Bet Beat Keep [Ep 1]
Tumblr media
Pairing : Jungkook & Reader (mc) Genre : Smut / Romance / Thrilling / Dark Summary : Jeon Jungkook is a legendary boxer, currently the best around the city. Even the illegal cage fights he takes place become famous… And your rich boyfriend decides to bet on his next game. JungKook must win no matter what because you are on the line. Will Jungkook win for himself, or will another game begin? ⟪A/N: Do not copy or publish my work on other platforms without my permission. All Rights Reserved. Every and each like & reblog are highly appreciated.⟫
The vale in simple yet clean suit opened my door. I stepped out and glanced around. A slum with faded colors of old buildings. We were so out of place with our fancy clothes. I thought so until walking into the building. People like us were following a hallway. A buff guy checked Jae Hwan's invisible mark with a purple light and opened the door. A small laundromat was behind it. Wondering where this will lead I followed quietly. I reached another small door. Peeking inside I could see the cage with locks in the middle. Blood running cold, I stopped on my track. However before I could form any word, another man cut in. His suit and fedora carried no sign of reliance. "I thought big bets like these were not your thing Song. What happened?" His husky voice filled the thin hallway. Jae Hwan chuckled. I did not like it, because I knew it was not a good sign. "Well you got what you expected now. Stop using your words, use your zeros." The man returned the same sort of chuckle, sinisterly. "Still thinking small Song? How about the beauty you brought?" Jae Hwan arched his eyebrows arrogantly. "You are not laying a finger on her." I felt sick to my stomach. They were talking about me as if I was one of their belongings… As if I was an object. Not being able to stand their immature testosterone war, I walked in. Before I took my seat, I looked for the ladies room, hoping there has to be one. Somehow on my way back, I heard the familiar voice of a male. It was the same man who talked to Jae Hwan. His hands were on each side of the young guy before him. "Listen…. You either win this or I will shove this down your throat… Understand?"
I had no idea about cage fights, but one did not need to be a genius to see the problem. He was going to wear a knuckleduster to destroy his opponent. In this case, it was Jae Hwan's bet. I had to do something if I did not want to end up in the hands of another freak.
Tumblr media
Jungkook sat by the bench, listening to the deafening cheers of the crowd. Elites were present, so he had to give them what they wanted. They were thirsty for blood… Torture… Violence… Lives of miserable poor like him were meant for the entertainment. He took a deep breath, starting with his mantra. "Right, Left, Right, Left… Focus" Those whispers faded away when a woman suddenly pulled him back to the small room. The door was closed and Jungkook was stuck between the unfamiliar delicate body and the door frame. Eyes wide, he looked down to the unexpected guest.
I took a step back to create some space between me and the tall man. I finally looked up slowly and instantly regretted my decision. The only thing he had on was a cape along with shorts hanging on his hips. He had long and shaped legs and a muscular body. His chiseled chest and abs along with wide shoulders were literally perfect.
He had the face of an angel with captivating big eyes. Jungkook was also caught off guard. The first thing he noticed was the intoxicating perfume. The classy dress wrapped the beautiful woman’s curves and flowed perfectly. When your eyes met the only thing Jung Kook could think was that you were beautiful… From head to toe.
After a long minute of silence, the confusion kicked in. Closing my eyes I tried to put my thoughts together to explain. "Your… uhm… Your opponent is wearing a knuckleduster to the fight." After hearing those words, Jungkook even had more questions than before. He took a step to the delicate figure before him.
“And how do you know that?”
Since I did not have much time, I rushed the words. "It does not matter. I saw it. Its because of the bet." Jungkook raised one eyebrow questioningly. "How much is it?" I shook my head. "Money? I do not know. The real bet.." I stopped in the mid-sentence when my brain caught up with my mouth. However, Jung Kook's expectant gaze urged me to go on. "...is me." After I explained, I heard the footsteps outside the door. Jae Hwan's voice followed. "Find her!"

Overanalyzing Leo's Fears
Leo's fear is easy to pinpoint. He's terrified of abandonment. But why? And is that all there is to it? Let's look into that...
Leo's past is a bit complicated and tumultuous... following the events after Draxum lost him, Leo spent something around an entire year living alone in the backstreets of the Hidden City. And then he met Mikey. The two were only five and four years old, but even at that age Leo knew he couldn't raise a toddler all by himself. So he went to an unscrupulous orphanage for help. For several years, Mikey and Leo lived in that hovel filled with starving kids, each one fighting for attention and family. But Leo saw Mikey's needs and always put him first, stealing extra rations for him and giving him the clothes he needed.
Leo and Mikey were placed in a system similar to foster care, where families would adopt them and go through a sort of trial run to see if the kids were a good fit. Mikey always fit in pleasantly, everyone loved him! But as for Leo... he never seemed to get it right. A rambunctious child, defiant and stubborn, and with a head made for schemes? He was constantly sent back to the orphanage. (As was Mikey, who would rather be with his brother than strangers.) So, Leo was given a twisted view of what families were like: people who pretend to care for you, but will eventually discard you once they find what's wrong with you. And there is ALWAYS something wrong with you...
Leo was against Mikey's little found family from the start, because he never trusted the idea of a family to begin with! But as time passed by, he slowly started to grow closer with the two other turtles Mikey adored. However, something happened that caused Leo to lose his trust in them, and as a result, he did what so many had done with him before -- he left. And not just Donnie and Raph, Leo left Mikey.
While he was soon to be reunited with his brothers, Leon felt incredible guilt over what he'd done to Michelangelo. He couldn't believe that he'd done that to his baby brother, he didn't understand why he'd left Mikey for something he never did, an excuse so stupid as "he'd be better off without me"?! Why? (Raph would eventually pinpoint that Leo was subconsciously trying to test Mikey's love for him, to see if he would come back to him even if he left, to prove wrong what Leo feared all his life...)
It comes back to the start. Before the betrayal, before the families that sent him back, before the orphanage that hated him. It was Draxum who first instilled this fear in him. Because Leo was never actually lost from Draxum. Leo was discarded. Because he would not obey or conform, Draxum threw the child into the gutters as a way to teach him self-reliance and survival skills. (And even before that, what Leo doesn't remember but his subconscious still retains... is that Raph left him originally. In the character sheet for Raph, you'll find the last thing it says is Raph's earliest memory -- of him promising to find someone before running away. That was Leo. Raph promised to come back for him, to find him again and save him and the others... but after running away, he was discovered by Big Mama and soon lost all memory of the other experiments. Leo won't recall that moment, but the pain it caused stays with him.)
Leo expects everyone he loves to leave him. Because he believes -- no, it has been ingrained into him that he is worthless, and that the world is cruel.

Pairing: SDV!Harvey x OFC!Farmer (Black, she/her pronouns)
Word Count: 2,600
Chapter: 1 of ?
Summary: The good doctor meets his new neighbor.
Notes: this was so much fun to write! i did nawt mean for it to be this long y’all, my bad, it's fr looking like this is gonna be a series. this one can be read as a cute lil stand-alone too, tho! my original female character uses she/her pronouns and harvey uses he/him pronouns in this work. my ofc is Black like me <3. this installment is all fluff and sweet beginnings, but this series will likely have smut in later chapters, so be ye warned. canon-typical mentions of stormy weather, thunder, lightning, alcohol consumption (wine), hot beverage consumption (coffee), and grief (R.I.P. Grandpa). i don't think any other warnings apply, but let me know and i'll happily add whatever else is needed! any typos are my own. i do not consent for my work to be re-uploaded elsewhere. many thanks and hugs to my beautiful best friend who let me share the journey with her! enjoy :D

The good doctor wasn’t normally a morning person. His dedication to his work meant that he had developed a habit of waking early to open the clinic, but he never particularly relished being up with the sun. He much preferred his quiet evenings, after his patients had been soothed and sent home with their orders. When Maru locked the clinic door behind her and waved goodbye at him through the glass as she always did. The brisk smell of antiseptic followed him upstairs to his tidy little apartment. He could nurse a glass of Pinot with the radio tuned to something inoffensive, static crackling intermittently while the stars blinked into the night sky. Harvey knew his over-reliance on coffee would catch up to him one day, but until that day came he would drain the pot to make his mornings bearable.
