of the Dauphine, despite later, much improved cars like the R16 and R12. The 15 and 17 went on sale here in the summer of 1972 but were rarely seen. But the 12/15/17 just couldn’t excite the public despite considerable ad support - Renault sales slipped to 9,284 cars for 1973, then 5,780 in #1975 - a year when other efficient small cars were posting big gains. Renault had two solutions - the first was a better R17 - the Gordini, for 1975. The second was adding the R5 for 1976. By 1978, the R17 would be the only R12 variant still on sale in the U.S., and the then fuel-injected Gordini got more popular in its final seasons - 1978 and 1979, after the 17TS was dropped. The faster Gordini used Renault’s veteran 1647-cc four, now with fuel injection. In Europe, the original 1974 Gordini had filled the gap left by the end of the R12 Gordini - a faster vehicle that was a genuine tuner car - but the R17G wasn’t particularly similar to that car or as fast. It was the mega sunroof, relatively sharp handling, and efficiency that sold the package. The 17 Gordini was often criticized for not being as fast as a “real” Gordini but it wasn’t slow for it’s era, 95 hp and just 2,500 lbs. with five gears. It was however, expensive - almost as much as a 280Z in 1977, and a limited item. Probably fewer than 5,000 were sold here - and just a few hundred remain.
