You're getting your health checkup and you ask him "read any good books recently?" and he's like "Yeah, I read this book on sea cucumbers the other day" and then you just have to listen to him talk about sea cucumbers for the next 20 minutes.

Tohma's is the Frostheim crest. Very official, he probably sends out a lot of official Frostheim business group texts.

Kaito's is a doodle astronaut! He has the same astronaut on his phone case! He canonically likes stars, but I wonder if this is a doodle he made himself and put it on his phone case or something?

Luca's is maybe a family crest?

Alan's is the default icon. He doesn't know how to set one up, if I were to take an educated guess. . . .

Leo's is himself, looking cute and innocent. Pretty sure this is an altered version of the 'Leo's is himself, looking cute and innocent. Pretty sure this is an altered version of the 'DATA DELETED' panel from Episode 2 Chapter 2.

Sho's is Bonnie!!! Fun fact, in Episode 2 Chapter 2 you can see that Bonnie has her name spraypainted/on a decal on her side!

Haru's is Peekaboo! Such a mommy blogger choice.

Towa's is some sort of flowers! I don't know flowers well enough to guess what kind though.

Ren's is the "NAW" poster! "NAW" is the in-world version of Jaws that Ren likes, and you can see the same poster over his bed.

Taiga's is a somewhat simplified, greyscale version of the Sinostra crest with a knife stabbing through it and a chain looping behind it. There are also roses growing behind it. Basically says "I Am The Boss Of Sinostra."

Romeo's is likely a brand logo. It looks like it's loosely inspired by the Gucci logo? I don't follow things like this, this honestly could be his family's business logo now that I think about it.

Ritsu's is just himself. Very professional.

Subaru's is hydrangeas I think! Hydrangeas in Japan represent a lot of things apparently, like fidelity, sincerity, remorse, and forgiveness, which all fit Subaru pretty well I think lol. . . .

Haku's is a riverside? I wonder if this is near where his family is from? It looks familiar, but a quick search isn't bringing anything up that would tell me where it is. . .

Zenji's is his professional logo I guess? The kanji used is 善 "Zen" from his first name! It means "good" or "right" or "virtue"!

Edward's appears to be a night sky full of stars. Not sure if the big glowing one is the moon or what. . . .

Rui's is a mixed drink! Assuming this is an actual cocktail of some sort, somebody else can probably figure out what it is. Given the AI generated nature of several images in the game, it's probably not real lol.

Lyca's is his blankie! Do not wash it. Or touch it. It's all he's got.

Yuri's is his signature! Simple and professional, but a little unique.

Jiro's is a winged asklepian/Rod of Asclepius in front of a blue cross? ⚕ Not sure what's at the top of the rod. A fancy syringe plunger maybe? It's very much a symbol of medicine and healing, so his is also very professional. Considering he sends you texts regarding your appointments, it might be the symbol of Mortkranken's medical office?

These are from the NPCs the PC was in the "Concert Buds" group chat! The icons are pretty generic, a cat silhouette staring at a starry sky(SickleMoon), a pink, blue, and yellow gradient swirl(Pickles), a cute panda(Corby), and spider lilies(Mina). Red spider lilies in Japan are a symbol of death--and Mina of course cursed the PC, allegedly cursing them to death in a year.

I wanted to ask if you could clear this up for me, if you play in third semester and you get to Maruki's Reality, we see Akechi appear to turn himself in on Christmas Eve so, Im not sure exactly why we dont see him do so when you go back to The True Reality? what was the reason for it, Im not clear on it a bits

Hi! In short, Atlus want to maintain the mystery of whether Akechi is canonically dead or alive. Thanks for your question!

... okay, okay. More seriously, Akechi arriving on Christmas Eve is the first use we see Maruki make of his enhanced power. Akechi is present in Shibuya to take the rap for Ren because Maruki puts him there. So when that is later undone, Akechi is no longer there—and Ren was arrested and detained, all along. Just as he was in the vanilla game.

but doesn't maruki's reality start on 12/31?

We-ell... kind of. As he says in his 1/1 journal entry, Maruki finally merges Mementos with reality late on 12/31, when Ren has his dream about the butterfly. But he's already using his new power before that point, to do nice things for his friends, the Phantom Thieves.

It's not just Akechi in Shibuya. The Christmas Eve party in Royal is very different from its counterpart in vanilla—well, sure. Ren's not in detention, so the whole mood is different. They talk about Akechi, but then they just move on to have fun. Well, it is Christmas.

But the New Year's party is a strange sequence of pleasant events. Futaba calls it "an actual, real-life good ending"! We hear not just that Ren's conviction is likely to be overturned, but that Shido is to be prosecuted for the crimes he confessed. In February, of course, Sae will tell us that it took months just to document his confession, and that he's being prosecuted only for breaches of electoral and funding law.

Something else to note about the Royal Christmas and New Year events: to my ear, they have a glib, superficial tone. Don't you think so? Matters of import come up, but the team move past them, to talk about trivialities, about their party and the fun they're having. It's kind of nice; this is who they might have been without the weight of responsibility, of grief. But equally, that weight should be there.

This is illustrated in the script. Both events feature a long string of sound effect emotes:

These SE lines are never translated, but what you see here is Joker, Ryuji, and Ann laughing—waraigoe, the sound of laughter, literally "a laughing voice". This laugh, on New Year's Eve, continues through the whole group, not just the Phantom Thieves but also Sojiro and even Sae.