And then you came to town. Rumor had it you had inherited your late grandfather’s farm just west of town. You immediately became a subject of local curiosity. Harvey didn’t like to gossip – who could trust a doctor that did? – but his neighbors seemed very interested in figuring you out. He supposed he couldn’t blame them. Pelican Town was a comfortable, easygoing kind of village, charming in its simplicity, but somewhat lacking in the way of excitement or novelty, as such places tend to be. He much preferred it to the over-stimulation of the city, and he supposed you must prefer it too, if you were willing to uproot your life to be here. As a doctor, he hoped the change of scenery would refresh and invigorate you, as it had for him. And as a neighbor, well… Harvey was no gossip, but he was certainly just as curious about a new face in town as anyone else.
Your paths first crossed by chance on a drizzly spring day, just before the annual Egg Festival. That morning had been a particularly bleary one, and he had just run out of coffee. He stopped by Pierre’s to pick up two fresh bags, one for the office and one for his apartment. Harvey was on his way back to the clinic and focusing mainly on keeping himself dry as he briskly walked the short distance to his glass-doored sanctuary. Most of his neighbors stayed indoors on gray, sullen days like this one, and today was no exception. But there you were, a brand new face in an otherwise perfectly familiar scene. You wore a deep blue raincoat with the hood drawn up over your head, and you seemed… not sad per se, but pensive, as you gazed around the otherwise unoccupied town square. He waved to you from across the square, then raised his hand to shield his glasses from the rain.
“Hello!” he called out, “you must be the new farmer!”
Your eyes met, and you waved back with a grin and replied “Hi, yeah, I am! Nice to meet you!” Your smile was brilliant and utterly serene, undimmed by the haze of light rain in the air. A clap of thunder rumbled overhead, and over your shoulder Harvey saw lightning flash in the distance, way out at sea.
“Won’t you come in?” he called out again. You shrugged cheerfully and crossed the square to follow him into the clinic, the both of you slightly damp but not much worse for the wear. Harvey smiled and nodded politely to you as you crossed the threshold into the clinic, his eyes keen and his soft brown curls sparkling with raindrops. You felt suddenly shy, standing so close to this kind stranger, the both of you dripping water onto the slightly scuffed entrance mat.
“I-I’m Sunny,” you said, extending a slightly damp hand to the man.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Farmer Sunny,” he replied, and he shook your hand warmly. “I’m Harvey, the local doctor.”
You chuckled and said, “Just Sunny is fine, doc. I’m sure we’ll be seeing each other around, anyway. Farming’s kind of a contact sport.” Harvey nodded knowingly and released your hand. You couldn’t help but notice the twinkle in his eye.
“I’m sure it is. I’ve treated quite a few farmers,” he joked lightly, closing the door behind you both. “Just Harvey, then, please. Welcome to Pelican Town, Sunny.” He smiled at you again, and your hands fumbled as you lowered the hood on your coat. “Would you like some coffee?” he asked as he walked to the tan door on the other side of the small reception room. “I was just about to brew a fresh pot. Or perhaps some tea? A warm drink would be ideal, given the weather.”
“Coffee’s great, thanks,” you replied with a grateful smile. Harvey nodded and gestured you over to one of the seats in the small waiting room, then pushed through the swinging door and disappeared into the back of the clinic.
There were no patients scheduled for the day, and Nurse Maru had the day off. The clinic was quiet. Outside, the storm showed no signs of stopping. You glanced around the room, rooted awkwardly to your spot on the entrance mat and trying to avoid getting too much water and mud onto Harvey’s very clean floors. You settled for removing your coat and hanging it on a hook by the door.
In his small office at the back of the clinic, Harvey placed the two bags of coffee onto the desk and shrugged off his green woolen cardigan. He draped it across the back of his office chair, repeating your name in his mind as he went. Sunny. Sunny, Sunny… Farmer Sunny. Just Sunny. It was an old habit of his, a trick he used to remember names. As he absentmindedly unbuttoned and rolled up his sleeves, it crossed his mind that the name seemed to suit you. He suddenly felt a slight blush blooming on his cheeks and shook the thought away, sending droplets of water flying. “Just make the coffee, Harvey,” he muttered to himself, and set his focus to the task.
A few minutes passed. Harvey left the coffee machine percolating gently in his office and stepped back through the hall door into the waiting area. You stood by the clinic door still, brushing the last of the water from your hair and clothes.
“Sunny?”
“Hm?” You glanced up at him, and your eyes locked with his just as another flash of lightning crackled across the sky outside, much closer than the last one. You didn’t flinch, but you did cautiously step closer to the edge of the mat and away from the glass door. Harvey’s eyes glanced from you to the square outside, then down to the entrance mat, and back up to you with gentle concern.
“Would you like to have a seat?” he asked gently, his eyes twinkling as though he understood your predicament. “The coffee is brewing now.” You shivered slightly, not from the cold, but from the way his eyes seemed to take in the sight of you. His demeanor radiated a sort of warmth and reassurance. You understood why your new neighbors had spoken so highly of him.
“Oh- thanks! Thank you doc- Harvey, but um…” you stuttered. “My boots are, uh. Well.” You glanced down at your brand new work boots, now muddy and grass-stained from your trek through Cindersap Forest earlier.
“Mm-hm, I see,” Harvey mused, glancing down at your boots. “Would you like to remove your shoes and leave them by the door?”
Your face perks up at the suggestion. “You sure you won’t mind the socks?”
“Not at all, as long as you’re comfortable.” Harvey smiled graciously and rubbed his hands together. “I’ll bring the coffee in just a moment. Would you like milk or sugar?”
“Both, please, thank you,” you respond with a grin, and kneel to unlace your heavy boots.
“Coming right up,” Harvey replied, and returned to his office. You watched the door swing shut behind him and wondered if he often spent his days in this quiet clinic alone. He seemed like the shy type, so you wouldn’t be surprised if he did. You could hear the storm pick up behind you now, and the thunder rolled overhead a bit more ominously than before. You stood and toed your boots off hesitantly, wincing a bit as they rubbed against the sore spots at the backs of your ankles. Grandpa always did warn you never to break in new boots in rainy weather. A bittersweet smile crossed your face at the warm memory. You stepped onto the shiny linoleum tile in your socks just as Harvey swung back through the doors, carrying a beverage tray in his hands and a clinic blanket over his shoulder. He placed the tray on the reception counter and removed the blanket from his shoulder. You stepped over to him in your socks.
“Would you like a blanket?” he offered, extending it to you. “I just pulled it from our warmer in the back.”
“Yoba, absolutely,” you replied, taking the blanket from him with grateful hands. You draped the blanket over your shoulders while Harvey set one of the mugs aside.
“I typically take my coffee black, but I do keep milk and sugar stocked for Maru’s sake.” He untwisted the cap on the small bottle of cream and began to pour some into the other mug for you. “Say when,” he said, his voice soft.
You counted to four, no, five, in your head while he dutifully poured the milk into your mug, then – “When.”
He fastened the lid back onto the small container and set it aside. While you picked a few yellow sweetener packets from the small bowl on the tray, Harvey took his own mug and stepped over to the large window. The clock behind the reception desk read 11:39am. Harvey blew on his mug gently, then sighed as the steam inevitably curled towards his face and fogged up his glasses. He removed them and rubbed his eyes for a moment before taking a sip of his brew. As you stirred your coffee and gathered the deliciously warm blanket tighter around yourself, you took your time to observe the doctor the way he had observed you earlier. He seemed lost in thought as he gazed out at the rain with a furrowed brow. Tall and neatly dressed, broad shoulders slightly bowed as he sipped his black coffee and gazed out at the world. He wore a simple brown leather watch on his wrist and looked to be a few years older than you. Hot, your mind betrayed you with the thought. You carefully chose a seat and ignored the fluttering in your chest.
“How are you enjoying Pelican Town so far?” Harvey asked after a moment. He glanced over to where you sat blushing furiously into your mug.
“Oh! I love it,” you grinned, and you meant it. “The place is even nicer than I remembered it. To be honest, I really hated my old life in the city.” You shrugged and stirred your coffee with a sigh. “I do miss my grandpa, though. But it feels like he’s still with me in spirit, ya know? Like he’s still puttering around the farm, somehow.”
