Interrupting the current combo for a single loose track. Y’know I’ve said some stuff about this album in the past but this song, oh this song, it just has the perfect apocalyptic vibe. Rapture, demons, goddesses, the transmigration of souls, all sorts of shit going on. And Luna’s singing, god, this woman could sing about people slipping on banana peels and it’d still feel powerful, she’s the perfect fit for this song. Also the cover art for the album is hilarious, like the taller girl just went “whatever just take the picture 🤷‍♂️” lol. Really cool track, lyrics down below and later on I’ll be back to continue with Rozen Reinette.

Another song that is trapped in the realm of just being decent, though it is a fair bit more intense than the previous one. Around the two minute mark things really turn it up a notch when Luna just does her thing. However the music is just overall kind of repetitive and neither Rill nor Luna can fully save it. Still, anything with Luna in it has at least that value for me, so I’ll still listen to it once in a while, who am I kidding. [Translation and Lyrics] 月夜の仮面舞踏会 by Ariabl’eyeS

This time we’ll go over their second single, Aizou Hiai Catharsis, which would later be absorbed into the album Reimei Sinfonia. What’s interesting about the versions in the single is that the vocals are by neither Rena nor Luna(as they are in the album), and like I’ve said several times in the past their vocal delivery is what really gets me in most of their albums, so I was interested in finding out how the music fares without them. The vocals on the single were provided by Rill, who still seems to be on very good terms with the band, and well, it’s kind of ok. It’s just an ok song, Luna’s version (above) is a bit better, but still just ok. Lyrics down below and see you all soon.

So yeah, the booklet shows a bit of wrongreading going on, mainly “gensou” (fantasy) is written as 蒼 (blue) in the booklet, and in the title 仮面舞踏会 (kamen butoukai) it shows the furigana マスカレード (masquerade) which, yeah, same thing but it sounds much cooler this way. I’m completely stumped on the blue though. Feel free to drop in my ask and correct my stuff for being grossly inaccurate, I would highly appreciate that.

[Translation and Lyrics] Asphodelos by Ariabl’eyeS

After that brief intermission, here’s the last song in the single. This is also one of their most popular tracks and it managed to get featured in their latest album where they did some ballad arrangements for their older stuff. Asphodelos are a flower often linked with death and the underworld in greek mythology in case you were wondering. Of all their most popular stuff this is probably the most subdued and calm showing that those passionate vocals aren’t their only forte but that people also want something more cozy to warm up to.

But again I have to complain about the album because christ... Prior to this song we get 3 tracks that are just so... not great. Crescent Eve, Miserable and Reflect are not only subpar tracks to my taste but it doesn’t help that they don’t really convey much or nothing much happens in them. I don’t hate them but they feel like fodder, and in fact when I dislike them the most is whenever they manage to sound good because they’re kind of wasting a sound that could’ve been used in better songs. However, I will admit the album fully redeems itself with sou oka no rasen which is a pretty darn fantastic track and has the best vocal delivery on the album, also features both Luna and Rena.

As you may know I’m much more a fan of having 2 voices in a song rather than just one so this might just be my bias, I certainly was disappointed when I saw the booklet of the single and saw that not only were there no songs with the both of them, but also no songs with Luna at all. For the final scores I’ll go ahead and give the album a 5/10 with sou oka no rasen being my favorite among the new tracks, while the single, I’d say it’s more of a 7/10 with tsumibukaki being the track that stuck with me the most, closely followed by EDEN. These releases didn’t hit me quite as hard as other albums by the band but to be fair they’re also some of their earlier work and I had a much easier time understanding the others which probably contributes to my getting cozy with them much faster. Hey everyone, back at it again this time it’s their 2012 single katayoku no romancia, or as the cover says, one-winged romancia. This single would go on to be expanded into a full album titled reimei sinfonia (symphony of dawn) with a whooping 10 tracks. While I feel that the single is pretty solid, I have my misgivings on the full album, I feel it really overstays its welcoming, a couple of beats feel uninspired, etc, so I’ll just stick to the single for now. This song is pretty standard as far as their lineup goes, I feel like I would be repeating myself if I talked about Rena’s performance, however it’s pretty telling that a 2012 performance is nearly indistinguishable from a 2019 one. It’s fair to say that rather than finding new sounds the band has been focused on sharpening the same performance for many years. [Translation and lyrics] 罪深き冒涜の饗宴 by Ariabl’eyeS

This is the faster track in the single, very apocalyptic feel to it and such however, once again I have to complain about the album. The previous song in the album (Umbral Era) makes this one kind of a repeat. That song does a better job of conveying the situation, has vocals and lyrics that sting harder, but the beat isn’t quite as good, and it runs on for too long making it feel like they were really padding the album to make sure it would count as markedly longer and different from the single and thus worth the purchase. Doesn’t help the case that right before that we get a song about an abandoned cat, of all things, and just... what. In the coffin of the end duology each song feels like it contributes progress in some way (except for tsuioku no bara, but that one kicks so much ass it doesn’t even matter) but through the 10 songs in this album progress often feels stagnant (specially for the next 4 tracks after this one) which wouldn’t be bad if the beats didn’t also stagnate along with that. Anyway, this is a perfectly fine song in the single so here it is for you, see you all soon.

This is it, a legitimate 10/10 song. My theory is that this single is a full on immersive experience, making me go through a catharsis from love and hate as I react so negatively to the first two tracks but then it lets go of me with something completely amazing that properly gives me The Feels ™ , freeing my mind from any sort of ambivalence as I’m left there with nothing but a blue spiral whirling in my mind. Wow, that was gay as shit, that’s how great this song is. So yeah, “双丘の螺旋“. Taken as it is written it would mean something like the spiral of the two hills, sounds alright, right? except they pronounced it soukyuu, as in 蒼穹, blue sky. Whenever Lyse is involved, always assume they’re gonna use 蒼 (ao/sou, blue). What is it with this person and blue? Why not just write it down normally? Anyway, please go on my askbox if you want to correct my interpretations, I would love that.

The last song in the album and damn dude, what the fuck, how is it not on youtube? This vid is the more recent ballad version which is still cool but what the hell, this song’s a classic, what a travesty. Usually when it comes up in my car I’m flabbergasted at the sheer longitude of the intro, which is actually only about 50 seconds but while driving that’s like, a whole year or so. TURNS OUT it’s so long because the beta/original version of the song there’s a poem in that part and just, what the hell, why remove it, it’s not a bad instrumental intro or anything but are you hearing this stuff? Why leave it out. As for my comments on that version, it’s pretty damn cool. Even though it’s only Luna she pulls her weight entirely and having two versions for stuff you like is always cool, unless the only difference is whether you can get Arcanine or Ninetails, fuck you game freak, what the hell.

Almost forgot to rate the album. Unironically a strong 9, maybe 10 if calendula grows on me a bit more, it’ just really damn solid all around. After reimei sinfonia I thought my addiction was getting better but it was just going through a hiccup. By the time this post goes up they should’ve also released a whole new album, and get this: this time they have a male singer joining them for the first time, now that’s hype. Ok so what went on this album? Pal I’ve no clue. From what I got we can extrapolate that some sort of moon guardian is faced with the decision between his duty and his love, and is pretty thorn up about it. They chose duty for those that have to be protected, but in the song Calendula they just go on about how that decision has devastated them and how they just wish they could meet again in different circumstances, or something like that. I’m assuming it’s a male because the booklet shows the shadow of a guy. Anyway, as usual, feel free to go in my askbox and complain or explain. I’m only doing these because no one else is doing it and I think they’re really great and deserving of more people liking them, so I’d certainly like to represent them as accurately as possible.
