Chloe Simon at MMFA:
On President Donald Trump’s first day back in office, he announced an end to the CBP One app, which was expanded under former President Joe Biden’s administration and was the sole way for migrants to request an asylum-seeking appointment for legal entrance into the U.S. Right-wing media celebrated Trump for ending Biden’s policy, which they claimed let “illegal aliens schedule their illegal immigration,” and praised the incoming president for launching “a crackdown on illegal immigration.”
Trump shut down the CBP One app, which was the sole way for people to legally request asylum in the U.S. under the Biden administration
During his first day back in office on January 20, Trump signed a series of executive orders targeting immigration. He declared a national emergency at the southern border, authorizing military personnel to go there, ordered the reinstatement of his previous “Remain in Mexico” policy, and terminated the CBP One app. [CBS News, 1/21/25]
Since its launch in 2020, the CBP One app had been a tool for the Department of Homeland Security to identify and track asylum-seekers while allowing some to enter the U.S. at legal ports of entry. According to NBC News, the Biden administration implemented the CBP One app “as a way to curb people crossing the southwest border illegally to request asylum.” The American Immigration Council explained: “The app has become the only way that migrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border seeking asylum at a port of entry can preschedule appointments for processing and maintain guaranteed asylum eligibility. CBP One also became the only way that Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans seeking to secure travel authorization to obtain parole through special programs for those nationalities can submit their biometric information to CBP.” [NBC News, 1/20/25; American Immigration Council, 6/2/23]
Out of tens of millions of applications submitted through the app from January 2023 to December 2024, just 936,500 applicants were granted an appointment to request asylum. If asylum was granted, the approved person received a two-year permit that gave “eligibility to work.” [CBS News, 2/12/24; CBP, 1/14/25; NBC News, 1/20/25; PBS NewsHour, 1/20/25]
The CBP One app had been notably credited for decreasing illegal entry into the U.S. An August 2024 NBC News piece quoted Texas pastor Abraham Barberi that the app has “contributed to the decline” in illegal entries, suggesting that “now people think, ‘Well, I don’t have to go all the way to the border, I don’t have to cross the river illegally.’” Forbes also noted that immigration analysts have credited “the ability to use the CBP One app” in part with helping “reduce unlawful migration from Haiti,” adding, “If there is no way to enter legally and apply for asylum or obtain work, many people may choose to take their chances by crossing illegally.” According to PBS NewsHour, “Illegal border crossings by Cubans plunged under CBP One from a peak of nearly 35,000 in April 2022 to just 97 in September.” Additionally, PBS reported, “Migrant shelters along Mexico’s border with the U.S. are now occupied primarily by people seeking the online appointments.” [NBC News, 8/9/24; Forbes, 10/25/24; PBS NewsHour, 1/20/25]
The CBP One app served a purpose: a tool for asylum seekers to legally request asylum.
Donald Trump terminated it, and right-wing media celebrate it.

Mexico: New Global Migrant Hub Amid U.S. Deportations
In an unprecedented turn of events, Mexico has become the unexpected sanctuary for thousands of non-Mexican migrants who have been deported from the United States under President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration crackdown. This shift in policy has not only strained U.S.-Mexico relations but also positioned Mexico at the heart of a burgeoning global migration crisis. Here, we delve into the…

