It’s wayyyyy to early in the morning to be writing this but I must!! I just had a dream about V from V for Vendetta and I CAN’T STOP THINKING ABOUT IT.
If you haven’t seen the movie I highly recommend it! As a marvel and dc comics fan, this movie blew my expectations when it comes to a comic book adaptation.
I remember watching the film years ago and being like “Wow, V gives me Caregiver vibes” despite being new to regression at the time. Now for those of you who’ve seen the film I’m sure you’re like “Clara you can’t be serious” but hear me out!
In the film he has this gentle way about him when he first meets Evey. Like he cooks for her and he wears a cute little apron! Plus on top of this he dances with her and save her when she’s in trouble. I really feel like he would just be so gentle and kind to a Little! Plus I feel like a Little would be just what he needs to heal himself.
I know the whole prison scene isn’t a good look for him but for the sake of this Headcannon we’re gonna choose to ignore it and pretend it didn’t happen.
With that rant session out of the way I present to you:
V Caregiver Headcannons🌹
Tw- past trauma (all from V’s past)
This version of London is aware of regression and regressors but it is strictly not allowed. Anyone buying supplies, toys for themselves or anything that could even remotely hint to them being a Regressor are arrested right away.
V saved you from being arrest while you were out trying to buy supplies for yourself. (maybe a sippy up, or a pacifier, or maybe diapers or pull-ups)
He immediately knows you’re a Regressor and offers to protect and take care of you at his home. This world wasn’t accepting of regression and Regressor as a whole and this man saved your life and wanted to be your caregiver so you said yes and accepted his invitation.
Once you get to start to know V you realize he’s been alone for a long time. He’s never trusted anyone enough to bring them back to his safe house. So you feel honored to be the first. He happily shows you around, pointing out all the stolen artifacts he’s collected over the years.
When it comes to your regression, he is all for whatever your needs are. Doesn’t matter to him if you like/need diapers or pull-ups, or sippy cups or bottles. Whatever is a part of your regression is a part of your regression and he is more than happy to accommodate.
He loves to dance. Whether it’s slow dancing or fast. His particular favorite is slow dancing because he loves to hold his little one close and sway with them in his arms. It’s his fool proof way of getting them sleepy for bedtime or nap time.
If he want to get them sleepy, he’ll put on some slow music and pick them up, swaying back and forth while humming the song. Works every time!
Sometimes he just wants to dance with them. He’s been teaching them different styles of dance moves he’s learned over the years, though his little ones favorite is to just stand on his feet as he holds their hands and sways back and forth.
The two of you have movie marathons together. You alternate every other night watching one of his favs then your favs. He’s a big movie person so he’s always interesting in watching anything. But usually his little one doesn’t make it through the whole film without falling asleep. But he doesn’t mind at all, and honestly he finds it adorable watching them nod off and eventually fall asleep watching the movie.
He’s a big cuddle bug but you would have never known if you didn’t cuddle with him first. The thing about V is he’s very insecure about himself. He’s afraid you’ll be disgusted by him because of his injuries and burns. But it couldn’t be farther from the truth. While watching a movie together, you cuddle up to him, stretching your legs across his lap and resting your head on his shoulder. He freezes at first but then cautiously wraps his arms around you only for you to cuddle closer. The whole thing makes him feel so loved and accepted, something he’s never felt before Y/N.
One thing V is very solid about is his mask. He wears it at all times. While you asked him to see him without the mask he has always refuses. It’s a hard boundary for him, one you respect when you learn about his past.
Because of this he greatly respects your boundaries when it comes to anything and everything. He never wants to make you feel uncomfortable.
V loves to cook! He may not be a Gordon Ramsey type cook, he is very good at cooking. He loves when his little one helps him prepare meals and always prefers the two of them to sit at the table every night and enjoy their dinner together.
The only time you’ve ever seen his burns is when you’re cooking together. He takes his gloves off and begins to cook. But he eventually notices you staring at his hands. He goes to cover them once more but you stop him and instead hold his hand in yours to show it doesn’t bother you. This small gesture means everything to him. There may have been a tear or two under that mask.
He always wears this pink ruffled dress apron which looks so funny on someone as sharply dressed as him. It always make you giggle and he always jokes about it. “You don’t like Papa’s apron? I thought I looked lovely in it?” *poses* This is followed by Y/N almost falling out of their chair with laughter.
He loves to play pretend. Doesn’t matter what it is, he just loves to chase or get chased around the house with his little one running away or after him. They usually play knights in shinning armor together after V teaches them how to fence.
He’s definitely a Caregiver that would talk to your stuffies. “Does Fluffy want anything to eat? No? Alright then. I don’t want Fluffy to feel left out of breakfast. We mustn’t forget Fluffy after all.”

COMPLEX CHARACTERS
Opening today:
Freud's Last Session--The "session" in question is fictional, or at best nervily speculative--a meeting of the titular psychoanalytic pioneer with the Christian apologist C. S. Lewis. It's September of 1939; England has just declared war on Hitler's Germany, and Freud, who has fled Austria for England with his obsessively devoted daughter Anna, is in the agonizing homestretch of terminal mouth cancer. Irked by Lewis' parody of him in The Pilgrim's Regress (1933), Freud has invited the young Oxford don to his house in London for a civil but contentious chat.
Freud is played by Anthony Hopkins; Lewis is played by Matthew Goode. The direction is by Matthew Brown from a script he co-wrote with the American playwright Mark St. Germain, based on St. Germain's play (which I saw well-produced by Arizona Theatre Company in 2013). The play is a two-hander, but this handsomely-produced movie expands on it with scenes involving Anna (Liv Lisa Fries) and her partner Dorothy Burlingham (Jodi Balfour), flashbacks to Freud's childhood traumas and to Lewis' PTSD from the trenches in the earlier war, his eyebrow-raising cohabitation with Janie Moore (Orla Brady), etc.
But the juice in the film is still in the theatrical sparring between the two leads, especially Hopkins as the chuckling, cheerfully furious Freud. He's as lovably cantankerous here as he was as Pope Benedict in 2019's The Two Popes. For his part, Goode is smart enough not to make Lewis saintly or jolly; he gives him an edge of defensive aloofness alongside a deep decency.
It's hard to say which, if either, of the two men's viewpoints St. Germain and Brown are most in symapthy with. Many of us are likely to feel ourselves somewhere between Freud's staunch and bitter rationalism and Lewis' somehow rather half-hearted pose of orthodoxy. But the point of the film seems to be that what underlies both is, at least partly, existential terror, of a sort to which intelligent, intensely imaginative people like these two are particularly subject. Neither strict nonbelief nor strict belief seems to offer much deliverance.
Mean Girls--"It's a cautionary tale..." So the Greek chorus characters Janis and Damian sing to us at the beginning of this musical remake of the well-loved 2004 teen comedy, pared down from the 2018 Broadway version. This may be the secret of Mean Girls, in each iteration: it really is a moral tale with a cautionary point, and the heroine really does go to the dark side.
As you'll recall, Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) is a smart kid who grew up in campsites in Africa; her mother (Jenna Fischer) is a researcher. When she lands at a suburban American high school for junior year, the divisions in cafeteria clique and caste strike her as similar to those in the animal kingdom. She gets sucked into spending lunches with "The Plastics," a circle of glamorous sycophants led by uber-mean girl Regina George (Renée Rapp). Cady agrees, initially, at the urging of artsy girl Janis (Auli'i Cravalho) and big gay Damian (Jaquel Spivey) to serve as a double agent in a revenge plot against Regina. But gradually, of course, the plastic begins to take over for real.
Or maybe the secret is just that the film, scripted, like the original, by Tina Fey (freely adapting a book by Rosalind Wiseman), is funny and sweet, but not so sweet that it forgets to be, you know, mean. Or maybe it's that most of the songs, by Nell Benjamin and Jeff Richmond, are delightful, and buoyantly staged by directors Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez, Jr.