Coincidence? There are group laughs later, after Joker is released, and at the big confidant party. But those are just attributed to 全員 zen'in ("everybody"), or 一同 ichidou ("all present"). These lists of identical laugh lines at the start of Maruki's reality are just a little bit unnerving. By the time of Maruki's bad ending, those brief lapses into reality, with all of its unpleasantness, are gone.

So yes, in small ways, Maruki is using his power even before he merges Mementos with reality late on 12/31. And here's one last thing to pay attention to on 12/24. You know how Maruki alters reality itself, by altering people—by changing everyone's cognition so that the world agrees on its new nature? Watch Sae, during this scene.

She's surprised, sure—but she never seems surprised that Akechi is alive. She's just surprised that he's turning himself in. In the vanilla scene, on the other hand, she explicitly says that Akechi is missing. Ren can bring up that Akechi is back from the dead, but Sae doesn't seem to care!

so where's akechi in the "real" timeline?

Can of worms. Which "real timeline"? There are two, depending on whether or not you maxed Akechi's confidant. In the vanilla timeline, you don't get him to rank 8 before the engine room, and he dies behind the door. But in the Royal timeline, you do get him to rank 8, and you keep your promise, and that gives Akechi the will to live.

(Yes, this is what I currently believe. And more than that, I think it's the true meaning of that creator interview, "the player's feelings are equivalent to the protagonist's cognition". It doesn't mean that guy on the platform can be a randomer in his school uniform or a ghost!—it means there's one route where he's dead, and one where he's alive.)

In the game as released, we don't know where Akechi is. But in his February deleted scene—where he's clearly alive—he tells us where he was, for precisely this reason.

He wasn't in Shibuya at all. He was at this refuge, wherever it is, going into hiding. He wasn't around to save Ren.

If this scene had been left in, this would have been the moment Akechi came out of safety, out of hiding, and gave up on his life—to do what's right once more, to confirm his 12/24 decision, and face justice in Ren's place. If you think Maruki altered him, and he would never have turned himself in otherwise—watch this scene again. Yeah, we were robbed.

what else does akechi say?

On 2/2, Akechi tells us how it happened:

Let's take a quick look at that line in Japanese:

Akechi けど、君たちと戦ったあと⋯{F1 82}ともう一度会うまで僕の中にハ���キリした記憶はなかった。 kedo, kimi-tachi to tatakatta ato... [Ren] to mou ichido au made boku no naka ni hakkiri shita kioku wa nakatta But after I fought against you all, I had a gap in my memory that ended with meeting up with [Ren] again. [lit. But, after I fought with you and the others… until I met back up with [Ren], I had no clear memories.]

hakkiri shita—"clear; distinct; vivid; plain; explicit; well-defined; sharp; loud and clear". hakkiri to kioku shiteiru—"to remember clearly". hakkiri shinai kioku—"unclear memories". hakkiri shita kioku—"clear memories".

Note that well. Akechi is not saying that he remembers nothing. He's saying he remembers nothing clear, which is substantively different, and not conveyed well by the English "a gap in my memory".

(He also switches address mid-sentence—in the first half of the line, he's addressing Ren as kimi ("you"), but then he cuts off, and addresses him as Ren. It looks like he switches from talking directly to Ren to talking to Maruki. And if you remember him being a dick about that moment on 1/2... this might be the line that reveals that actually, yeah, their promise in the engine room really did matter to him.)

Akechi believes he's dead on 2/2; I think there can be no question of that. There isn't a big reveal that he was alive all the time. And you can't even get this scene if you didn't max his confidant, if you didn't keep the promise—if Akechi didn't survive.

But there is an afterlife in the Persona universe, from which characters have even spoken—so I'd like to hear a little more, some day, about these "unclear memories" of his.

but how can he be alive

Bear in mind that the third semester looks identical (besides that engine room flashback on 1/2), regardless of whether or not you maxed Akechi's confidant. That's to say, whether Akechi dies in the engine room or not, the third semester does not change.

That means that everyone's perceptions of it cannot change. That includes Akechi. If he was dead and Maruki revived him, then he has no memories before he awakens in Shibuya, because he was dead. But if he wasn't dead—if he was at the refuge we see him at in the deleted scene, or in Hawaii, or on the Moon—if Maruki believes that he was dead, and attempts to revive him based on that conviction—

Well, then he creates a world where Goro Akechi died behind those shutters, doesn't he? A world where Akechi remembers nothing before he awakens in Shibuya, because now he was dead for those weeks. A world where, even though you saved him, Akechi died in the engine room. Just like in the vanilla timeline.

so i've just finished watching all the first episodes, so i wanted to give my thoughts on the first Wild Life session:

-so much fun i love it so much. i'm so glad they're all still having fun and continuing the series, and that Mumbo and Lizzie came back, despite dying early in Secret Life (i was a tiny bit worried they might get a bit dejected and pass on this one). also thrilled Ren is able to play this time; he's a blast

-there is a lot of mistrust going around which is very curious to me. most of it stems from previous seasons and has no bearing on what was happening at the time. Pearl straight up telling Cleo she expected her to betray her; Mumbo and Skizz not trusting Martyn, and then Grian; and then not trusting that Martyn just wanted to use their enchanter; the huge immediate aggression towards Scar when he came out of the mountain into Grian, Skizz and Mumbo's base; Mumbo not trusting Skizz (his teammate!) when he asked for someone to pass him a diamond; Scott, Cleo, Pearl and Impulse assuming Joel stole their cows, probably more i'm forgetting. it's definitely obvious to me that these people have learnt how the games work and learnt from the pain (as we do). i'm very curious to see if the general server mistrust grows, and the impact it has on everyone and the people