Harvey nodded slowly. “I had the pleasure of meeting and treating your grandfather. He was a wonderful neighbor.” He sipped his coffee before continuing with a small chuckle. “And a stubborn patient.”
You laughed and replied, “Yeah, that sounds like him. Hardheadedness runs in the family, ya know.”
“Does it now?” he asked good-naturedly. “Hear, hear. Well, I do hope you enjoy settling in,” Harvey lifted his mug to you and ruffled his hair with his free hand. “And feel free to stop by if you’re ever feeling ill. I’m here in the clinic most days.”
“Mm. I’ll think about it,” you gave the good doctor a cheeky smirk and he shook his head in playful exasperation.
A brief, comfortable silence followed, each of you sipping your brews and listening to the rain. Suddenly, Harvey gasped and waved you over to the window. You tiptoed over, careful not to upset your blanket cocoon or your coffee. “The storm broke just enough for some sun to sneak in,” he murmured. “Look there, do you see?” He pointed to a patch of warm, almost golden sunlight, where a shimmering arc of color arched high over the trees.
“A rainbow!” you gasped, your face gleeful. And so it was – a single glorious rainbow, positively singing overhead where the rain had acquiesced to let in the light. You once again fell into silence together, your eyes on the sky and Harvey’s thoughtful eyes on you. Up the hill, the bell tower over the old community center rang out the time and snapped you out of your reverie. “Yoba, what time is it?” Harvey’s eyes fell to his own watch and he cleared his throat. If you hadn’t been checking the clock on the wall, you would have perhaps noticed that the good doctor looked a bit flustered.
“O-Oh! It seems to be noon already. I didn’t mean to keep you, Farmer Su- er, Sunny. I’m sure you’re busy settling in.” He tapped his lean, clever fingers against his mug and adjusted his tie with one hand. You waved his concern off gently, taking a long swig of the last of your coffee.
“No worries, doc!” you replied cheerily as you set your mug on the windowsill. “It’s been great hanging out with you. And thanks again for the coffee and the blanket. To be honest, I needed the pick-me-up.” You smiled gratefully at the good doctor and unwrapped the blanket from your shoulders to fold it in half, then half again. Harvey carefully grabbed your now-empty mug off the windowsill and offered his arm when you had finished folding. You laid the blanket over his arm with a murmured “thanks” before stepping over to where your boots sat waiting for you.
“Well, a good coffee is always better shared with a good neighbor,” Harvey answered, his voice warm and sincere.
“Hear, hear,” you agreed, smiling up at him from your place on the entrance mat. You tightened the laces on your boots and stood to grab your raincoat from the coat rack beside the door. “I’ll be seeing you then, neighbor.”
Harvey raised first his half-full mug, then your empty one, in a sort of awkward dual thumbs up. “You too!” he chirped as you threw your hood over your head. You swung the clinic door open, waved goodbye, and turned toward home. Harvey watched until your blue coat was out of sight. In the renewed stillness of his little clinic, he found himself wondering if you needed any simple medicines. Does she have a first aid kit? He frowned thoughtfully as he sipped his coffee. I’m sure she’ll be fine, Harvard. She’s a perfectly competent adult, he chastised himself.
Still. It couldn’t hurt to have one delivered, could it? Hm… The good doctor made a mental note to himself, and tucked the thought away neatly before turning his eyes to the skies again.
The rainbow kept you company on your short walk home. You found yourself wondering if the soil on your farm would be any good for growing coffee beans. “Plenty of time to find out, I guess,” you murmured aloud. If your big colorful companion heard you, it made no indication.
That night as Harvey rinsed his wine glass before bed, his mind wandered to his new neighbor. Sunny. Sunny, just Sunny.
Hm. She sure is.

Among the Leaves (NSFW)(Constance/Ebenezer fic)
Tumblr media
Fall is here. A themed drabble is in order.
Ebenezer takes his first ever 'holiday' off of work and goes to the English countryside with Constance. Without the prying eyes of coworkers and family, the two use the opportunity to catch up on quality time.
This is an explicit, 18+ story. Minors, I ask that you DO NOT INTERACT.
The story is under the cut. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
The sweltering London heat finally boiled over in early September. By the third week of the month, the leaves were golden and the air held a telltale crispness.
Gentle zephyrs that smelled of cinnamon and apples funneled down the country roads, each one gentle enough to send petticoats and top hats for those who weren’t cautious.
Constance adored windy weather. It allowed her unbound hair to whip about and blow freely, a sensation she found liberating and cleansing. Her dress, low-cut and made of spearmint linen, danced around her legs with every step, adding to the delight. Ebenezer, dressed in breeches and a simple white shirt, walked alongside her with a chipper gait. In the rolling hills outside the city limits, they were anonymous. Not a banker and socialite – not a scandal for retired folk to gossip about over tea. They were just another couple, stealing embraces and lingering glances, amidst the red and ember-colored trees.
“It’s gorgeous out here,” Constance said, looking around the golden fields that seemed to stretch in every direction.
“Yes, it’s a different world from the city,” Ebenezer agreed. He looked more handsome than usual, she thought, with his hair slightly windblown and his face lit with golden light. He had an almost boyish glow that she hadn’t seen around him yet, thanks to the city’s low ceilings and reliance on gas lamps.
As if reading her mind, he closed he eyes and basked in the autumnal calm. Tipping his head back, he inhaled slowly. “Serene. Quiet.”
Her cloak danced upon her heels with every spritely step, the tassels heavy enough to crunch the deadened leaves that her heels boots missed.
“It reminds me of home.” Her voice was almost ghostly, as if she was uneager to disturb the quiet that enveloped them.
“New York?”
“Yes,” she said,” Oh, don’t get me wrong, London is beautiful in the winter. But…New York in fall. Tarrytown. Hudson Valley. It’s something transcendental.”
“I believe you,” he said, taking moving his hand from her elbow to twine their fingers. “Washington Irving waxes beautiful stories of the area."
“Oh! You’ve read Irving?”
“I hadn’t before I met you,” he confided somewhat shyly, “But once we started courting, I wanted to know everyone I could about where you came from.”
The woman found herself grinning in pure excitement at the romantic confession. He’d kept that venture a secret from her.
He continued, albeit somewhat bashfully, “I found his works in a local bookshop. They are…quite popular this time of year, and it makes sense – the Dutch settlements. Fields of fragrant grain. The orchards. Throwing cinnamon chips atop crackling tavern fires. Lovers walking together on foggy nights amidst the gravestones. It’s all very autumnal and American …delightfully so.”
She flushed and nodded. “Yes. That last one is particularly dangerous, I must say.”
The two were a mere half-mile away from their temporary abode for the coming weekend. It was a small cabin with a hitching post for the horse and a small well out front. It was a comfortable lodge, and in the British countryside, finding their way back would not be difficult. Nonetheless, being out too late would be unwise, and both knew it.
“I can see why,” he agreed. “The stories and legends of the American wilderness are exciting enough for me, thank you very much. I’ll leave its true secrets to those knowledgeable enough to keep them. The prospect of getting spirited away by some ghostly Hessian soldier is, frankly, not an experience I’d like to entertain with you, dear. No offense.”
“Erudite and logical,” Constance teased. “None taken. I have no intention of getting spirited away on this very lovely afternoon. I quite like your company.”
He chuckled. “A very agreeable statement, my dear.”
Pausing momentarily, he snuck a quick look over his shoulder to peek at the road behind them. He squinted his icy eyes, as if trying to peer into the distance as much as possible. The moment Constance observed this behavior and tried to follow his gaze, he turned back her with a smirk. With the gentlest of shoves, he nudged her against an oak tree off the path until her back was flush with the bark.
There, he kissed her hard, tipping her head back so their mouths could meet fully. She reciprocated eagerly, hands roaming up his band, fingertips pressing into his back and through the flimsy material of his shirt.
She tugged the fabric tucked into his breeches free so she could slip her hands beneath the material and caress the skin of his bare back. Flanks of long, lean muscle met her eager fingertips. His towering, 6-foot-4 frame was impressive and weighty against her, but not in an unpleasantly smothering way.
As she did that, Ebenezer rolled his hips against hers, earning a thankful moan in return. He reached down to lift one of her shapely legs and wrap it around his waist. After it was secured, his hand skimmed up her skirts and past the edge of her stocking, exploring the tops of her thighs. Her skin quickly warmed under his skilled touch.