Overall, these actors don't have the vibrancy or distinctive personalities of the original film's cast, but they make up for this with terrific musical performing. Rapp brings such a baleful moan to "Meet the Plastics" that she really is a little scary, and Rice shades herself from guileless to conniving very believably. A few vets are around; Fey and Tim Meadows reprise their roles from the first film, and Busy Phillips and Jon Hamm contribute funny bits. The standouts, however, are Cravalho as Janis and Spivey as Damian, both equipped with gorgeous voices and the ability to act while they're belting.
Fey's generous-hearted--and sensible--take on popularity and self-esteem has provided a solid and unsentimental piece of role modeling for teens (and the teens that endure within most adults) for twenty years now. Maybe this movie will extend it for another twenty.

Dear little me,
we changed a-lot. I am no longer the same excited yet depressed girl with cool inner world.
I am a regular human. I really believed I was something special. But life just dull you out and ground you to earth.
maybe it was my choices, the people, the destruction and sabotaging I aimed at when I was a teenager, it all accumulated to this.
I miss my childhood and the puberty phase deeply. Nothing is adding up to be labeled as worth remembering memories.
I am engaged now. After a five years old of toxic relationship that I described as perfect in my last posts - ha, the naivety - We broke up finally. He let me go, O. And after that, I jumped into another loop hole with all kind of shitty, betrayal and drama. I didn’t know what was waiting me at the end, I just went with the flow of it all. So I ended up getting engaged to Mj, the guy who got me into the loop hole. He is my fiancé, I do adore him. Even though our engagement was all brief rush to sort things before him and I head to the city I fucking hate.
I am now back at my mother’s house. I didn't think I will go back, but thats what I get from quitting my first official job back in 2021 and going back to my home country doing nothing. Absolutely nothing. Maybe just committing to gymming, getting fit, partially getting rid of my eating disorder. I did my Ielts exam though, didn’t study and got 4 lessons as an aid, got 7 for a final score. So I got rid of my exam fright that made me give up all these years. Turned out to be easier than I thought.
I am now studying masters because my BA turned out to worth almost equal to shit if you don’t have the passion and motivation to write a script for a film.
So engaged, MA applied psychology and on the 26th of January 2023, my first book “contradictions of a chain smoker” got published worldwide.
so maybe some areas you are proud of me and some you are not, little Lya. I know you wanted us to become famous writers in London. Maybe more independent. But I feel like nothing can define me anymore. I am having hard time finishing books in contrast when I was on prozac, fucking sexy skinny 49KG and reading even while going down on the electric escalator.
However, last year, with my steam account, I did feel the rush of playing games. I was young again, no responsibilities. I am also going into Counselling sessions at the university. I am regressing a lot too. like youtube videos of gameplays of everything you could think of us from our childhood, in addition to horror games.
please please please, future me, whatever your name is, when i come back and read this all over again in couple of upcoming years, please find your nostalgic self. Please fall in love with what got us occupied and creative.
Do something….

Let me know if you wish to be added to the list! I’m happy to do it!
Shane woke up that morning with knots in her stomach. She dropped every product she picked up in the shower, she was shaking so much. She accidentally ordered the wrong coffee on her way to work and was now drinking something much less caffeinated and far too sweet for her taste. The barista had informed her it was a grande caramel macchiato with an extra pump of vanilla and extra caramel drizzle…with only two shots of espresso…she couldn't begin to describe how wrong that drink was for her. But it was better than nothing, she told herself, not fully convincingly.
She had chosen her clothes with extra care, even though, with the dress code, her options were limited. And she had made sure to put on a bit of mascara and just a touch of perfume, even though they weren't strictly supposed to wear it…she didn't know why she was bothering.
Well, actually, she did know why. She had been checking her schedule extra diligently lately to make sure she didn't look like a hobo when Sy was coming in. He'd been coming for three weeks now, and after the initial bellyaching about Jordan not being as pretty as her…her heart!...and his feeling extra sore after his visits with him, they were on a roll and had a great chemistry together as far as their treatments went…she tried not to think about…beyond the world of therapy.
She thought back to their first session after she got back from her trip. And the conversation they had.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I think the next time you can't see me, I'm just going to cancel." he had sulked as he wiggled his mass of muscle onto the mat.
"Sy, no. you need therapy. Don't be like that to Jordan. He's an excellent therapist."
"He ain't you though." he smirked, sending her heart racing with that smile that somehow managed to look both boyish and rakish under his full, dark beard. Fucking hell. He needed to stop.
"Well, we can't fault him for that, can we? Lay back, Mister." She demanded. Done with the niceties of the evaluation and onto the treatments where she was in charge. The boss.
"Yes, sir!" she laughed at his clear avoidance of calling her ma'am.
"So where'd you go last week? Vacation or stay-cation?" he asked, the term "stay-cation" sounding downright comical coming out of his country-boy mouth.
"I went to the beach. Gulf Shores."
"I thought you looked like you got some sun."
"Yeah," she pretended his noticing the detail of her awesome tan did not send her reeling. "My folks rented a condo right on the water for my siblings and I to come and stay with them. They're still there. It was tough to leave all that beauty." the beach, pretty much any beach, was her favorite place to be.
"I bet…" he looked at her, something dreamy in his eyes, but he looked away before she could process it. "I thought I had my fill of sand and sun when I was over in Iraq. But you make it sound…like paradise." he smiled softly up at her as she worked on his knee, trying to break apart some of the scar tissue from the injuries and surgeries he'd had…and focus on that, and not the warmth rising in her.
"That's the perfect way to describe any place on the Gulf of Mexico. I doubt it's anything like Iraq, since there's so much water around. It's my favorite vacation destination. Well, apart from London."
"Them British folks always seem so stuck up. Don't know if I'd get along with any of 'em."
"It felt like a second home for me. Everyone was very kind and polite, for the most part. At least it was no worse than it is here."
"Maybe it's just because you're so nice."
"Wait 'til about week eight or ten of your protocol. You won't think I'm nice then. You'll be cussing me out and ready to ring my neck."
"Promise?" he asked, a dark grin on his lips and in his eyes…she faltered for a moment, gulping.
"Cut it out, Syverson." she rolled her eyes, covering…without great effect the way he made her feel.
"Yes...ma'am." he smirked with satisfaction.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And now, today, she'd be treating him again, fairly early in the day, and she had to prepare herself. She'd checked the policy, and although there wasn't anything strictly against dating a patient, it was clearly a conflict of interest, and would be frowned upon by her frigid tyrant of a boss. Best to let things remain platonic for now.
Her 9:30 was a no show, so she finished up some notes and was working on some continuing education credits when messenger popped up around 10:00.
Sergeant Sexypants is here. He's quite early and he knows it…*smirk emoji* he must like you, Shane!
Heather, come on, be respectful…he was discharged at the rank of Captain! *rofl emoji* and I think you might be right about him liking me…*nervous emoji*
Oooooooooh!!! You guys are gonna *couple kissing emoji* *eggplant emoji* *okay emoji* *explosion emoji* *baby emoji*
Omg…*three facepalm emojis* I am going to go ahead and start him early since my 9:30 was a NCNS.
Don't finish him too early. Make it last. *smirk emoji*
Jeez. She closed the chat and went to grab him from the waiting area.
"Hey Sy, you ready?"
"You bet, sunshine!" he flashed her a crooked smile. He was calling her sunshine now…ad that to the list of things she'd have to pretend didn't make her swoon.
"Great. Let's start on the bike. How's the knee feeling today?"
"Oh, it's…about the same. Stiff. Lil' sore."
"Well, it's a slow process, like I told you at your eval. You've got a lot going on in there."
"I know…just…it hasn't taken me four weeks to do anything in my life." he sulked. "So…thinking about this taking…twelve or more…" he grimaced as he sat down on the bike, and adjusted it for his longer than average legs, putting his feet in the pedal stirrups.