-i love JImmy, Big B, Lizzie and Ren forming a dnd party and Ren (in true bardic fashion) has a guitar within reach and is willing to break into song at the first campsite (this honestly might be my favourite moment from all the life series at the moment. the guitar within reach, Ren's beautiful voice, how much the others thought it was great. fantastic vibes all around)

-i really want Scar and Martyn to team up. they are both instantly mistrusted, to the point that both of them (in their first episodes, no less) expressed that if people are going to treat them like a villain, then they may as well act like it. if the two of them team up to take revenge on everyone being mean to them in a new series i think they would be a force to be reckoned with

-Skizz and Mumbo is a fantastic team-up. both very genuine people who are so funny together

-i hope they get the lag fixed, or that it was just from the size-changing mod and they don't have to deal with it for the rest of the series

-Gem and Joel's partnership - in the early days Gem is going to be a fantastic counterbalance for Joel; help keep him calmer and curb his wild ideas. But once Gem gives in to her own urges... oh boy

-does Big B know that he can go caving with people? cause he seemed to be under the impression that he had to get geared out before he could make friends and it would suck if he ended up alone all the time because it hasn't occurred to him that he can go caving with people right at the start

-double life thought: i know most people count Pearl as the winner, but did Scott technically win as well? cause they were the last pair alive, and died in the same tick. it probably doesn't matter at all, but i wonder about it sometimes (especially in how it would affect Martyn's lore but that's not canon)

-i don't think Jimmy has broken the canary curse. i subscribe to the theory that cause Lizzie died in the End, the Watchers weren't able to perceive it and then he was the first to die in the Overworld (i'm not counting Real Life as canon; it happened and i enjoyed it but it wasn't a full series and they were deliberately playing it silly as an april fool's joke. very glad that Cleo won though. hope they get a full series win as well)

-i'm glad that Tango and Skizz (deliberately) didn't team together, but i kinda wish Tango had ended up in a different group. him, Etho and Bdubs are fun, don't get me wrong, but a whole lot of the fun of the series is seeing people interact and work with people they don't usually. Tango and Jimmy was a top tier pairing in Double Life, and Tango is hilarious. i would love to see him branch out more and work with some more people

-there is more than just the wild card. Grian said he wasn't going to explain it, and i didn't notice anything else happening (but i'm also not expecting it to be much until they get to the late game). i think that there will be a wild card that affects the players, and then also something that affects the world? we'll see, i guess

-now that everyone who has played is playing (i'm pretty sure? if i've forgotten someone i'm gonna be sad) who is gonna sub in if needed?

-i love Mumbo's "that was sub-one intelligence mate" when they all fell 🤣

-i'm not sure what the purpose of including the creakings or whatever they're called? nevermind i just looked it up and they're going to be in the game at some point. weird. i'm not sure how i feel about creakings coming to minecraft though

-very glad they've got six lives this time. it will both allow them to not worry so much about mistakes and accidents (as evidenced by Pearl) and encourage them to take risks, which will be fantastic

- he has asymmetrical earrings, one stud on one ear and two in the other. curious decision. but I do adore it.

- I love how he looks like he's trying to pose in a "I'm not posing, this is natural" way in his "melancholic misfit" card and in his sr uniform card and his casual outfit r card because it just makes me think he does care a lot about how he looks and how he's perceived. I just think he's the kind of person who spends a decent amount of thought and time to put together and outfit that looks like he's NOT trying but also doesn't make him look slobby. He spends time making his hair the Right amount of "I didn't do anything to it" but he did. For sure. so I also think he smells nice and fights really hard against smelling like the diner or any of the animals in Jabberwock. he puts effort in. He just won't let it be obvious. But I Know.

- I think he's one of the taller (not tallest but not mid or shortest) ones canonically? and I'm personally a believer in him just being bigger than he wants to even acknowledge. Like he doesn't want to take up space or be the guy who someone looks at when they're like "I need a strong man to help me carry these chairs!" Bc he doesn't want to help, but everyone probably was like. 👀 You will help, right? You can carry it right? case in point, carrying Haru in the Jabberwock chapters and being like whatever I'm not that strong, it's just easy when you do it like this. Okay. But also how did you know that? Also no, no it's not that easy to just fireman carry someone AND a little octopus AND a little bunny monster. I know you're a ghoul but christ. And he complains that Haru makes him lug around heavy things around Jabberwock. I'm only stating facts here.

I'm crazy and I researched the demon that his stigma is likely unscrambled out to be. Of course take this all with a grain of salt because although I screenshot these from book excepts available through Google scholar, well... It's demonology and hermeticism and occultism and I'm not here to debate their credibility.

Anyway. Not much that explains explicitly what Ren's stigma would be, but our tsundere lazy gamer bf being contracted to a demon who ENCOURAGES sloth? Yeah that tracks.

and again, the commonality here is that 1) Astaroth stinky and 2) has some kind of knowledge of the past, present, and future/can divine these things at will. So? Why is his stigma related to cleaning/making the mess disappear? Could it have to do something with this control over the past/present/future? Can he change when something is occurring/has occurred? I have no clue, especially when, when it comes to ghouls who have some kind of idea about the Timeline, signs point to Taiga being the one to have that knowledge. If you look up Balam in the same books, well...

There is considerable overlap. So.... I don't know what to come away from this with lmao

I hesitate to make any theories based on the evolution from a fertility goddess because it's a reach and I have little to no expectation that it will be a point in his lore in game, but the information is there for you to do with what you will.