“Ebenezer…” she husked, eyes glassy as their kiss became more physical. Their bodies swayed and rutted together until even the flimsy barrier of their thin clothes was too much to bear.
He pulled back long enough to ask a breathless question, resting his forehead against hers. “D-Do you want to…”
Connie nodded eagerly, the heat in her lower belly too persistent to ignore. “We can use my cloak.”
Their hands tangled and they darted into the woods like excited teenagers. It took a few moments to find a clearing that was concealed by trees but was even enough for them to sprawl upon.
Ebenezer carefully unlaced the cloak from her freckled shoulders before laying it on the ground, smoothing it like one might do with a blanket before a picnic. Once he was satisfied, he turned around to see the pleasant sight of Constance already unfastening her dress.
When the fabric pooled around her ankles, she took great pleasure in drinking in the amorous expression on his face. The glow from before was this present, softening his features even further. With deliberate slowness, she slipped her hands over her ample breasts and down her corset, nails pulling and tugging the laces until she could remove it, her smalls and her stockings in one motion. The entire time, he never broke her gaze away from his.
When she rose again, Ebenezer’s gaze smoldered like twin diamonds.
“My gods,” he breathed, standing slowly and moving to her. He took her bare hips in his rough hands and pulled her close. “Look at you.”
She shuffled under his gaze, hands drifting behind her back.
“What about me?” she asked sweetly, tilting her head so her copper pooled over one shoulder.
“Bathed in this golden light…you’re like a sun goddess,” he breathed, his breath unsteady as his grip upon her tightened. “My goddess.”
The possessive lilt to his voice made her swoon, and she was suddenly very thankful for his arms being there to hold her.
“Well, Mr. Scrooge, don’t keep a goddess waiting,” she tried to tease, but her voice vacillated too much to sound as coquettish as she desired. They’d done this routine of teasing and flirting many times, yet her blood pounded with excitement as if it was their first time.
Judging by her lover’s matching smirk, he felt similar. “Mm. Eager, are we?”
“Well, it’s not very gentlemanly to leave me standing alone and nude without company,” she reasoned, crossing her hands over her breasts for playful emphasis.
This made his chest rumble, laughter as warm as summer thunder thumbling forth.
“You have a very unique idea of what a gentleman should do,” he said.
Despite his vague reply, he didn’t hesitate un unlacing the remainder of his shirt and tossing it aside. The action tousled his hair further, and as he pushed the silver-straked coif off his face, she was struck yet again by how damnably handsome he was. With his lean muscle from years of survival to his broad chest, covered in a spelt of salt-and-pepper hair, he was nothing short of a human Adonis. Then there was his face ... maker, his face. A strong Roman nose and sculpted cheekbones that could cut diamonds, nothing was as incredible to her was his icy-blue eyes. They glittered like mica in instances like this, when he stared at her as if she was the most precious being to him in the world.
It was her turn to ogle him as he unlaced his breeches and kicked them off him his socks and shoes.
He was all long-legged, toned glory. A trail of dark hair ran from his chest and down his belly, all the way to the reddened erection between his legs. His cock was already half-mast, heavy with arousal against his thigh, a clear pearl of liquid appearing at the top. She wetted her lips at the sight, suddenly desperate to take him into her mouth.
However, this occasion wasn’t the time for the lengthy foreplay that both could stretch on for hours. They had to be fast, less they be discovered by some unsuspecting travelers or merchants off the road. That scandal would follow them back to London easily.
With urgency that bordered on primal, Ebenezer closed the distance between them and wrapped two strong arms around her. She followed his lead, feeling him dip her into a kiss that forced her to cling onto him to prevent her from toppling over. The effect made their bellies and chests rub together. Her breasts, already heavy with desire, practically burned as his chair hair scrubbed her nipples.
Ebenezer lowered them both onto the cloak, with Constance laying supine beneath him.
They continued to kiss, moaning ang gasping as their hands roamed each other’s bodies. Relief flooded her when his hands finally lifted to her breasts and gave them a squeeze, helping to ebb some of the tension she’d felt buzzing in her nerves.
Arching her back into his hands, she was rewarded for her keening with the swipe of his deft tongue across the sensitive tips. She cried out from the pleasant combination of warmth and wetness. Her legs opened without a thought, already seeking his familiar girth to fill her and bring her to the edge of ecstasy.
After savoring the womanly musk of her breasts, he kissed a path down her stomach, hands moving down to cup her ass. With a hand on each cheek, he began to massage the flesh in circles, easing her body open further and further.
“E-Ebenezer, please, just…”
“Not yet,” he replied, kissing her belly button. Gods, she could feel his breath against her quim, already hot and eager and dripping for him.
She bit back a moan of frustration, for she knew that the delay of pleasure was all for a good reason.
Ebenezer was many things, but among the long list, he wasn’t a selfish lover. When it came to making sure his woman was satisfied, he wanted to know when he finally slid into her that she was wet and ready for him. Friction would be smooth, and his approach would be slow until he found that perfect spot inside her that milked the prettiest trembles and screams. Then, and only then, would he ferociously pick up the pace and drive into her, making sure to tilt his hips at the angle that kept her screaming for more.
Even when they’d first laid together, knowing she wasn’t a virgin, he’d treated her as such. He carried her to bed, taken her clothes off, kissed her slowly, savored the taste of her clit against his tongue … all of it to make sure that she was trembling and aching for him by the time they could finally come together in a moment of glory.
“I’m ready,” Constance said, hips lifting off the cloak and swaying. “Oh, please…love, please…”
Ebenezer was weak to her pleading, especially when she called him pet names.
“F—uck, do you have any idea how you look when we're together like this?” he whispered, moving his lips back up her sternum so he could whisper in her ear. “Once we get back to the cabin, I’m throwing you on that bed and making love to you until you can’t walk.”
She moaned loudly, her entire head tipping back at the sound of his promise. “Oh, please…yes!”
“Another beautiful sound,” he said, lips caressing her forehead as he placed a kiss right between her brows. ‘You, begging for me. It’s so hard to not give you what you want…”
“Please, Ebenezer!” she practically wept. Lifting a leg, she shakily wrapped it around his waist to bring his hips down. Feeling his tip right of her entrance, pressing inside slightly, made both release a collective sigh of yearning.
“A-Are you certain?” he stuttered.
She nodded. “Yes.”
With a roll of the hips, he slid inside, and … it was perfection. His cock filled her so perfectly. He wasn’t too big or too small. He knew when to speed up his pace, and when to slow down and keep her teetering on the edge. Best of all, he knew her body and knew what made her scream.
When he bucked his hips and arced right into the spongy G-spot on the roof of her sheath, her entire body went as taut as if she’d been seared by electrocution.
“Y-Yes, right there!” she begged. Her other leg shot up to cradle his body, his narrow hips fitting perfectly between her trembling thighs.
Platitudes fell from her lips as he continued his steady rhythm. With one hand supporting her lower back so he didn’t drive her too hard into the ground, he rutted into her with the same desire he felt the first time they’d slept together.
The entire time, he whispered comments into her ear: about her beauty, about how good she felt, about how lucky he was to share these moments with her. For a man who fancied numbers more than words, he was an incredible poet.
When she finally came crashed down from her high a minute later, her spine kinked and she dug her nails into his skin. He growled in pleasure, a smirk never leaving his visage as he watched her beautiful features spasm in bliss.
“There we go,” he commended, hands combing through her coppery strands. “That’s a good girl. Just like that.”
Tears in her eyes from the power of her orgasm, she let out one last cry as she felt her body close around his cock like a hot fist.
As he went to pull out and finish outside of her, she kept her legs locked around his waist, keeping him in place.
“S-Stay inside…” she begged, hands flying to squeeze his shoulders. “Finish in me.”
His eyes softened instantly, then glazed with the telltale signs of happiness. “M-My Constance, a-are you…are you sure?”
Again, she nodded. “I’ve never been more certain.”
This certainly of her love for him and confidence in him as a potential father to her children…it was too much. His brow furrowed as a surge of pleasure shot through him, and he shifted his angle to thrust back inside her.
Constance let Ebenezer move her body as needed to find the perfect angle that would apply to best pressure to his cock. Once he found it, she saw his eyes practically roll back.