"You may not see it, Sy, because you're so close to it, but trust me, you're making progress. I can tell you're doing your exercises at home, and you're always willing to put in the work here. You have no idea how much that sets you apart from…some of these other people." she leaned in closer and spoke the last part more quietly to him. It was true. So many of her patients were either lazy or just in it to appease their MDs into writing them scripts for pain meds. That wasn't Sy.
"You really think so?" he gave her the side eye with his baby blues, crushing her with the color like the waves of the ocean she'd just returned from.
"In fact, I know so." she placed a reassuring hand on his broad and thick shoulder. She felt the tension between them hum, like electric current.
"Now, level one, and a steady pace. You're not trying to win any medals here. I'll take those crutches."
"When ya think I can 86 'em damn things?" he griped as he handed over the assistive devices.
"Well, you see Potter again tomorrow? I'll write an update today and send it to him. If he likes what he reads, or more likely pretends to read, regarding your progress, he may discharge them. Do you feel like you can be good to the knee and treat it nice without using crutches? I don't want you to regress and re-injure yourself. That's not gonna get you into your running shoes any sooner."
"I'll be nice. Real gentle." he winked at her…he wasn't just talking about the knee. And she knew it. But again, she pretended she didn't, ignoring once more those butterflies threatening to choke her they were multiplying so fast in her belly.
"Okay, I'll put that in my note. Patient compliant with instructions to be nice." she laughed.
They talked as they biked, Shane sat on the one next to him and pedaled along with him for something to do other than be idle. She thought it made him feel better as well. Like he wasn't doing it alone. They covered the subject of her siblings, an older brother in IT and a younger sister who was an MA, and his German Shepherd, Aika, which he was allowed to bring home from Iraq after they were both honorably discharged. Music, both of them completely in agreeance about the superiority of classic rock.
"I noticed you've worn a Lynyrd Skynyrd shirt a few times and meant to say something before now."
"Yeah, they're one of my favorites. But there are a few newer groups that I like a lot, too. Kings of Leon got me through some tough times, honestly."
"Oh, they're great! I love their sound. And their lyrics…poetry."
"No shit. Sorry." she shook her head and raised up her hands to indicate that he didn't need to apologize to her for swearing. She'd been known to make sailors blush when she was off the clock. "Only by the Night…that whole album is…it's just in my blood, ya know? Ya ever have an album do that?"
"I have. Whole artists catalogs, actually."
"Which artist?" he prodded.
"The Beatles. Pretty much every song. Like you said, it just, like, I dunno, it's almost deeper than the veins. It's in the marrow. My soul." she stared off out the windows ahead of them, thinking about her favorite band in the world and how magical it was to experience Sir Paul McCartney playing some of her favorites live…twice…and the timer on the bike went off, pulling her from her daydream.
She looked over at him, startled by both the noise, and the dreamy look in his eyes that was becoming all too familiar.
"Sorry." she stood, grabbing his crutches for him and handing them back to him from where she had leaned them as they rode.
"Hey, don't be sorry for…ahem…for loving what you love. We should all…hold on to the things that make us feel like that." she nodded.
"Thanks…I don't think a lot of people…understand the way I…my tendency to take things like music, movies, and shows…books…so deeply to my heart." they walked to the treatment room from the gym, taking their time, since they had it. A rare occurrence for Shane, always needing to capitalize on every spare minute. To make productivity a priority.
"I think…that…well, seeing a pretty grim side of the world like I have…seems like there's enough darkness and bullshit making everyone miserable. If we find something…or…someone…that brings us some happiness or even just makes that misery bearable…we oughta hang onto 'em real tight. Cherish it like gold." the silence in the small room was loud with that electrical hum of their tension again. He'd said all the right things, as he always seemed to, but under the absolute wrong circumstances. She just nodded.
"They teach you philosophy in Basic?" she giggled. He laughed back in response.
"Oh, no, Basic was way easier than…whatever goes on inside of us."
"Speaking of which," she segued deftly, "lay back, and let my try to get some range out of that knee before I take new measurements for this update I'm gonna write."
"Yes, ma'am!" he chuckled.
"You get some sick thrill out of calling me that, don't you?" she scowled playfully at him.
"Oh, you have no idea…ma'am." he winked at her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day, Shane was wondering how Sy's appointment went as she ate her soup at lunch and caught up on her morning notes. She got a ping on messenger.
You have a gentleman caller…*eggplant emoji* hehe, he's on line three.
Geez…thanks Heather.
No need to ask for a name. She knew Heather meant Sy.
She picked up the phone at her desk in the treatment room.
"Hey Sy! How'd the appointment go?"
"Hey, sunshine…eh…he said I'm doin' good, but he wants me to stay on crutches another two weeks." she could hear grave disappointment in his voice. She felt for him.
"Aww, I'm sorry Sy. I know you wanted off those. And I know they're a pain. Literally and figuratively."
"Why wouldn't he want me off 'em?" he was so frustrated. He must have just left the office.
"Did you ask him that question?"
"You know doctors, Shane. Not like I would have got an answer in plain English. Figured you'd know."
"Well, I haven't seen your post-visit report, but it's my presumption that he wants to play it safe. You know he spent most of his day in the operating room with you, right? An eight hour surgery, you had. He probably doesn't want to undo all that by d/c'ing the crutches too soon."
"I was gonna be careful though, Shane!" he was worked up properly, and she could hear it over the roar of his pickup in the background.
"I know you were, Sy. I'm sure you were going to take all kinds of precautions. But what if you're walking into your kitchen, during a storm, and there's a loud clap of thunder, and Aika gets startled and busts past you? What if you're feeling good one day, and forget about it, and jog to catch up to someone holding the door open for you and miss a stick or something under foot? You can't prepare yourself for every pebble or patch of mud in your path, Sy. Accidents will happen. Some circumstances are beyond our control…we just have to do the best we can. The crutches are going to help you until we get you stronger. That's what we'll focus on until those two weeks are up."
"Why is it you can calm me down like this?" he asked, sincere and truly calmer than he had been.
"I'm just a good therapist, is all."
"Ya don't think that's really all, do ya?" the sound of his deep drawl in her ear from the receiver made her shiver. He was implying something that she just couldn't entertain. It wasn't possible for them right now. Maybe…down the road…in a few weeks…
"I'll see ya tomorrow, Sy. Come ready to work that knee."
"You didn't say no…" he was too hopeful. Damn it, he was cute when he was hopeful. She was glad she couldn't see his face light up like she knew it was doing.
"You may have noted I didn't say yes, either."
"Yet. See ya in the mornin', sunshine."
"Bye, Sy."
She put the receiver in the cradle and her face in her hands.
"Shit."
Dominic Miller. Absinthe, 2019. ECM 2614. ( Manu Katché ) ~ [ Album Review | 1) ECM Reviews + 2) All About Jazz + 3) London Jazz News ]
1) The title of Absinthe, Dominic Miller’s follow-up to his 2017 ECM debut, Silent Light, harks to the early French Impressionists, whose all-in dedication to art is a philosophical touchpoint for the guitarist. To carry on that spirit, he could hardly have asked for a more eclectic yet integrated band. Bandoneon player Santiago Arias brings a sense of cross-continental shift that makes the world just a little smaller; keyboardist Mike Lindup adds a sometimes-surreal vibe that’s equal parts cry from the past and message from the future; bassist Nicolas Fiszman is the soil to Miller’s sunlight; and drummer Manu Katché, a remarkable impressionist in his own right, is time incarnate.
With such a massive scale to be reckoned with in theory, one might expect the results to be overpowering, when in practice the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic content is so evenly distributed between pans that by the end of each tune we’re left on an even keel from where we began. This is nowhere so true as on the opening title track, which spins a steady downtempo groove from the filaments of Miller’s solo introduction. The way his bandmates shuttle through the greater loom of the album’s concept is as intuitive as the compositions yearning for consummation. A certain feeling of inward travel continues in all that follows.