There's not that much like juicy information I could find in my short search that wasn't pay-walled or of dubious authenticity (reddit, blog post from 2003, etc). I could probably spend the time and find more, but alas, I don't have that college access to databases anymore </3 Please let me know if you come to any theories from this though!!

+ You met Ren at Leblanc when he was learning how to make coffee. You were his first customer, the one he served while Sojiro was away. The drink wasn't great but you figured the sight of Amamiya made up for the inconvenience.

+ Then you came back a few more times and exchanged casual information on trivial topics like the weather. In time, you started talking about school, where you learned some uninteresting information about Shujin Academy. The fact that he had a criminal record surprised you a lot. You found out about it from his guardian by accident but you didn't pursue the subject. However, it gave you the courage to tell him about your problem.

+ When you found a part-time job at a ramen shop, you felt like you had won the lottery. The stakes were high and the tips were big. Over time, however, it turned out to be just a front for another, less moral business. You wanted to leave but your employer made it difficult for you, and soon his true nature was revealed. He threatened to send out suggestive-looking photos taken secretly when a customer sat you on his lap.

+ Ren was surprised that you trusted him so much. Usually, he had to find out about such things from people himself or it happened by accident. He tried his best to comfort you. He brewed some lemon balm, ran for some tissues and sat Morgana on your lap. When you started crying in earnest, he rubbed your back soothingly, assuring you that everything would be okay.

+ At first, you thought these were nice but empty words. That's why you were so surprised when they became reality some time later. Especially since you accidentally fell into the Metaverse. The amount of new, fascinating information was extraordinary to you. It also allowed you to get to know Amamiya a little better from a completely different side. You awakened your persona by trying to save him, even though he didn't need it at all. In the process, you managed to change your boss's heart together.

+ After all that action, you made a lot of new friends. The Phantom Thieves group had a new member and it became common to spend time together. That's why you started to miss being alone with Ren. It slipped out when you were walking through Mementos one day. Joker smiled and asked if you wanted to go to the movies. You agreed and went to get a few drinks.

+ The previous sentence describes your relationship quite well. Sometimes you don't have time for everything, so you have to juggle different responsibilities. Whether it's investigating changes of heart or making coffee together in Leblanc. There aren't many moments left for typical dates, so these are especially important to you.

+ Joker is much more of a flirt when he shows his persona. You don't hold him back. He often kisses your hand or unexpectedly grabs you by the waist to sneak over the enemy. In the ordinary world, you are much more subdued. People see you as a quiet, in-love couple of busy teenagers.

+ Sojiro and Morgana are your biggest fans. Ren's guardian keeps inviting you to the coffee shop, saying you're a good influence on his ward. He also gives great advice when you're arguing (and makes much better coffee than your boyfriend but you'd rather not bring that up...).

+ You are not overly protective of each other. You usually know that the other is strong enough to cope. That doesn't mean that you leave each other in need but you usually just don't need it.

+ You eat curry. Lots of curry. All the time. You bought Ren a big pot as a present so he could make even better versions of the dish. He bought you a gun. For the Phantom Thieves' purposes, of course but you were very happy. Much more than you were over the bracelet for your last birthday.

+ If you ask him hard enough, he lets you wear his black coat but only for a moment. He doesn't mind when you take off his glasses to try them on and give him a kiss on the nose in return.

+ You're interesting. You share secrets that the world doesn't know, although you feel like your boyfriend still has a few more secrets. You hope to learn them all in time.

📜 No glitch powers or awareness anymore. Keeps most of his backstory intact, but gets og!Angel's main plot relevant traits which are: 

Secretly obsessed with AoG and therefore Haruko (this is extremely funny to me).

Someone proposed to him as a kid and he doesn't remember. 

Moved back to Corland, lives in a crappy apartment, works as a librarian.

📜 For the sake of the plot being able to move forward, he can't be as clever or observant but otherwise their personality is pretty much the same. Just without the Angel obsession.

📜 (Lack of) friendship with other characters?? Probably treats them the same as River at best: he doesn't really mind most of them. This is more like a debuff so there's at least a guarantee that Ren won't wind up on another character’s route unless Angel majorly fucks up. Also I can't imagine him putting up with any of the main cast besides Conan for more than 5 minutes.

📜 I think it's funny for River and Leon to swap places too!! So River also proposed to Ren lmfao (and Leon still gets to be Angel’s best friend, only now he’s cautiously supportive of all the wild shit they have to do to make the game progress).

📜 Their goal is to leave, but they aren’t even sure how to. Has to play the manipulative yandere role in some ways, otherwise the game falls apart.

📜 Angel’s only inherited traits are the ones [REDACTED] loses, so glitch powers + awareness. They at least have isekai semi-omniscience: 

Knows they're in a yandere romance game 

Knows a few of the characters from browsing social media 

Can see the UI and therefore the choices Ren makes 

Hit by the truck once they press the start button so they don’t know much of the plot outside of meeting Ren at the library

💙 Game Rules - that Angel is not aware of without doing some trial and error

📚 The plot/narration/dialogue etc. doesn't have to (and logically can't) be one-for-one, but pivotal choices remain the same.

📚 The day restarts by itself if Angel’s meter is too low to make any progress (as in [REDACTED] doesn't show enough interest, or shows hostility towards them). Angel can also restart the day themselves once they figure out how the glitch powers work.

📚 Choices that would normally lead to dead ends force Angel to end and restart them the same way [REDACTED] does—by breaking in to his apartment at night.