“I-I love you…” he stuttered, already breathless after just two thrusts. On the third, he laughed and practically collapsed. “Connie, I love you so, so much.”
She nodded, her heart swelling with each beautiful declaration. “I love you, Ebenezer…my Ebenezer…”
The last of his restraint snapped, and with a growl, he shuddered and filled her with a hefty load of his seed. He frantically pumped his cock as deep as he could, filling her until droplets seeped onto the cloak below, before he let out an exhausted sigh.
He slumped beside her, a sheen of sweat covering his chest and forehead. Wiping the moisture away, he rallied himself for only a moment before he rolled atop her and kissed her again.
“You’re my radiance, my map to grace…” he said, rambling breathlessly. “I-I…could not be without you. I’m sure of that.”
It was a somber declaration, and it made her ribs go soft.
“I can’t be without you, either,” she said. “I’ll make sure we’re never apart. I never want to be taken from you.”
“I would perish before allowing that,” he whispered. Again, he reached down and twined their fingers.
Constance smiled and rolled into his embrace. She wrapped the cloak around them as a partial blanket for the moment.
“Well, perhaps we should hurry back then,” she teased. “We don’t want the ghosts to come out, right?”
He flattened his chest so she could use it as a pillow, which she greatly appreciated. As she nestled herself into place with a smile, he rolled his eyes.
“If there were any specters lurking in the trees, I’m quite certain we scared them off,” he said. Then, a beat later, he added, “Or … I hope.”
Constance giggled. “I hear no rattling chains.”
“Don't tease.”
She giggled and glanced up at him.
“I won’t let the ghosts take you away,” she promised. “After all …”
A hand drifted to her belly.
“Who knows what the future has in store?”
The two decided to stay in each other’s arms as they drank in the sunset in each other’s arms. With each passing minute, Scrooge dropped another tender kiss upon her, never wanting to let her go.
Thankfully, as long as the world around them stayed as calm and tranquil as this…he would never have to.

A/N: Sorry this took a while to get posted. Work has been kicking my entire ass lately.
⊱ —————— ❈  —————— ⊰
Eventually, I stopped feeling sorry for myself long enough to splint my wrist. It was fractured but not displaced, and with Fae healing, it would only be a week or two before it was completely healed. The injury still felt like a defeat, though, and I couldn’t help but launch into a spiral of regret. My friends back home had questioned my decision to uproot myself, but I’d dismissed their worry, determined to prove I could make it on my own. Now, it seemed their concerns were not as unfounded as I thought.
After my parents died, I felt utterly lost. The deep loneliness of those early days made it nigh impossible to go on. Afterward, I became determined to rely only on the one person who couldn’t be taken away from me: myself. Leaving behind my old life had felt like the ultimate test of self-reliance, a chance to prove my independence once and for all. Now, as I lay in bed with a broken wrist and throbbing head, I felt like I had all but failed that test.
It took me a while to fall asleep that night, and when I woke up the next morning, the sun was high in the sky already. I rose slowly, my muscles aching from my tumble down the stairs. When I looked in the mirror, I cringed, already dreading having to explain myself to Madja when I returned to work in two days' time. My left eye was blackened and swollen shut, and my lip was split from when my face caught my fall. In combination with my tear-streaked cheeks and unkempt hair, I looked an absolute mess. I hoped that by the time I had to emerge again, I’d be able to hide the worst of the bruising. Originally, I had planned to spend the day about town, stocking my pantry and buying other household basics. Between my haggard appearance and aching body, though, I elected to spend the day in bed. I knew that wallowing would do little to serve me, but the heaviness of my heart seemed like too much to carry for the time being.
Sometime in the afternoon, I was pulled from my snoozing by a heavy knock at the door. I cringed, remembering the heap of broken furniture I had left at the base of the stairs. It would be my luck that one of the neighbors took issue with it. Not wanting to make enemies in the neighborhood already, I rushed to the door, secretly hoping a few sincere apologies and my pitiful appearance might smooth any feathers the mess had ruffled. But to my surprise, instead of being greeted by an angry stranger, I was met with the spymaster of the Night Court.
Azriel.
⊱ —————— ❈  —————— ⊰
“We need your help with Y/N,” Nesta announced as soon as she arrived in Azriel’s office. The spymaster let out a long sigh, putting his papers to the side and giving his sister-in-law a weary look.
“I thought I already said I wasn’t going to spy on your mate.”
“We’re not asking to spy on her,” Nesta huffed, “we’re asking you to find her.”
Azriel’s eyebrows shot up and he straightened, suddenly engaged in the conversation. “You lost her already?”
“We were working,” Nesta hissed. “She moved out of the inn and she didn’t leave an address. We need to find her soon because that useless innkeep didn’t even bother to give her our first message.” The Valkyrie’s face reddened, her notorious temper flaring once more.
“There weren’t any messages left here for us, were there?” Cassian added hopefully, placing a comforting hand on the small of Nesta’s back.
“No, noth—,” Azriel began to answer, then froze. “Dammit.”
“What? What is it?”
Azriel rubbed his temples and groaned. “Yesterday the guards at the stairs mentioned someone trying to leave a message for you. They said it was probably just some well-wisher but—.”
“What was the message?” Nesta asked, bracing her hands on his desk. “What did she say?”
“They didn’t take a message,” Azriel replied, cringing. “They sent her away.”
“They what?” Cassian growled, his siphons flaring.
“They sent… our mate… away,” Nesta hissed. She had a wild look in her eyes that Azriel knew well.
“They didn’t know who she was,” he assured her, but the notion did little to calm the seething pair. “Look, I’ll find her for you. It won’t take long. Just give me an hour.” Nesta nodded stiffly, her posture rigid, and watched Azriel rush off to fulfill his promise.
“I hope—,” Cassian started to speak, but cut himself off.
“What?” Nesta prompted.
“I hope she doesn’t think they sent her away on our orders,” he finished, rubbing the back of his neck. Nesta’s heart dropped at the thought. Less than a week in and they’d already messed things up with their mate.
“We’ll make it up to her, right?” she asked, deep in thought.
“Right.”
⊱ —————— ❈  —————— ⊰
Azriel worked quickly, sending out shadows to widen his search. True to his word, it wasn’t long before he’d tracked her to the northern edge of Velaris. The apartment she had chosen was run down and seedy, much like Nesta’s first home in the city. He had no doubt she and Cassian would take issue with the location, and he made a note to remind them to reign in their overbearing side. He decided to confirm her location before returning to the pair and made his way up the cracked exterior stairs, past a heap of broken furniture and discarded trash. It was quiet inside her apartment, and he couldn’t distinguish her heartbeat from the other residents, so he sent his shadows underneath the door to verify she was home.
‘She’s inside,’ they whispered. ‘She sleeps.’ He called them back, turning to leave, but froze when they added another detail. ‘She’s injured.’ He drew Truth Teller on instinct, even though his shadows would have told him if she wasn’t alone. For a moment, he debated summoning Cassian and Nesta, but he thought better of it. If he didn’t give any details besides what his shadows had provided, he was liable to send the two into a panic, which was unlikely to end well for anyone. Especially him.
He pounded on the door and was relieved when he heard movement inside. She took a while to reach it, and when she finally pulled it open, his heart sank. One of her eyes was blackened and swollen almost all the way closed, and her lip was split like she had been punched. Her wrist was wrapped expertly, splinted to brace a broken bone there. “What happened?” he asked urgently, stepping past her to search the small apartment. The space was little more than an empty room, with a tiny kitchenette and mattress on the floor. Nesta and Cassian would not be pleased with it, indeed.
“I… fell,” she stammered, looking bewildered at his arrival.
“Fell from where? Have you seen a healer?” he asked, turning back to assess her. She seemed otherwise unharmed if a bit out of sorts.
“Down the stairs. And I am a healer,” she reminded him. “What are you— can I help you?”
He realized then that he didn’t have any explanation for his appearance at her doorstep, and decided he would go with the truth. “Cassian and Nesta just got back to the city. They asked for my help in finding you.”
“They… wanted to find me?” she seemed surprised and Azriel cringed internally. They certainly had come explaining to do.
“They did,” he replied. “I’ll let them know where to find you. But… do you need anything? Are you sure you don’t need a healer?” She shook her head, blinking slowly, and he made his way to the door.