The quiet locomotion of “Mixed Blessing” and is as progressive as the tender “Christiana” is regressive, the geometrically inflected “Étude” as inviting as the open-ended charm of “Ombu,” the melancholy “Ténèbres” as dark as the transparent “Saint Vincent” is bright. The latter bears dedication to the late Cameroonian guitarist Vincent Nguini, a longtime collaborator with Paul Simon and something of a mentor for Miller. Even without such biographical details, these stories write themselves, unhidden, in real time. Binding their pages are shorter pieces, including the piano-rich “Verveine” and the haunting “La Petite Reine.” Into these we are afforded only fleeting glimpses, personal tesseracts whose potential for transfiguration can only be expressed in song.
All of which makes “Bicyle” quintessential in the present milieu. Its pedaling motion is more than a metaphor; it’s an actualization of life’s unstoppable flow. For there, woven between each spoke like a playing card, memories fade into new experiences, squinting into the glare of a setting sun as the world curls into slumber.
2) Guitarist Dominic Miller's 2017 ECM debut Silent Light was a low key affair that focused on his solo classical guitar (plus a bit of light percussion). The sequel features a full quintet with a rhythm section. A bigger sound, but with a similar impressionistic flavor. Miller's liner notes make that visual art reference explicit: as a resident of the south of France he has become fascinated with the French Impressionist painters, admiring their artistic daring.
The album opens with the title tune: Miller's acoustic guitar and drummer Manu Katche's swirling cymbals set the scene for the entry of Santiago Arias' bandoneon, the primary melodic instrument in the music. It is a significant new timbral color in the ensemble, as well as a nod to the avowed Argentinian influence in Miller's music. "Mixed Blessing" includes a synthesizer solo from keyboardist Mike Lindup, a contrasting sound that is favored throughout the set; although on "Étude" his piano playing is a foundational element.
The spare, low rumbling drums and guitar of "La Petite Reine" recall the sound of Silent Light. "Étude" and "Ombu" step up the tempo a bit, and the latter gives the drums a highlighted role as active rhythmic accompaniment for the whole band: no doubt very satisfying for Katché fans who have been waiting to hear him cut loose. Closer "Saint Vincent" is an upbeat tune that features the whole band, with solos from Miller and Lindup (on piano).
Miller has an expanded musical concept to go with the larger band. The tunes are still compact statements, but make use of the instrumental forces for greater timbral contrast. And he is a generous band leader as well: while his guitar is at the center of the arrangements, all of the players are given a chance to shine. It will be interesting to see where he goes next.
3) Absinthe is Argentinian-born guitarist Dominic Miller’s second release for ECM and his fourteenth solo album. The list of recordings with other people, however, is immense. Even if his name is unfamiliar you have probably already heard him. He has played with Sting since The Soul Cages in 1991 and masses of other musicians along the way, from The Chieftains to Youssou N’Dour, via Tina Turner, Lesley Garrett, Sarah Jane Morris and Manu Dibango. Some of the musicians with whom he has recorded make up the new quintet for this album.
Absinthe is an airy, atmospheric set of compositions inspired by Miller’s love of the works of the Impressionist artists, many of whom painted in the South of France where he now lives. The title came to him first, apparently – many of the impressionists drank absinthe, that potent anise-based spirit favoured by bohemians known as “la fée verte”. In a recent interview with German news site DW.com, Miller expands on the title:
“For me it’s about being out of it. And over the last few years I’ve really been into French paintings and thinking about this history of the early 19th century and how Lautrec and Van Gogh and a lot of these guys were tripping on absinthe but still coming up with amazing work. And because they were such highly skilled artists they could come up with these really outrageous trippy concepts with colour.”
Miller put together a quintet sympathetic to his ideas and wrote the music with the “sonic palettes” of his chosen musicians in mind. First up is young Argentinian Santiago Arias who studied under Dino Saluzzi at the Conservatoire in Buenos Aires. He plays the bandoneon, that concertina-like instrument associated with Argentinian tango. His sound is pure and extremely melodic. The combination of Miller’s lyrical guitar with Arias’ lovely lines is delightful – they are the perfect foil for each other. The other three musicians have all played with Miller for years.
On keyboards is Englishman Mike Lindup, best known for his work with Level 42, but a regular performer with Miller, who played with Level 42 himself back in the 80s. Lindup’s is a third melodic voice with the guitar and bandoneon – he also adds delicate ethereal tones, almost theremin-like in places.
On bass is Belgian Nicolas Fiszman. He studied guitar with Philip Catherine, then changed to bass. He’s played with Miller since 2005, but has accompanied Johnny Halliday, Angelique Kidjo, and Charles Aznavour in his time. Miller describes his playing and intonation as having “the nobility of a great whale”, which is a lovely description and also, I think, fair enough. His subtle and discreet bass underpins the whole endeavour.
Miller describes French percussionist Manu Katché as “an artist on the drums, especially with his cymbal work where he is like a great painter”. His presence is everywhere on this recording, and his contribution adds colour, as well as texture to the pieces. Katché is well-known as a session musician – having played with almost everybody. He’s also an ECM veteran. Miller has recorded with Katché as part of his band, and he’s another long-serving member of Sting’s band, so they know each other musically very well.
It’s an unconventional combo, but it works well – the range of timbres and harmonies is extremely agreeable. There’s an Argentinian tinge to much of the music, though think Gotan Project, rather than Astor Piazzolla, as there is a groove through many of the tunes, not just from Katché’s inventive percussion but the rhythmic qualities of the ensemble playing. On an initial hearing the CD appeared light and easy, bar some disjunct improv in the track Ombu, but this is misleading. I think that the limpid clarity of the production (by Manfred Eicher himself), the pleasant atmosphere, the sweetness of tone and the downright prettiness of the guitar and bandoneon sound just gives that impression. As is often the case with music which can be perceived as light or suave, like bossa nova, for example, on a closer listen, the complexity of the composition and the beauty of the ensemble playing comes through.
From the first track Absinthe, where the bandoneon, after a precise harmonious intro, starts sliding about into little patches of dissonance, and the spectral notes from the synthesiser twist around against a backdrop of precise strings and strangely colourful cymbal sounds, the listener is entranced. By the final track, Saint Vincent (presumably a reference to Van Gogh rather than the countless catholic saints, or indeed the American singer/songwriter of the same name) the sonic palette has been fully explored. Miller’s guitar playing is wonderful throughout, lyrical, deft and harmonious. Saint Vincent builds in layers of colour and light to a Pat Metheny-esque crescendo and then disappears as if blown away by the mistral.
This record will appeal to Miller fans, to Sting fans, to existing fans of any of the other members of the band, and to new listeners who are already aficionados of ECM’s fine output of chamber music. As usual, I now want to hear this live, and indeed a grand promotional tour for Absinthe of Central and South America, and Northern Europe was planned. Sadly it has had to be cancelled for health reasons. Wishing Dominic Miller a speedy recovery.
FOURTEEN
Week Four
It didn’t take long for Sia to discover why it was that Harry had shot Mitch that scathing look at the beach the previous weekend.
True to his word, they finished all the recording and preliminary mixing for ‘Anna’ early Tuesday, so after lunch they went into the new song that Harry and Mitch had been working on together after hours. They started off with recording that original bass beat that Mitch had come in with that first week they’d been in the studio. Sia was as in love with it as she had been the first time she’d heard it, the sultry tones and slow draw clawing at her music-loving heart. They spent the first hour laying down an unedited track, just getting it in the computer in order to lay the vocals Harry had prepared for the song on top.
Harry shot a concerned look to Mitch from opposite sides of the glass in the booth, before darting his eyes over to where Sia was sitting. Sia couldn’t help but wonder what Harry seemed to be so nervous about. She watched Mitch give Harry a reassuring nod before Harry signaled for them to start the track. Alex pressed play on the board in front of them. Harry let the beat play for a two counts before opening his mouth, eyes closed, like he either was so into it he couldn’t be bothered to look at anything else, or he didn’t want to have to look at Sia.