📚 They can't escape until they reach the true ending to reset the game back to normal, and reach another ending as og!Angel. Except now [REDACTED] remembers everything that happened.

💙 Goofy things to chew on

😋 [REDACTED] would still be a clean freak, so finding the mattress with a hole on day 1 would absolutely piss him off. Bro (rightfully) harasses their landlord 24/7.

😋 [REDACTED] also still terrible with finances… poor Angel has to figure out asap how to hack to give him more money before he has to move in with River (River route canon!!!).

😋 [REDACTED] either has to ignore Teo’s entire existence, or every single interaction is a minefield since Teo would live for pissing him off. River (poorly) plays mediator.

😋 Angel could outright suck at murder. Sledgehammer? Too heavy. Knives? Too messy. Screaming on the inside when [REDACTED] still doesn’t go home with them on day 2 after they’ve tried so hard. Olivia getting murdered simply does not happen anymore, they give up and force another reset.

😋 Elanor having the worst time at work because [REDACTED] gets customer complaints every single day but Conan won't fire him (the plot compels him). And then mutters insults about her being clumsy when she tries to correct his manners.

😋How are Moth and [REDACTED] even friends... enemies on the forums until some third party comes in with the most wild take on AoG?? Enemy of my enemy is my friend. But most of the time they're insulting each other.

😋 Leon watching Angel lose their shit seemingly out of nowhere (because of all the restarts) during a hangout. Consoling them awkwardly while they cry about the emo boy they’ve been stalking and how they don’t know how to ride a motorcycle.

😋 The trio being River, Jae, and Teo instead has disaster possibilities. Leon was the one keeping them from getting TOO destructive, and I feel like River is absolutely on board with every terrible idea. So Corland might as well be going up in flames in the background while Angel attempts romance.

💜 And a short fic!!! Angel's "first" day

Day 1, Attempt #0

You know right away that you’re in some type of isekai situation. An oddly luxurious but empty apartment that you woke up in. A hallway that’s just as empty, and when you knock on all the neighboring doors, nobody’s home. Weird, but not enough to set off any alarms. Getting back home should be simple. 

You head to the library and finally find someone, at least. That blonde girl Ellen? Elaine? Whatever her name is, she smiles as you walk in… and then greets you like a patron? Weren’t you meant to be co-workers? You’re completely confused until the person that you spot in a far aisle isn’t a pink-haired stranger, but instead someone decked head to toe in black fabric and silver chains.

Ohh it’s THIS one. The one you’ve seen in fan art sometimes. He’s supposed to be the real Ren, but you thought he’d be dressed up as “Haruko" at first. Something is wrong.

You slowly walk up and tap his shoulder, but they recoil at your presence. There’s a name tag stuck to his shirt—did he work here? The name is scribbled out completely.

“Um… I was wondering if you could help me?” you timidly ask.

His eyes roll as if you’re bothering him, instead of asking him to do his job. “Y’lookin’ for somethin’?” [REDACTED] mutters.

“Yes! Sort of. It's a long story. Maybe we could go to your place and talk?” Normally, you aren't this forward. But from what little you've read, they're the type to go along with anything his ‘Angel’ says, so this should be easy.

Something pops up in front of you. A small pair of black boxes with words in them. “Invite them over” in one, and “Don't invite them over” in the other. Finally, something like a system. You were wondering if you'd have to play through the game without any clear help. 

You reach your hand out, but the second choice seems to get chosen all on its own, and the menu disappears once more. You worriedly look back up only to be met with pure disgust in the man's gaze.

“...How ‘bout y’do us both a favor n’ fuck off, yeah?” the venom in his tone startles you, forcing you to take a few steps back. “I'd rather not lose my job f’beating the shit out of a patron.”

“What—”

“Leave.”

Day 2, Attempt #14

It took you longer than you wanted to admit to realize that the pink hair dye in the bathroom was meant for you. 

On the 9th time you approached [REDACTED] for your ‘meet cute,’ you’d finally noticed the little character pin keeping his scribbled out name tag in place. An acrylic, chibi face that looked strikingly similar to the bloodied image on the title screen you saw before winding up in the game.

The thought didn’t occur to you until then. Talking to him was like pulling teeth when he didn’t even care to try, but… If you were taking his place, and they were taking yours… wouldn’t he be more open to talking with someone that was maybe into the same weird anime he was?

So you reluctantly bleached and dyed your hair in pastel pink, put on the sweater despite the horrid summer weather, and went off to the library once again. Unfortunately, it worked. 

While he wasn’t outright hostile like the first couple of times, he wasn’t completely interested, either. But the conversation was friendly enough. As friendly as they seemed capable of being, anyway.

Thanks to frying your hair, you made it all the way through the day after a few more tries. You even managed to get invited over somehow. Instead of waking up in that all too familiar empty apartment for the millionth time, you woke up on a terribly put together couch. Just as you sat up to stretch and work the kinks out of your back, you spotted a rat skittering behind a table across the room.

You were grateful that he hadn’t chosen to make you sleep on the floor.

Thinking about Rui wanting to touch [PC] but the closest they'll ever be is by sharing earphones or by playing in VR together where he can feel closer to her.

Also, thinking about Jin angst where when [PC] becomes the anomaly, she'll take the form of his mother's favourite flowers.

(but then again, I could be wrong. Before I started the game I thought Sho and Jin were brothers lol.)

Thinking of when [PC] would invite Sho to Jabberwock and the fox anomaly that scratched/bit [I don't remember], Haru would go to Sho.