“Wait! she called after him. “Can you just, tell them I’ll meet them in a few days… when this isn’t so bad?”
“As much as I’d like to… I don’t think I’m going to be able to keep them away,” he said apologetically. “They’re… worried.”
“Okay…” she seemed resigned. “Can you take me to them, then? I don’t want… I don’t want them to see…” She blushed scarlet and Azriel felt a pang of empathy. He knew what it was to be pitied and he could understand her desire to avoid it.
“I can take you to the House of Wind,” he agreed.
“Okay, just give me a moment and I’ll be right out,” she glanced pointedly toward the open door and he stepped out. When she reappeared a few moments later, she had changed into a fresh set of clothes and let her hair down. It did little to hide the bruising, but he didn’t point it out.
The flight to the House was short, and Azriel could hear approaching footsteps as soon as they landed. He set Y/N down quickly, stepping away to create some distance, and prepared to play referee if need be. Nesta arrived first, breaking into a grin upon spotting Y/N’s small frame half-hidden behind Azriel’s wings. But her face fell when her mate came fully into view and she rushed forward, all but shoving Azriel out of the way with Cassian hot on her heels.
“Who did this to you?” It was Cassian who spoke first, his tone full of unbridled rage. His siphons were shining brightly, casting a red glow about the foyer. Nesta was wide-eyed as she reached out to touch her mate's shoulder, looking her up and down several times. Only Azriel noticed how Y/N shrank slightly under the sudden attention.
“I fell down some stairs,” she explained, cradling her wrist to her chest. Cassian’s hand left his sword, but he remained tense, his wings flared wide.
“Are you sure?” Nesta coaxed, her stare fixed on her mate’s swollen eye. The hand not resting on her shoulder was curled into a white knuckle fist.
“What do you mean?” Y/N asked innocently.
“If someone did this, you don’t have to protect them,” Cassian explained, stepping closer to tower over both his mates.
“No one did this,” Y/N explained with a nervous chuckle. “Well, except the stairwell and myself. I lost my grip when I was moving in my bedframe.”
“By yourself?” Nesta demanded, sounding vaguely admonishing. “Why didn’t you have help?”
Y/N’s expression darkened and she pulled away slightly, causing Nesta to drop her grip on her shoulder. “I didn’t have anyone to help me. I tried to drop a message here and got threatened with jail time, so…” She trailed off, shifting slightly from foot to foot. Azriel got the impression that his brother’s mate was of the nonconfrontational sort, and this was as close to an accusation as they were likely to get. Sensing the tension in the air, he took his leave, disappearing into the shadows.
Meanwhile, Nesta’s eyes burned with wrath and she recoiled as if she’d been slapped, “They what?”
“They said you weren’t taking audiences, thought I was lying when I said I knew you,” she mumbled, looking at her feet. Cassian blew out a heavy sigh, rubbing a hand down his face.
“They’ll be dealt with,” he said decisively, as much to assure Y/N as himself and his mate. He pitied the guards who had made such a grave error.
“I’m sorry,” Nesta said, her voice soft. It seemed to catch Y/N off guard and she finally looked up from the floor. “For everything. It was all a misunderstanding and…”
“Let’s take a seat,” Cassian suggested, gesturing to the adjacent sitting room. “I’ll get you some ice.” He stepped into the other room to make the request of the House, figuring now was not the time to tell her about its enchantment. When he returned, Y/N was seated next to Nesta on the sofa, her wrist still cradled to her chest. Cassian cringed at the sight of his mate in pain. “We should get Madja.”
She shook her head furiously, then winced. “We don’t need to bother her. I’m a healer too, remember.”
“Should you be treating yourself?” Nesta asked skeptically.
“I splinted the wrist just fine. It’s not a bad break. The rest will heal in time,” she explained.
“So it is broken?” Cassian asked, taking a seat on her other side. She accepted the ice gratefully and pressed it against her swollen eye.
“Not badly,” she said again, dismissing their concerns. An awkward silence settled over the three before Nesta finally spoke.
“We left a note for you at the inn,” she explained. “We had to leave for the Illyrian camps urgently but we didn’t want you to think we were ignoring you.”
“Oh,” said Y/N, not meeting their eyes.
“But the innkeep never gave it to you,” Cassian grumbled. “And then those Cauldron damned guards—”
“It wasn’t our intention,” Nesta cut him off, “to just disappear.”
“So you didn’t change your mind… about getting to know me?” Y/N asked, sounding small.
“No!” The two replied in unison, their tones emphatic.
“No, we were concerned, when we didn’t know where to find you. We do want to know you,” said Cassian. Nesta nodded in confirmation, resisting the urge to take Y/N's uninjured hand in hers. “If you’ll still have us.”
“Of course,” Y/N replied quickly. “I’m glad it’s not as I thought it was.” Nesta and Cassian shared a smile, their relief palpable. Just then, Y/N's stomach growled and she blushed, murmuring an apology.
“When’s the last time you ate?” Cassian asked. Nesta would have teased him for his mother-henning if it weren’t for her own protective instincts in overdrive.
“Last night,” Y/N shrugged. “I should probably go get something to eat—.” Before she could finish, there was a gentle thud as three plates appeared on the coffee table before them. Y/N yelped in surprise, jumping at the sudden appearance.
“What in the Mother’s name was that?” she asked.
“This House has certain… abilities. And a mind of its own,” Nesta explained. “I think it wants you to have dinner here.”
“And so do we,” Cassian added.
“The House is… magical?” she asked, dumbfounded. Nesta nodded, a glint of amusement in her eyes, and reached out to pass Y/N a plate. They sat on the couch to eat, falling back into familiar, comfortable conversation. Y/N asked them about their time in the mountains, listening intently as they explained the nature of their trip. The conversation led them to talk more about their jobs, Cassian’s role as a general, and Nesta’s work training the Valkyries. When they were done eating, both Nesta and Cassian noticed how Y/N eyes were beginning to droop. The House noticed as well, and a blanket popped into existence on Y/N lap, causing her to jump.
“We should get you home,” Cassian said, holding back laughter. “Are you sure we shouldn’t have Madja look you over?”
“No, there’s really no need.”
“Well then, how about that flight we talked about?”
⊱ —————— ❈  —————— ⊰
Flying with Cassian was incredible, but flying with Cassian and Nesta was practically euphoric. I couldn’t help but shreik as Cassian dove through the air, sharing a look with Nesta, who was grinning as the gripped onto him. True to his word, he carried the two of us with ease, never once loosening his grip on my waist. I directed them to the northern part of the city, trying my best to be vague about which building was mine. It wasn’t that I was ashamed, per say, but in contrast to their lavish, enchanted home, my hole in the wall felt especially humble. We landed on the street in front of my building, but it was immediately clear that both Cassian and Nesta were hellbent on walking me all the way to my door.
I didn’t look at them as I led them up the stairs, afraid of what I might see in their expressions. When we reached my door, I turned and shrugged, feigning nonchalance. Nesta kept glancing down at the stairs, her eyes drifting to the discarded, broken headboard, while Cassian was intently examining my front door. “This isn’t secure,” he commented, tugging on the old, rusted hinges. “I can fix it. Tomorrow.”
“You don’t have to do tha—”
“Is that what you were trying to move?” Nesta interrupted, gesturing at the splintered wood below. I nodded and she peered down at it thoughtfully. I opened my door and Cassian looked behind me, examining the space.
“Can we come by tomorrow? If you’re up to it, of course?” he asked, looking back at me. There was something so innocent about the way he asked, a hopeful look to him so at odds with his reputation is was comical.
“Sure,” I replied, unable to decline such a genuine request. The two shared a meaningful look that I couldn’t quite interpret, then smiled.
“We’ll see you in the morning, Y/N,” said Nesta. “Get some rest.”

Note
“Tactically there were only two ways for infantry to beat cavalry in an open field battle: firepower and mass. Firepower could be provided by swarms of missiles. Mass could be provided by a tightly packed phalanx of men. Such tactics were long-established; the Romans used missile troops such as slingers, and the core infantry learned to deal with swarming enemy cavalrymen by forming a hollow square fenced with a solid hedge of iron pila (large javelins). Alexander the Great combined both methods in his clashes with the Asiatic horseman of Persia and India, screening his central infantry phalanx with slingers, archers and javelin-men, before unleashing his cavalry against the enemy. Both mass and firepower could be aided by a good tactical position, such as on a hill or on rough terrain, where enemy cavalry would have trouble manoeuvring.”