“I’m selfish, I know…”
Sia could do nothing but stare, gobsmacked as Harry sang the entire song through, hanging on his every word. Every song they’d recorded up to that point had been fun, upbeat, maybe a little provocative, and there’d been one that was very obviously about his mum and sister. However, this was the first one that was a bit more agonising and beseeching. It wasn’t a hard guess as to what—or whom—he was singing about through his beautiful words of imagery and metaphor.
When he’d finished the first run through the whole song, the people sitting in the room promptly erupted into a round of applause, cheering for Harry, who was bashfully smiling behind the mic still. When Jeff and Mitch flashed him a thumbs up, he chuckled and took a mocking bow
Sia stood quietly by herself. Everyone’s cheers and words of encouragement sounded hazy and muffled in her ears. All that was playing in her mind was Harry’s beautiful voice, singing those words that were obviously drawn from a place that contained her and their relationship. She obviously couldn’t fault him for writing songs about his emotions and experiences, but it was still a hard pill to swallow, hearing him sing about her so longingly and reflectively. She wasn’t sure if she was prepared for it, and it had certainly caught her off guard.
No one besides Mitch and Harry noticed when Sia quietly slipped out of the room.
~*~*~*~
Sia successfully avoided any human contact for the rest of the day. When she’d left the studio, she’d made a short detour to the kitchen to make herself a cup of tea, and then gone promptly to her room. She’d sent a quick text to Ellen to tell her about the song Harry had apparently written about her, and she hadn’t bothered to read whatever her friend had replied. El knew not to bother Sia if she didn’t answer her texts, so she turned on the telly and put on Forensic Files, happy to watch some mindless show for the rest of her day. Mitch came in to check on her around dinner time, and Sia had declined his offers to bring her something small. No one bothered her for the rest of the evening.
That night, she hadn’t been asleep for more than three hours when she was woken by a nightmare, a recurring one she’d been having since December of the previous year. She sat straight up in bed, heart racing, chest heaving, and tears streaming down her face. She stumbled her way to the bathroom, lights still off, and ran cold water over her face to calm her down and hopefully mitigate some of the swelling.
The nightmare occurred every night for the rest of the week. Coincidentally, that was the same span of time they were working on this song that was hitting a little too close to home for Sia. She effectively avoided Harry and Mitch for the rest of the work week, and she was relieved when they went out with the rest of the crew on Saturday. There’d been talks of a barbecue on Sunday, and Sia had promised Alex and Ben that she’d be there, but she was working herself up to that.
While everyone had broken for lunch break on Thursday, Sia decided it was an appropriate time and put in a call to her therapist back in LA.
“I thought I was doing better,” Sia admitted, picking at the little fringed bits that hung off the decorative pillows on her bed. “But evidently, I’ve regressed.”
“Having your nightmares come back isn’t a regression, Sia,” Dr. Lind soothed, her voice taking on that motherly quality that Sia had become used to when she was talking her off the metaphorical ledge.
“Well, considering I haven’t had them since April, it sure feels like it,” Sia huffed.
“I’m honestly surprised it took you four weeks of being in that environment for them to come back.”
“That’s why I thought I was actually healing.” Sia swiped at the tears that threatened to fall.
“I’ve told you before, and I will continue to reiterate this: healing is not a straight line. Sometimes you’ll kick a habit or symptom only for it to return months later, and that’s okay. It doesn’t mean all your work has been for nothing. It just means there’s been a bump in the road that you will overcome, because you have the tools to jump that hurdle. Sia, compared to the mental and physical state you were in when I first met you in March, you’re doing worlds better. And from what Dr. Grant sent me from when you were seeing him in London, you’re not even the same young woman he first met back in January. You need to be proud of the progress you’ve made and all your accomplishments, because they are celebration-worthy. But you also need to accept that this isn’t a straight path, and that’s perfectly okay.”
“I just want to be me again.” Sia’s vice sounded strained even to her own ears. The lump in her throat made it harder to talk over, and she knew she was only a few minutes away from completely breaking down. Today was the perfect time for a cry session in the shower, she reckoned.
“You’re still you, Sia,” Dr. Lind hushed. “You’ve just experienced a trauma that no one expects you to just get over. And the sooner you tell Harry and let him shoulder this burden with you, the sooner I think you’ll really begin to feel better. While I see all this progress in you, I know that is something that you will see as a marker for your journey. Let yourself have that, even if that means pushing yourself. You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for. And I think Harry will be more willing to share that heartache than you believe.”
Dr. Lind let Sia quietly cry on the other end of the phone for a few minutes before she sniffled out an affirmative, promising to herself in that moment that she would tell Harry about her demons before their time in Jamaica was over. While she hadn’t really wanted to tell him, first because of her own emotional state, and then for fear of derailing the recording process, she knew it needed to be done. She needed to be selfish for once in her life and let herself own this heartbreak and hurt and live in it with someone that was so closely connected with it.
Her therapist gently ended the phone call with a reminder that she had an appointment in five minutes and needed to prepare. Sia thanked her for her impromptu phone call and agreed to call back in a week with any progress or concerns. She hadn’t been great at keeping up with her doctor while she was on the island, but she knew it was something that she needed to make a weekly commitment to in order to keep her sanity and not lose the forward momentum she was experiencing.
Sia sighed and wiped her eyes one final time before heaving herself off of the bed. She checked the hallway for wandering people before darting across to the bathroom to fix her makeup and make sure her face and eyes weren’t too red from her short crying session. When she was sure that she was pretty put together, she emerged and joined the rest of her coworkers in the kitchen.
When she walked in, Mitch offered her the rest of the antipasto salad he had been eating. She took it with a smile, but she was pretty sure it didn’t pass as anything close to genuine. She was still feeling raw from her phone session with her therapist and all the thoughts swirling in her head.
“You okay?” Mitch asked her as she sat down beside him at the counter.
She flashed him another closed-mouth smile and a quick nod before looking down into the salad he’d given her.
Harry and Mitch both tried including her in the conversation everyone was having around the island, but nothing they said could pull her attention away from her intent focus on her salad. Something was on her mind, and both men were curious as to what, but neither were going to push her. Mitch had a pretty good clue as to what it was, but that was a conversation for a different time.
~*~*~*~
Sia maintained her aloof act the rest of the day and into the following day. Harry could tell she was deep in thought most of the time they were together. He was sure it wasn’t always about work, as she was mostly silent during their time in the studio, only offering feedback when it was specifically asked of her from Alex or one of the musicians. During breaks, she spent her time in her room, and when Harry walked past, he could hear that she was on the phone with somebody. She denied his requests to go on walks and have their regular yoga sessions, claiming she was tired from the recording session that day.
Harry was worried about her, but he didn’t want to push. They had just become tentative friends again. He didn’t want to risk anything.
However, on Friday night, Harry was up particularly late, unable to fall asleep. So, he left his room and ventured into the kitchen to find some sort of snack and make himself a cuppa to hopefully lull himself into comfort and then sleep. He went to go back to his room after he’d fixed himself a bowl of grapes and slices of cheese and his tea, when he heard Sia sobbing in her room. And it wasn’t even sobbing as much as it was hysteric bawling, and it sounded like she was hardly pulling in any breath between wails.
Harry quickly set his bowl and mug down on the floor beside the door and knocked softly. “Sia.”
There was no break in her crying.
“Sia, I’m comin’ in, love,” he called out, hoping she could hear him above her own noise. Harry opened the door just enough to let himself slip in, not wanting to alert the rest of the house to whatever turmoil Sia was going through. Her cries hadn’t quieted any, so Harry rushed to her side. He’d dealt with Sia after she’d had nightmares before, but they were nothing like this. She would typically wake with a gasp and take a few shuddering breaths after she gained her bearings, and it was just enough to wake Harry beside her. He would usually coax her to lay back down beside him and ask her what it was that scared her. She’d more likely than not tell him about some absolutely ridiculous scenario that she would usually laugh about before settling back in enough to fall back asleep.