Haru: OH NO, THAT ANOMALY DOE-

Sho: *petting the anomaly*

Ed: *Cue lecture of how anomalies and humans are different and cannot coexist* except Ed doesn't exist in this scenario and I just added him cause I miss the old man.

also then Haru begging Ren to become friends with Sho "the player" so he can get some help with the more aggressive anomalies. and Ren going: "No. Absolutely not."

BUT THEY do end up as friends because Ren finds someone who can wrap their head around the idea of log-in bonuses.

I think [PC]'s favourite staff is Dante. He calls her "problem child", this is canon. jkjk

Off the top of my head, I think these are some good friends:

Haru and Tohma: two tired men who work a lot and bond because of their exhaustion 🤝 Haru could go to the vault whenever he is suffering from heat exhaustion after spending too much time under the sun and Tohma could take his walks around Jabberwock’s fields! Mutual benefits!

Lyca, Kaito and Luca: @ghoulspaw had the great idea that Kaito and Luca would be the best boys to play with Lyca >:3 and I think they'd be quite understanding (Kaito would take a while to warm up to him because he's a wuss) and Luca could help Lyca with his studies!!!

Alan and Lyca: I promise not all of them will involve Lyca. But I JUST KNOW Lyca would be :O!!!!!! after seeing Alan and how strong he is. Cue new sparring buddy for Alan!!!!

Kaito and Sho: I think this is either a bit canon or someone else already had a headcanon??? But Kaito bakes sweets I think?? AM I THINKING OF A FIC I READ???? But anyway, Sho and him could exchange recipes! Leo would hate it though because he hates Kaito but That's Not About Him.

Ed and Zenji: come on. You can't tell me Ed doesn't see ghosts. Zenji would be more than happy to watch youtube with Ed and would force him to like every video he posts AND subscribe. And hit the bell.

Ren and Kaito: they would be that meme that's a bunch of ppl thinking "wow these people are a bunch of freaks! I'm the only normal one here." Except they would think "wow this guy is a loser. Thank goodness I'm not like that!" In the end, they are both losers and Ren will worsen Kaito's gambling addiction by introducing him to a bunch of gacha games.

Regarding Towa's nicknames, I genuinely think that him nicknaming people comes from a place of disdain. Like, his nicknames aren't necessarily based on the language of flowers. Sometimes, he just associates the characteristic of the plant with the character's personalities.

Edward is Rafflesia because rafflesia is the corpse flower, which smells rotten and like dead bodies. Ren is Wolfsbane because it's extremely poisonous, even to the touch. PC is Dandelion because it's a weed and it's weak, and Towa made it very clear that he thinks PC is cute because she's weak.

I don't actually know why Kaito is Coriander, but given that some people are born with the genes that make coriander taste like soap, maybe it's a nod to the fact that not everyone likes him (since he's not very well liked in Frostheim)???? Genuinely have no idea

As for Zenji, I imagine Towa associated him with Iris based on one of the flower's meaning, which is "bearer of messages and a symbol of deep sentiments" which... fits Zenji, his role in Hotarubi and his love for his baby brother quite well.

And I THINK that he doesn't refer to Haru as a flower/herb because he genuinely likes and respects Haru (unlike Ren and Ed) and doesn't think of him as someone weak and pathetic (unlike PC and Kaito).

SO.......... KNOWING ALL THAT...... now let's get into the name ideas *rubs hands* not all of them will be associated with the flower's meanings btw!!

Alan: anthurium! It's the strongest flower >:)

Sho: basil or thyme merely because of how useful they are in cuisine hehe

Taiga: with how much Taiga raids Jabberwock, Towa probably already got a nickname for him, but if it was me, I'd say petunia because one of its meanings is trouble and he's always causing Haru trouble.

Romeo: mandrake. Because he screams a lot LMAO and mandrake is that root that, in myths, people say screams when you uproot it.

Haku: lotus!!! One of its meanings is mystery and I think it fits him since he's allllll mysterious

Subaru: wisteria, I can't associate him with any other flower 😭

Lyca: lupine, for obvious reasons. It's a legume and it means wolf!!!!

Jiro: okay this name is UGLY but: rhododendron. It's means "beware" in Victorian flower language!

Part 2: Session 1 & 2.

Lives

First, lives remain the same so:

Scar, Pearl and Tango have 6 lives.

Joel has 5 lives.

Bdubs, Etho, Martyn, Lizzie and Mumbo have 4 lives.

BigB, Impulse, Skizz have 3 lives.

Grian, Ren, Scott, Jimmy and Cleo have 2 lives.

Session 1

Bdubs is still chosen as the boogeyman for this session.

Scar links *rolls randomizer* Scott and Pearl for the session.

Grian's ability tells him that only one boogeyman is active.

Martyn gets these 3 random rules to choose from: "Everyone must wear leather boots", "No one is allowed to use axes" and "Everyone must give an item to every person they meet". I'm going to say he chooses the last one as the first two are just annoying.

Scott still find Pearl and promises friendship for a life, this time he doesn't need to find a cold biome as one of his abilities can change a 64x64 area into the ice plains biome so he can just settle down anywhere... Also being linked is another reason to work together for this.

Grian still "steals" Scar's life but as Scar's origin/domain allows him to gift one life a session without losing lives he doesn't lose anything.

Scar boogeyman stunt works as well as canon... aka, only BigB falls for it.

BdoubleO fools Grian and... yeah, Grian still dies. Didn't see that coming did he?... Please laugh.