Elon Musk's (Nazi?) salute
youtube
Body language analysis
In this video, Dr G delves deep into the body language exhibited by Elon Musk during a post-inauguration speech for President Donald Trump on 20 January 2025. The video addresses the controversy surrounding Musk's gesture, which some interpreted as a Nazi salute. Dr G provides a comprehensive analysis, suggesting that the gesture was more likely an awkward expression rather than an intentional display of fascist symbolism. This perspective aligns with statements from organizations like the Anti-Defamation League, which characterized Musk's action as "an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm."
On 20 January 2025, Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States, marking his second, non-consecutive term. The ceremony, held indoors at the US Capitol due to inclement weather, featured Trump taking the oath of office administered by Chief Justice John Roberts. In his inaugural address, Trump pledged to bring about a "golden age of America," focusing on national security, economic revitalization, and unity, while criticizing the previous administration's policies. Following the inauguration, Trump signed several executive orders to rapidly implement his agenda. Key actions included declaring a national emergency at the southern border, reinstating the "Remain in Mexico" policy, resuming border wall construction, attempting to end birthright citizenship, withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement, promoting fossil fuels, rolling back protections for transgender individuals, ending federal diversity programs, and issuing pardons for over 1,500 individuals involved in the 6 January Capitol riot. These swift actions emphasize Trump's intent to reshape federal policies, although many are expected to face significant legal and public challenges.

Human Skull With Mosaic Designs
Mixteca-Puebla, Late Postclassic, 1300-1520 CE
This skull apparently belonged to a middle-aged adult, possibly a woman, between 30 and 40 years old at the time of death. The skull is broad and seems to have been subjected to intentional reshaping, but irregular flattening is perceptible only on the occipital bone. Reshaping caused the formation of a noticeable bun at the bregma. The lack of visible cut marks implies that no defleshing preceded its decoration. Diego de Landa provides a tantalizing account that may hint at the origin and function of some decorated skulls in Mesoamerica: In antiquity, they cut the heads of the Cocom lords when they died, and once boiled, they defleshed them, sawing half of the skull at the top and leaving intact the face with the mandible and teeth. To these half “skulls” they supplied what was missing in flesh with a certain resin, and they sculpted it very faithfully as the original face, and they kept (the decorated skulls) with the wooden statues (containing the cremated remains of ancestors), all of which they displayed in the domestic altars, together with their idols, in great reverence and subservience; and on every festive occasion they offer them food so that they will not be in need of anything.

Since the RWS and early TVS depict coaches as sentient, even the faceless ones, are the coaches, including Emily's coaches, sentient in this universe? If so, what are their names and personalities and what do they think of one another (for example, what do Emily's coaches think of Annie and Clarabelle?)?
Hello 👋
Yes, a majority of the coaches are sentient, non-faceless coaches are more common on the narrow gauges railways like with Skarloey, Rheneas, Sir Handel/Falcon, Andreas (a few being faceless like with the miniature gauge lines there’s still some with faces along with trucks but it’s not as common as other gauges)
As for Emily’s coaches, they are sentient and have their own personalities and names (I’m torn between Elodie, Elliot, and Elwyn or Morgan, Martha and Martin/Marvin for their names) they get along swell with Annie and Clarabel plus the other coaches though two of them, (I’m not sure which names cause I’m still thinking but it was the guy and the girl of the group) had a bit of negative attitude towards the other coaches, thinking of themselves as superior and were quite a terrible influence, I’ve based it off a fanfiction I’ve on DA where it was during Emily’s HiT era persona and it rubs off of them though I’m changing it a lot)
Over all they along quite splendidly like with Dexter the mobile school coach despite him being an oddball (sure it’s the classic case of them thinking he’s strange but have come around to accept it) I’ve even made some coaches oc for certain characters as well (names are still a WiP though pfft-)
Thank you for the ask 🤩😊

They put the little alien corpses in tiny coffins, for dramatic effect and respect. Which is by far the goofiest thing I've seen in a long time.
Then we find out the alien corpses are made out of a hodgepodge of chopped up human and animal remains.
This unboxing went so wrong so fast.

Grounded Diplomacy: Mexico Grounds U.S. Deportation Dreamliner
In an unexpected diplomatic hiccup, Mexico temporarily blocked a U.S. military plane from landing, complicating the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to deport immigrants to the country, as reported by NBC News. While two Air Force C-17s managed to transport 160 deportees towards Guatemala, the planned flight to Mexico was grounded. The reason behind Mexico’s decision remains unclear,…