This was nothing like that.
She was thrashing almost violently, her face absolutely covered in tears, and she was wailing like she was in physical pain. But she was obviously still asleep. Harry wasn’t sure if it was best to wake her or try to get her to calm down while she was still unconscious, but he was running out of time to make that decision. Her wild movements were getting so out of hand that she was starting to hit him on accident, both with her hands and her legs.
At that point, he figured waking her up was his best option.
“Sia,” Harry called, gripping her wrists in order to keep her from further lashing out. “Sia, you need to wake up, darling.”
It was clear she wasn’t hearing him over her continued wails, so he gathered both her wrists in one hand and used the other to stroke her tangled hair back from her face. Back when they lived together and she was being particularly stubborn about waking up in the morning, running his hands over her face and hair was a sure fire way to get her up. So he took his shot at it again, and combined it with a low shushing sound to try to soothe her out of whatever terror she was experiencing.
It took nearly five full minutes before Sia seemed to finally come out of her nightmare. She blinked owlishly into the dimness of her room, a little startled at first by the person that was obviously in the room with her. She thought at first that it might have been Mitch, but she realised he most likely wouldn’t have heard her from his room all the way across the house. So, the only real logical conclusion was that it was Harry. And from the warm grip on her wrists and the light, tender strokes to her hair and face, she was sure it was her ex-boyfriend.
“Harry?” she asked, the hoarseness of her voice surprising her when it shouldn’t have. She knew she cried so hard in her sleep that it made her throat raw when she woke in the morning. She just wasn’t used to waking when it was still dark outside.
“There you are,” he cooed, dropping her wrists now that she was conscious and no longer struggling. He didn’t cease his stroking to her hair, though. He figured she still needed some comforting, given how upset she was in her sleep.
With her hands free, she reached up to wipe at her cheeks, trying her best to get rid of all the evidence of her emotional struggles. Harry was really the last person she wanted to get into with right then, but he was there. It was all inevitable anyway, but she’d still put it off as long as possible. Hopefully Harry would leave her be given he was pretty accepting of her need for space when she asked for it.
“Sorry I woke you,” she sniffled, using her hands to prop her up further in her bed. Harry let his hand fall from her hair to her thigh, leaving it stationary as a sign of his support.
Harry shook his head. He reached over to the bedside table and retrieved her a tissue to help pull herself together a bit more. “I was already awake. I was comin’ back with a midnight snack when I heard you in here. Just wanted to make sure that you weren't hurt or anything.”
“Well, as you can see, I’m fine, so…” she shrugged off, crumpling the tissue in her hand before she started ripping it into little bits like she usually did when she was upset. She did it a lot when she was sitting across from Dr. Lind in therapy, especially when she was speaking about something close to her heart.
“Darlin’…” Harry pled gently. “You’re not havin’ night terrors over nothing.”
Sia didn’t bug him about the term of endearment this time. Instead, she rubbed her lips together, looking back at Harry as he gazed at her, his green eyes betraying his concern. She knew she wasn’t going to get out of this by insisting that it was nothing, so she went with the route that would give her a chance to gather her bearings until he asked again. Hopefully that was a few weeks from now, if the recording schedule kept them all as busy as it had the previous weeks.
“I don’t wanna talk about it right now, Harry.”
Like she knew he would, Harry nodded sympathetically. “Okay. Do you want me to leave?”
“Actually,” she said, probably surprising both herself and him, “can you stay? At least just until I fall asleep? I could use the distraction.”
Harry sat still for a second before smiling at her. “Alright, budge over. Nearly takin’ up the whole fuckin’ bed.”
She playfully scowled at him. “I sleep alone. I’m allowed to take up the whole bed. After years of sharin’ a bed with your crazy limbs, I deserve to hog a bed.”
Harry laughed as he settled himself in beside her, rearranging the extra pillows to better support him against the headboard. “S’pose you’re right. I’d wake up some mornings to you nearly hangin’ off the edge and I’d be spread out like a toddler who’d snuck into their parent’s room in the middle of the night.”
“Exactly. You’re like a giant toddler,” Sia agreed with a grin of her own. She settled deeper into the pillows she had around herself, getting herself comfortable.
Harry shrugged. “I’ll take it.”
Blu-ray Review: The Fly Collection
David Cronenberg's The Fly is commonly cited as a remake that is superior to the original; an assertion that's difficult to argue, but both films are effective mashups of science fiction and horror for their time. In fact, the Fly franchise - the 1958 original, its two sequels, the remake, and its sequel - is quite good as a whole. Scream Factory has collected them all on Blu-ray in a box set dubbed The Fly Collection.
Each of the five films is housed in an individual Blu-ray case with original poster art, all of which are packaged inside a rigid slipcover case featuring new artwork. 20th Century Fox's existing high definition transfers have been utilized, and each presentation is crisp and clear. The movies are accompanied by a variety of newly-produced special features along with archival extras to make viewers buzz with excitement.
The Fly begins with an atypical murder-mystery, in which the mystery is not a whodunit but rather a whydunit. Helene Delambre (Patricia Owens, Sayonara) immediately confesses to killing her husband, scientist Andre Delambre (David Hedison, Live and Let Die), via hydraulic press - first to her husband's brother, Francois (Vincent Price, House on Haunted Hill), and then to the detective on the case, Inspector Charas (Herbert Marshall, Foreign Correspondent), - but she refuses to say why.
The slow build pays off with a dramatic reveal toward the end of an extended flashback sequence that makes up the film's second act. Andre invented a light-speed teleportation device, the disintegrator-integrator, that he eventually went through himself, only to have a pesky fly unknowingly join him. The result is a disquieting hybrid with a human body topped by a fly's head, revealed in an iconic shot that harkens back to the climax of The Phantom of the Opera.
The creature is ingrained in pop culture, but it's easy to imagine audiences in 1958 being shocked by the dramatic reveal. The theatrical trailer smartly features Vincent Price addressing the audience directly, teasing the "unearthly horror" without revealing anything. The special effects may be schlocky by modern standards, but the overall concept - based on the 1957 short story of the same name by George Langelaan - holds up quite well.
The Fly is directed by Kurt Neumann (Rocketship X-M) and written by James Clavell (The Great Escape), marking his only foray into genre pictures. Neumann died under mysterious circumstances shortly before the film's release, missing its commercial success as one of Fox's biggest hits of the year. Shot in CinemaScope with Color by Deluxe, the picture features cinematography by Karl Struss (The Great Dictator) that makes the laboratory's sleek production design pop.
The Fly's Blu-ray disc has two audio commentaries. The first is a new track featuring filmmakers/historians Steve Haberman (co-writer of Dracula: Dead and Loving It) and Constantine Nasr. It's educational but far more casual than the average historian commentary, and much better for it. The second is a light, cheery track with Hedison circa 2008. His memory is sharp, and he proudly discusses playing his character for the duration, including when his face is obscured by a cloth and, later, the fly mask.
Fly Trap: Catching a Classic is ported over from the 2007 DVD. The making-of featurette includes Hedison, Haberman, David Frankham, Tony Timpone, Donald F. Glut, and more, and even touches on the sequels, but at 11 minutes, it's only able to scratch the surface. A 1997 episode of Biography on Vincent Price features interviews with the likes of Roger Corman, Dennis Hopper, Roddy McDowall, Hazel Court, Norman Lloyd, and daughter Victoria Price. Extras are rounded out by a brief Fox Movietone News segment about movie monsters attending the film's premiere, along with the aforementioned trailer.
Fox was quick to capitalize on the success of The Fly with a sequel, Return of the Fly, released in 1959. This was a time when sequels were not the norm, mind you, so the budget is noticeably smaller. It was shot in a mere 10 days and recycles sets from the first film. CinemaScope was utlized agan but this time in black and white, which feels like a regression yet also lends itself to a film noir atmosphere. It greatly pales in comparison to its predecessor, naturally, but it fares rather well for a rushed, cheap followup.