×
“Archers, for example, were essential in holding the fast-moving Muslim cavalry at bay—suppressing their firepower, and allowing the armoured knights to mount successful counter-attacks. Pikemen were important in screening the flanks.”
×
“Against Saladin's light cavalry at Jaffa (c. 1192) during the Crusades, Richard of England drew up a line of spearmen, kneeling on the ground with spear planted in front, forming an effectual 'hedge of steel' against the charging enemy horsemen. Behind the spear wall, crossbowmen stood ready, with assistants helping to reload. The Muslim armies attacked but the combined firepower of the archers and the steadiness of the wall of spears held.”
Some interesting little morsels I found regarding the role of infantry in battle!
I dread the day I have to do enough research to write a convincing full-scale battle set in the world of ArSen (though there's a good chance that maybe I will never need to). The Parsian army definitely have a reliance on their cavalry, specifically their cavalry charge on open ground but also tactics like feigned retreat or swift raids, where it's hard to envision the infantry playing a large role.
For bigger battles where they are fielding infantry units as well, perhaps they're used to give an initial volley of arrows (firepower, as mentioned above). I'm not sure where the infantry were at Atropatene but I assume behind the cavalry units, with the plan that they would move up to join them once the two sides had met? I did try to check the novels for details but aside from mentioning that the infantry were there, Tanaka didn't elaborate on their involvement. They're obviously separate from the Marzbans and their 10,000 cavalrymen, and I'd love to know how the two work together in terms of tactics and command etc.
There are situations where I could see infantry being better suited. Fortresses probably had a decent amount of infantry stationed there, especially those like Peshawar which were defending a border or access point. To take Peshawar Fortress as an example, there are 20,000 cavalry and 60,000 infantry. And inside Ecbatana before it fell there were 20,000 cavalry and 45,000 infantry (and given that the infantry were slaves you can imagine how fast things turned bad when the slaves revolted). The cavalry are good for sallying out in a charge, but the infantry must be invaluable to help hold a fortress or walled city when it comes under siege.
The Parsian forces that protect the border with Misr are also primarily infantry, and there's good reason for that. Unlike the Kaveri River at the eastern border, the Didjireh River (the Tigris) is shallow and relatively easy to cross; therefore the defensive measures include a wall of fortifications along the banks, which are probably better defended by infantry as a cavalry charge would not be that practical.
Other situations in which I could see the infantry being utilised are when that famed Parsian cavalry charge just isn't possible because of the terrain, or because they are using that terrain to trap the enemy (archers atop the cliffs of a narrow valley, for example). But I really know very little on this subject as a whole, so these are just my thoughts.
I think, because of the heavy reliance on cavalry, it's unlikely that the Parsian infantry used tactics as sophisticated as the Roman infantry squares, though I'm sure they would form up with shields and spears as a wall if they did happen to find themselves facing a cavalry charge from an enemy. And the info above about defending the flanks from attack with spears seems like it could well apply.
It's probably worth reading into Persian infantry specifically. There's some info on historical tactics in general here, and also the sparabara, with the caveat that none of this is going to match up perfectly to the composition of the fictional Parsian army. My partner suggested also looking into the Mamluks in terms of slave soldiers but again it's not going to be directly comparable.

Introducing Thalin Beveran, Miralith’s brother and the secondary lead of my story
Tumblr media
Thalin is an elf artificer who runs a tinkering shop, he likes to invent gadgets and machines, he is very passionate about engineering and could ramble on and on about the subject. He also has a great interest in cartography, he loves to draw and study maps and has quite a collection of various maps from around the world.
Personality wise, Thalin is witty and clever, he is great at planning things out in his head, though he does get distressed when things don't go to plan, but he can usually still find a way to make things work out in the end. He likes to crack jokes and always speaks his mind, though a lot of the time he doesn’t read the room and can often lead to his remarks being inappropriately timed. He cares a lot for Miralith and his friends, though he can often have a hard time showing it. He's also very creative, and can think of outside-the-box solutions to problems.
Backstory:
Thalin hadn't been born yet when he and miralith's father left, so he only had his mother and miralith looking after him growing up. He had an over-reliance on Miralith as a kid and even up to their adult years, until Miralith was drafted to fight in the war. Now that he was suddenly without his sister, he was lost on what to do in life, and that led him to living on the streets as a thief, fighting to survive
On the streets, he met a fellow thief named Serryn, a half-mermaid woman who was extremely cunning. They decided to team up, with her cunning mind and brilliant planning skills and his creativity and dexterity, they became a great power couple, they were very successful thieves and had gone on many heists with the city watchmen being none the wiser
one day however, they were in a heist and things went awry. Thalin had the stolen treasure when he and Serryn were spotted by law enforcement, so they had to make a break for it and run away, but Serryn got caught, and rather than helping her, Thalin ran away with the treasure out of cowardice, leaving her to fend for herself.
after the war, Miralith found out Thalin had become a lowly criminal and was ashamed, disappointed, and furious with him, and she refused to interact with him until he got his life back together, which was finally gave thalin the motivation to change for the better. He opened a tinkering shop, making things out of some of his stolen goods and selling them, but then reinvesting that money he made into buying more materials rather than continuing to steal, and after a few years he and miralith finally reconnected and became close again

Queen Rania of Jordan celebrates her 53rd birthday on 31 August 2023
The Royal Court has released two new portraits of Queen Rania for the happy occasion.
The past year featured a number of joyous occasions for the Hashemites: the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein, the wedding of Princess Iman, the university graduation of Princess Salma, and the high school graduation of Prince Hashem.
In the days and weeks preceding their children’s weddings, Their Majesties were eager to share their happiness with their country’s people, involving the Jordanian public in the various celebrations marking the marriages of their first-born son and eldest daughter.
Her Majesty hosted a Henna party for Princess Iman, as well as a dinner party held in honor of the Crown Prince’s wife, Princess Rajwa, where the Queen and members of the royal family were joined by women from across Jordan’s 12 governorates to celebrate the two happy occasions. Both events spotlighted the richness of Jordanian culture and included several folkloric musical and dance performances by local female artists.
Throughout the year, Queen Rania continued to follow up on issues of importance to the Jordanian public by carrying out a number of visits to charitable associations, home-based businesses, startups, and other organizations across the country’s cities, villages, and rural areas.
A celebrated advocate for women and youth, Her Majesty’s local engagements included meetings with women artisans and young entrepreneurs, as well as visits to a number of women-led initiatives and associations supporting women’s financial empowerment.
During the holy month of Ramadan last March, for the second consecutive year, the Queen organized a mission to Umrah – the lesser Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca – for 500 women from across Jordan, a group of whom the Queen joined to perform the sacred pilgrimage herself. Earlier, in December 2022, Her Majesty took part in the lighting of the Fuheis Christmas tree among members of Jordan’s Christian minority.
Alongside her work within Jordan, over the course of the year, Queen Rania participated in several distinguished global gatherings, and accompanied His Majesty on a number of regional and international working visits.
At the invitation of the Her Majesty Queen Camilla of the United Kingdom, Queen Rania attended a reception at Buckingham Palace in London aiming to raise awareness of violence against women and girls. She also met with U.S. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden at the White House while joining His Majesty and Crown Prince Al Hussein on a visit to Washington, D.C.
While in D.C., the Queen delivered the keynote speech at the 2023 National Prayer Breakfast (NPB) Gathering’s International Luncheon on Capitol Hill, where she affirmed that religion is not “a shelter for hiding,” but “a launch pad for living.” She also posited that, in the face of widespread polarization, the act of prayer can lead us towards a better, more nuanced path that she described as “the third way.”
“This third way is not the average of extremes, but rises above the binary, elevating us to higher ground that can become common ground as well,” she said. “Our win doesn’t need to be someone else’s loss. And being right doesn’t mean that the other side is wrong — only that we need other points of view to see a multi-dimensional picture.”