When Mumbo is asked to choose is when changes truly start to happen because the most Grian can offer is sugarcane and maybe some resources but Scar can offer his bonus gifted life at the start of the next session...so uh... War and Love team (Scar's domain is technically Connection and not love but shhhhhh).

Tango still makes the betting game. Etho, Joel and Bdubs all bet one life and Lizzie still creates the fairy fort.

Magic Mountain still forms but with the addition of Mumbo in the mix, wonder how this will go. Is it still called magic mountain? Yeah, probably.

Pearl ends her session by gifting a life to Scott and Scott setting the 64x64 area in the Scottage.

Scar has 6 lives.

Pearl has 5 lives.

Session 2

Scar and Joel are still the boogeyman, Grian discovers that two boogeyman exist.

Scar links Grian and Jimmy's healthbars as revenge for Grian scamming him at the start of last season. He then (after some haggling) makes good on his promise and gifts Mumbo this sessions bonus life cementing the alliance.

Martyn is given these 3 rules to choose from for the session: Everyone is allowed to wear helmets. Everyone must keep their left hand free. No one is allowed to wear chestplates. (Another bout of boring ones sigh) He choses the helmets as the other two are kinda meh.

Joel and Scar still discover they are both boogeymen and work together to get kills, Mumbo works on the Magic Mountain base.

Cleo gives Tango sugarcane for a life, that doesn't change.

Mumbo...doesn't go into the Nether with Martyn as they don't have a reason to go together...and he's not the guy to go alone... Martyn is so I think he dies in Mumbo's stead. We get brute boy 3 seasons earlier.

Now, Joel attacks Lizzie and in the process dies... Lizzie probably uses her storm summoning ability as she is stronger during storms...that is good for her as it stops the mobs from getting her and for Scott as it causes snow to form in his base.

BEST still forms... Day, Mist, Poison and Hearth... That's one interesting group.

Mumbo being part of magical mountain means he doesn't kill Joel and allows him to get a kill on Martyn...but also means that Scar doesn't kill him... so Joel is cured...but Scar isn't.

This means that Martyn has no opportunity to sneak Ren Nether Wart.

I want to say Lizzie doesn't bet on Joel going red first for Tango's game...it isn't like secret life's dye for debris trade because she knows how lives work more then netherite.

Scar still goes to Scott and Pearl... though instead of trapping their base like Joel he just threatens them like he did in session 1 and kills Scott when he refuses...and is then killed by Pearl.

The enchanting table remains safe in Joel's (and therefore Magical Mountain) inventory and Lizzie only gives away a life for Ren's assistance.

Pearl gives Scott another life to avoid the risk of being alone.

Our session 2 ends with Scar alone on top of a mountain, here we find Scar Mumbo and Joel as the most powerful team in the server both in lives and enchanting table... Southlanders are really not doing well in this timeline.

Could you talk about Scar and his relationships?

I don't. Think I can I'll be honest. Scar is one of the guys I fully admit I do not comprehend. I am not a Scar guy I cannot tell you anything about Scar that I know isn't completely wrong. I can try but this is like. yeah read at your own risk.

Him being incomprehensible to me actually, in a way, adds to my overall read of 3L. I think Grian, like me, doesn't understand Scar or his intentions and that adds so much to 3L's overall themes of trust. Scar's deadliness is both constantly overestimated and underestimated by those around him -- e.g. Martyn and Ren being on high alert about everything he does vs Scott slotting him into being Grian's soon-to-be-dead-husband like he does with himself and Jimmy or Cleo and Bdubs. He's treated as either like. a complete monster or a bumbling fool, neither of which he actually is.

Grian, over time, does get more of a sense of who Scar is (definitely at least more than the other players) but even then it's underlined with a distinct acknowledgement he doesn't Get Scar.

And I think, in a way, Scar also doesn't get Scar. He does things very impulsively and adapts into whatever character others have assigned him, but unlike Etho who adapts entirely, he distorts it to suit himself -- such as, before the siege of Dogwarts, he IS a threat but he's a threat because he's serving as a distraction for Grian, not because of any danger emitting from himself alone. Grian expects him to betray him, and he does, but for Grian's sake instead of his own.

I'm a big fan of Grian/Scar being parallels to Scott/Pearl so a lot of the same things apply -- Scar is a glitch in the matrix for Grian's survivalist attitude towards the game. Grian can't comprehend Scar, so he abandons him, leading to Scar donning a cloak and being villainized by the whole server while Grian sits back. It's no wonder then why he's one of the only ppl in DL who isn't ever afraid of Pearl and even helps her get back at Scott (the self harm metaphors that apply to Scott/Pearl also apply to DL Scar/Grian for me).

I'll be honest I routinely forget that the cheating b plot in DL existed idk why it's just the one part that keeps slipping my mind, but I don't really know how to interpret Scar being upset there because he's never read to me as particularly in love with Grian or performatively "married" like Impdubs or the Box Boys. I think it's like. Just being abandoned once again but. shrugs. I do think it's fun comparing how Scar reacts to Grian actually cheating on him vs what Scott and Cleo do at the start of the season.

Despite really liking the Clockers POV of Limlife I really don't have much to say about Scar's role in that. It felt to me as if the "loose canon" label he came with pretty much dictated how Cleo and Bdubs treated him. I also read the whole family thing as just them being silly and roleplaying so that might play some part in it.

Secret Life's finale is peak cinema to me I just feel like it bookends Scar's character so well. Letting go of the attachment to Grian, winning on his lonesome and both teaming up and fighting against Pearl, his parallel. It almost feels more like Scar overcoming himself than anything else. Also him not dying at the end is hilarious and so very on brand (I have a short animatic in my head but idk if the moments passed to make it at this point).