Price is the only original cast member to reprise his role, although several other characters return to be played by different actors. Well on his way to genre stardom, thanks in no small part to The Fly, Price receives top billing this time around; although he's still not really the main character. That honor goes to Brett Halsey (The Devil's Honey) as Philippe Delambre, the now-adult son of Andre who wishes to continue his father's mysterious work, against Francois' wishes.
Despite Andre's attempts to destroy all traces of his research in the previous film, Philippe is able to successfully recreate the disintegrator-integrator with the assistance of his father's former associate, Alan Hinds (David Frankham, 101 Dalmatians). Hinds, however, is a dastardly double-crosser out to sabotage Philippe for his own gain. He ultimately causes Philippe to suffer the same fate as his father, turning him into a mutant fly creature.
Writer-director Edward Bernds (World Without End) rehashes a lot for the sequel, but there are some interesting twists. While the original story's creature largely garnered sympathy between shocks, the sequel's creature is a victim that's out for revenge. It's occasionally played for scares, although the mask - oversized and cheesy compared to the original - isn't nearly as effective this time around, but the viewer is rooting for, rather than sympathizing with, the monster as a hero.
Return of the Fly's Blu-ray disc boasts three audio commentaries, two of which are new. Frankham showcases a miraculously good memory for a 93-year-old, citing events from 50 years prior with ease. He's joined by friend/actor Jonathan David Dixon, who facilitates the conversation and fills in the blanks as needed. The actor's sweet demeanor and impressive recollection caused me to add his 2012 autobiography, Which One Was David?, to my to-read list.
Film historian/author Tom Weaver's new commentary is informative yet feels conversational; a welcome change of pace from the typically dry solo historian track. The third commentary is an archival session with Halsey and film historian/journalist David Del Valle. It may not be the most enlightening listen, as Halsey's memory isn't as strong as Frankham's, but it's enjoyable enough. Other special features include the theatrical trailer, a TV spot, and a still gallery.
The diminishing budget and resources between The Fly and Return of the Fly pales in comparison to the decline from Return to Curse of the Fly. Released in 1965, the third and final entry in the original series was produced in the United Kingdom. With Price unable to return, as he was under an iron-clad contract with American International Pictures, a new story was conceived. The go-for-broke sequel extends the mythology but distorts the familial lineage, and there's no fly this time around.
Taking another jump into the near future, the film opens with a woman, who we later come to know as Patricia Stanley (Carole Gray, Island of Terror), running away from a mental institution in her underwear. The slow motion sequence is more likely to be mistaken for a Roger Corman exploitation picture rather than identified as a studio sequel. Patricia runs into Andre Delambre's grandson, Martin (The Spy Who Loved Me), and the two quickly fall for one another despite their respective sordid pasts.
Beyond the opening attempt at titillation, this is a slow burner that's decidedly less familiar than its predecessor. Martin and his father, Henri (Brian Donlevy, The Quatermass Xperiment), have continued to make advancements using the technology developed by Andre. They have successfully teleported between Quebec and London with terrible consequences; deformed experiments gone wrong are kept locked away like prisoners. A grotesque effect in the last act is a fitting precursor to the remake.
Director Don Sharp (The Kiss of the Vampire) and writer Harry Spalding (The Watcher in the Woods) present an interesting moral quandary. Once again shot in CinemaScope black and white, the picture has a bit of a Gothic horror atmosphere. It's never fully harnessed, but the plot flirts with Patricia's descent into madness. An ill-advised Caucasian actress (Yvette Rees) playing an Asian role - with obvious fake eyelids to change the shape of her eyes - is a harsh reminder of racist practices in Hollywood.
Curse of the Fly's Blu-ray disc kicks off with an audio commentary with Haberman and Nasr, who once again provide a thorough, analytical look at the film, making a compelling argument for it being superior to Return. In new interviews, actress Mary Manson recalls going under complicated makeup to play the "very, very odd part" of the film's most integral creature, and continuity person Renee Glynne doesn't remember much about her work on the picture but offers a perspective from a rarely-heard crew position. The theatrical trailer, a TV spot, and a still gallery are also included.
When The Fly received the remake treatment in 1986, director David Cronenberg (Videodrome) put his patented body-horror spin on the concept. But beyond the Academy Award-winning makeup effects, which are aberrant and plentiful, lays a beautiful romance. The lean-paced film gets into it right away, opening with quirky scientist Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum, Jurassic Park) meeting journalist Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis, Beeteljuice).
Brundle courts Veronica by showing off his latest invention - teleportation devices known as telepods - and enlisting her to document his monumental findings. Brundle eventually goes through the telepod himself, unaware that a fly is in the device with him. While he's ostensibly unphased at first, he quickly discovers increased physical abilities. The benefits are short-lived, however, as he literally falls apart as the fly molecules overtake the human ones.
Unlike the original film, which hinged on a single, big reveal of a human-fly hybrid, Cronenberg and co-writer Charles Edward Pogue's (DragonHeart) script features a metamorphosis that slowly progresses - with gooey, practical effects by Chris Walas (Gremlins, Raiders of the Lost Ark) - throughout the film. Regular Cronenberg cinematographer Mark Irwin (Scream, There's Something About Mary) captures the atmosphere in an environment that begins cold and gets warmer as the film progresses.
Goldblum's awkward charms are at a peak. He and Davis were already a real-life couple, and their chemistry is palpable on screen. John Getz (Blood Simple) plays the third part of their love triangle as Stathis Borans, Veronica's boss and ex-boyfriend. But the intimacy extends beyond the relationships; the sparse film has but three essential roles, all of whom the viewer gets to know on a visceral level. The romance is supplemented by a heartstring-pulling score by Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings, The Silence of the Lambs).
The Fly's Blu-ray disc offers two audio commentaries: an archival track with Cronenberg and a new one with The Artist as Monster: The Cinema of David Cronenberg author William Beard. Cronenberg's commentary is a fascinating mix of anecdotes and insight, such as the telepod design being based on a Ducati motorcycle cylinder and how he had to stop Davis from subconsciously mimicking Goldblum's distinct mannerisms. Beard's analytical track digs into the film's subtext and explores its themes, giving context to how it fits into Cronenberg's filmography. There's also a trivia track, in which bits of information pop up while the movie plays.
A new interview with comedy legend Mel Brooks (Blazing Saddles) - who produced The Fly under his Brooksfilms banner - is a highlight of the set. The 93-year-old Hollywood veteran chats about Cronenberg, Goldblum, David Lynch, and more. Other new interviews include producer Stuart Cornfeld, who reveals that Robert Bierman was going to direct until a family tragedy prevented it and that John Malkovich was originally sought for the lead role; Iriwn, who discusses the unique experience of working with Cronenberg, including their unfortunate falling out; and Shore, who explains how he implemented tragic themes for his first symphonic score of this size.
A plethora of existing special features are ported over. Fear of the Flesh: The Making of The Fly is a three-part documentary produced by Fox in 2005. The three stages of the film's production are covered by Goldblum, Davis, Getz, Walas, Pogue, Irwin, and more over the course of 135 minutes, not to mention extended/deleted interview segments. The Brundle Museum of Natural History features Walas sharing design concepts and effects materials alongside behind-the-scenes footage. Deleted and extended scenes, including the alternate ending, are also featured.
The disc contains a number of written works to peruse: Langelaan's original short story, Pogue's draft of the script, Cronenberg's rewrite of the script, and three 1986 articles about the film ("The Fly Papers" from Cinefex and "The Fly: New Buzz on an Old Theme" and "More About The Fly" from American Cinematographer). Other extras includes pre-production film tests, the original electronic press kit, a vintage profile on Cronenberg, various trailers, teasers, and TV spots, and still galleries (poster and lobby cards, publicity, behind the scenes, concept art, and four different effects galleries).