The Queen also spoke at the 2023 Web Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, where she underscored the potential pitfalls of humanity’s increased reliance on technology. “I am concerned that we’re undervaluing the most precious currency of all – our time,” Her Majesty said. “I am concerned that, even as virtual reality improves by the day, we’re neglecting the needs of our actual reality.”
In her capacity as a member of the Earthshot Prize Council, the Queen delivered remarks at the first-ever Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit, hosted in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. In her speech, Her Majesty called for mobilizing collective action and ingenuity to repair the planet, cautioning against claiming that “climate change is somebody else’s problem,” or leaving it for future generations to address.
This year, Queen Rania continued to use her global platform to advocate on behalf of refugees in Jordan and beyond. At the Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York, Her Majesty explained that a refugee crisis is “not just a short-term humanitarian crisis,” but rather a “crisis of human development” that requires long-term solutions focusing on growth, building resilience, sustainability, and job creation.
Additionally, the Queen repeatedly underscored disparities in the treatment of refugees based on their country of origin. Speaking at the Paris Peace Forum, she noted the difference in reception of refugees from Ukraine to those from countries such as Syria, Myanmar, and South Sudan, who had also been driven from their homes.
“What accounts for the contrast in compassion? Does skin color make all the difference?” she asked.
In May, Queen Rania attended the coronation ceremony of the King Charles III and Queen Camilla in London alongside King Abdullah. Their Majesties also attended the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II in September.

Duke Stelmane and the Emperor
Tumblr media
"Belynne became my freedom" … and she is not the only one.
There's a lot to say about the dialogue in the scene where the Emperor is mourning, but I will focus on Belynne here. Note: I gathered everything I could find about her from the dialogues, books/notes, and external sources into a PDF, let me know if I missed or need to modify something (draft version 1): https://jumpshare.com/v/kX5oTLOV3jMHDn5RrBdC Blue: quotes Green: strong evidence Orange: my opinion
Tumblr media
Freedom… or control?
The Emperor's pursuit of freedom is deeply intertwined with control and manipulation:
My end is and has always been freedom. Belynne understood this. Belynne became my freedom.
It's tainted by irony and even hypocrisy since she was enthralled to allow him to exert influence over the city through her. The "freedom" he speaks of is actually his ability to control and manipulate her for his own ends. A cruel Tav can express a clear disinterest and shows a lack of respect for the Emperor's past relationship with Belynne: Player: I really don't care what your relationship with her was like. The Emperor: And yet you emulate it so well. It seems he's subtly drawing a parallel between the Tav's current relationship with him and his past one with Belynne, implying that Tav, unknowingly (we cannot know at this moment of the adventure that Stelmane was enthralled), is falling into a similar pattern of reliance and manipulation despite their disruptive stance (or it might even be a subtle threat).
The Descent into Avernus info about Stelmane reveals a situation where her autonomy is destroyed by the Emperor, as he maintains a manipulative grip over her. Aligning his interests with hers during their interactions temporarily restores her mental and physical faculties. _ She got a seizure (expected effect while proceeding the enthrallment) _ Since awakening, her mind has been a battleground between her own psyche and the Emperor's influence. _ She was unable to fully free herself from his control (and in a decade, he could have healed her to restore her free will!) _ During business dealings for the KotS, where their interests align, she regained most of her normal vigour. _ She was visited by the Emperor every ten days, which improved her condition temporarily. By visiting Belynne (#kot_4) and aligning their interests, the Emperor ensured she remained functional enough as a pawn to serve his purposes but reliant on him to maintain her competence. A cyclical dependence that makes it nearly impossible for her to break free… Though Stelmane shows evidence of increasing debility due to some sort of wasting disease, her influence over transfer of contraband in the Gate has only grown as her physical abilities have declined.
The Emperor: It was she who met with the merchants, politicians, patriars. It was she who negotiated deals and signed off on agreements. Wyll: Something's always gnawed at me. At the banquet, Stelmane didn't seem to look at us, but through us. But that second time, her gaze never left me. It was steel, sharp and unyielding. I guess he was able to use his own power through her, thanks to the special bond thrall-master they had.
Allies… or thralls?
Negotiations with prospective clients have proven so difficult that we now believe the Knights exert some sort of influence over their partners beyond the profit motive. The indications are that this influence is psychic rather than magical, but further investigation is required. […] a suspected [REDACTED], has been exerting an undue amount of power over influential actors within the city, including members of the ducal council. This is the proof that there are other 'Stelmane', it's not because we don't cross them during the adventure that they don't exist.
The Emperor: You thought you were my first ally? Far from it. I have long sought the allyship of others - it is the only way to succeed.
Tumblr media
Journal of Stelmane Location: hidden room of Hhune Mausoleum. It seems she knew pretty soon that the Emperor were a mind flayer and that she wrote this entry before the downgrade of their relationship.

Detroit City Council on Tuesday approved a $5 million expansion of the use of license plate readers across the city, using federal pandemic relief funds.
It's the latest City Council vote on surveillance technology that has ignited debate in the community. Other surveillance tools Detroit police utilize include ShotSpotter — City Council last year OK'd spending $8.5 million on the gunshot detection technology amid fierce support and opposition — Project Green Light video surveillance and facial recognition technology
Two City Council members voted against the license plate reader spending: Gabriela Santiago-Romero and Latisha Johnson.
Detroit police have used license plate readers since 2018. But with the city's new contract with Motorola Solutions, an additional 100 cameras will be set up at 25 intersections, according to Detroit police. There are currently 83 cameras set up at intersections, in addition to over 100 mobile cameras.
The vast majority of community members who tuned in to Tuesday's council vote urged their city leaders to approve the $5 million dollar contract in hopes that it could address speeding on Detroit's roads — but using license plate readers for traffic and civil infractions goes against Detroit police policy.
According to Detroit Police Department policy, license plate readers are used in investigations involving auto theft — which Detroit has seen more of in the past year — and violent crimes such as homicides and sexual assaults.
The cameras are focused on the rear of vehicles and photos are taken of license plates, Deputy Chief Franklin Hayes said during an hourlong debate prior to Tuesday's vote. The cameras do not capture the faces of drivers and are not used to identify them, he said. Officials in other cities, like Louisville, Kentucky, have reported otherwise, stating license plate readers can be used to capture faces.
Data retrieved from Detroit's license plate readers is saved for 90 days, Hayes said.
Police Chief James White described license plate readers as "one of the most useful and powerful tools that we have" during Tuesday's debate.
He noted the technology was used to locate Rashad Trice, the man charged in the killing of 2-year-old Wynter Cole-Smith — the child was kidnapped in Lansing and later found dead in Detroit, and Trice, the prime suspect, was located in St. Clair Shores.
"Certainly we don't want anyone to abuse this tool," White added.
Many community members have opposed using more license plate readers. They spoke of civil liberty and privacy concerns amid growing reliance on surveillance technology, questioned the technology's effectiveness and questioned who owns the data, and how it's protected.
One major concern involves potential harm the technology could cause in Detroit's immigrant communities. White said it's against department policy to share data with government agencies such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S Customs and Border Protection.
Sean Rositano, who works with the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center and is a member of the Detroit Immigration Task Force, said representatives of the task force met with Detroit police and aren't convinced the department's policies provide enough protection for immigrant communities.
"Cities nationwide have fought to limit license plate readers because researchers have shown ICE and Custom and Border Protection regularly purchase access to Motorola’s license plate databases," Rositano said on Monday during the City Council's public health and safety committee meeting.
"We do not want Detroit immigrant families separated, detained or deported because their license plate was stored in a database that immigration enforcement agencies can access. (Detroit police) would need to make amendments to its policies and contract with Motorola to ensure that safety of immigrants comes first."
Rositano suggested Detroit police limit agencies it shares data with, strengthen its oversight and provide transparent reporting to ensure ICE and CBP do not have access to Detroit’s data.
A spokesperson for the Detroit Police Department said the department owns the data collected by its license plate readers.
Santiago-Romero shared Rositano's concern over potential harm against immigrants in Detroit.
And she, among others, also questioned the technology's effectiveness compared with its cost.
Santiago-Romero noted that, according to Detroit police data, the technology conducted nearly 25 million license plate readings in the last 90 days, leading to only 64 arrests.
But White pushed back: Among the 64 people arrested, 16 are suspected of murder, he said.
"Sixteen murderers. That's the cost," White said.