Docm headcanon/rant

i think a lot of newer docm77 fans don't know how his skin got so complicated. Or how much lore it has because it is intricate.

Originally (as far a I know at least) the skin was a creeper man with a robotic eye and a lab coat. That's it. But then he upset a God (aka dinnerbone) that removed his right arm model. He replaced it with a robotic one quickly though. Around this time he killed three gods, dinnerbone cause of the arm thing I forgot how he killed Jeb but it was on accident then he accidentally killed Notch.

Then he joined hermitcraft a while after the Notch incident. Which I headcanon that instead of being invited he just shows up one day and nobody questioned him.

Season seven rolls around and is obsessed with goats and GOAT mentality (grind optimize automate thrive). Season eight hes breaking Minecraft again and apparently harnessing black magic with his shadow tech. (Headcanon doc doesn't believe in magic even when he sees it right in front of him or been when he does magic himself. It is simply yet to be explained science)

Season nine he is so obsessed with goat he now has goat horns (headcanon that he fucks with his DNA just cause he can. Also I like to think he also got a thicker skull with the goat DNA as well as the ability to just eat anything and developed a minor allergy to buttercup flowers)

Still season nine he's breaking the game and now worships the goatmother aka goat goddess and found an entire dead goat/creeper hybrid society in his perimeter. Then there's that twitter thing where his irl kid and him plate pretend as butterflies and suddenly his character has pink butterfly wings. (And antennae maybe?)

And that I just surface level canon things. Here are headcanons I didn't already say.

-his kid is a nonbinary creeper goat butterfly. And I love them. They usually stay with a friend off server because hermitcraft is not the safest place for a three year old but Doc will let them visit hermitcraft sometimes and goes off server frequently to see doccy.

-Docs hivemind is a bunch of smart people that he can see if they let him and he hears them constantly. Not only I the hivemind his smart friends but also various artists and musicians and cosplayers.

-Docs cam account is his robotic eye that he can control with his mind.

-creepers are covered in green fluffy fur an therefore Doc is fluffy. Also living with Ren in season eight gave him the habit of shaking himself dry after getting wet.

lee doesn't give 'outdoorsy' girl, but she would definitely try out camping and hiking for ren because lee's the type to go out of her way like that. so yeah, definitely ship lee and ren for sure

another compatible person for ren that i can see is derek? like omg that would so fucking cute to me! both of them are sportsy, derek is literally a golden retriever in the shape of a person. he's very considerate and he takes that into account if ren comes over to hang out with his family, knowing when she needs her space

but if derek is putting too much pressure on himself, ren is there to tell him just that. she doesn't say it unkindly though. she just wants her bf to not be his biggest critic. and they love doing any outdoor activity together. when they get their families together, its suarezs versus murrays and afterwards they go to a family restaurant and talk the night away

i think cove and baxter could also work if it's their step 4 selves. baxter is finally done running away from things and being more genuine and vulnerable and while cove is slow to warm up to people, he would see baxter is trying and slowly but surely their "we only hangout if our mutual friends invite us to the same space" turns into texting each of their own accord and eventually that becomes hanging out of their own accord

then the next thing you know, baxter is asking cove out on a date

in a scenario where they aren't close as step 1 folk though or qiu pushes derek away during their step 2 phase, derek is hurt but he still tries putting in the effort to rebuild that bridge, letting qiu know he's there regardless of what they're going through until finally... qiu reaches back

they had their ups and their downs but qiu appreciates derek not giving up on them and sticking with them through the hard times

by the time qiu is back to their normal rizzler self, derek's busy with sports and it is hard for them to meet up with each other but they stay in contact. but step 4 would be when they get together because derek let's it drop he had a crush on qiu when they were kids "haha definitely over it NOW though" (he is not)

qiu gains a crush on derek between steps 2 and 3 but never said anything because they kinda felt after being such a jerk to derek during a good chunk of high school, he doesn't deserve to pursue him but after hearing derek had a crush on him qiu decides they're gonna shoot their shot (happy ending ofc though)

I still stand by my opinion/headcanon that the issue with the "Why doesn't Akira and/or Haru give Yusuke money" thing is Yusuke would see it as a "hand-out" and refuse.

It can be an issue of something he internalized from Madarame and his stubbornness or he feels that doing so would be "taking advantage" of his friends, or even all of the above.

No absolutely. I mean I think again this is a consequence of writing Yusuke like a poor starving artist for gags and not actually examining it and his situation, so they don't just give him money because that would ruin the joke, and therefore I don't care too much but if you want an in-universe explanation there's what you said and then also I'd argue that for Ren that's specifically group phantom thief funds so he can't just give it to Yusuke and Yusuke would say to put the money towards better weapons and armor.

We also don't know how Haru's inheritance actually works she might just usually ask her dad to buy things and just not have cash on hand to give to a friend, she might have a trust fund, or an accountant or someone who handles her main financials but she'd have to explain it and so she can't just pull out a large chunk of money but can say "yeah I'm going out to lunch with a friend"

(This is why I like the headcanon of Yusuke moving in with Haru in college so he doesn't have to worry about rent)

It's one of those things that can be explained if you think about it, the issue is canon just doesn't really bother to because it again, does not care about the starving teenager beyond jokes about him eating weird stuff (which is kind of fucked up for a game about the failures of society and people who slip through the cracks but you know).

But like it's not something I'm pressed towards the characters about, you know?
