Details of architectural elements of late 15th and early 16th century flemish paintings (that were on display in museum Hof van Busleyden in Mechelen, Belgium)
The fantastical architecture blending flemish, brabantine and some northern italian features. A place where the late medieval flemish traditions and italian renaissance features meet.
As typical for flemish art; the details and backgrounds are as interesting as the subjects on the foreground.

The old monastery Sant Miquel dels Reis in the city of València (Valencian Country).
This Renaissance-style monastery was built in the 16th and 17th centuries, with one of the earliest retable-façades in the Kingdom of Valencia (first photo). It was built on the place where the Medieval Sant Bernat de Rascanya monastery had previously stood, so some of the old walls of Sant Bernat de Rascanya were kept standing and re-used as part of the new Sant Miquel dels Reis.
Throughout its history, the building has had different uses. It was built to be a monastery, where the monks lived in from 1536 to 1835, year in which the state's confiscations of church property meant that religious orders had to leave many buildings, which would be sold to the public. Then, its artworks were sent to Valencia's Fine Arts Museum, and the books to the University of Valencia. The building was auctioned and sold to a man who wanted to demolish it to sell the material it's built of, but the Valencia City Council and the Acadèmia de Belles Arts de Sant Carles (Valencian fine arts academy) managed to stop that. Instead, the building became a refuge for beggars, a women's prison, and a storage house. In 1874, it was completely turned into a prison. But the worst came after the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), when the fascist dictatorship that emerged victorious from the war turned this building in a prison for political opponents and one of the largest repression centres in the city. It was used as a prison until 1966, and was abandoned. Restoration work started in 1997, and since the year 2000 it is the seat of the Valencian National Library (Biblioteca Valenciana).