Much like the original The Fly, the remake's success led to a sequel. Released in 1989, The Fly II saw Walas assume the director's chair for the first time in his illustrious career. The script is written by Mick Garris (Hocus Pocus), Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption), and Jim and Ken Wheat (Pitch Black). The pacing languishes in comparison to its predecessor, but it's not a bad followup overall. While Irwin and Shore's contributions are missed, the film reunites the talents of Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II cinematographer Robin Vidgeon and composer Christopher Young.
The film opens with Veronica (recast with Saffron Henderson, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan) giving birth to Seth Brundle's baby - a squirming, amorphous creature - while Stathis (Getz, the only returning cast member, sporting a fake beard) looks on. The child, Martin Brundle (Eric Stoltz, Mask), suffers from a dramatically accelerated life cycle in terms of both physical growth and intelligence, so by his fifth birthday, he looks like he's in his 20s.
Martin is offered a job repairing his father's telepods in the laboratory in which he was raised. While working, he becomes romantically involved with a fellow employee, Beth Logan (Daphne Zuniga, Spaceballs). Their relationship is far less organic than the one depicted in the previous film, but it largely works. Martin eventually enters a cocoon-like state, only to emerge as a creature with virtually no humanity left for a final act that feels more like an Aliens knock-off than a Fly sequel.
Despite Walas helming several ambitious special effects - including a messy head crushing that initially earned the picture an X rating - he’s unable to outdo his landmark work on Cronenberg's film. The effects feel comparatively restrained with the exception of the the fly creature's final form, which looks a bit too cartoony. Yet, as beautifully tragic as Cronenberg's film is, The Fly II contains what is perhaps the franchise's most heart-wrenching scene: Martin watching his dog - his only friend - go through the telepod with disastrous results.
The Fly II's Blu-ray disc features new interviews with Cornfeld, who opens up about the difficulties of working with the studio on the sequel; Garris, who details his quite interesting original concept that greatly differs from the final product; Ken Wheat, who explains what he and his brother's draft introduced to the project before Darabont came on for the final rewrite; Vidgeon, who discusses working with Walas as a first-time director; Young, who talks about tapping into the emotional aspects and how his score differs from that of The Fly; and special effects artist Tom Sullivan (The Evil Dead), who talks collaborating on the creatures with other artists.
An audio commentary with Walas and film historian Bob Burns, whose extensive prop collection includes several pieces from The Fly II, is carried over. The old friends' camaraderie is apparent as Walas expounds upon the experience, including Davis' reasoning for not reprising her role. Transformations: Looking Back at The Fly II is a 48-minute retrospective from 2005 with Walas, Young, and producer Steven-Charles Jaffe (Ghost, Near Dark). Extended interviews with Walas (a sprawling 80 minutes) and Jaffe are also included.
The Fly Papers: The Buzz on Hollywood’s Scariest Insect is an hour-long TV documentary from 2000 about all five Fly films. Narrated by Star Trek's Lenoard Nimoy, it features Hugh Hefner, Ray Bradbury, Walas, Hedison, and more. Walas' crew's video production journal offers a behind-the-scenes look at the film's special effects. Young provides a master class in soundtrack composition in relation to his work in The Fly II. Other extras include storyboard-to-film comparisons with optional commentary by Walas; the original electronic press kit plus extended segments with Walas, Stoltz, and Zuniga; an alternate ending; a deleted scene; teaser and theatrical trailers; and still and storyboard galleries.
Genre fans should be afraid... be very afraid of not owning this set. Scream Factory has a reputation of going above and beyond for their collector's edition releases, but their box sets - like this and the recent The Omen Collection - are downright essential for horror completists. From presentation to special features, The Fly Collection does justice to each entry in the influential franchise.
The Fly Collection is available now on Blu-ray via Scream Factory.
It felt like I was 16 for 3 years
It's hard trying to remember if something happened to me when I was 22 or 26, especially with friends I've known through all that plus more
The things that happens in my teens, going through it it felt like time was moving so slowly until it wasn't. I remember when i was 14 and in football club with my friends and this 24yro was our mentor and she was telling us how quickly her 20s hit her and we were like huh??? And she spent the rest of that session letting us be silly because we were the only girls that came to football club so it was literally just us getting extra time to hang out with each other
But I wasn't allowed outside so I had to quit every single club I was in a stunt my already poor communication skills 🙂 no football club, no homework club, no drama club, no more ice skating just come home and sit there and definitely never trust any of your friends they all hate you but I'm extremely stubborn and abstinent for no reason as an adult and hate being told what to do out of no where
I'm glad I knew I HAD to leave for uni because the way I would of regressed had I stayed in London and not let me brain feel what it's like not to answer to my family and let them get use to that shit
That anon was probs talking about mysweetgingerbread, a rep sessioner who says that taylor brushed off therapy in her rolling stone interview & that it’s unfortunate cause she thinks taylor needs it & how Andrea being her BFF isn’t a substitute for a therapist, saying that she doesn’t know for sure but thinks it’s likely taylor now smokes weed cause everyone in London including probs joe does, & that’s why her voice sounds raspier, & her face looks different & it’s likely she got work done (1/2)
she said she’s not positive about all of that but that they’re realistic inferences & we can’t pretend taylor is a perfect angel. She still loves taylor but is annoyed with her this era & thinks she’s selling out & that she’s lying & she’s inauthentic & regressing. her blog actually a lot of times makes good points in things that may be unpopular opinions, but all of that stuff I mentioned seems to be a lot of reaching & WANTING to find stuff that’s negative. think this is who they meant 2/2
the fact that everything she’s speculating about things that are wildly out of the range of what’s even our business..... i’ll pass... taylor is the only person who’s allowed to decide if she needs therapy or not. she’s smart enough to make that call for herself. her relationship with her mother is wonderful and something a lot of people would kill to have. who literally cares if she smokes??? why would that bother anyone if she does or not? that’s also not our business either to begin with. personally i’m sick of people accusing taylor of “getting work done” like so they have anything else to talk about HDKDJDK admittedly this era hasn’t been operating the best for a few reasons, but to call her a liar and a sell out? okkkkkk!! this is all wild to me lmao
In the hands of a skilled hypnotherapist, this state of hypnosis becomes a gateway to profound personal insights, healing, and transformation. By guiding clients through therapeutic techniques such as suggestion, visualization, and regression, hypnotherapists help individuals tap into their inner resources, overcome obstacles, and achieve their goals.
OUTSKIRTS CANON
--- SONG, Oldest known time-traveler, 200+
Has been around forever, it’s no joke.
Born in Korea, travelled across the world and through time.
She grew up around time-travellers and learnt it as it was practiced by the earliest time-travellers - to never interfere, and only be a passive observer to the world around them. She didn’t actively change world history, though there might have been some minor incidents in Korea when she was first learning to get the hang of it.
She happened to be in London when the Void took place, was threatened by the government to work for them after they chained her down with ability regulation technology. It went against everything she stood for, and she lives with the consequences of how abilities were used during that period.
She detests the government so fucking much and she’ll let you know about it. She had to be pretty clever to get out - forged her ability tests to make it appear as if her ability gene had gone dormant, re-changed her classification to no-risk, and put on a show as someone who’s lost her marbles so the government let her go.
Until then she was working in the Chronokinesis Department, and she mentored Luka Marković. He is the only one who knows she’s faking her ability regression, so there’s a level of trust there.
Now resides in the Elephant Graveyard, she tells tall tales and can be found entertaining groups of people with stories, but you can never be sure what she’s being truthful about.
She’s seen some Terrible Things™, is someone who knows the true history of what happened during the Void though she tends to keep mum about it unless your interests are sincere. She might talk about it at Iqra sessions, but otherwise, no, good luck.
She adopted Nadyenka Spreranskaya when she was abandoned by her family for her ability. It is up to you if this was the only time this happened or if there are more kids.
Comes across as extremely stoic and unimpressed, is dealing with a lot of PTSD and has severe feelings of guilt related to the Void that keeps her in England.
She can time travel but chooses not to.
